Singing for Madiba The Early Childhood Development (ECD) Forum from Good News Crèche, along with the children of the crèche, visited Stadford Old Age Home in Strand to sing praise and to pray for South Africa’s former president Nelson Mandela. Nomzamo eagerly awaiting new clinic ASHRAF BOOLEY

A new two-storey community health clinic will start to take shape by October this year on the corner of Solomon, Majola and Nombula Streets in Nomzamo. The new clinic will have a treatment area for chronic and acute conditions with specialist rooms for treating acute conditions and wound care. It will also have consultation and counselling rooms, a pharmacy, an infectious disease unit with a dedicated Direct Observation Treatment (DOT) room and a women and child health unit. A secure, sheltered waiting area

for patients arriving before opening hours, with full access to toilets, as well as a large multi-purpose room for education, training and physical therapy will also be included. According to Percy Frederic of the Nomzamo Community Trust, which held a stakeholders’ meeting last week Monday to discuss the process it took to secure a new clinic, the trust identified the need for the health facility in early 2008. He says the need for a new clinic was raised as the existing Ikhwesi Health Centre was no longer able to adequately cope with the ever-growing populations of Lwandle, Nomzamo, Asanda Village and other surrounding areas.

“With the rental income of the Nomzamo business centre, we managed to buy a piece of land which we donated to the province. The land was donated on condition that they build a clinic. Our donation of the land to the province made them more receptive to agreeing to build a new clinic in the area. This shows that the community is willing to look after themselves. “The beneficiaries of the Nomzamo Community Trust is the community in general and we utilise the money of the trust to benefit the community,” says Frederic. The facility will provide approximately 1 500 m² of floor space and will include a lift, says Faiza Steyn, direc-

tor of communications for the provincial Department of Health. The need to build two floors, she says, is because of the site’s size of 2 020m². The estimated cost of construction will be between R25 and R30 million, says Steyn. The clinic is scheduled for completion early to mid 2015, and operating hours will be from Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 16:30. “It is our aim to make health services as accessible as possible to the people of the Western Cape,” says Western Cape health minister Theuns Botha. He says the provincial authority is currently constructing the largest number of health facilities ever in the history of this province.

Many residents feel the need for an additional and larger clinic than the existing Ikhwezi Health Centre in Nomzamo. Some residents told the Gazette that waiting times could stretch from 05:00 to 16:00 for some patients. Nomzamo resident Nomalizo Pikashe, who was involved in establishing Ikhwezi Health Centre, says she is very excited about the new clinic. “It will have a positive impact on the community because at present they panic when they get turned away from the clinic. “The staff will also be thankful for this because the long queues put a lot of stress and pressure on them as well.”
