Somerset West girl tells of her life in Egypt TAMSYN JANTJIES

Almaas Bagus is a lively, animated young lady from Somerset Park in Somerset West, who recently returned from a year-long stay in Egypt. She says the Egypt she experienced is not the same as the Egypt we see on television. During her time in the country, Almaas lived in Nasr City, Cairo. Almaas visited the country as part of an exchange programme of AFS Interculture Programme. She initially approached AFS for a scholarship to

study in Switzerland, but her application was unsuccessful. The organisation later informed her she was found eligible for a scholarship to Egypt. An excited Almaas could not wait for her adventure to one of the world’s oldest country’s to begin. Both her parents have encouraged their only daughter to travel the world before settling down. Sitting at the Helderberg Gazette office, accompanied by her mother, she excitedly tells tales about pyramids, fermented fish and sleeping in the desert. During her time in Egypt, Almaas says nothing drastic or life threaten-

ing happened. She, however, recalls how her host father and brother narrowly escaped a possible bombing. “While standing in a bank queue, my host father noticed a robot or drone wheel to a stop right next to him. As it rolled away, he realised it had removed a bomb,” she says. “Wherever you go in Egypt, there is always military presence. All the shopping malls have metal detectors, which took some getting used to’’. Almaas completed her academic school career up until Grade 11 at Parel Vallei High. She completed Grade 12 in Egypt. She says she prefers South African

schools to those in her host country. “SA schools are way better – it’s more organised and the teachers do a better job. The student-teacher relationship in Egypt is also good,” she explains. She says she also missed celebrating Eid at home. “In Egypt, Christians are very respectful during the month of Ramadaan, while Muslims respected the Christian period of Lent,” Almaas recalls. “On the day of Eid, I especially missed home. The two countries cultures do not celebrate the holy day in the same way. I really missed my mother’s cooking; the main dish in

Egypt was fermented fish, which was not my favourite dish.” Almaas’s mother, Shaakira says: “I am very proud of my daughter. She is mature and strong. Despite some negative comments, she made the most of the opportunity.” Almaas has applied to study at local and international tertiary institutions to study medicine or psychology. “I want to be a doctor, so that I can provide a service to small communities,” she says. “My best experience in Egypt, was when we slept in the desert under the stars with sleeping bags only. I will definitely miss Egypt and it’s people.’’

Safety officer for G’ Bay Gordon’s Bay is one of 17 communities in the Cape with a dedicated Metro Police officer. Earlier this month, the Metro Police launched an awareness drive to introduce residents of these communities to their local neighbourhood safety officer (NSO). A series of posters and pamphlets was launched. According to a City of Cape Town statement, NSOs are experienced Metro Police officers assigned to an area which has a business area and schools. “NSOs will work closely with all stakeholders in the area to identify and tackle problems which may lead to crime and disorder,” it states. “NSOs will become the contact point for residents to report criminal and domestic issues.”

There are currently 16 NSOs serving neighbourhoods in Gordon’s Bay, Nyanga, Ocean View, Hout Bay, Mitchell’s Plain, Crossroads, Bishop Lavis, Atlantis, Athlone, Harare, Hanover Park, Khayelitsha, Manenberg, Muizenberg, Woodstock, Bridgetown and Gatesville. Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith says the officers will be assigned to these communities for a period of up to seven years. “The officers aim to identify opportunities to reduce risks and increase local well-being of residents by knowing and being known in the communities. They will also establish a web of individuals and organisations who have insight into the neighbourhood and become their partners in creating a safe and caring community.”

AT THE HELM: Strand Community Policing Forum held its AGM on Tuesday 17 February. A new committee was elected. At the back, from left, are Ronald Hendricks, pastor Patrick Sauls (treasurer), deputy chairperson Desmond Peens, Yagia Abrahams, Andries Coetzee, Albert Smith and Strand visible police head Lieutenant-Colonel Sanele Zama. Seated in front, from left, are Jamiah Scholtz (secretary), Strand station commander Colonel Fana Dlamini, CPF chairperson Franscina Lukas, Shamiema Abrahams (project coordinator) and Matilda Arnolds.

The public participation process for a proposed low-cost housing project in Sir Lowry’s Pass is open with the Environmental Impact Assessment being conducted. The City of Cape Town has proposed to build between 350 and 367 low-cost houses on a portion of Farm 1 438, south of Knorhoek Road. The development area is west of the railway line and the residential area of Sun City and

borders Old Sir Lowry’s Pass Road. A draft basic assessment report is available for a 30-day commenting period. A copy of the report can be viewed at the Sir Lowry’s Pass Library or www.enviropart.co.za from 23 February. Comments must be submitted before Thursday 26 March and must include a name and contact details.

SIYABULELE MTYA: The Proteas are definitely going to win. I have faith in them and they are playing well. They’re not as disappointing as our national soccer team; one can count on the Proteas, but they should look out for the West Indies.

AB de Villiers is vanselfsprekend my gunsteling-speler.

SYDNEY VAN NIEKERK: Pakistan is my gunsteling-span; hulle is die beste so ver.

AB de Villiers is my gunsteling-speler en ek voel Suid-Afrika gaan wen. Hulle moet wel pasop vir die Indiëse-krieketspan. FOTO’S: TAMSYN JANTJIES

vides trading infrastructure such as hard-surfaced areas, fixed trading stands, roof structures and, in some instances, ancillary services such as access to water and electricity at some sites. However, in many cases, the infrastructure that is provided can be improved,” Bloor states. “Solutions can include infrastructure proposals such as creating stands that are maintainable, cost-effective or easy to transport, as well as how to optimise site management and to improve customer experience.” For the challenge, the City is partnering with Citymart, a global organisation focused on opening government processes to civic innovation through engagement with residents. Once the suggestions have been submitted, the viable solutions will be selected to help strengthen the City’s approach to informal trading through knowledge sharing, a pilot project or a demonstration. The platform will also offer informal traders the opportunity to be exposed to best practice in the industry worldwide. To submit suggestions, visit http://my.citymart.com/Call/ CoCT_economic_innovation to submit solutions. Informal traders who do not have access to a smartphone are encouraged to make use of the City’s free SmartCape internet access at libraries. The deadline for submissions is Thursday 16 April.

A call from the City of Cape Town for locals’ suggestions on how to improve the informal trading across the metropole, may strengthen the ever-growing sector. The City’s Economic Development Department launched the Citymart Challenge last week. It aims to, through submissions of ideas and suggestions, improve infrastructure at one of the more than 4 000 informal trading sites managed by the City. “Through this call, we hope to rejuvenate informal trading, by soliciting input from the public which could provide possible solutions to the challenges or problems the sector is facing,” explains Mayoral Committee member for Tourism, Events and Economic Development, Garreth Bloor. “As a significant contributor to our economy, it is important for this sector to grow, and this is an opportunity for the community to be part of making progress by submitting solutions that aim to provide better quality services, within the available resources.” A statement says the sector represents about 12% of Cape Town’s economy and employs about 18% of residents. The City currently has 2 497 trading sites registered on its system. But the City manages more than 4 000 informal business sites in the city centre, informal settlements, rural areas and at tourist hot spots. “Where possible, the City pro-

Snake bites: what not to do

Snake bites can affect body functions in minutes and can be fatal. Anyone bitten should visit a medical practitioner.

Doctor Vernon Wessels from ER24 says a medical practitioner will be able to assess if a bite is venomous, the depth of the bite and if there is possibly underlying structure damage such as tendon sheaths or joint spaces that may have been penetrated. It is important not to panic. “Panicking increases blood circulation, therefore the patient should be kept calm. Apply a bandage to the area as this limits lymphatic drainage. The affected area should be kept still to limit movement,” says Wessels. A description of the snake would

be useful if possible, but there are other ways to identify the venom by looking at the symptoms of the patient. Snake expert Arno Naudé says the most commonly encountered lethal snakes are the spitting cobra, puff adder, snouted cobra, Cape cobra and black mamba. Rinkhals are commonly encountered but rarely bite, just like the boomslang. If you come across a snake, try to get away from it or freeze to determine in which direction the snake is moving. Bites from potentially lethal snakes can cause traumatic injuries through tissue destruction or neurological problems. Smaller adders and snakes, like burrowing asps, can cause swell-

ing, pain and tissue death (necrosis). Snake venom can kill by either causing muscle failure, which causes paralysis and suffocation. “It may also cause the body to go into shock and the organs to shut down. In some cases it can also cause bleeding, which may lead to death,” Naudé said. What not to do when bitten by a snake: ) Do not wash or cut the wound or try to suck out the venom; ) Do not use home remedies; no ice, heat packs or electrical shocks should be used. ) Alcohol and aspirin should be avoided. ) No tourniquet should be tied around the affected area. – Submitted by ER24

Free open day at Maties

The organisers of Stellenbosch University’s (SU) open day, invite you to find out more about study options on Saturday (28 February) on its Stellenbosch and Tygerberg campuses from 09:00 to 16:00.

The Maties open day is the ideal opportunity for Grade 11 and 12 learners to gain valuable information on university studies, career choices, bursaries and loans; student fees; residence placement, sporting events, accommodation, student associations, student life, and much more. “What makes the open day so special is that prospective students and their parents can talk directly to faculty staff and representatives of the various support services to obtain

exact information on the various fields of study as well as the support services offered by the University,” says Magdel Pretorius, project coordinator and adviser at SU’s Centre for Student Recruitment (CSR). For the first time this year the University is also offering access to a free career counselling questionnaire, available at maties.pacecareers.com/questionnaire. The questionnaire identifies appropriate fields of interest and links this to a variety of careers and study opportunities. “Another innovative program is Course Chooser, at www.coursechooser.co.za, which helps you find programmes for which you qualify, based on your Grade 11 or 12 subjects and marks. This will give you an indication

with whom you should talk to on open day,” comments Pretorius. Those interested in sports can make their way to the lawns next to the Rooiplein to find out more about Maties Sport, or alternatively hop on the Maties shuttle to Coetzenburg to see what Stellenbosch’s sport facilities have to offer. A tour of the JS Gericke Library is also on the programme. Several other educational institutions will be exhibiting at the Maties open day. Visit www.maties.com for the complete Open Day programme with times and venues. To book your spot, find Maties on Facebook at MatiesFanPage, phone Maties on 021 808 9111 or send an email to info@sun.ac.za.

The opening games will be played on Friday 27 February at Mandela Park Stadium, with the final games to be

Toekomstige rugby-sterre

Bel Nicholas Kordom by 072 150 0918 vir meer inligting.

FOTO: TAMSYN JANTJIES
