Unmasking the stigma behind TB TAMSYN JANTJIES Tuberculosis (TB) is a massive disease in our communities, and many people are still in the dark when it comes to the symptoms and treatment. TB Proof has taken it upon themselves to educate people and create more awareness about this viral disease. Dalene von Delft, one of the co-founders, says “There is still too much stigma surrounding TB and so many health care workers contract this disease, we need to educate them on how to look after themselves properly”. Being a health care worker herself, Von Delft contracted multi-drug resistant TB in 2011 and was on medication for 18 months to treat the TB. “When we started out we focused mainly on health care workers and medical students. We realised they are not trained in TB prevention,” explains Von Delft during a visit to the Helderberg Gazette. She says they saw the need and couldn’t just leave colleagues uneducated and uninformed. “When we go out to talk to people we normally start with a personal story to break the ice and lessen the initial stigma. What people don’t understand is that TB is a real risk and
the general public need to know what the symptoms are and also understand that it is a curable disease. We want to get to the point where people won’t be ashamed or scared to ask for a TB test or when they have to go and get their medication at the clinics.” With World TB Day celebrated today, 24 March, the organisation will be continuing with their Unmask Stigma Campaign. “The Unmask Stigma Campaign is the one day we get to make people with TB feel less insecure about their situation. We all put on masks for the whole day and we also have a march in the Cape Town CBD wearing our masks. It is really just the only day of the year TB patients get to be completely themselves”, she says. TB Proof has already made international connections and is recognised by the World Health Orginisation and gets invited to talks regularly. “We have been invited to so many different parts of the world to address committees and parliamentarians on what needs to be done for TB prevention and the treatment of it,” says Von Delft. If you are affected by TB and would like to reach TB Proof for support or become a volunteer you can contact Dalene von Delft on daleneduples@gmail.com or visit their website www.tbproof.org for more information.

Cody Thompson: It’s a very dangerous stretch of road. A friend of mine got hit with a brick in his face that was thrown from a bridge through his windscreen. He had to undergo reconstructive surgery. Three weeks ago more friends of mine were held at gunpoint somewhere along the N2 as well. It is not safe to be anywhere near the N2. There are always people watching you and police and emergency services are never on time, which just makes things worse.
James Toto: I really think that there needs to be a heavy security presence on the N2. Robbers and hijackers have too many opportunities to carry out these malicious acts on innocent people driving on that road.
Direk Jansen: I am visiting and will be moving here soon but I have experienced much worse so I won’t really say that the N2 is a dangerous piece of road.
Mpho Tsalikuba: I regularly drive on the N2 and I must admit that I am scared to drive there at any time of day. When you see people walking along the road or crossing the road you never know what is going to happen next.
FOTO’S: TAMSYN JANTJIES
BIG BUST: Constable Lazaros Khetwa of Strand police shows suspected stolen goods confiscated from a suspect recently. A 22-year-old man was arrested for possession of stolen goods. Constable Mbulelo Mafuna, spokesperson for the Strand Police, says the goods were found in a car in Victoria Street area while the suspect was also in the car. According to Mafuna the man allegedly broke into the car. Another car, a Nissan Maxima, which is believed to have been used by the suspect and in which two car batteries, sunglasses and a toolkit were found, was also seized by police.

City rolls out new double-lockable baboon-proof bins in Gordon’s Bay The City of Cape Town will be initiating a mass roll-out of double-lockable bins to identified areas of Gordon’s Bay.
Residents of Blushing Bride Close, Protea Drive, Nerina Street, Waboom Road, Suikerbossie Road, Kloof Road, Seaview Road, Upper Watt Street and Valley Cul de Sac will have their current municipal bins exchanged for a new double-lockable bin. The roll-out of the new bins is to assist in reducing human/baboon conflict by making waste more difficult for baboons to access. With winter ahead, opportunistic raids by baboons can be expected along the slopes of Gordon’s Bay from the local Chacma baboon
(Papio ursinus) troop. Baboons are wild animals and can be very dangerous. Treat them with caution. ) Never feed baboons in any way. ) Warn neighbours when baboons are in the vicinity. ) Never allow baboons to feel welcome in the neighbourhood. Residents need to defend their ‘territory’ and chase baboons away by making a loud noise, clapping hands or spraying water. ) Never use any method of deterrent that could potentially kill or injure an animal. The use of equipment, such as pellet guns, is illegal and residents could be held responsible for acts of cruelty towards animals. ) Keep refuse bins locked and secured.
) Refrain from leaving food on display. ) Do not leave pet food outside. ) Do not put seed out for wild birds. ) Avoid planting edible herbs, vegetables, bulbs, berries or fruit trees, which will attract baboons to your garden. ) Remove excess and fallen fruit from fruit trees. ) Close windows and doors when baboons are in the area. ) Use the 24-hour Baboon Hotline number to alert officials of baboons. For any further information or to report any baboon-related incidents, phone the baboon management hotline on 021 957 4725 (ext 241 3061).

Sticky hot cross buns 24 buns
Ingredients: 900 g white bread flour 5 ml salt 10 ml ground mixed spice 90 g sugar 230 g mixed dried fruit (raisins, sultanas and currants) 14 g instant dried yeast 100 ml lukewarm milk 250 ml lukewarm water 50 ml golden syrup 110 g butter, melted 2 large eggs, beaten Topping: 35 g white bread flour 100 ml golden syrup 1 large egg, beaten 2 cinnamon sticks 5 ml ground ginger Method Mix flour, salt, mixed spice, sugar, fruit and yeast together in a large mixing bowl. Make a well in the centre. Mix milk, water, syrup and butter together. Pour into the well. Add beaten eggs, then gradually stir
in the flour from the sides of the well to form a soft dough. Turn out on to a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until elastic. Return dough to the bowl, cover with a damp cloth and leave in a warm place to rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour). Turn out on to a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes. Divide into 24 equal pieces and roll each into a ball. Place on a greased baking tray, leaving a little space between each ball. Cover again and leave to rise in a warm place until doubled in size. To make topping, mix flour, 15 ml syrup and egg together to form a smooth paste. Spoon into a piping bag that has a small, smooth nozzle and pipe a cross on to each bun. Place baking tray in the oven, preheated to 240 ºC, and reduce temperature to 200 ºC. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. While buns are baking, heat remaining syrup, with cinnamon sticks and ginger, in a small saucepan. Allow to simmer gently for 15 minutes, then remove cinnamon sticks. As soon as buns come out of the oven, brush warm syrup over the tops and allow it to soak in. Leave buns to cool on a wire rack. Enjoy warm or cold.
Home-made hot cross buns will be a sure treat this Easter.

stage this event. “The tournament is so needed in our communities so that the children stay engaged in sport, which will keep them away from evils such as gangs, drugs and alcohol. “Although our schools and junior clubs do play against each other quite regularly, it is not frequently enough, which is why this tournament is so important. “The DistrictMail can be assured that the Macassar community will support this tournament in mass and wholeheartedly and the entire community is very excited that a junior tournament like this will be held at the Macassar sports grounds for the first time. “I would like to thank the DistrictMail and all other sponsors involved in making this tournament happen. All the boys participating in the event are as excited as we are and are really looking forward to the day.” The MYRC organising committee have confirmed that all plans are running smoothly and are confident that the event will be a great sports spectacle. The first games will kick off at 08:30 and prize giving will take place at 14:30. Anyone interested in running a refreshment stall at the grounds on the day should call Joseph Noble on 083 505 2854.
