Residents of the Ethembeni informal settlement in Lwandle seen rebuilding their homes on Monday after a fire on Sunday left almost 200 people homeless.
Everything lost in blaze DELIAH BRINKHUIS Lwandle resident Asanda Mini (21) was rebuilding his home yesterday (Monday) instead of studying for his National Senior Certificate Mathematics exams today. Mini is one of almost 200 people left homeless after a fire razed 52 houses in the Ethembeni informal settlement just before 02:00 on Sunday. Mini ,who lives with his 32-yearold sister and her two children (3 and 7), says they lost everything, includ-
ing all his school books, in the fire. According to Lwandle police spokesperson Constable Mthokozisi Gama, a case of arson is being investigated after it was reported that a man had allegedly set his girlfriend’s home alight. No injuries were reported. The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management reported that 60 children were among those displaced. They provided food, blankets and building material to the affected residents. On Monday, people manoeuvring
wheelbarrows carrying remnants of the fire or building material, were a familiar site in the area. Many men were seen hard at work toiling in the heat as they rebuilt their informal homes. Bonisile Nogcinisa, who works in the Strand industrial area, was assisted by colleagues who brought wooden boards to him so that he could rebuild his home. Disaster Risk Management has emphasised the importance of fire safety. In a media statement people were urged to “isolate electrical de-
vices and extinguish gas burners, candles, lamps and paraffin stoves, when not in use, in order to prevent fires.” Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Marius Fransman, visited the area that morning. Fransman said he would correspond with Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille to request “immediate relief” for the residents. Anyone who can assist the residents can phone community leader Simthembile Mfencane on 073 248 0407.
