Khoisan royals officially wed in Somerset West Gordon’s Bay has been home to South Africa’s King of the Khoisan for the past nine years. His Royal Highness King Khoebaha Cornelius III, otherwise known as Calvin Cornelius, and his wife of 17 years by Khoi law, got married in the 1819 New Apostolic church in Somerset West on 16 December last year. Even though they have been married in accordance with traditional laws for so long , they decided to marry in a modern day church to have their marriage recognised by South African laws. Sitting at the Helderberg Gazette offices, Queen Jenny Cornelius tells of how she fell in love with her husband six years prior to being formally introduced. It was while he was singing On the wings of love, her favourite song, in a karaoke competition in the early ’90s. She immediately wanted to be introduced to him but nobody seemed to want to do so. Six years later she was invited to attend a friend’s aunt’s wake where she was introduced to him and only realised much later during their first date who he was and confessed to falling in love with him the night of that competition. One can tell by the look on his face that he loves to hear this story just as much as she likes to tell it. Both of them were married and separated before they started to date and have five children between the two of them, Cindy Hamilton (34), Ryan Hamilton (31), Tayrene Booysen (24), Shudon Abrahams (24) and Calvin Junior Cornelius (19). They are a close-knit family. The king is very passionate about his monarchy and does all he can to protect his people and their lineage, though its mostly been an uphill battle. The queen firmly stands behind him and is every bit the supportive wife.

King Khoebaha Cornelius III and his wife, Queen Jenny Cornelius are very much in love.

City wants to legislate alternative smoking devices

The City of Cape Town will escalate its efforts this year for legislative clarity on the wide array of alternative smoking devices and habits that have become commonplace in South Africa. Earlier this year, City Health solicited legal opinion from the National Department of Health about the use of e-cigarettes. This continues to be a grey area, not only in South Africa but around the globe, and is currently not provided for in the Tobacco Control Amendment Act. Ongoing research into hookah pipes or “hubbly bubblies” as the devices are commonly known, indicates that they are decidedly more dangerous than societal attitudes suggest. The most recent study in the United States of America found that 39% of teens and young adults who had previously smoked hookah pipes went on to smoke cigarettes. “Hookah pipes are very popular in Cape Town, not just among adults, but also children, because there is a perception that the flavoured tobacco is somehow not harmful,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member

As dit af is gedurende kosmaak-tyd, dan sal ek altyd vra dat my man moet braai.

Nolitha Boya: Luckily I already have a gas stove at home. During blackouts I like to spend time with my family and we listen to my old battery operated FM radio.

Nosipho Mgwagweni: I live on my own so there really is not much for me to do. So I just listen to my battery operated FM radio FOTO’S: TAMSYN JANTJIES

for Health, Councillor Benedicta van Minnen. “Tobacco is tobacco, no matter what the flavour. We need to be more mindful as a society about the burden we’re placing on the healthcare system. In the Cape especially, we have very high levels of TB and other respiratory diseases and so we need to make every effort to combat those, including prevention through responsible personal choices.” City Health has met with researchers from both the University of Cape Town and the University of the Western Cape. The consensus is that while research is not definitive, smoking hookah pipe is harmful. Researchers are also in agreement that nicotine remains one of the most addictive substances, especially for young people. “I will be raising the issue with the national health minister to push for legal clarity on the use of hookah pipes and e-cigarettes. “I am not necessarily pushing for a ban on the devices, because to be fair there is no definitive proof of their impact, but we do need to close the legislative vacuum where these devices are concerned.”

Dogs need food Animal Welfare Helderberg is in dire need of dog food as their supplies are running low. The kennels are particularly full and food is used up quickly. “We normally feed our very thin dogs twice a day, but we are no longer able to do so,” says Clare Bezuidenhout, AWS Helderberg volunteer. Any food donations can be dropped off at the kennels in Mansfield Crescent, Gordon’s Bay or at the Somerset West shop at 42 Reitz Street.

Bezuidenhout requests that no “no name brands” and very cheap food be donated as it upsets the dogs’ tummies. “Our vet highly recommends Ultradog.” Monetary donations can be deposited in their account: Animal Welfare Helderberg, Std Bank, Acc no 072286547, Branch Code 033012, Ref: FOOD.

4. As jy jou resolusies verbreek, probeer weer. Stay cool and hydrated Bag of tools recovered to avoid heat stroke Hot weather can be expected for the weeks to come and the harvesting and school athletics season is in full swing. The provincial Health Department says babies, elderly people and those working or exercising in hot places are at particular risk for heat stroke or exhaustion. Tips to survive the heat: ) People using chronic medication need to drink extra water during heat waves to ensure that their kidneys function well. ) Stay out of the sun if at all possible, if not, wear a large hat to protect the head from the sun. Use an umbrella to add shade and use a small wet towel or cloth under hats or on shoulders to help keep cool. ) Stay hydrated – in the current temperatures, staying hydrated is most important – drink as much water as you need. ) Always carry water with you. ) Ensure that elderly people and the infirm

have easy access to water. ) Breastfeed on demand – breast milk is all that babies younger than six months require, you need not give the baby water or tea to ‘cool down.’ ) Breastfeeding moms must remember to drink extra water. Cold rooibos tea also makes a refreshing and healthy drink. ) Take your baby to the clinic at the first sign of diarrhoea and/or vomiting ) Keep babies in the shade or indoors. ) Wipe baby down with a clean damp cloth – this will help keep them cool. ) Do not cover babies in a lot of clothing and blankets; light clothing is sufficient. ) Keep babies and children in the shade. ) Avoid sports activities if possible, if sport is essential; ensure that there is a lot of water and rehydration solution available. ) Children must wear hats and sunblock ) Keep children indoors between 11:00 and 16:00

Help needed to find parents The Department of Social Development in Somerset West is requesting the public’s assistance in locating the families of four children. The department is looking for the biological father, Alton Ricardo Ontong of a 16year-old. The teenager’s mother, Mazaan Ontong, passed away on 27 January last year and the father is believed to have moved from Ebrahiem Bazier Street, Gustrouw, Strand to Kwa-Zulu Natal. The child is currently in the care of the maternal grandmother, Magrieta Toring from Strand. The department is also searching for Phika and Ngubana, who are allegedly the biological fathers of two children aged five and seven.

Two Gordon’s Bay police officers recovered a “mysterious” bag of tools while on patrol on Monday 19 January after 06:00. Constables Edmund Minaar and Deon Robertson they spotted two suspicious-looking individuals walking in Faure Marine Drive, in the direction of Strand. Upon closer inspection they noticed the men carrying a heavy bag over their shoulders. After questioning the man (35) and his mother (53), they could provide satisfactory answers as to how they came into the possession of the bag, which included electrical goods and building tools. They were apprehended and taken to the Gordon’s Bay Police Station where they were detained for possession of presumably stolen property. They appeared in court on Tuesday 20 January. The case was postponed to 10 February.

The children find themselves in the care of Nompumelelo Gova from Asanda Village, Strand after their biological mother, Limpho Sweetness Lethala, passed away. Lastly, the department is seeking the public’s assistance in tracking down the biological parents, Xoliswa Skeyi and Thula Heleni, of a two-year-old child. The parents are believed to have lived together at G10 David Ngandi–Silahliwe Street, Lwandle until 19 January last year, when the mother, Skeyi, reported she is travelling to Queenstown in the Eastern Cape and never returned. Anyone with information can contact social worker Adelle Meyer or Shirna Jansen on 021 840 3500, during office hours (07:30 – 16:00).

Heat stroke can be fatal and should be treated as a medical emergency. Heat exhaustion is a less severe condition but can quickly progress to heat stroke if left untreated. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke occur when the body is unable to lower its temperature to normal levels through the skin or by sweating. Dehydration can cause heat stroke because the body is unable to sweat fast enough to dissipate the heat. Signs of heat exhaustion include: • Nausea or vomiting • A pale skin colour • Tiredness and weakness • Headache • Muscle cramps and dizziness

If the symptoms are severe or the victim has a heart condition or high blood pressure, seek urgent medical help. Give the person an oral rehydration solution. Do not add too much salt – the mixture should taste like tears. Sports drinks or commercial oral rehydration solutions are also effective. If the symptoms worsen or last longer than an hour, seek urgent medical attention. Children under two years are at high risk of dehydration. This is even more dangerous if a child has diarrhoea and/or vomiting. Use a sugar-salt-solution to help them to not dehydrate while you seek medical attention at your nearest clinic or emergency unit.

By hulle is drie komiteelede, links is Jennifer Johnson.
