Suidooster beskadig dak

In this week’s DistrictMail ) New mall proposed for Gordon’s Bay; ) Another robbery at Somerset Mall; ) Traffic headache in the Helderberg; ) Extreme 7s action – in photos

Niemand is beseer nie. FOTO’S: DELIAH BRINKHUIS

For the love of South Africa TAMSYN JANTJIES

Patrick Cromwell describes himself as extremely proud to be a South African citizen and he has taken it upon himself to create awareness of other Awesome South Africans. The Helderberg resident has set-up www.awesomesouthafricans.co.za to showcase the many South Africans doing extraordinary things. The likes of adventurer Riaan Manser and amputee Paul Steyn are some of the Awesome South Africans currently featured on the site, which he started in September last year. His decision to highlight the awesome work and adventures of South Africans came after he realised they do not receive the necessary exposure for their great achievements. Added to this, the Strand resident has faced some difficulties over the years, but he managed to triumph in the end. In October 1999, Cromwell was struck by a rock flung through his car’s windscreen on the N2. He had to undergo reconstructive surgery to rectify the extensive damage to his face. After the surgery, he moved to Holland, where he worked as a forklift driver at a dog food company. But one day, he decided to do more with his life. He enrolled in an internet course at a night school and found himself wanting to broaden his knowledge on the topic. Cromwell then decided to enrol in a beginner web design course. “Before then, I had no idea what a right click was, but when I got into it, I just gelled with what I was learning,” he says. Cromwell was eventually employed in the customer care department of an American company in Holland.

Patrick Cromwell has a love for all things South African and anything to do with the outdoors. He combined the two loves and created an even bigger love, www.awesomesouthafticans.co.za, where he highlights South Africans braving the outdoors for a cause. But after living and working abroad for two and a half years, he returned home for a holiday. “When I went back to Holland, I immediately felt homesick. So I went straight to my boss to quit,” Cromwell tells Helderberg Gazette. He moved back home and did some odd jobs before he started his own web designing company, WebDzign, in 2005. Cromwell is a huge fan of the outdoors and keeps up-to-date on South Africans doing exceptional things in the outdoors. “Most of them go on these adventures to raise funds

and awareness for other people, not for themselves.” He is passionate about his brainchild. “I spend more time maintaining the site than I should,” Cromwell admits. The project will be on show at the annual Cape Getaway Show at Lourensford Wine Estate from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 March. In the future, we wants to better manage the public relations side of his website and would like to dedicate all his resources and time on it. “I get no compensation for it; I purely do it for the love of Awesome South Africans.”

Helderberg residents have their say on this year’s budget Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene’s budget speech on last Tuesday (24 February) saw a substantial increase in sin tax, with the cost of a packet of 20 cigarettes increasing by 82c, beer by 15,5c, sparkling wine by 48c and a 750ml bottle of whiskey by R3,77. Electricity will increase by 2c and the fuel levy was raised with 80,5c. Welcome news was that pensioners can look forward to an extra R60 in their wallet, child grants will increase to R330 and foster grants have increased by R30 to R860. The Helderberg Gazette asked locals for their views.

“The things we cannot change, we have to accept,”

Ntobeko Tonisi from Asanda Village says the 2015 budget is not favourable for poor citizens. He says he agrees with the hike in sin tax, as smoking contributes to illness and government funding has to pay for treatment. “People driving under the influence of alcohol cause accidents and the government has to fund the Road Accident Fund as well. Electricity is a necessity which we cannot be without. Government needs to find an alternative, like solar power.”

Fanie Hendricks by 021 856 2317 of ao. Cobus Greeff by 082 469 0916 bel.

PRECAUTIONARY: Residents of a road in Somerset West, close to the entrance of Hottentot-Hollands High School, made a quick plan when a manhole cover in the street was stolen. Antonie van Wyk, a resident of the street, says the manhole cover was stolen on Friday 20 February and the incident was reported to the City of Cape Town. To prevent any vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians from falling into the manhole or damaging their vehicles, a very large dead branch was placed in the hole. The effect: a grim image of a dead tree growing in the street. PHOTO: DALEEN FOUCHÉ

Sports league to fight crime at schools “A child in sport is a child out of court” is the slogan Vincent Daniels, the President of Sports Against Crime South Africa (SACSA), will be using to drive the all new Sports Against Crime Helderberg school league.

He hopes that the new programme will assist children to reach their professional sport goals and shift their mindsets towards sports instead of crime. To achieve this SACSA has partnered with SAPS Western Cape Provincial Social Crime Projects to establish the Sports Against Crime Helderberg school league which kicks off later this month. This will be the first time in the history of a SACSA crime prevention exercise that the crime prevention league kicks off in the Helderberg, which falls under the Khayelitsha SAPS cluster. Daniels conveyed his thanks to all the sponsors who rallied together to help make this event a reality, namely: Pick n Pay Boxer Stores, Old Mutual, Coca Cola, Delta Panelbeaters, Jacob Transport, Global Motors and Advance Auto Electric. Included in the crime prevention league will be sports workshops and coaching clinics which will be hosted and facilitated by professional sports players and clubs. The sports codes which will be involved in this campaign will be soccer, rugby and netball. All 25 clusters in the Western Cape will take part in this league and the final will take place X1PTU65R-HP030315

on Saturday 24 October. Only the top teams will participate in the finals where the winner (and winning teams) of each sport discipline will receive trophies and medals plus there will also be awards for the player of the match. Helderberg schools who will be participating in the project are: Temperance Town, Dr J.G. Joubert, Rusthoff Primary, Marvin Park, Solomon Qatyana, Danie Ackermann. The programme for the crime prevention league for 2015 is: 28 March - Danie Ackermann Sports fields, Somerset West; 11 April - Temperance Town, Gordon’s Bay; 2 May - Dr JG Joubert, Rusthof. 12 September - Lwandle sportsfields and 24 October SAPS Pinelands. Each school must provide referees for each sports code while the SAPS clusters will provide transport to the different venues for the pupils and teachers. The SAPS officials will be responsible for the safety of the pupils competing in these events. Wynberg SAPS clusters will also be holding a sports against crime sports day on Saturday 25 April at the Wynberg Military Base where soccer and netball will be played. The following SAPS stations will be involved in organising the day: SAPS Wynberg, SAPS Grassy Park, SAPS Diep River, SAPS Kirstenhof, and SAPS Steenberg. The other 25 SAPS Clusters will hold their own individual sports against crime sports days until the finals on 24 October. For more information phone Vincent Daniels at 082 865 1144.
