Give books for Mandela Book Drive at Pick n Pay Pick n Pay and the Nelson Mandela Foundation have joined arms to help South Africans answer Nelson Mandela’s call to “Take Action and Inspire Change”. Until 17 July, Pick n Pay stores will have collection points for the public to drop off books for the Mandela Day Book Drive. These will be handed to the Nelson Mande-
la Centre of Memory on 18 July and will be donated to the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s 94+ School project which supports Mandela’s 94th birthday and legacy by giving hope and dignity to 94+ disadvantaged pupils, and the Container Libraries project, which promotes a reading culture. “It is a privilege for Pick n Pay to be work-
ing together with the Nelson Mandela Foundation – let us not forget that Tata Mandela has spoken about how reading sustained and kept him and his fellow prisoners up to date with the real world while they were imprisoned on Robben Island,” says Bronwen Rohland, Pick n Pay’s Director of Marketing and Sustainability.

Calling on all animal lovers for assistance THE assistance of all cat lovers, animal lovers or just compassionate residents is needed to help the Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch (AWSS) complete a quarantine facility for their cattery. The construction of the facility was started on the premises of the AWSS in March 2012, but the job could not be completed. They have therefore been left with a roofless skeleton of a building for the past few months. According to shelter manager Nicci Collins the AWSS has had a need for a proper quarantine facility for a a number of years. The facility which is needed, should be a 24m² room with 12 shortterm holding cages. It is used to monitor the health status of new arrivals before they are transferred to the cattery where they can be viewed for adoption. Currently these cats are accommodated in wire cages in a wendy house, where it’s very hot in summer and cold in winter. Nicci adds that it’s crucial the facility be completed before September,
when the next “kitten season” starts. “Between October and April hundreds of kittens and cats are admitted to the shelter. We currently only have two cat rooms, with a total of 20 cages. “We desperately need this additional facility to manage the situation and secure the safety and wellbeing of all the kittens that will be needing homes.” The AWSS currently needs about R40 000 to complete the facility. Any contributions will be greatly appreciated. Donations of services or materials such as galvanised steel gates for the cages or tiles for the floors and cages are also very welcome. For further information on the facility’s facility or to make a donation, call Elmarie Immelman (cattery manager) on 083 692 9549 or send an email to awscats@metroweb.co.za. Those interested in making a donation can also call Nicci Collins (shelter manager) on 083 573 6720 / 021 883 9129 or send an email to animalws@telkomsa.net.

New online radio station launched A NEW online radio station, Assembly Radio, was launched on 2 July. An extension of the live music giant The Assembly, this online station aims to connect listeners to unique music content. Hosted shows will play out from 10:00 to 22:00 and will be broadcast live from a concept booth within The Assembly venueat Harrington Street, in the heart of District Six.. A ground breaking online station, Assembly Radio is positioned to be a powerful platform for our thriving local music scene. Assembly Radio is being set up by For Music Lovers, a company that specialises in creating unique audio content.
When asked about why this station is relevant, FML co-founder Kevin Kai said: “I think the great thing with online radio is that we have the freedom to broadcast what we want, when we want. We’re not restricted like the traditional broadcast stations and because we’re online, our level of interaction with our listeners is far more engaging.” The online station will play a variety of genres with the over arching theme being that it’s about music played for music lovers. “Traditional radio in South African seems to have lost its way when it comes to playing music that people want to listen to. To be able to tap into music culture and
create a unique soundtrack that is full of rich content is amazing,” said Alana Cremonte, co-founder of FML. Assembly Radio has access to incredibly unique music content because it’s an extension of The Assembly venue. That means a wealth of one of a kind artist interviews and live music content that very few radio stations have easy access to. The Assembly venue has been in action since December 2007 and since then has grown into a well established giant within Cape Town’s music scene. Tune in to Assembly Radio on your phone, laptop, work computer, home computer or cellphone here: www.theassembly.co.za/radio.

Mass Hysteria at GrandWest A NEW side-splitting show with eight of South Africa’s best comedians will be showcased at the GrandWest Grand Arena on 28 July at 20:00. Mass Hysteria is what South Africans are best at,” says co-producer John Vlismas. “Whether it’s a penis or a march, we love a reason to scream and shout, so when we were let down by an event organizer, we decided to take charge and do the shows ourselves.” A top comedy line up has been assembled for the show which is heading to GrandWest Arena, Cape Town on 28 July. In a shock move, solo artist, Casper de Vries, joins Cape Town favourites Nik Rabinowitz, Marc Lottering, Kurt Schoonraad and Ndumiso Lindi with Tumi Morake, Mark Banks and John Vlismas to create the most outrageous and brilliant stand-up show ever seen in SA. Seeing as our current national leadership is behaving like a joke, the show is themed on Cabinet, with each comedian having a portfolio: Nik Rabinowitz – Minister of Samp and Kosher Beans Marc Lottering – Minister of the Interior Design Kurt Schoonraad – Minister of Flats, Boxwine and Wind John Vlismas – Minister who swears to tell Truth Tumi Morake – Minister of International Affairs and Pan African Children Ndumiso Lindi – Roosta in Chief Mark Banks – Minister of Environment, Bungalows, Pest Control and Barcodes Casper De Vries – Minister Van Twitter. “The great thing about this show is that there is no middle man, so the line-up is amazing, but the ticket prices are not high, and the acts are all on bonus structures,” says Whacked partner, Taffia Keight. “We’re interested in keeping the artist’s rights intact, as there have been problems in the recent past, and we feel that going forward, it is important that the organizers don’t end up taking the lion’s share – after all, no one has ever asked for an organizer’s autograph… “Casper has never been part of a line-up show, and we are very excited that he has joined the other headliners for this run. It’s not often that you get a line-up where every single artist has a big following, and we feel that this line-up is providing excellent quality at the price.” Tickets cost R140 and are available at Computicket.

Top tips for a painless tax season The tax season is with us again, with filing for the 2012 tax year having begun on 1 July and ending 30 November.
Taxes can be a burden. PHOTO: SUPERCFOSERVICES.BLOGSPOT.COM
This tax year covers 1 March 2011 to 29 February 2012. Here are a few tips to help you get through tax filing time with as little stress and heartache as possible. Get started now or as soon as possible Filing an income tax return can be a surprising amount of work. It’s best to get an early start so that you can submit your return before the rush starts. If you are due a refund, the sooner you file, the sooner you’ll get your money. And if you have underestimated your tax contribution, you may be able to save substantially on penalties and interest payable if you submit early. Use eFiling The SARS eFiling service is convenient, secure and easy to use. It saves you time and hassle of messing around with a paper-based
return and standing in a long queue. You can file seven days a week, 24 hours per day with no problem. Plus, if you use eFiling you have until 23 November to submit your return. If you file manually – by post or SARS drop-box – you must file by 28 September. If you are new to eFiling, register now and spend some time learning how it works. Make sure you have all your supporting documents ready Gather all your supporting documentation so that you have it on hand to file and can produce it if SARS asks for it in an audit. Supporting documents may include: ) Your IRP5 tax certificate from your employer; ) an income tax certificate from your medical aid scheme; ) a list and the receipts of medical expenses not covered by your medical aid scheme; ) a tax certificate for your contributions towards a retirement annuity fund; and ) a detailed logbook specifying your busi-
ness trips and travel costs for the period. Be 100% honest It is illegal to lie on your return by inflating your expenses or not declaring your correct income. Since the inception of eFiling there has been a substantial increase in random audits performed by SARS, accompanied by severe penalties for false declarations on tax returns. The penalties, interest and stress of saving a bit on your tax bill are simply not the risk, since your chance of getting caught out is bigger than ever. Not sure of something? Ask a tax professional SARS has tried to make life easy for the taxpayer by simplifying the paperwork and process of paying tax, but tax affairs can still be complicated. Rather contact the SARS call centre on 0800 00 7277 (0800 00 SARS) or a tax expert to ensure you do your return correctly the first time than risk getting something wrong. Visit www.legalandtax.co.za, phone 0860 587 587 or email info@legalandtax.co.za.
Belê nou in jou gesondheid
Tax time – but don’t panic
“SNAAKS hoe min aandag en navorsing die gemiddelde belegger deesdae aan sy / haar keuse van ’n mediese skema bestee indien mens dit vergelyk met die tyd en moeite wat gewoonlik gepaard gaan met ’n suiwer finansiële of ander belegging,” sê Anton Rijnen, uitvoerende hoof van Medihelp. Volgens Rijnen ia ’n belegging in hul gesondheidsorg net so belangrik as enige ander belegging in hul portefeuljes is.
July is the beginning of the tax season, and some taxpayers may get tempted to put filing a return off until the last minute – but do you really want to stand in a queue outside SARS on deadline day? Piet Nel, Tax Suite project director, advises people to seek expert advice. “Help is at hand, and people who consult with professional tax practitioners are more likely to avoid penalties – and be confident that the information they give will be correct and in their best interests.” Finding a tax specialist might seem a daunting exercise for some people, especially those who have never had to submit returns before. The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants recognises the need that individuals and small business have in dealing with the increasingly complex and ever-changing tax laws. So the institute launched an online por-

tal – something like the Yellow Pages for tax specialists who are available to help. Taxpayers will be able to find a tax specialist who operates in their area, and who can assist with their particular concern. To access the Tax Suite portal, visit www.taxsuite.co.za and choose the specific area of tax that help is needed in. The list includes individual, corporate, employee and international tax; estate duty; mergers and acquisitions; transfers and pricing; retirement and savings; and VAT. Simply click on the choice, view the list of relevant consultants and, finally, choose a tax specialist who operates in your area. “By using a tax specialist, taxpayers are likely to save money – and they will have the benefit of knowing their affairs are in order, and that they have done the right thing for the country by being completely tax compliant,” Nel concludes.
Plan your budget for possible interestrate rises Although interest rates have been very low since 2009, there are signs in the economy that this might change in the near future, and as a result consumers should start adding in a possible interest-rate rise when planning their finances. This means that a consumer who borrows money now should provide beforehand for a larger monthly amount due because of a possible interest rise. Economists predict that the Monetary Policy Committee, with South African Reserve Bank governor Gill Marcus at the helm, will announce a rise in interest rates either towards the end of this year or in early 2013. These predictions imply a possible rise in the current repurchase (“repo”) rate – the rate at which the central bank lends to commercial banks in the country – of 5,5%. “It’s especially important to think about what an interest rate rise of one or two percent would do to your debt repayments,” says the CEO of the National Debt Mediation Association, Magauta Mphahlele. “Calculate the rise in rands and cents so you can change your budget to fit a possible rise in your monthly part-payments.” In terms of the National Credit Act, the formula used to calculate the interest rate is linked to the repo rate and, as a result, any changes to the repo rate will affect the rate consumers pay for their secured and unsecured loans. This is the case for those who have chosen a changing interest rate. A changing interest rate means that your interest will go up when the repo rate rises and will go down if it declines. Depending on the circumstances, consum-
ers with fixed rates will not be effected as their agreements protect them from reporate rises. A fixed rate means that your interest will stay the same when the repo rate goes up; this ensures that you will be able to keep the same monthly repayments. The main advantage of a fixed rate in this sense is that it creates certainty for budget purposes, but possible costing downsides should also be thought of – this option needs to be understood properly by consumers before they choose it. “Consumers should use the extra money they have when the rates go down to pay off as much of their debt as possible,” reiterates Mphahlele. “Those taking up new credit must add in possible rate rises as part of the costs they must afford, and they should make sure that they will still be able to afford their repayments when the repo rate rises.” Although the relation of household debt to available income in South Africa declined from 78,2% in 2010 to 75,8% in 2011, it is still high and consumers must still work hard to make sure they are exposed to less debt. “An interest rate rise of just one or two percent can have a long-term combining effect on the total interest you pay over time,” explains Mphahlele. “Do a proper budget to make sure that you have enough spare cash to pay the larger monthly payments.” Consumers who are experiencing payment difficulties are urged to contact the National Debt Mediation Association for advice and assistance. The National Debt Mediation Association helpline can be reached on 0 086 111 6362.

Kayamandi’s cycling superstars GERRIT SCHAAFSMA Two of Kayamandi’s most promising cyclists recently left for Europe to compete in one of the continent’s most gruelling mountain biking challenges. Azukile Simayile (19) and Sipho Madolo (21) flew to Germany on Saturday to take part in the eight-day, 600 km TransAlp Challenge. Sipho and Azukile were the winners of this year’s Exxaro Development Jersey at Absa Cape Epic race. The prize for winning the development jersey is the opportunity to participate in the TransAlp Challenge. The race is considered one of the most challenging in the world and includes vertical climbs totalling 20 000 m. “It is a dream come true for us,” says Sipho. During the last month, he and Azukile have been training intensively for the upcoming race. Azukile and Sipho are both still at school in Kayamandi and have had to work hard to fit their academic commitments into their intensive training programme.
“We train 15 hours on weekends and about three hours on weekdays,” says Sipho. “Its tough to find a balance,” adds Azukile, but they are determined to succeed academically, just as they have done in sport. Sipho plans to become an accountant, and Azukile wants to study chemical engineering. They are both members of the Songa.info team, which is based in Kayamandi. Songa.info is a charity started in 2008 by Christoph Sauser, world champion mountain biker, and Songo Fipaza, a well-recognised local community leader and athlete. The organisation provides an opportunity for children to develop sports skills and broaden their horizons. Songo Fipaza is very proud of the achievement of his athletes. “This shows that good things can happen to you if you work hard and are dedicated,” he said at the function where Azukile and Sipho were honoured. Anyone interested in becoming involved with Songo.info can pay a visit to www.songo.info or contact Songo Fipaza on 083 244 0734.
