Gift of R670 000 for Mandela Day THE South African-based family hospitality company, The Spur Group, which feeds over 34 million people across its four restaurant chains every year, is putting its money where the mouths of the nation are. To mark this Nelson Mandela International Day (18 July), the group is setting aside R670 000 to establish The Spur Foundation that will in future manage its public outreach projects. Funds will go to a range of mainly child-focused charities with which the group is already involved, enhancing its already significant support for initiatives such as feeding schemes, while also providing financial aid and basic amenities to impoverished communities and sports development projects

across the country. Mandela Day, first held in 2008 when the former president turned 90, marks the 67 years he spent fighting for human rights, by calling on people worldwide to spend 67 minutes of their time at least once a year, in a way that empowers communities. The donation of R670 000 has been inspired by the call of the organisers of the annual Mandela Day that falls on Madiba’s birthday, to “Take Action, Inspire Change, Make Every Day a Mandela Day”.

‘Communityled’ upgrade in Langrug AN innovative collaboration between government, academia, civil society and a local community in the Boland is showcasing how it is possible for people to take their futures into their own hands. In the case of the project in Langrug, a settlement near Franschhoek, it’s more about working together – for the benefit not only of one community, but also of similar settlements in the region. A partnership between the University of Cape Town (UCT), the Community Organisation Resource Centre (CORC), Shack Dwellers International (SDI) and the Stellenbosch Municipality, the project hinges on community involvement and aims to improve living conditions for Langrug’s population of 4 088 residents. “We believe community-centred and -driven development – in partnership with local municipalities, other non-governmental organisations and stakeholders – is the best approach to upgrade informal settlements,” explains Aditya Kumar, CORC technical coordinator and Langrug project manager. The CORC piloted its unique approach in Langrug, where strong community leader-

ship has emerged. “The Langrug residents have generated their own developmental agenda that has shifted the community mindset from ‘free state-subsidised housing’ to ‘community-led settlement upgrading’,” Kumar says. Community members conducted extensive research to determine their main concerns and probe possible solutions, explains community chairperson Trevor Masiy. “We’ve come up with solutions, and now we’re taking them to the [Stellenbosch] municipality,” he says. Some solutions have already been implemented. “They have opened access streets, relocated several families who blocked access to the settlement, built grey-water channels, provided play parks for children, painted ablution facilities and set up health forums to assist with HIV/Aids counselling,” Kumar elaborates. Masiy and his team of community leaders are also proposing a walking tour of the settlement to increase its visibility among tourists and other visitors. “We’re taking our proposal to the Franschhoek Tourism Bureau and the municipality, and we hope that part of the im-

provement will also involve better road signage to Langrug,” Masiy says. A certain amount of funding has been secured for the project, thanks in part to a memorandum of understanding signed with the Stellenbosch Municipality late last year. UCT’s involvement with the Langrug project adds another distinctive dimension – by bringing research and planning rigour to the initiative. Twenty-six masters students from UCT’s School of Architecture Planning and Geomatics have put work into the project over a 16-week period as part of a course. During six formal visits to and a number of informal interactions with the community, the students were required to conduct an in-depth analysis of Langrug and propose “appropriate spatial development frameworks”. Masiy’s dream is for the Langrug community to develop skills to help themselves and become self-sufficient. “If the poor people come together and speak with one voice, it gives strength to all our communities,” he says. “Each and every one of these communities faces the same issues – and we have to see how we can help each other to improve all our lives.”

Free health screening STELLENBOSCH Square is offering a free health screening service for shoppers from 18 to 20 July. The service will be available daily from 10:00 to 17:00 in the centre court. Sisters from Stellenbosch Hospice will be checking blood pressure, blood sugar and HIV / AIDS status. Those interested can also be screened for TB. At the same time shoppers are invited to participate in Mandela Day by contributing second-hand furniture, books and kitchenware. The contributions received are a main income generator for Stellenbosch Hospice fund-raising. They also need donations of dried or tinned food for emergency food parcels for the Hospice patients. For further information on the health screening service phone Martilize at Stellenbosch Square on 021 880 2385.

A blessed Ramadan to our Muslim readers FOR Muslims, the holy month of Ramadan will start this Friday, and will continue until Saturday 18 August. Note that in the Muslim calendar, a holiday begins on the sunset of the previous day, so observing Muslims will start to honour Ramadan when the sun sets on Thursday. Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar, and is a time

to purify the soul, refocus attention on the Creator and practise self-sacrifice. Muslims are called upon to use this month to reevaluate their lives in light of Islam’s guidance. Fasting in the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, and the month is spent by Muslims fasting from dawn to sunset. Fasting is often thought to figuratively burn away all sins.

Muslims also believe that this is the month in which the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. The first day of the next month is spent in celebration, and is observed as the “Festival of Breaking Fast” or Eid ul-Fitr. The staff of Eikestad Media (Stellenbosch Gazette and Eikestadnuus) wish all our Muslim readers a blessed Ramadan Mubarak.

Where to after matric? MATRICS have to make many stressful decisions during their last year at school, and they are often neither qualified nor able to access the correct information. One of these decisions – whether to study at a college, university or private highereducation institution – can be particularly confusing, especially when pupils continue to be told that certain kinds of institutions are “better”, or chances of finding work when studies are completed are “better”. Dr Felicity Coughlan, director of the Independent Institute of Education, says choosing where to study is a personal decision that must be taken with care, as the various institutions are not the same and one size does not fit all. “When you are making a decision about what to study and where, it is important to remember that there are different opportunities, and that the decision is your own. “You need to think about what you need, what you can afford, and what you would like to get from a learning space, and then choose your institution based on these answers.” Higher education and training minister Blade Nzimande recently motivated matrics to think not only of universities, but all the opportunities available to them within the after-school education and training system. Dr Coughlan welcomes the greater focus on options outside the original offering. “Always make sure that the institution is registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training, but also speak to students and find out the reputation of an institution before spending money and time,” she recommends. With all the after-school institutions available, Coughlan says the following needs to be understood when choosing. There are two broad types of institution available to future students: ) public institutions (approved by the state); and ) private institutions (no state approval). Both the public and private types cover two different kinds of institution: ) further education and training (FET) colleges, at which qualifications are linked to a specific range of jobs or work possibilities (for instance beauty therapy, plumbing, IT or business studies); and ) higher education institutions, which offer qualifications such as degrees, certificates and diplomas from NQF 5 to 10. Only public institutions are allowed to call themselves universities in South Africa. Private higher education institutions can offer the exact same range of qualifications, but may not use the term “university”. Private and public higher-education institutions are bound by the same regulations and have the same commitment to quality. “Each institution – whether public or private, FET college or higher-education institution – has a character and focus of its own,” says Coughlan. “Many are general, and you can follow a range of study options, while others are focused, and offer only a limited range of specialist qualifications.” Future students must look at which institution best caters to their chosen field of interest. “It is thus important that, when you are making a decision about what to study and where, you are aware that there is a web of opportunity available to you. The decision, in the end, is your own, based on what you need, what you can afford and what you would like to get from a learning space.”

Pieter Langeveldt says ‘merci’ Pieter Langeveldt Primary School in Cloetesville has received a gift all the way from France. David and Steffanie Malagu from the town of Châtellerault in the south of France delivered sports clothing for the pupils last Tuesday morning. The gift is from the Châtellerault Rugby Club, which has ties with Stellenbosch stretching back more than 20 years. The club has toured the area twice, and has hosted clubs from Stellenbosch in France. Seen here (back row, from left) are Steffanie and David Malagu and their daughter Lila, along with Theresa Adriaanse, Andrew Cyster (principal of Pieter Langeveldt), Allister Adriaanse and (standing in front) Joney Isaacs, wearing some of the new clothing from France. Theresa and Allister have two sons, Lee and Alexis, who are at present playing professional rugby in France. PHOTO: GERRIT SCHAAFSMA

FOTO’S: VERSKAF
