Stellenbosch360 buys trees for Jamestown My Stellenbosch Family Tree is a Stellenbosch360 initiative with the goal of creating a sense of belonging for all citizens.

They aim to do this by encouraging involvement in Stellenbosch’s green future, as envisioned by the Stellenbosch Municipality’s Million Trees Project.

This project is aimed at greening communities and restoring the ecosystems, which underwrite the health and livelihood of these communities.

A partnership agreement between the Stellenbosch Municipality, Wildlands Conservation Trust and Leaf-a-Legacy was signed on 5 September to ensure the successful implementation of the Million Trees Project.

Diabetes – lifestyle changes essential “I want to scare you, no, I need to scare you, because not enough people realise that about 6% of our population suffers from diabetes, and that’s just the ones who have been diagnosed.”

These are the words of diabetic Emerantia Cupido.

“It takes an average of seven years for a person to be diagnosed with diabetes for the first time and the sad fact according to the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology is that 30% of people with Type II diabetes have already developed complications by the time they are diagnosed,” she said.

“Since I was diagnosed, several of my closest friends have been diagnosed with the disease and some of them have died.

“I am finally writing this article in the hope that I can save your life.

“I am Emerantia Cupido and I am a diabetic.”

These are the closing words of an open letter Cupido, a Western Cape Government Health employ-

ee, has written in an effort to alert people about the dangers of Diabetes Type II. Diabetes Type II is one of the leading causes of death in the Western Cape.

Diabetes Type II can often be avoided by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and making educated choices about one’s health.

These include maintaining a healthy weight, exercising, eating fresh fruit and vegetables daily, drinking lots of water and avoiding high fat, high salt foods such as deep fried potatoes and fatty meats.

It is important to remember that should you develop diabetes, it needs to be managed through a combination of the correction of your lifestyle, taking medication at the right time and correct medication taken at the right time and regular visits to your clinic.

Complications such as kidney problems, heart disease, amputations due to circulatory problems and strokes are common in the di-

abetic patients who don’t manage their diet and take their medication as prescribed.

Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, said: “I admire Emma for telling her story.

It speaks to our call to people to take responsibility for their health.

“Take responsibility for your health. Have your blood sugar tested. Emma is the reason why, with the financial support of the private sector, we are introducing annual health check-ups for all people in the Western Cape.

“Early detection is the answer to an improved health outcome, and a healthier society. Follow Emma’s example.”

British journalist trains Vision AfriKa staff to write better NEIL FORTUIN Vision AfriKa enlisted the expertise of a professional journalist recently to train staff on how to write stories for the organisation’s website to boost the quality of information provided to stakeholders.

The half-day session took place at the charity’s Ikhaya Trust Centre offices in Kayamandi and was conducted by British journalist, Cath Everett.

Everett started working voluntarily for Vision AfriKa about five months ago.

While writing news stories for the website has to date proven tricky for many participants, key insights from the day included the need to provide readers with clear, factually correct information that got straight to the point.

It also became clear how important a story’s opening para-

graph is in encouraging people to read on.

Attendees had to pretend that they were writing a quick postcard to their mum, which meant summarising the main point of their article in less than 30 words.

The course was based on experiential learning techniques, which required attendees to analyse a newspaper and other articles in order to identify their strengths and weaknesses.

After having established what criteria made a good or bad story, staff were then given a mere 20 minutes to write a news article based on a press release in order to put their learning into practice.

Although writing is likely to remain a difficult task for many participant, it also became clear that the more they write, the better they will become as only practice makes perfect.

The kit handover was hosted by SAB and SAFA. The 96 kits delivered to six regions – Cape Town, Eden, West Coast, Winelands, Central Karoo and Overberg – are valued at almost R300 000 in total.

At the heart of this commitment is the company’s 13 year-long investment in the country’s largest grassroots league playing host to over 30 000 players,” said SAB’s national corporate social investment specialist, Sylvester Ndaba.

This year, all 16 teams will receive

official SAB League kits for the first time.

“As part of the continuous development of the league, we thought it critical to provide apparel for the teams, which they not only need, but which also gives them a professional look and improves their level of confidence,” said Ndaba.

communities and the youth who are the building blocks of those communities.
