How the Boland keeps the cold at bay
Kayamandi songbird off to Italy
GERRIT SCHAAFSMA
Confi Tobo (16) has had a passion for singing since she was nine years old. Now, thanks to support from the Cape Winelands District Municipality, she is on her way to Italy with 34 of fellow pupils and choir members from Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof.
It has been an icy winter this year here in the Boland. Eskom’s threat of load-shedding is felt more acutely now than at any other time of the year. In a bid to avoid scheduled power outages, Eskom provided the following suggestions on keeping warm and saving electricity in the winter months. ) Buy an electric blanket. They’re the cheapest way of staying warm in bed – but be careful not to keep them on throughout the night. Simply turn them on for an hour or two just before bed to heat it up. An alternative is to use a hot water bot-
tle to stay warm. ) When heating up your house, only heat those rooms that are occupied – there is no reason to waste electricity on empty rooms ) Remember that heaters operate more efficiently in areas where ceilings are insulated and there are no gaps letting cold air into the house. ) Insulate your ceiling to help keep your house warm in winter and cool in summer. ) It is better (and cheaper) to dress warmly than to use a heater. Gazette ventured out on a bitterly cold and rainy day to find out from ordinary folks how they’re keeping warm this winter.

The choir will be taking part in the Cantat Choir Festival in Turin from 27 July to 5 August. Marijke Roos, the conductor of the choir, is full of praise for the young singer. “She has been in the choir since Grade 8, and really is an exceptional performer.” Confi’s trip to Italy will not be her first time abroad. She previously travelled to the USA with the Kuyasa Kids choir. Her impending trip is sponsored in part by a donation from the Mayor’s Benevolent Fund of the Cape Winelands District Municipality. The municipality’s Councillor Xiliswa Mdemka explains that the fund is meant for individuals from poor communities with special re-

money is allocated to the proper beneficiaries,” she adds, Confi is extremely excited to be going to Italy. “I just love singing, I feel like I can be myself.”
Skryf in vir Mej. Jamestown 2012 There is nothing better than a hot water bottle, say these ladies from the Birdcage coffee shop. Grace Zengeni (left) says she always wears a scarf to keep warm. Esther Ngubane (centre) also often wears a scarf, and loves taking a hot water bottle to bed. Letwine Samurine will pick a hot water bottle over anything else when the cold starts to bite.
See Singa is a gardener from Mozambique. His favourite winter warmer is his scarf.
Johannes de Kock often works outdoors, so he makes sure to keep extra warm. “In the mornings I put on two jerseys, a windbreaker, a scarf and a pair of gloves. At night I use a hot water bottle.”
JJ Thiart is a student at Stellenbosch University. “I really love my hoodie and my scarf,” he says. “I also wear thermal underpants when it is really cold.”

Community Keepers expands to Cloetesville Community Keepers, a Stellenbosch-based non-profit organisation that offers psychological and educational aid to pupils in need, has opened a new facility at Rietenbosch Primary School. The organisation started work at Lückhoff Secondary School in 2009, and soon after expanded to Ida’s Valley Primary School. The newest facility was opened on Monday last week by Willy Maliwa of the Western Cape Education Department. “We are very happy and proud to support this project,” he said, adding that he hoped it would be as successful in Cloetesville as it has been in Ida’s Valley.
Hughen Rodericks, a Stellenbosch University graduate, has been appointed as counsellor at the Rietenbosch Primary Community Keepers office. He will provide counselling and support to pupils, and refer them to an educational psychologist, social worker or dietician affiliated with the project if needed. Community Keepers executive director Philip Geldenhuys thanks Rietenbosch Primary principal Roy van Rooyen for his support, and Builders Express for the materials used to upgrade and furnish the Rietenbosch office. DOING IT FOR MADIBA: The Maties Football Club visited Kreefgat in Ida’s Valley on 18 July as part of the international Mandela Day Celebrations. The initiative to conduct coaching and fun activities in this area is a brainchild of the men’s first team, many of whom come from this and surrounding areas. They deemed it not only as their contribution towards the Mandela Day 76 minutes initiative, but also a chance to give something back to their local community. The day started off with a 45 minute coaching clinic and fun activities. This was followed by a 15 minute talk about the importance of the day, general challenges facing the kids as well as motivational talks on how to overcome them. Then 7 minutes were spent on handing out snack packs to the kids. The club has now undertaken to do this on an annual basis, with many similar areas that players call home, being visited. Here are some of the local kids voicing their support of the initiative and singing Happy Birthday Madiba! Photo: supplied
