was.

Mayor supports condemnation of protests
The reason for the recent illegal protests in a section of Kayamandi is purportedly given to the media as “the level of service delivery”.
According to municipal spokesperson, Vernon Bowers, the municipality strongly denies this as it delivers service to the best of its capacity under difficult circumstances and is in engagement with the entire community of Kayamandi around solutions for the many developmental challenges in that precinct. Mayor Conrad Sidego has since, however, supported the Kayamandi community’s condemnation of the illegal protest action by factions from the Enkanini informal settlement bordering on the Plankenbrug area. This comes after the municipality has been involved in talks with specific factions to resolve service delivery needs for the last 18 months. Sidego expressed his regret at the inconvenience caused by the disruption of water and electricity supplies to Kayamandi and the adjacent Plankenbrug industrial area.
“Certain factions within the Enkanini community of Kayamandi took to the streets, burning and vandalising council and private property in Kayamandi and R304, the Kayamandi Corridor, the Onder-Papegaaiberg high site, the pump station supplying water to Kayamandi and business premises in the Plankenbrug area,” he said. Sidego, accompanied by the head and acting manager of Law Enforcement, performed an all-round inspection of the affected area in Kayamandi and surrounds at 20:00 on Saturday 17 November. At that stage the situation was under control . Municipal law enforcement personnel remained on duty in the area until midnight on Sunday 18 November, while SAPS continued patrolling the area. According to Bowers the municipality, in partnership with the community, formed the Kayamandi Development Forum early in 2012. This was done in an effort to address the needs of the people of Enkanini. In August this year, the municipality conducted an enumeration study which helped to determine the

number of households and the scope of the need for electricity and other basic services in Enkanini. These and other issues are discussed at the Kayamandi Development Forum meetings. “The municipality has also secured funding from the provincial government of the Western Cape to upgrade the toilet facilities in Enkanini by 2012. The enumeration survey was important to help us quantify the exact sanitation needs of the people of Enkanini. “The municipality, together with Stellenbosch University, has explored the possibility of using renewable energy provision such as solar power. The municipality, together with members of the Kayamandi Development Forum, who has representatives from Enkanini, visited George Municipality in July this year to investigate similar projects and the feasibility of such a project. “It is therefore with immense regret that the municipality notes the acts of violence and damage to property that took place over the past few days. This happened despite concert-

PHOTO: ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN ed and ongoing efforts from the municipality to engage the residents of Enkanini. Importantly, the Kayamandi Development Forum has condemned these acts of lawlessness and distanced itself from the looting and burning,” said Bowers. According to Sidego, however, it is important that the municipality commits to working with the ward councillors and legitimate community structures in determining the way forward for Enkanini. “We can-
not continue providing services and ignore the havoc and devastation caused by a handful of people from Enkanini who deliberately destroy and damage what is being provided. “Our rights, as guaranteed by the Constitution, are not limitless and there is also an onus on all our communities to act within the law and not to destroy the very things that can improve the quality of our lives and that provide job opportunities,” Sidego added.
Protect yourself against crime The economic downturn has had an adverse effect on crime rates around the country. The South African Police Service and many security organisations have reported an escalation in criminal activity, including robberies, hijackings and petty theft. Stellenbosch too, is experiencing an increase in burglaries, robberies in residential areas and theft. Leading fire and security organisation, Chubb Fire and Security South Africa, offers some tips to help residents protect themselves from a crime. Chubb has the following advice to protect you and your family from crime: ) Be aware that you could be a victim at any time. ) Try not to go out alone late at night. If this is not possible, stay in well-lit, busy areas. ) Make sure your perimeter gate is securely closed before leaving home. ) When returning home, be vigilant and be aware of your surroundings. ) If you feel you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station. ) Do not park in dark, unattended areas. ) Stay alert and pay attention to your surroundings.

World Aids Day Gala concert Spanish potato omelette
The 8th Annual World Aids Day Gala Concert will be held at the Artscape Opera House on Saturday 1 December at 20:00.
The concert is presented by The Africa Centre for HIV and AIDS Management at Stellenbosch University, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). It also acknowledges the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children which takes place every year from 25 November to 10 December. “HIV and AIDS still remains a formidable challenge in our country and around the world. At the Africa Centre we continue to inspire our fellow countrymen and this year our star studded event is honoured to have the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) playing classic favourites conducted by Mario Verster,” says Prof Jan du Toit, the director of the centre. The director and producer of the gala concert, Jimmie Earl Perry, will share the stage with the talents of two South African, international opera divas, Golda Schultz and Janelle Visagie. Fourteen-year-old Stellenbosch High School student, Roné Roux, will debut with one of her original compositions with the CPO and a special guest vocalist, Nurlaila Karim from the Netherlands, will also make an appearance. New Apostolic Church Cape Choir, Ricardo de
Ruiter, Amy Campbell and Spha Mdlalose, will add their voices to this annual celebration and the Cape Dance Company (Debbie Turner) will grace the stage with one of their original pieces. Additional musicians include Andrew Ford (piano), Romy Brauseth (bass), Barry Van Zyl (drums) and Aldert du Toit (guitar). The evening will be hosted by international motivational speaker and illusionist, Wolfgang Riebe. Bunmi Makinwa, director of the Africa regional office of UNFPA, describes the gala concert as a non-threatening way of getting their message on HIV to specialised audiences. “UNFPA believes it is the collective efforts of different publics that will help humanity end AIDS. It is also important for young people to continue to receive the comprehensive sexuality education they need to become a truly HIV-free generation.” The World Aids Day Gala Concert has been held since 2005. According to the UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador to South Africa, Jimmie Earl Perry, the impressive programme of classical, pop, adult contemporary music will be a joyous celebration honouring unsung heroes, individuals and organizations for their tireless work and dedication to these causes. It is a formal occasion with a touch of red. Tickets are R80 or R120 from Computicket. For more information call Bianca on 021 808 3006 / 3707.

BIBC announces builders’ annual leave dates The Building Industry Bargaining Council (Cape of Good Hope) (BIBC) has confirmed that the annual builders’ holidays for this year will run from close of business on 14 December 2012 and the industry will reopen Monday 14 January 2013. The builders’ annual leave is traditionally three weeks and is legislated as part of the BIBC’s collective agreement. This year, however, the Council negotiated an additional unpaid leave day since the start of the working period would have fallen on a Friday if they had not done so. For a full explanation of the leave days, visit www.bibc.co.za, choose “News” from the left menu, and open “BIBC Holiday Period 2012” and “201209 ER Circular”.
The building industry shutdown period is determined by the council not later than 30 June each year. An employee may agree with his/ her employer to work during the annual leave period and shall be paid the basic wage paid for any time worked during such period, whilst security guards and other employees who work during the annual leave period shall, by agreement with their employers, be granted leave equal to the period worked during annual shutdown. The council has once again issued a reminder for persons wanting to build to ensure that the contractor is duly registered and compliant with the BIBC. This can be done by visiting the council’s website www.bibc.co.za or calling their offices on 021 950 7400.
SPECIAL DAY: It was a very proud day at the BMT bike shop as two of its star mechanics, Thando Nthithi and Bongani Bhusakwe, were presented with their new Specialized mountain bikes. These two young men are a symbol of what is right in our country and how hard work and perseverance deserves to be rewarded. Both have had to endure extreme hardships and instead of surrendering to mediocrity they have become trained and skilled mechanics. Thando has recently received additional training at the Specialized Bicycle Company University and will continue to develop his skills. Bongani is an upcoming MTB racer, who is making inroads on the local MTB racing scene.
