Drug company warns of phoney headache pills Counterfeit headache powders may be circulating in the South African market, consumers have been warned. Retailers have been notified, and people are being warned not to buy or use the counterfeit pain-relief medication, sold as “Grandpa Powders 38-count” and bearing the batch numbers 309339 and 314020. GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), which manufactures the headache powder, is recalling all products – real or not – bearing these batch numbers to ensure the counterfeit medication cannot reach the public. The company is urging people who have bought Grandpa headache powder to check the batch number – and other details – on the box.
The bogus medication can be identified by the two mentioned batch numbers, as well as a number of spelling errors in the wording on the side panel of the box. Chemical analysis is underway in GSK laboratories in the United Kingdom to determine the contents of the counterfeit products. Consumers should: ) check the batch number of Grandpa Powders 38-count for batch number 309339 or 314020; ) look for spelling mistakes on the box; ) immediately stop using any Grandpa headache medication whose box bears the affected batch numbers. Contact the GSK consumer care line on 0800 118 274 for more information.

My ouers was streng en ek was stout. Ek sien myself as ’n leier.
) Is jy op jou senuwees? Nee. ) Wat sê jou familie en vriende hiervan? Hulle ondersteun my.

Core values for town Last week Stellenbosch Municipality started training its staff as part of the Valley of Character project. At the launch of the project in June, mayor Conrad Sidego explained that the project’s aim was to “enhance the core values of the municipality and the community.” He was enthusiastic about the potential of the project to impact the town positively. “Stellenbosch is a community of possibilities, where one can embody and live a vision of a town that is driven by values,” he said. The values that the municipality are promoting are integrity, responsibility, respect, innovation and excellence. Eikestadnuus decided to find out from the inhabitants of the town which values they consider to be the most important when dealing with their fellow citizens.
Jackie Strydom: “We need to take everybody into account when we do things. It is important to be considerate of other people’s needs.”
George and Sarie Feiles: “I like it when people are enthusiastic,” says George. “I also think honesty is very important, because when people act honestly, good things always come of it.” His wife Sarie agrees. “People should be hardworking and honest, then there won’t be any problems,” she says.
Albert Venter: “Friendliness has always been very important to me. Sometimes you can improve someone’s day simply by being friendly. I try and treat other people in the same way that I would like to be treated.”
Kwenele Chomco and Chris Edyegu: “Respect and acting in the spirit of Ubuntu is very important to me says,” Chomco. “I think tolerance is a key value when dealing with people, especially those from other cultures or who have different ideas about sexuality. Even if you don’t agree with a person’s beliefs, you should try and be tolerant and create a workable environment,” says Edyegu.
Cameron Appollis: “People must act humanely, a core value for me. All other values are derived from it. Honestly is also very important. People need to be honest with others and with themselves.”

AWSS needs your help The Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch (AWSS) urgently requires the assistance of the community to complete a quarantine facility for its cattery. The construction of the facility started in March, but the job could not be completed. The AWSS has been left with the roofless skeleton of the building for the past few months. The facility should comprise a 24 m² room with 12 short-term holding cages. Such a facility is used to
monitor the health of new arrivals before they are transferred to the cattery proper. The AWSS currently needs about R40 000 to complete the facility. Donations of services or materials and cages would also be very welcome. Contact Elmarie Immelman (cattery manager) on 0 083 692 9549 or at 2 aws-cats@metroweb.co.z, or Nicci Collins (shelter manager) on 0 083 573 6720 or 021 883 9129, or via email at 2 animalws@telkomsa.net.

Simayile and Madolo enjoyed Transalp THE winners of the inaugural Exxaro Development Jersey at the 2012 Absa Cape Epic, from the Exxaro Academy, Azukile Simayile and Siphosenkosi Madolo, arrived back from Germany after successfully competing in this year’s 8-day TransAlp, which took place from 14 to 21 July. The opportunity to participate in the TransAlp was the riders’ prize for winning the Exxaro Jersey at this year’s Absa Cape Epic and their first trip overseas. “The highlights of the TransAlp were definitely the climbs, the beauty of the mountains and to be riding in the snow,” says Azukile Simayile (18). His team mate Siphosenkosi Madolo (21) added that the biggest challenge was the long climbs. “It was just a never ending story!”
They found the race easier than anticipated. “The Absa Cape Epic is much more challenging than the TransAlp. It’s also better organised and we felt more part of a community at the Cape Epic. Also, the level of competition is higher on the Cape Epic than the TransAlp,” says Simayile. With regards to their preparations for next year’s Absa Cape Epic, both riders feel that the experience will help them. Adds Madolo: “There were some very long climbs, which will definitely help us to climb better next year!” Their best result for the week was to finish in 48th place in a time of 2 hours 50 minutes during one of the stages. Simayile reckons stage 5 was the best: “It had the most beautiful single track and
we made up lots of time on the other teams on the downhill. Generally, the route was beautiful, with lots of long climbs and most of them were on tarred roads, around 80%, which of course made it a bit easier.” Both Simayile and Madolo were extremely grateful for this enormous opportunity. Says Madolo: “It has been a great honour to be here and it was a fantastic experience for us to come and do this race. Thank you very much to all the people who made this possible.” Simayile concludes: “Thank you very much to all the other riders for their support. There were lots of South Africans at the event and they were very friendly and supportive.”
