Veggies for Kylemore
The Kylemore Children’s Organic Gardening Project was recently launched at Kylemore High School. The aim is to grow organic vegetables, fill soup pots and sell whatever they grow to insure that the project will be sustainable and generate a small income for the school. DARK MONDAY: The pupils of Kayamandi High School had to start their exams an hour late on Monday – the school’s electricity had been cut off, and it was too dark for them to start writing at 08:00 as planned. This follows a spree of electricity theft from the school’s power supply point, causing the electricity to fluctuate and putting the school in danger. The electricity was cut off as a safety measure, but the power failure posed a number of problems for the school. Teachers were unable to make copies of exam papers, and practical exams had to be postponed. The school was also hit by burglars over the weekend as the alarm had been of order. New bases for TB troops STELLENBOSCH University’s Desmond Tutu TB Centre has bolstered the battle against tuberculosis by donating site offices to clinics in Kayamandi locally and Mbekweni in Paarl. The donation formed part of the centre’s goal of lowering the high rate of TB in communities in the Western Cape. The offices, on the grounds of the Kayamandi and Mbekweni clinics, had been used by the Desmond Tutu TB Centre during its Zambia–South Africa TB and Aids Reduction (Zamstar) study, which investigated the prevalence of TB and sought ways to fight it. Desmond Tutu TB Centre director Professor Nulda Beyers, with her colleague Dr Shahra Sattar, reported back on the Zamstar research results to healthcare workers, school principals and members of the community at a recent meeting at TC Newman Clinic in Paarl. The study looked at 24 communities in Zambia and 8 in the Western Cape, including Kayamandi and Mbekweni. It showed that the incidence of TB was four times as high in these Western Cape communities as in the Zambian communities. “We are a wealthier country than Zambia and have lower HIV rates. Yet TB is far worse here. We need to do more – each and every one of us,” says Beyers. She says research seems to show that people aren’t going to the clinics

Common symptoms of TB include coughing for more than two weeks, night sweats and weight loss. During the Zamstar research, children in Grades 1 to 3 at schools in Kayamandi and Mbekweni were given skin tests and monitored closely. Results showed that one in every five of these children had already been infected with TB.
During the Zamstar study, research assistants such as Jongi Ndlebe from Kayamandi went door to door to talk to people about the symptoms of TB. Ndlebe says it was worrying to see how many people in Kayamandi had TB. On the other hand, he adds, it was very rewarding to see people get the medication and treatment that could save their lives. “TB treatment is free at clinics,” he points out. “People need to know about it and get help.”

LEAGUES AHEAD: The Maties women’s soccer team last week finished the 2011–2012 Safa Cape Winelands ABSA Division summer season as regional league champions, top scorers, and the only unbeaten team in the division. In 20 matches played from mid-October until late May, Maties won 19 and drew just once (1–1 against local rivals Nietvoorbij in the first game of the season), scoring 159 goals and conceding just seven. This saw Maties finish the season more than 100 goals ahead of the team in second place on the log.
‘Trackmaster’ returns, sweeps medals SOYISO MALITI An Ida’s Valley track runner snapped up three medals at the 36th Masters and African Masters Athletics Championships in Pretoria. Achmat Solomons’ medals include a gold, a silver and a bronze. Solomons (52) also helped the Boland relay team claim bronze at the championships. Representing Boland, he won first place in the 400 m after clocking 56,48 seconds, while he snatched second place in the 200 m with a blistering time of 25,12 seconds. The “Trackmaster”, as he’s affectionately referred to, runs for the Stellenbosch Athletics Club. He missed out on last year’s world championships, held in Durban, owing to an injury he sustained beforehand. Solomons is now looking to qualify for next year’s World Masters Championships, which will be hosted in Brazil. “I hope to avoid injury this time around,” Solomons says. “It’s my passion, and I enjoy athletics. I want to prove to myself that I can be a world-beater. It’s always been my dream to be a successful athlete – since I was a child.” He says there is no better way to stake his claim than in these championships. Solomons is also set to compete at the championships in Oudtshoorn in October. Oudtshoorn is his fortress; he holds the record in the 200 m track event there with 24,4 seconds.
