Beware of theft out of motor vehicles
The Stellenbosch branch of the South African Police Service (SAPS) has warned residents of the high number of cases of theft out of motor vehicles. “We are experiencing theft out of motor vehicles on a daily basis. People leave their personal possessions such as laptops, i-pads, cameras and cellphones on the seat of their vehicle when leaving the vehicle parked and unattended. “These items can be seen through the win-
dow of the car and potential thieves see it as an opportunity to steel. In most cases windows of the cars are broken to gain access to the vehicle and to take possession of the goods seen in the car. “We urge the public to be aware of the problem we are experiencing and ask people when parking their vehicles to rather take out their personal belongings and prevent themselves from becoming a victim of crime,” lieutenant Natalie Martin, SAPS spokesperson said.

Lesers gesels met skrywers by WOW RAYMOND WILLEMSE
My pa het vir my baie boeke gegee
Dit is ’n goeie ding as leerders wil lees.”

Understanding TB Do you know all you need to know about Tuberculosis (TB)? March is TB Awareness Month and ER24 is urging people to familiarise themselves with the symptoms of the disease. Seek medical attention immediately if it is suspected that you have developed TB. TB is an infectious disease that spreads through the air. It is caused by a bacterium called mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is spread when someone who has active tuberculosis coughs, sneezes or spits. The bacterium is then inhaled by another person. Symptoms include cough, fever, night sweats, weight and appetite loss, tiredness, weakness, chest pain and coughing up blood. High risk Speaking about healthcare workers, Dr Vernon Wessels, from ER24 said: “Unfortunately they are by the nature of their work, at a higher risk of sustaining many infections, including TB, than the rest of the population. This is due to them attending to patients with undiagnosed and untreated infections. “Any person, including trauma cases, could potentially have untreated TB. If you were inadvertently exposed, it is important to take note of any symptoms that may appear, go for testing and have treatment started as soon as possible.” Healthcare workers should ensure they wear the relevant mask when treating patients. Masks “Healthcare workers are trained to use universal precautions such as gloves and an N95 mask on any patient suspected of having a respiratory infection,” said Wessels. He added it is standard practice for healthcare workers to wear an N95 or FFP2 mask when treating TB patients, especially if the patient’s response to treatment is unknown. “If the patient does not require oxygen therapy, it is practical for the patient to wear an N95 mask when in close contact with people while still infectious as this contains the TB germ and prevents spread to other people. It should be noted that some N95 masks are fitted with an expiration valve to make it more comfortable for wearers as a person does not have to exhale through the filter material. This type of mask would however not work if a TB patient wears it as their expired air with the TB germs would exit through the valve and into the atmosphere,” said Wessels. If untreated TB is suspected, the patient should be approached with an N95 mask and preferably taken to an area where they will not be in close contact with other people. Caroline Walker, the Advocacy, communication and social mobilisation coordinator at the TB/HIV Care Association, said: “If your immune system is strong enough, you can inhale the TB germ but remain healthy. Many people have latent TB. They have the TB germ
but their immune system protects them from its spread. Latent TB is not infectious. There is a 10%risk of developing active TB if you have latent TB. If your immune system is not strong enough, you can develop active TB,” said Walker. TB usually affects the lungs however it can affect other parts of the body. People who are HIV positive, diabetic, malnourished or smokers have a higher chance of developing TB. “The HIV virus weakens the immune system. This means it is more difficult for the body to fight off the TB germs and active TB disease develops. The most common cause of death for HIV positive adults in South Africa is TB. The high coinfection of TB and HIV in South Africa is the reason TB/HIV Care Association works on integrating TB and HIV services,” Walker said. Even though co-infection is high in South Africa, this does not mean that everyone with TB is HIV positive or that everyone who is HIV positive has TB. It is possible to have one disease without the other. TB/HIV Care Association works to prevent, find and treat TB and HIV in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape. “We take services to people instead of waiting for them to access care at clinics. We make it easier for people to stay in care by providing support for them to take treatment at their homes or workplaces. This is done through community care workers who form a link between the clinic and the patient, visiting the patient at home, explaining their medication and reminding them of their clinic appointments. Our mobile teams provide screening for TB and HIV counselling and testing in community settings,” said Walker. She urged people diagnosed with TB to take their medication as prescribed by their doctor or nurse until their treatment is completed. “For the first two weeks of treatment they should avoid close contact with others. After the first two weeks of taking treatment, a person should no longer be infectious. TB patients must continue taking their tablets until the treatment is completed.” TB is more likely to be spread in small, poorly ventilated and overcrowded conditions. “This means everyone should open windows when on a train, bus or taxi for example to allow for ventilation. “Coughing etiquette should be observed. People should turn away from others and cough into their arm rather than their hand to avoid coughing germs into the air. If you spit, you should do so into a tissue and then throw the tissue away,” said Walker. She added that kissing, shaking hands, sharing food and cutlery or touching bed linen or toilet seats, do not spread TB. To become infected, a person has to inhale TB germs. ER24’s Emergency Contact Centre can be reached 24 hours a day on 084 124 for any medical emergency.

Blakes hou weer Paasnaweekrugbytoernooi

Head injuries – You are at risk
Did you know that head injury is one of the most common causes of death in transport-related incidents? It is also a common cause of death among pedestrians who are knocked by vehicles. ER24 attends to patients who sustain head injuries during collisions on a daily basis. March 20 was World Head Injury Awareness Day and ER24 is urging people to use safety belts, refrain from speeding and driving recklessly, to use child car seats and be alert while on the road. This will assist in limiting the likelihood and impact of head injuries. Speaking about all road users, Dr Vernon Wessels, from ER24, said, “As with most injuries, prevention is better than cure. The best way to reduce head injuries is to try and avoid the impact in the first place. “Where potential impact is unavoidable, wear the appropriate headgear. Use the appropriate restraint in vehicles. Using a car seat for children that is correctly fitted protects them from injury. It also protects other occupants from being hit by an unrestrained child in the event of a collision.”
People must seek medical attention if a head injury leads to loss of consciousness or coordination, visual disturbances and loss in memory, no matter how short the effects may have been. “Life-threatening brain injuries can initially present very subtle and a medical assessment will determine if further tests or admission for observation are required. Bleeding and swelling of the brain is potentially treatable with good outcomes if done before serious complications occur. “The most catastrophic event is a missed bleed inside the skull cavity that can cause severe disability or death. “There are, however, subtle effects that can present at a later stage, such as personality changes, coordination problems, speech difficulty and memory and concentration problems,” said Wessels. Children Wessels said in a perfect world, any head injury should be assessed by a health professional, however we also need to be realistic. “Children will sustain minor head injuries mainly due to the relatively
large size of the head during early childhood and immature motor skills. “However, there are certain signs that can be used to determine when a medical consultation is appropriate. “These include any loss of consciousness no matter how brief, convulsions after the injury, vomiting, a headache that worsens or does not improve with rest or oral paracetamol and any visual disturbances or behaviour that is not typical for the child. If there is any doubt, rather consult a doctor,” said Wessels. Understanding head injuries Wessels said head injuries could range from simple lacerations to devastating bleeding inside the skull cavity that causes pressure on the brain. This pressure can cause death if the patient is not urgently treated. “Although injuries involving the skull cavity are usually the most catastrophic, external head injuries can also cause permanent damage or death especially if the airway or major blood vessels are affected,” he said. Types of head injuries include
concussion, contusion and skull fractures. Concussion A concussion is the most common type of head injury. A concussion results when the brain undergoes impact that shakes the brain tissue but does not cause bleeding or visible damage to the cells. “A patient may lose consciousness for a short while and is often confused, disorientated or has poor co-ordination. However, the effects return to near normal fairly quickly. “Some functions like short-term memory may take much longer to recover and headaches and dizzy spells can last for months after a concussion episode. By repeating questionnaire tests over a period of time, doctors are able to track the recovery process. Although the brain cells do not appear abnormal (a CAT scan will be normal), the functioning of the cells are affected and a repeat impact could have a more serious result,” said Wessels. Usually, a concussion is sustained through impact to the head, however indirect force can also cause this. A sad example of bleeding that can occur in the brain of a child is
through violent shaking as typically occurs in abuse scenarios. Contusion With contusion, the brain tissue is bruised by the impact and this can cause swelling. As the brain is inside a bony cavity that cannot expand, pressure will build up due to the swelling. This prevents adequate blood supply to the brain, which suppresses its functioning and can cause permanent damage to the cells and potentially lead to death. The same result occurs when there is a bleed inside the skull cavity. Skull fracture With a skull fracture there is a risk of bony fragments causing direct damage to the underlying brain tissue. In addition, skull fractures are often associated with a wound of the overlying skin that then causes a pathway for germs to travel from outside into the skull cavity and cause infection of the brain (encephalitis) or the membranes covering the brain (meningitis). This infection can be life threatening or cause permanent disability. ER24’s Emergency Contact Centre can be reached on 0 084 124.

Make your own luck in your business DAVID MALHERBE
Somehow many people have the desire to be lucky in some way or another. That is why many people regularly buy Lotto tickets. “If I can only win the Lotto, then all my problems will be solved.” But that does not seem to be true. I recently read in the You magazine about a man who won R100m in the Lotto, spent it all within two years and now says he wishes that he never won it, because it brought him no luck, rather the contrary.

According to articles on Entrepreneur.com, it seems that the roll-of-the-dice kind of luck does not exactly work in business, rather the make-your-own kind of luck. Much emphasis is placed on the importance of preparation. People say that luck is when opportunity meets preparation. Adam Toren says we need to be prepared in three ways. First, we need to always be ready for an opportunity when it comes our way by having business cards available, to sell ourselves or our business’ products or services and by always looking our best. Secondly, be prepared to ask for an oppor-

An estimated 55 000 spectators flocked to the Green Point Fan Walk on Saturday 14 March to salute 600 firemen and celebrate cultural diversity with more than 2 000 performers in the city’s 6th annual Cape Town Carnival. One of the evening’s highlights were the performers from the Cape Whalers Field Band from Stellenbosch who wowed the crowd along the 1,2 km Fan Walk, along with more than 50 community groups, who showcased their interpretation of the elemental theme of fire, water, air and earth – the unstoppable forces that shape us and our environment as part of the procession. Spectators, who dressed up in carnival paraphernalia including masks, feathers, glow sticks and festive hats, were in awe of the mesmerising spectacle on display.

Cricket SA deems first Varsity Cricket season a success The first season of Varsity Cricket is all done and dusted and the organisers are happy with the outcome of this first event. The tournament took place in Potchefstroom from 3-8 February and Tuks were crowned champions after losing just one of their nine matches. Tuks will go on to represent
South Africa at the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals in India later this year, a tournament they won last year. The tournament drew impressive crowds in its inaugural season, with up to 1 500 people attending each day. It was backed by Cricket South Africa (CSA) and offered valuable experience for a number of
local players, according to CSA’s Youth and Tertiary development manager, Niels Momberg. “For the cricketers who were not offered professional contracts, these tournaments are a way to prove themselves on a big stage. This adds to competitiveness and creates more chances for players to make a career out of playing crick-
et,” says Momberg. Competitive cricket at university level presents players with the opportunity to prepare for what awaits them at franchise level. “Playing under lights and in front of big crowds all add to the excitement and help build an atmosphere, which helps prepare players for what might await them when
they go on to make it to franchise level,” Momberg explains. “The inaugural Varsity Cricket tournament was a great success. It again underscored the importance of having a high standard of intervarsity competitions, which offers exposure and experience to the students,” said Duitser Bosman, Varsity Sports CEO.
