A vegetation fire broke out on Sunday 25 January at 10:00 at Steenbras River, just alongside the N2. “A vehicle broke down and caught alight. The packing at the bottom of the bonnet had caught alight and they (the occupants of the car) ripped it out and threw it on the grass,” said Theo Layne, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s fire department, to explain the cause of the fire. “We had two helicopters water bombing and 67 fire fighters on the scene.” The fire was extinguished at 16:00. Sebastian Beaumont from Beaumont Wine Estate in Bot River says 2015 is looking great so far. “A cool winter – not as cold as the 2014 season – resulted in earlier budding and flowering and at this stage seems like we will have an earlier harvest.” Beaumont says spring conditions were good with the only damage coming from a little hail storm that hit some of the vineyards, but this only had a minor impact. “Otherwise good conditions have resulted in healthy grapes so far. We must just not get too much heat now. That’s pretty much all I can say until we start to pick.” He said they are scrubbing the cellar and getting wines ready for bottling. “This time is when winemakers experience what must be something like prenatal angst. We are strung out as we are about to give birth to the new season’s wines – exciting and stressful at the same time.” Niels Verburg, owner of Luddite, says due to the very dry weather in November, December and January the harvest seems to be earlier by about two weeks. “The bonus with such dry weather is that there is little chance of rot or disease, so the quality should be good. “I think Luddite will start with Chenin Blanc in two weeks’ time and Shiraz in mid-Febuary.” Verburg says it will be a short,

sharp vintage as the grapes will ripen fast once the normal February heat sets in. The ever witty Braam Gericke of Wildekrans said 2015 arrived, made itself comfortable and kicked 2014 to the curb. He says 2015 with its showoff attitude however, brought something quite spectacular with it – excellent fruit. Gericke says everything has fallen into place and with ample water on the farm, the dams were seen as the gold pots at the end of the rainbow and him the leprechaun guarding this. “My vine children are very happy and every time I drive through I whisper to them, just like a young kid on Christmas morning. Gericke says with a shorter winter but adequate cold units they had a good, even budding period. “The higher soil temperatures surprised the vines and signs of earlier budding were present.” He says the smaller berries will lead to more intense wines. “Whites will most probably be a bit earlier and with a gap for our ‘oh so overworked’ winemakers. “Reds may be in the cellar a little later, a week or two after the bulk of whites – but all in all this will go down as one of the better ones in the wine industry if you ask me.” Conrad Schutte, a consultant at Vinpro, says it’s a good season with very low disease pressure throughout the growing season. In terms of quality he is very positive and says they are looking forward to a quality harvest. “The indications are that the early ripening varieties would give us a really good yield and good production.”
