House, business burglaries on the increase “These are professionals. And I suspect they are the same people.” So says Johno du Plessis, a resident of Human Road who is one of many who suffered housebreakings recently. The Gazette reported about the increase in housebreakings last week and Capt. Gerrit Botes, spokesperson for the Caledon Police confirmed house and business burglaries showed an increase in January and February compared to last year. Du Plessis was burgled at 02:00 in

the morning on 22 November last year and again on 9 February this year at 05:00 in the morning. “Two computers were stolen, a hard drive and this time they also took the printer,” says David, Johno’s brother. “But it’s the inconvenience of having to replace all the stolen items and the loss of content that’s truly problematic.” He says what bothers him most, is having to lock up and set alarms. terrent and will not offer an easy escape route to criminals. There have been 15 burglaries since December,” says Andrade. Andrew Buck from Trust Security said security should be a priority. “We’ve experienced no increase in housebreaking during the past month. We want to warn residents however to be vigilant and alert and not to open the door to strangers.” Capt. Botes confirmed that there were 16 housebreakings during February. He urges residents to be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles and people. He says they will continue with awareness campaigns throughout the Theewaterskloof region in an ongoing effort to curb crime.
