PATRON’S REPORT Mr. John Khoury

Dear CBDRLRA members, As you know the Bulldogs have had a long and proud association with your wonderful association. Together, we have served our local community through our special junior league competition and your CBDRLRA members. This has helped unite so many diverse cultures, religions, and backgrounds. As we work towards ensuring a successful season ahead, you should be proud of the role that you are playing in developing the sport within the Bulldogs local community. We always say that the Bulldogs are more than just an NRL team. They are a club that represents much more across our wonderful and diverse local community. Collectively, we are paving a way for young athletes in our district to follow their dreams and aspirations. Part of this is to improve and invest in our local grassroots communities, including our junior rugby league programs. We also need to provide continual support and encouragement to create an environment for ongoing and sustained success, on and off the field. Whilst the last few years have been challenging regarding our results, the club has responded quickly to create the right environment for 2022, and beyond. We have decided to return to being a ‘Development’ club once again, with a focus on establishing a system that best gives players from the Junior League the opportunity to move into the Bulldogs Junior Development Program. 4

CBDRLRA Inc. 100th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2021

As part of our promise to return to traditional Bulldogs’ values, we decided that it was vital that we ran our own NSW Cup side next season. This will allow our players to train at Belmore and run out in the blue and white of the Bulldogs. In addition to that, we will continue to support the Mounties side in 2022, through the provision of players. On the playing front we have made some outstanding signings that we believe will make a major impact for us on the field. Players of the calibre of Josh Addo-Carr, Matt Burton, Tevita Pangai Junior, Paul Vaughan, Brent Naden, Matt Dufty and Josh Cook will complement our current 2022 squad, as we look forward to seeing what our ‘new look’ side can achieve. Additionally, we are pleased to have signed Viliame Kikau and Reed Mahoney for season 2023. We have also been extremely active in the community, with the firstever partnership between the Bulldogs and the Community Care Kitchens, which has seen former player Hazem El Masri lead the program and help deliver over 200 fresh meals per week to those people experiencing difficulties during the lockdown period. In addition, the creation of the ‘Bulldogs by your Side’ program has allowed local primary school students to have ‘zoom’ calls with players from our current NRL squad. On top of each of these programs has been the Vaccination Hub at Belmore, that has seen hundreds of members of the local community receive vaccinations in a ‘drive through’ system, while we thought that it was important to show our support and appreciation for all Healthcare workers by having a ‘Thank You – Healthcare Workers’ message on the sleeve of our NRL jerseys throughout the second half of last season. In these challenging times it was great to see so many groups work together to care about those in need.

CBDRLRA Inc. 100th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2021

On the Sponsorship front, the Club has been busy in recent months renewing and welcoming new sponsors to the Bulldogs, with Ultimate Security (Back of Jersey), CPe (Back of Shorts), CG Air Conditioning (right - Back of Shorts), Sydney Tools (Bulldogs Official Tool Supplier), Accolade Wines (Official Wine Partner) and ELMO Software (Official HR and Payroll Partner), all committing to the club, with further announcements to follow in the coming months. In other great news, our recently launched ‘Bulldogs Business Club’ is on track to double in size, less than 12 months after being formed. Our 2022 draw is also now out, and we can look forward to some great matchups. Some of the key dates to look forward to are our return to Belmore in Round 12 to take on the Dragons, plus a new look Queen’s Birthday fixture against the Eels, where we will look to create a ‘local derby’ occasion on the Public Holiday. We will also take a match to Bundaberg for the first time in an initiative that will include community visits and school clinics as part of an overall drive to promote the game. It is an exciting time to be a Bulldogs fan and to be part of what we believe is a ‘new beginning’. It has been a tough 12 months for everyone and not being able to go to the football has been a major part of that. I know that everyone here at the Bulldogs is looking forward to the upcoming season with a real sense of excitement and optimism. I look forward to seeing you all soon.

PATRON’S REPORT Mr. George Coorey

I trust everyone has been able to enjoy a pleasant Christmas and New Year after what has been another particularly challenging year. Congratulations to the Association on your centenary season in 2021. It is a phenomenal achievement to have been fostering and nurturing the development of referees to serve the great game of rugby league for 100 years. I know that I say it every year, but it really does bear repeating. Without the service of competent and qualified referees, the game would not be possible and for that we are grateful. After the challenges of 2020, we were certainly hopeful for what 2021 would deliver. Sadly, the second wave of the Covid19 pandemic proved even more devastating and impactful than the first. Our League Club was forced to close for 107 days, with the Sydney wide lockdown also halting all but the elite rugby league competitions. Let’s hope 2022 delivers us an incident free season as you embark upon the first of your next 100 years. I am honoured to have been a Patron of the Association in 2021 and am pleased to confirm that Canterbury League Club has recommitted our support as the Major Sponsor of the CBDRLRA for 2022. PRESIDENT’S FOREWORD Mr. Paul Archer

As an Association 2021 was both very rewarding and of course due to Covid very challenging. Let’s start with the positives from our Centenary year, our formal Gala Centenary dinner conducted in January was a wonderful event. I am confident that all attendees enjoyed the occasion and the venue at the William Inglis Hotel was first class. Although due to the pandemic our numbers needed to be limited to 180 members and special guests it was a night which befitted our milestone of reaching the century. The following members contributed with speeches of a very high calibre: Adam Gee, Peter Longhurst, Nathan Fayad, Matthew Gomes and Bob Garwood. The entertainment was fantastic with the highlight being comedian Tahir who had us all in fits of laughter, and let’s not forget Barry Ruttle’s shirtless performance! In all, our Gala dinner was an event to be remembered and I would like to acknowledge the input of the Centenary Committee in particular, Kim Archer who put in long hours to ensure the event was successful. Also, the History Committee of David Abood, assisted by Daniel Gardner and Colin Turnell should be commended on producing a wonderful publication to record the 100 Years of CBRA history, well done! Just prior to the commencement of the football season I was able to approach a prospective additional sponsor and following our sponsorship proposal and meeting with Michael Sleiman, First National Daystar Real Estate based in Revesby signed on for 2 years as naming sponsors for our two major functions and a new trophy for the Trainer of the Year. First National Daystar join our wonderful family of sponsors, long term (25 years) major sponsor Canterbury League Club, Soneta Plumbing, DeVel Pty Ltd, Bankstown RSL and Club Menangle, on behalf of all members I express our sincere appreciation to our sponsors for your ongoing support, you have all contributed to the success of our Association and our Centenary celebrations. I

am very pleased to advise that both DeVel and Bankstown RSL have renewed sponsorship for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Our next celebration for our Centenary year was the anniversary meeting held at the Canterbury League Club on Sunday 6th June, the exact date our Association was formed in 1922, an enjoyable event attended by 70 members and guests. One week later in the Paragon Room at Canterbury League Club we conducted our annual First National Daystar Blue and White dinner with 150 guests and the highlight being the presentation of Life Membership to Daniel Gardner and Nathan Loveday, both worthy recipients and inspirational speeches delivered by both. So, we were most fortunate to have had 3 major functions to celebrate 100 years and then, Covid again put Sydney and eventually the state in lockdown, community football was suspended and eventually cancelled for 2021, with no finals football a bitter disappointment for our active members and participants. We conducted regular zoom ruling and development sessions on Sunday nights, and I thank Brad Zarb for his contribution with this activity. Due to the disrupted season the Committee made the difficult decision for the second year that several awards would not be presented. The lockdown also meant no meetings and our scheduled final two major social events were cancelled being our First National Daystar Life Member’s Lunch and End of Centenary BBQ and the scheduled Training Camp was also postponed to February 2022. Eventually, we were able to conduct a final meeting night at Canterbury League in December where we presented the Leo Randle Trophy to Life Member, Barry Belford and the First National Daystar Trainer of the Year trophy to Jack McIlvenny, congratulations to both worthy recipients. Further, we rescheduled our final centenary celebration the First National Daystar Centenary BBQ for January 2022 with numbers limited to 80, a fantastic way to finalise Centenary celebrations, even if a little later than planned. I would like to acknowledge the support from the Canterbury League Club Directors under the direction of President, Peter Winchester, and the support from the Football Club under the leadership of John Khoury and Aaron

Warburton. To the Junior Bulldogs who also celebrated their Centenary in 2021 thank you for your partnership in assisting us to give the local district a safe and welcoming experience playing the greatest game of all. Finally, to the NSWRL and NSWRLRA we appreciate both your financial and administrative support. However, we must all strive to attempt to improve the recruitment and retention of referee’s, an area which needs a concerted effort to get numbers increased which can only benefit all participants. We need action now not words but action. To my fellow Committee members, thanks for your efforts. Secretary Daniel Gardner, whose passion and commitment to the welfare of the Association is first class. Daniel grows more comfortable in his vital role each season; we are in good hands with Daniel as our Secretary. All Office Bearers contribute each season in particular Kane Thorburn who performs several tasks and no request is ever denied and to our hard-working Social Secretary, Kim Archer I see first-hand the amount of time and effort Kim puts into the Association as well as putting up with me as I rant and rave. Thank you, Kim, you are my rock. Our Centenary year was celebrated in typical CBRA fashion, our foundation members would be so proud of the Association they formed in 1922, we have had 860 members, many who have progressed to great heights in their refereeing career but also our park referees, these are the backbone of our wonderful Association, they toil away each season for the love of the game and a passion for our wonderful Association, I am so proud to be the President in this our Centenary year and to lead an Association whose motto is “Integrity, Service and Friendship”. 100 years down and now time to commence the next stage in the journey of CBRA with new milestones and challenges ahead.

HON. SECRETARY’S REPORT Mr. Daniel Gardner

Mr Chairman and Members, After such a tumultuous 2020 season, there was collective high hopes for a much smoother 2021. In what was a major milestone for our Association, we had finally reached our 100th season – the Centenary of Canterbury Referees. The season started with a bang – 180 members and special guests attended a truly memorable Gala Dinner on Saturday 23rd January to officially kick off our Centenary celebrations. The night was filled with plenty of laughs, good times, and reminiscing. It was great to see current and past members mingling and trading stories about what it means to be a part of such a wonderful Association. In true Canterbury fashion, a select group of members and guests continued said stories over a glass of red in the garden pavilion until the early hours of Sunday morning, with the trackwork lights eventually sending people to bed! To the members on the Centenary Committee, in particular Paul & Kim Archer, I thank you all for your input in what was a great event. The whole night was meticulously planned, and the feedback received from special guests, sponsors and fellow associations was nothing but amazing. It would be remiss of me to not congratulate David Abood and Col Turnell, who along with some input from myself created a keepsake that I hope many members will cherish – the Centenary Book showcasing the first 100 seasons of Canterbury Referees. The hours that David personally contributed to ensure the high standard of the book is beyond belief. The final product is a wonderful publication and something he should be very proud of. I am sure Amanda is also happy to reclaim the lounge room floor now the photos and documents can be stored away again!

CBDRLRA Inc. 100th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2021

Following on from our Gala Dinner, a month later our AGM was held at the home of our Major Sponsor, Canterbury League Club, on Thursday 18th February 2021. Paul Archer was elected unopposed as President for his 6th consecutive season, and 19th overall. The members elected George Coorey, John Khoury and Aaron Warburton as Patrons for the 2021 season. All three gratefully accepted the role and supported our Association throughout another difficult season. All Committee positions remained the same as 2020, except for the active Committee Member, with Anthony Harb stepping down and Peter Chayna being voted in as his replacement. It was announced at the AGM that the Association would induct 2 Life Members in Season 2021, with myself and Nathan Loveday becoming the 88th and 89th Life Members respectively. It was a shock to hear my name announced at the AGM, and a great honour to receive my Life Member’s blazer at the Annual Blue & White Cabaret in front of my family and closest friends in June. I extend my congratulations to Nathan, who joined the Association not long after myself. We have shared plenty of enjoyable times and many memories throughout our tenure at CBRA and it was quite fitting to receive Life Membership on the same night. Nathan continues to give significant contribution to the Association since becoming a member in 2007. Sponsorship Season 2021 saw Canterbury League Club’s major sponsorship of our Association hit the quarter century, extending into its 25th year! Like many businesses, Canterbury League Club was hit hard by the COVID Lockdown throughout 2021, but still offered to support our Association and we are truly grateful for our relationship with such a wonderful club led by President Peter Winchester. Peter is an Honorary Member for Life our Association, and the League Club is in great hands with him at the helm. DeVel Pty Ltd entered their third season as ‘shorts sponsor’ of our Association, and we thank Geoff Dib and the team for all their support! It was most pleasing

14

CBDRLRA Inc. 100th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2021

to have DeVel confirm a 2-year extension to this sponsorship, with an agreement in place for the 2022 and 2023 seasons! Thank you once again Geoff. It was also exciting to announce Bankstown RSL had agreed to a 2-year extension as Flag Sponsor. We thank Scott Dickson, Andrew Bailey, and the team at Bankstown RSL for their continued support and hospitality. We look forward to being able to award the ‘Bankstown RSL Touch Judge of The Year’ Award next season, after an unfortunate 2-year hiatus due to COVID. Thanks to Steve Dib and the team at SONETA Plumbing and Civil who signed on late last year as our ‘sleeve sponsor’ and it was exciting to be able to reveal our new on-field jerseys at our Gala Dinner in January. The new uniforms were a hit with members and the wider junior league fraternity, and we look forward to the wonderful relationship with Steve and SONETA continuing to grow moving forward. This season also saw our Association welcome a new sponsor, with First National Real Estate Daystar at Revesby signing on for 2 seasons. As a sponsor, Daystar have exclusive naming rights of the Blue & White Cabaret Function and Life Members Function, as well as sponsoring our brand-new award – the ‘Daystar First National Trainer of the Year’ Award. A special thanks to Michael Sleiman, Paul Davis and the team at Daystar for their generous support of our Association and we are hopeful of a wonderful relationship growing in the years to come. Junior League After a difficult 2020, the Board and staff at the Junior League largely remained the same. Wayne Oxford retained Presidency for the 2021 season, with John Grealy entering his second season as Head of Junior League. I recall commending John and his staff for their efforts last season in what was a difficult year. Unfortunately, things only got worse in 2021. We were hampered by COVID protocols early in the season before the delta outbreak forced the postponement of the season on June 25th. At the time, we were all optimistic of the season returning in a matter of weeks, but as COVID spread the reality set in that this outbreak was much worse than first feared, and the

15

CBDRLRA Inc. 100th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2021

unfortunate news that the 2021 season would be abandoned was made official on August 16th. During the season shutdown between June-August, the Association ran weekly video sessions keeping members engaged with the hope of the season recommencing. I wish to thank David Abood and Brad Zarb for their efforts in running these sessions and to all members who turned up each Sunday night, I thank you also. In what was a difficult period for everyone across the state, it was pleasing to see members catch up each Sunday and enjoy the sessions put together. Membership & Meetings This year the Association held 6 meetings, including the AGM and the average attendance was 41. That kind of average is similar to pre-COVID times, where we had meetings without any restrictions or protocols, so to still achieve that number is a testament to all members. We welcomed 6 new members on board for the season (Daniel Tarchichi, Sarah Kitiona, Sione Lolohea, Hamzah Rashid, Ana Seata Takapautolo, Tamiki Tohia). Due to washouts and COVID, most of our new members only managed 1 weekend before the season was abandoned. This was bitterly disappointing and whilst out of our control, we will do our best to ensure all new members get the full CBRA experience in 2022! Training & Development David Abood returned for a second season as Training Coordinator and unfortunately between COVID, lack of numbers and light issues it wasn’t a very successful season. David’s approach to training seems to be popular with all members who regularly attend, and there is a visible benefit to attending each week, but we continue to have the issue of a high percentage of active members failing to regularly attend training, if at all. We as an Association understand that members may have to put work, family, or study before training, but, if you are an active member and find yourself sitting on the lounge at home when training is on, maybe think about coming up to a session and joining in. It may be daunting at first, but like everything the more you do it the easier it

16

CBDRLRA Inc. 100th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2021

becomes. Training is purely for the benefit of active members and with the experienced coaches we have within our Association, we can ensure those members who wish to progress further have all the skills and knowledge at their disposal. There is also a place for the elder statesmen of the Association at training – all are welcome! Awards For the second consecutive season, several of our major awards were not presented due to the abandonment of the season Due to the effect COVID-19 had on our season, the Committee felt that the only awards that could be presented and be judged fairly on their merits were the ‘Leo Randle Award’ and our newest award, the ‘First National Daystar Training of the Year’ Award’. All other Association awards were not presented this season. Congratulations to Barry Belford who was the recipient of the ‘Leo Randle Award’ for this season. Barry continues to be involved within the Association and is a worthy recipient of this honour! The inaugural winner of the ‘First National Real Estate Daystar Trainer of the Year Award’ was Jack McIlvenny. David will touch more on this in his Training Coordinators Report, but to say this award was well deserved by Jack would be a gross understatement. Jack’s commitment and dedication to training each week was first class. Jack always turns up with a smile on his face and gives 100% effort in every facet of training. It was an easy (and in fact unanimous) decision, and we congratulate Jack for his efforts. Grade – NRL/NSWRL The NRL season was once again hampered by COVID-19, with the competition eventually relocating to Queensland in July, with the remainder of the competition, including the Final Series being completed north of the Border. Adam Gee had another successful season, with 2021 being his 11th year in the top grade. Adam refereed 26 matches throughout the season, including being selected for Week 1 of the Final Series, controlling the Sydney Roosters v Gold Coast Titans match @ QCB Stadium in Townsville.

17

CBDRLRA Inc. 100th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2021

Adam has now refereed a total of 186 NRL matches and has become one of the leagues senior referees and we look forward to him bringing up the double century next season! On the Grade front, we once again were represented by Jack Bird, Nathan Loveday, and Jimmy Oliveira. All were regulars in various grades on most weekends up until the cancellation of the NSWRL season in August. Special mention to Jimmy Oliveira who announced his retirement at the end of the 2021 season after 450 matches in Grade – a phenomenal achievement! Thanks again to NSWRLRA for their support throughout the season, in particular Chairman Peter Filmer, Executive Officer Greg McCallum and Directors Matthew Hewitt and Steve Clapson. At a Special General Meeting held in November, members of the NSWRLRA voted to adopt the new Constitution in the next step towards the merger with the CRLRA. We have been advised that this merger will not influence how district Associations continue to operate, and we wish all parties well with the merger moving forward. Vale Unfortunately, season 2021 was another season where members of our Association suffered a loss. In May, we learnt of the passing of Nick Oustambasidis’ mother, Vicki We then were informed of the passing of Reg Marks’ mother, Maxine in August. Our Association passes on our deepest condolences to the Oustambasidis and Marks’ families – both well respected members of our Association. To any member who experienced a loss of a loved one throughout 2021, our thoughts are with you also. Social The season started full of promise, with our Centenary Gala Dinner going ahead in January, albeit under COVID protocols, but all in attendance were still able to enjoy a wonderful evening.

18

CBDRLRA Inc. 100th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2021

We were also lucky enough to be able to hold our ‘First National Daystar Annual Blue & Cabaret’ in June which was well attended and a great night. Unfortunately, COVID-19 ensured many of our remaining events planned for our Centenary season were postponed or cancelled. Majority of our General Meetings were cancelled, our Life Member’s Reunion also cancelled, whilst our Training & Development Camp has been postponed to the weekend of February 5th-6th. We held our postponed Centenary BBQ on Sunday 16th January 2022 which was well attended by member’s and guests. Special thanks to Mark Nicholls from the South Sydney Rabbitohs who was our guest speaker at extremely late notice! A special thank you to Social Secretary Kim Archer and her Social Committee for another year of wonderful events, although some were a late withdrawal from the calendar, we certainly did the best we could with the circumstances we were faced with. General We had 3 members in the ‘Metro Development Squad’ for the 2021 season, with Ramzi Daizli being joined by newcomers to the squad in Matthew Gomes and Jabril Daizli. From all reports, all 3 members are continuing to impress, and it is most pleasing to see these members coming back to CBRA training and offering advice and guidance to our younger more inexperienced members. This is exactly what our Association is all about! In exciting news, we have 5 members in this squad in 2022, with Colton Anderson-Seaton and Rami Abu-Mansour joining Ramzi, Matthew and Jabril. We wish all members well for the upcoming season. Unfortunately, due to border closures our annual exchanges were unable to proceed again in 2021. We are hopeful of eventually being able to participate in these programs again soon and renewing our relationships with Gold Coast and Auckland Referees. Our Association was made aware of some very disappointing news, with one of our young, promising active members Owen Millar being diagnosed with

19

CBDRLRA Inc. 100th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2021

cancer in May of this year. Owen is a wonderful member with a bright future ahead of him, and we are right behind him every step of the way with his battle. Whilst it was a difficult year for so many and our season was heavily disrupted due to COVID-19, with all darkness comes hope and it was most pleasing to see some positive news filter through the Association throughout the year. In April, Jack Bird tied the knot to the lovely Courtney. Congratulations! It was also exciting to hear of a couple of engagements, with Joseph Tesoriero and Jacinta becoming engaged, and Life Member Nathan Loveday dropping down on one knee and proposing to long-time girlfriend Karissa! We wish Joseph & Jacinta, as well as Nathan & Karissa all the very best preparing for the next exciting chapter! Not to be out done, former President and Life Member David Abood and wife Amanda welcomed a new addition to the family, with Ethan James Abood joining the world on Wednesday 22nd December 2021. The old clippings and CBRA photos in the Abood lounge room have now been replaced with a cot and change table! Congratulations David and Amanda. In closing, I continue to enjoy serving as your Secretary and I want to again thank all the members for their support throughout another difficult season. I am so proud to have become a Life Member of this Association and one of the best decisions I have ever made was picking up the phone 16 years ago and calling Lionel Brown with an interest in becoming a referee. I could’ve never predicted what being a member of CBRA would do for me as a person and I truly implore our younger members to get involved. We must continue to evolve with the times and fresh faces and fresh ideas are always welcome! Thanks to all other members who served on the committee again throughout 2021. I think in such difficult times, decisions must be made hastily, and our committee was always willing to jump on a Zoom call and discuss ideas and suggestions on how we work our way through the pandemic. As I have done each season, I must personally thank Paul Archer who continues to show incredible leadership and guide our Association through the most difficult of times.

20

CBDRLRA Inc. 100th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2021

No one knows what 2022 will look like as far as the COVID-19 pandemic is concerned, but I am confident we are well equipped to adapt as required and continue to serve the Junior League to the best of our ability. 2021 was another difficult year, but I know we will be back bigger and better and I look forward to seeing members at our Annual General Meeting which is scheduled for Wednesday 9th March 2022 @ Canterbury League Club.

SOCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT Mrs. Kim Archer

Social Committee: Garth Mitchell, Kane Thorburn & Col Turnell Leading up to 2021, the Centenary year for the Association was extremely busy as we prepared for a full social calendar to celebrate 100 years of CBDRLRA. Intense planning for our Gala Centenary Dinner, venue, invitations, menus, accommodation packages, photographer, entertainment, room styling, and gifts was all very time consuming and of course with the pandemic the worry if the function could proceed at all! I appreciated the support of my fellow Centenary Social Committee of Kane Thorburn and Adam Gee who were allotted various tasks. It would be remiss if I didn’t mention our President, my husband Paul who also worked long hours to contribute to the smooth organisation and conduct of the function. The Gala Dinner was able to go ahead with numbers limited to 180 due to Covid restrictions and unfortunately no dancing was allowed. Several special guests were in attendance including members of the Board of both the Canterbury League (major sponsor) and Bulldogs Football Club and Junior Bulldogs, representatives from NSWRL, NSWRLRA, affiliated associations and NRL referees. A special mention to our sponsors who attended, Steve & Sara Dib (Soneta), Geoff & Micheline Dib (DeVel), Bruce & Lyn Pawley (Bankstown RSL) and Buddy & Nancy Semrani (Cleanrite). The venue was the subject to much discussion prior to the event but I’m sure that I can speak from all who attended we could not have selected a more perfect location, pre-dinner drinks in the Rose Garden followed by the formal dinner in The Big Barn at the William Inglis Hotel, the venue was why we selected January for the dinner to make the most of the gardens. Following the dinner, drinks were in the Garden Pavilion, which was most enjoyable in particular to those dozen people who saw the commencement of trackwork at 3am, including our President (who hasn’t had a red since!).

CBDRLRA Inc. 100th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2021

Once our season commenced, we conducted our regular Trot night at Menangle Park, attended by 40 people, a most enjoyable and popular annual function. Our meeting on Sunday 6th June was scheduled to fall on the exact date in 1922 when the CBDRLRA was formed, guest speakers were NRL referees’ Ben Cummins and Gavin Badger (retired) who participated in a Q & A with our own former first grade referees in Col Turnell and Matt Hewitt. Following the meeting we provided finger food and drinks. Our new sponsor, Michael Sleiman who was attending his first function with us was so impressed with our meeting that he doubled his sponsorship for 2021, a great surprise and a wonderful gesture. I am confident that First National Daystar will be a longterm sponsor. On Sunday 13th June, we conducted our First National Daystar Blue & White Dinner, a great crowd with over 150 attendees, who dined, wined, and danced the night away! Due to our Centenary year we changed to the Paragon Room at the League Club and had some other additional changes to our regular function including a 100th Anniversary cake. During the evening Life Membership was presented to Daniel Gardner and Nathan Loveday. Both wonderful contributors to our Association, congratulations guys. President Paul Archer also presented a framed CBDRLRA jersey and shorts to our wonderful sponsors Steve Dib (Soneta) and Geoff Dib (DeVel) for their ongoing support. The Dib family are terrific supporters and we have formed a strong friendship with the family. Thank you, Steve & Geoff. Exactly 1 week following our Blue & White dinner the pandemic again was with us, all on and off field activity was cancelled. On the social front this meant our First National Daystar Life Members lunch scheduled for September and our Centenary BBQ was also off and our Training Camp was postponed. Once lockdown was over, we commenced plans to recommence some social activities and in November we had a Pizza night at Moxon Road Club where we had a good roll up.

23

CBDRLRA Inc. 100th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2021

Also, we were able to have a General Meeting night on December 1st where fingered food and drinks followed. The BBQ which was renamed the First National Daystar Centenary BBQ was rescheduled for the Garden Pavilion at William Inglis Hotel in mid-January 2022 with 80 members and guests. Thanks to Mark Nicholls from the South Sydney Rabbitohs who was our Guest Speaker at late notice. The Committee resolved that the Training Camp be now scheduled for the weekend of 4th – 6th February 2022, the Leo Randle Trust is covering the costs of the accommodation and the Association shall cover other costs in our appreciation of the support of our active members who have stayed the course over the past 2 most difficult years. In conclusion, although our Centenary year was disrupted by the lockdowns due to the pandemic it was most rewarding that we were able to conduct important social functions to celebrate 100 years of history and achievement by our membership. Thank you to both the General Committee and my Social Committee of Kane Thorburn, Col Turnell & Garth Mitchell, also to you the members whose attendance at our various functions make our efforts worthwhile. I continue to enjoy contributing to our Association as your Social Secretary. Bring on year 101.

DIRECTOR OF REFEREE’S REPORT Mr. Richard Daizli

It was another short season in 2021 due to the pandemic but unlike 2020 where the season was able to be completed with a final’s series, 2021 saw only the first 9 rounds completed. The early completion to the season resulted in no finals matches being played and an empty feeling for all involved. I would like to thank Nathan Loveday, Daniel Gardner, and Jamie Pomeroy for their assistance this year. Hopefully with a full season next year, we will be able to implement programs that will develop our referees and help them fulfil their ambitions. This will include increasing the number of assessments for each referee as we now have an abundance of young referees that will be looking to progress up the grades. Even though there was only 9 weeks of footy, our referees performed strongly. There were several weeks where referees from St George and Cronulla assisted us to cover the large number of games on Saturdays and I would like to thank those associations and referees for their support. In return, we also had referees assist in the St George and Cronulla junior leagues. Several referees were promoted to higher grades so as to prepare them for development opportunities in the coming years. This ensures we as an association are supportive of the pathways system that has been created by the league in developing referees. Better commitment to training will ensure they are ready to take the next step. It was pleasing to hear that Rami Abu Mansour and Colton Anderson-Seaton have been selected in the 2022 Development Squad. Hopefully they both train well and are part of the squad long term. Both have shown great improvement and eagerness to learn and deserve their opportunity. There are always opportunities for those willing to do the hard work so if you have ambition to progress through the ranks, it is up to you to put the effort in. Senior members will always be there to help guide and support you on your journey.

Unfortunately, due to the early finish to the season, there were no major awards this year for on field performance. Thank you to the executive board, the junior league and district club for their support during this difficult year. Enjoy the festive season, stay safe, maintain good hygiene, train hard and set your goals for 2022. Hopefully we get to complete a full season. Ensure you read the Laws of the Game and work hard to fulfill your goals.

NSWRLRA GRADE SQUAD REPORT Mr. Jack Bird

The 2021 season had its ups and downs. After COVID-19 impacted the 2020 season, we saw the return of some normality in 2021. We were optimistic about the start of a new season, with preseason seeing the squad training together on both Monday and Wednesday nights - a welcome change from the fragmented training in 2020. Further, we were informed that all the major NSW competitions were coming back to full capacity. Season 2021 also bought with it several rule changes, and the return of the one referee model to NSW Cup. The squad worked hard in preseason and trial games to adapt to these changes, ensuring that we could hit the ground running once the season began. Throughout the season there were number of big milestones achieved in the squad. Daniel Luttringer and Clayton Wills had their refereeing debuts in NSW Cup; Kieran Irons made his NRL debut on the touchline; Ben Teague officiated in his 200th game in the NSW Grade Squad; and our very own Jimmy Oliveira officiated in his 450th game as a member of the NSW Grade Squad, an extraordinary achievement! There were several new additions to the Grade squad in 2021, with Michael Ford (Illawarra), Brendan Mani (St George), and Ethan Murray (Parramatta) joining our ranks. Regrettably, after a solid start to the season, several cancellations, and delays in late June due to the COVID-19 outbreak culminated in the NSW Rugby League making the tough decision to cancel the NSW major competitions on 10th August. Bringing the Grade squad’s season to an early end. At the end of the 2021 season, Jimmy Oliveira announced his retirement from the NSW Grade squad after a decorated 15-year career, dating back to 2007. As previously mentioned, Jimmy officiated in over 450 games as a member of the NSW grade squad. An outstanding achievement that I know Jimmy and this association are incredibly proud of.

TRAINING REPORT Mr David Abood

Having lost such a large slice of the 2020 season to Covid, and with the hugely successful Centenary Dinner behind us, I expected the 2021 year to commence in a burst of enthusiasm, and training numbers to soar. Unfortunately, my expectations failed to be met from the outset, with attendance poor from the first night, and failing to get beyond numbers of 12 or so on our best nights. Having said that, thank you to the guys who did turn up every week and put in the effort……I hope you believe that you gained some benefit from the sessions. It is also pleasing to see the increasing maturity and leadership that is being shown by some of our young junior representative referees in these sessions, particularly Jabril Daizli and Matt Gomes who both impressed me with their efforts and commitment to the association. I also want to make special mention of two other members. The first is Gavin Beecroft. As many are aware, Gav has been around for a long time as a member, and if anyone had an excuse not to turn up to training, it would be Gav. Yet every week, he was there ready to have a crack and work hard, always putting in a 100% effort. He might not be the gazelle he was at 20, but his commitment to his own improvement is unquestionable. The second is Jack McIlvenny. Jack is not the most gifted athlete in the squad, but every week he would turn up and work his butt off. There were some weeks where I was concerned that he was pushing himself too hard and would make him sit out a set or two to get his breath back. Jack’s efforts at training epitomise what the senior members of our association want to see from other members – full commitment and effort to improve their refereeing and raise the standing of our association. For his efforts, Jack has been rewarded by becoming the inaugural winner of the association Training Award. Congratulations Jack – this is well deserved recognition for your efforts. To those who do not attend, nobody can force you, and it is often easier to find an excuse than to get to training, especially on the colder nights. But if you are

34

CBDRLRA Inc. 100th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2021

a young referee and want to make it anywhere in this game, you need to build your resilience and utilise every means to improve – even referees with the very best ability will not make it without commitment. At some point in the future, another Canterbury member will trot out to start an NRL match, and it is likely that he or she was the one who went down to Neptune Park a few years earlier, on a windy June night with the temperature at 8 degrees, rather than staying home in a warm house. I hope that all members and their families had a safe and wonderful Christmas and new year.

NRL SQUAD REPORT Mr. Adam Gee

At the end of last year’s report, I hoped for the 2021 season to be Covid free with no biosecurity bubbles. Wishful thinking! I guess the theme this year was new variants, vaccines, and relocations. The season began with a further tweak to the new six again rule being introduced for offsides as well as ruck infringements. Again, with the intention to see more free-flowing football and ball in play. As with anything within our game, there will be lovers and haters, but everyone eventually adapts, and the show goes on. The first half of the season allowed our part time officials to re-join the fold and be available to be appointed to games. This saw the milestone of Kieron Irons making his debut on the touchline, along with Tyson Brough and Nick Beashel reaching 250 games. Further milestones included Phil Henderson achieving 100 games as a Touch Judge and appointed to his first Origin series, followed by David Munro’s appointment to his first NRL Grand Final as a Touch Judge. Wyatt Raymond joined the full- time squad and debuted as a Touch Judge, Ashley Klein reached 200 games as a Video Ref, Jared Maxwell 300 as a Video Ref and Steve Chiddy 400 games as a Video Ref. To top off the milestones, Gerry Sutton joined the 300 club as a Referee and Ben Cummins broke records achieving 400 games as a Referee. A true testament to Ben’s commitment, dedication, and resilience throughout his career. Magic Round in Brisbane saw the game move in a direction to really enforce foul play and look after players safety and wellbeing. This led to a weekend of controversy accompanied with multiple sin bins and send offs with the hope to change player behaviour and keep the game we love as safe as possible. With no incident being the same as another there was always going to be much debate around the incidents and games, however, change occurred, players

36

CBDRLRA Inc. 100th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2021

and officials adapted which led to some tight, intense matches in the latter half of the season. Just following Magic Round, Sydney was hit by another Covid wave. The Commission along with Andrew Abdo, Grahem Annesley and their staff took it upon themselves to undertake the mammoth logistical task of relocating the entire competition to Queensland into three separate hubs, which essentially saved the season. The Referees and staff shared a hotel for five weeks in Brisbane with the Sharks, Tigers and Dragons. Teams and Referees had their own team rooms or common rooms, however, we shared and utilised training facilities at varying times along with the dining areas, pool & gym. This was a unique situation, but one which had to be embraced under the circumstances and allowed interaction and a chance to build rapport whilst constantly being Covid tested. Covid conditions allowed both players and referees alike to witness the other side of the person away from the intense on-field environment. It was an insight into how varying athletes prepare and recover. You could see the highs and lows the players have, especially if someone’s season had ended through injury the night before, just as they could witness if a Referee was being criticised publicly after a match. This made for an interesting conversation over coffee! After approximately three weeks many players’ wives, partners and children arrived along with some of the Referees families. This saw the hotel become quite crowded as we moved down the road in Southbank to apartments. The game did a wonderful job to keep the competition going and we were very fortunate to visit some regional Queensland venues along with games where the other hubs were on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. As mentioned, some officials were lucky enough to have their families come up to Queensland. Others due to work or family circumstances could not take up this option. It would be remiss not to acknowledge the sacrifices people made not just in officiating, but the broader game and their families to allow the competition to continue for the three months of relocation through to the first ever Grand Final at Suncorp Stadium.

37

CBDRLRA Inc. 100th Annual Report & Financial Statement – Season 2021

At the end of the season, we farewelled Henry Perenara who unfortunately had to medically retire from on-field duties and decided to completely finish up from bunker duties as well. Henry made a very successful transition from playing into refereeing and I am sure has made lifelong friendships along the way. Last but not least, Matt Checchin also announced his retirement and was farewelled by a guard of honour from players and officials along with a standing ovation from the crowd after his final match at Sunshine Coast Stadium. Both Matt and Henry were very well liked and respected members of the squad and will be sorely missed. On behalf of Canterbury Referees, I would like to personally congratulate them on their careers and wish them all the very best in their future endeavours. I am sure season 2022 will still bring its challenges, but hopefully some form of normality for players, officials, and fans.

HON. TREASURERS REPORT Mr. Gavin Beecroft

As always, it is with pleasure that I submit the 2021 financial accounts to members for financial year ending 31 October 2021. Our overall result for the 12 months to 31 October 2020 was a decrease in equity of -$38,025.58. A result expected, given our Centenary celebrations, which the Association had planned for over many years in advance in preparation for this major milestone for the Association. Once again Covid-19 affected our regular season, we managed to get the first half of season in this year, a complete reversal from season 2020. Income from sponsorship was up slightly during season 2021, compared to last year, which we are extremely thankful for, as many of our sponsors have had their own trading pressures. It is pleasing to see sponsors once again commit to assisting CBRA. We should appreciate their efforts and our members are encouraged to use their services, whenever possible Grants from NSWRLRA were once again resumed for season 2021, after an absence in 2020. CBRA received a total of $5,700.00 for Administration, Coaching & Development Grants from NSWRLRA. As expected, and planned, our expenses increased as part of our Centenary celebrations, kicking off with our Gala Dinner in January 2021, and what a great night it was to celebrate at the William Inglis, Warwick Farm. Once again, a few functions were lost during 2021, due to Covid-19, hopefully, now we can resume our normal functions for season 2022. We are grateful of the continued support, we received from our sponsors, all sponsors have committed their support into season 2022, which is a great help to our financial position.
