Dance dance whoever you may be... Well-known television shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, Britain’s Got Talent, and So You Think You Can Dance? all have mass appeal to the younger audience. These days, if you can dance, it’s seen as cool, that’s why boys and girls nationwide are enjoying everything from Street-dance to Cheerleading.
Dance is a fantastic way to get your children moving and to have fun. It is also great for: • improving cardiovascular and muscular fitness • increasing bone density • improving motors skills such as coordination and balance • improving posture • increasing confidence, energy and motivation. Total Dance, a local Leeds dance school, helps children get more active through dance. Its main aim is to eliminate the traditional strict setting of a dance studio and focus on fun. For more information on Total Dance children email info@totaldanceuk. co.uk or visit www.totaldanceuk.co.uk
Infant appetite and feeding study – could you help? The University of Leeds is carrying out research on eating behaviour in babies and young children. People are being invited to take part in a study called LULLABYs (Leeds University Little ones Appetite Behaviour study). Its aim is to understand how children’s appetite and feeding behaviours differ from one another. Knowing this will make it easier to help children who develop problems, and inform parents on encouraging their children to have a healthy appetite.
If you decide to take part, one or two of the researchers from the team would like to visit you and your child either at your local Children’s Centre, at home or at the University, at a time convenient to you. The visit will take about an hour and a half and all information will be kept strictly confidential. For further information or to take part, please contact either of the following: Sarah Smith E: S.A.Smith09@leeds.ac.uk T: (0113) 343 5729 Dr. Samantha Caton E: S.Caton@leeds.ac.uk T: (0113) 343 6692
The University is looking for babies and infants aged from birth to three years to help with its investigations. Parents, caregivers, and childminders are welcome to take part and will be reimbursed for any travel costs.

Food
Super soups Soups are not only a great way to get your kids to eat vegetables but are also ideal for freezing and reheating for a quick and nutritious dinner.
Leek and potato soup Preparation time: 10-15 minutes Cooking time: 35 minutes
Ingredients 50g butter/margarine 2 large leeks chopped ½ medium onion chopped 1 medium potato peeled and chopped into small cubes 2 vegetable stock cubes made up with 850 ml water Large pinch of mixed herbs 3 bay leaves Salt and black pepper to taste.
Method
Ingredients
1. Melt butter/margarine in a large lidded pan. 2. Add onions and leeks to butter, sweat over a medium heat for a few minutes. 3. Add remaining ingredients ie potatoes, stock, mixed herbs, bay leaves, salt and pepper. 4. Bring to the boil then simmer for 20 minutes. 5. Leave to cool, then liquidise all of the soup for a super smooth consistency, or for a chunky ‘homemade’ texture, just liquidise half of the soup and then mix together. 6. Ensure the soup is thoroughly reheated before serving.
225g strong plain white flour or plain wholemeal flour 1 level teaspoon salt 1 level teaspoon sugar 15g (1 level tablespoon) soft tub margarine 1 sachet (6g) easy blend dried yeast 150ml warm water. Ensure that water is warm and not hot.
Butterbean and carrot soup Preparation time: 10-15 minutes Cooking time: 45 minutes
Ingredients 250g dried butterbeans soaked overnight in cold water (keep the water topped up) 50g butter/margarine 5 large carrots chopped 1 medium onion chopped 1 vegetable stock cube made up with 425ml water 1 chicken stock cube made up with 425ml water Salt and black pepper to taste.
Method
Method 1. Put the flour in the mixing bowl and add sugar and salt. 2. Add the margarine and rub into the flour using your finger tips. 3. Add the dried yeast and stir, then add all the water at once and stir together using a wooden spoon. 4. As the dough gets tough use your hands to mix until it leaves the sides of the bowl clean, then put onto a floured surface. 5. Now for the fun! The dough will feel tight – knead it to make smooth and stretchy. Gather it back into a ball, turn slightly and then repeat. Do this for about 5 minutes until the dough feels smooth or until you run out of steam. 6. Shape the dough into your own design and place on a greased baking tray. 7. Cover the bread with oiled cling film to stop it drying out. Then put the tray in a warm place to help the dough rise. 8. Now set the oven to 230°C/450°F/Gas Mark 8.
As per leek and potato soup recipe but substitute leeks for carrots and potato for drained butterbeans.
9. When the loaf shape has approximately doubled in size (after around 30 minutes), remove the cling film and place the tray in the centre of the oven.
Blooming bread
10. Bake the loaf for 20-25 minutes. It should be golden brown and sound hollow when tapped underneath.
You can get your children to help – they will enjoy kneading the dough and making the bread nearly as much as eating it. When done, why not dip into one of the super soups!
11. Put the loaf on a wire rack to cool and tuck in.

Improve - not move Looking for some great ways to make the most out of your existing home? Read on for space-saving ideas plus advice on current planning regulations from local architect, Marion Cole.
a service that extends well beyond producing a set of drawings – they’ll handle the paperwork, bring value for money, peace of mind and imagination to your project whilst keeping it on track.” (http://www. architecture.com/UseAnArchitect/ Home.aspx)
We have all been there... you walk into the lounge and it looks like it has been hit by a tornado with toys, paper, crayons all over the place. Why do our little people take up so much space?
Ideally, get an architect to come to your home and discuss your plans in as much detail as possible. If you can do a quick sketch of your plans beforehand it’s a great discussion tool – don’t worry if it’s not to scale or your drawing skills are not great! From this, the architect will be able to give you an idea of the fees involved. This first ‘consultation’ will by and large be free but this depends on the individual practice.
Many families think they need to move to get the space they need but with recent changes in planning regulations alongside some clever space-making ideas, we look at how you can make the most out of your existing home.
“” It needn’t be as
costly or daunting as you might imagine. You could convert your garage into a playroom, get an extra bedroom in the loft, and a downstairs toilet under the stairs – all with relative ease. Space saving Firstly, have a look at how you are using your house. Sometimes just by rearranging furniture
and de-cluttering you can ‘create’ space. If you look online, there is an abundance of nifty storage solutions. Whether it’s a toy box cleverly disguised as a footstool, a coffee table with hidden drawers to store all your child’s art and crafts paraphernalia, or a trundle bed for when guests stay, dual purpose furniture is an ideal way of making best use of your space. Is your garage full of junk, your loft full of boxes, your cupboard under the stairs full of shoes? All of these areas can be easily converted into ‘usable spaces’ without the need to jump through planning permission hoops. It needn’t be as costly or daunting as you might imagine. You could convert your garage into a playroom, get an extra bedroom in the loft, and a downstairs toilet under the stairs – all with relative ease. Call in the experts Once you have exhausted all possibilities you may decide that extending or knocking down some walls to reconfigure the layout of your home is the best solution. Before doing anything, contact an architect! Local architect Marion Cole, explains: “As always, recommendation from someone you know is ideal but you can also contact the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for a list of fully qualified architects in your area.” “A RIBA Chartered Architect can help you realise your objectives and guide you through the design and construction process. They provide
Most architects will take some measurements and be happy to provide you with a sketch of the proposed design in order to confirm what you discussed. This is often referred to as a Feasibility Study and generally you won’t be charged a fee for this stage. Getting permission You can make certain types of minor changes to your house or business without needing to apply for planning permission. These are called ‘permitted development rights’. For more details, visit the following link: http://www.leeds.gov.uk/ Environment_and_planning/ Planning/Permitted_development_ _do_I_need_planning_permission_ .aspx If your proposals do not fall within the conditions of ‘permitted development’, you will need to apply to your local council for planning permission. Your architect will guide you through this process, provide

the drawings as well as completing (and submitting) the relevant forms. The council will charge a planning application fee, for an extension or alteration to an existing house this would be approximately £150. In addition to ‘planning/permitted development’ approval you will also need ‘Building Regulations’ approval. This can be done in two ways: Full Plan Application or Building Notice. Your architect will advise you on which option is best. For a Full Plan application, the council will charge a fee of approximately £140. An inspection of the building works is also necessary, for which an additional fee of £350 will be charged. Architects fees will vary but as a rough guide you can expect to pay £500 - £1000 for planning and the same again for Building Regulations. It’s important to realise that although they will do their best to obtain approval architects cannot guarantee it will be given. Contact http://www.leeds.gov. uk/Business/Building_control/ Cowboy_builders.aspx to find a local, trustworthy builder. Finally, you may find it useful to discuss your ideas with your neighbours too. This is especially important prior to submitting planning approval or before construction commences. Most people will be more understanding and accepting of any mess or disturbance if they have been informed beforehand. If you would like to discuss your plans or for more information, contact Marion Cole on 07786 634314.

Following the signs Vicki Gilbert, director of Babies Can Sign looks at how babies can start communicating from an early age.
Babies are born with an instinctive ability to communicate – they cry, look, and move their bodies. Although they cannot speak at this early stage, they do have the ability to understand and use language, and with the right guidance have much to say with their hands! How often have you wondered I wish I knew what my baby was thinking or I don’t know why he is crying today? This is where signing with a baby can really help. Babies naturally already use a combination of sound and gestures as part of their normal development, and introducing them to signing will help them to communicate their emotions, needs and much more! Using the original and hugely successful baby signing programme – SIGN with your BABY® - your teacher will show you how to add gestures to your speech, in the form of signs based on British Sign Language (BSL).This enables your baby to link the spoken word and its meaning with the appropriate sign helping you to communicate with each other. There are many advantages of using BSL, mainly that you and your child are learning a recognised language therefore gaining an important life skill which can continue long after learning to talk. As opposed to using a made-up or mixed-up sign language, signs can also be recognised by others. There is a sign for everything and although the programme is designed primarily for hearing babies and their parents or carers, classes are also accessible to those who are deaf
or hearing impaired or have other communication difficulties. The ability to speak doesn’t develop until around 12-18 months but experience and 20 years of research tells us that babies can sign from as early as six months when they gain more control over their hand and eye co-ordination. However, the majority of babies sign back on average between 10 and 13 months. Through signing, babies can tell you what they are thinking, for example if they are hungry or thirsty or even if they need sleep, or are in pain – and where it hurts! This can obviously reduce frustration for both babies and their parents or carers, when little ones cannot otherwise express their needs. You’ve probably already started to use gestures of some kind with your baby or those in your care – waving goodbye, for example – and taking the next step to baby signing will make all the difference. It’s great fun too! At Babies Can Sign™ musical activities, story-telling and play are used to teach a range of signs. Lots of puppets and props are used to help teach signs and add to the enjoyment! Classes and workshops are taught by qualified and experienced signers, many of whom are experienced teachers, who hold appropriate insurance and CRB checks. For more information, call 07742 296160, email enquiries@babiescansign.co.uk or visit www.babiescansign.co.uk or www.sign2me.com

offer children under five and their families the services they need, including information and access to childcare integrated with early education, health services, advice for parents and help to access training and work. For more information on what is on offer at Alwoodley Children's Centre please contact us on 0113 2170134 or come along and visit us to view the facilities.
The arts have real status at Allerton CE Primary with: • a designated visual arts teacher • a resident artist who supports our Arts week and undertakes a 3D art club using recyclable materials • a street dance club • a dance club • a drama club • a bell plates club • weekly music lesson opportunities for all pupils • weekly string tuition for Years 4 & 5 delivered by Artforms • links with Artforms and Leeds Media Centre.
The celebration kick started with a private viewing, where our proud artists mingled with parents, teaching staff, governors, consultants, advisors and friends of the school. Scaffolding provided the back drop for exquisite silk screens and wallpaper designs whilst climbing apparatus framed fabulous sketch book work, clay tiles inspired by Gustav Klimt and fabric paintings. Performances by Leeds Chinese Community School Dancers, Street Dancers and PACE Dancers took place between stunning butterflies, scaffolding and washing lines containing more impressive work. The dancers demonstrated incredible control and spatial awareness!
As a school, we are fortunate to have some incredibly talented young people who love the arts. In July, we celebrated their creativity with style, at our first ever 'ACE Works' Exhibition. The school hall became the gallery, dance floor and stage for fantastic art and performances.

Our guitarists, Year 6 pupils using ‘garage band’ software and musicians from ‘Chevin Music’ provided the music for the evening whilst CREATE – an award winning social enterprise – provided food and drink. As Chris Edwards, CEO of Education Leeds, commented, “Picasso said that every child is born an artist; visit Allerton CE Primary and you’ll see the proof!” Our Year 3 children also entered the Open Show at Leeds Art Gallery having attended a workshop there, and five of our pupils had their art work selected! Their masterpieces will be exhibited between 8 August and 19 September. If you want to find out more about Allerton CE Primary School, please call 0113 293 0699 or visit www.allertonceprimary.com

Dad zone
Dads juggle too Father of two young boys, Mark Baldwin, shares his experiences of the modern day dad. Having grown up in a very typical ‘toothbrush’ family with mum, dad and ‘2.4’ children, I believe that so much of how you respond to being a father is based on your own life experiences as a child. My father was the disciplinarian and the ‘bread winner’, a real hunter gatherer. The phrase “wait ‘til your father gets home” frequently rung out around our house, as my elder brother and I repeatedly fought and squabbled, for what seemed like most of our childhood years. Looking back, now with two small boys of my own, it certainly has shaped my approach to parenting but a lot has changed through that generational timeline. My wife and I both pursue careers; we are equal partners in many aspects of family life – financially, domestically and in terms of parenting. We have a general rule of thumb that we apply to the working week – I will get the boys up in the morning, washed, dressed, fed and safely dropped off at nursery/school. My wife will collect them at the end of the day and get them bathed, changed and ready for bed.
The role of ‘dad’ is sometimes overlooked. Playing an equally important role in bringing up their children as mums, Boo’s Dad zone gives fathers a chance to have their say. If you would like to contribute to the Dad zone, please email: liz.rhodes@boomag.co.uk
It sounds simple. It is also made possible by having a very flexible employer. At least three days a week I commute to London (after the nursery/school run) and I’m in my office by 10am. It does come with its challenges. Having done this for four years now, there are numerous stories to share about ‘near misses’. Children and train timetables are not the best match. My one year old is obliviously unaware that my train leaves in 30 minutes when he decides to spray my suit trousers during a last minute nappy change just as we head out of the door. When you are on such a tight timeline, being ‘dealt such cards’ is – to say the least – not helpful! As I study the clock and continue through the morning routine, they are blissfully unaware of the military precision with which I approach this. Nevertheless, I can honestly say that I’ve loved every minute. Spending that first hour or so of the boys day with them is so rewarding.

Thinking ahead, I firmly believe there will be another generational shift. My own personal vision of working life in 30 years time involves even greater flexible working patterns, facilitating further changes to the ‘traditional’ roles of mother and father and to the typical work/life balance cycle that many of us try to juggle. I will probably enjoy this period as a grandfather, and I hope at that time I will have some form of ‘hands on’ role to play in that respect too...slow down on that thought for now though!

Party on! If you’ve got your child’s birthday around the corner, don’t panic – we’ve got inspirational ideas to help it all run smoothly
How old? Babies and toddlers To avoid your child becoming too overwhelmed on their special day, try not to invite too many guests, and keep it short and sweet. It doesn’t have to be a lavish affair – so long as they have cake and everyone sings ‘happy birthday’ to them, they will love it! Pre-schoolers At this age, parties tend to have more importance than before. Quite often, parents are still invited along too to keep them company – but obviously this depends on your child. Primary schoolers As children develop more preferences to what they do and don’t like, you might find that they want to invite a select few friends along to their party.
What to do? The old ones are the best. Why not journey back to your own childhood days and organise a few party games for them all to enjoy and remember forever? Here are some ideas to jog your memory; take your pick depending on the child’s age: • Pass the parcel • Treasure hunts • Pin the tail on the… • Musical chairs/party islands
• Lucky dip • Teddy bear’s picnic • Outdoor sports day • Apple bobbing. If the thought of holding a party at home fills you with dread, what about hiring a local hall and getting a party entertainer to do it for you? For older children, why not take a select few swimming, skiing, bowling, go karting or ice skating?
or scampi! You could organise a treasure hunt in the garden where the jewels are a chest filled with chocolate money or play pin the eye patch on the pirate!
Local companies here to help Lello and Monkey
Theme it? If you have the time and slightest imagination, themed parties can help it all go with a swing! For a princess theme, you could start by only serving pink food such as marshmallows or jam sandwiches. Instead of playing musical chairs, give princess islands a try using mats on the floor. You could also aim to recreate your own Jungle Book at home or in the garden, weather permitting. Why not use jungle foam masks to transform the children into fun animals? Towards the end of the party, the children can play sleeping lions, where the aim is to lay as still as possible on the floor – any movement or growls and the child is out. Always a favourite with the parents!
Party kits from Lello and Monkey make children’s parties more rewarding, more memorable and more enjoyable! The company offers parents great products and advice for hosting the perfect children’s party.
A jolly pirate party is a great opportunity to serve a range of healthy party food options such as fish dishes. The catch of the day could be anything from cod, haddock

Talking your language Lucy Amos, qualified teacher and founder of Little Fidgets, has some useful tips on getting your child (and you) to learn a new language Children who learn a second language gain much broader benefits than simply communicating in another language. For instance, they improve their English grammar because they develop an intuitive understanding of how language works.
change the language option on a favourite DVD. If your child already knows the story line they’ll pick up lots of new, useful phrases by watching in French or Spanish. Booking a holiday in France or Spain is a great way to motivate yourself to learn too. While you are abroad, try and pick up some simple picture books to read to your child. Flash cards are a good resource – pin a new one up on your fridge every day and by the end of the year you’ll have learnt 365 new words! The internet has lots of totally free resources.
“” University research also shows that University research also shows that learning a language is much easier for young children because they can copy accents and learn large amounts of new vocabulary effortlessly. If you want to give your child some help, the most obvious course is to sign up for a language class. At Little Fidgets parents and carers attend lessons with their children so that it becomes a shared family experience. There are also a number of things you can do to help your child at home. Try to get in the habit of counting things in your chosen language. For example, count the stairs in French as you go up to bed, count birds in your garden, biscuits on a plate etc. Encourage your children to say ‘Yes, please’ or ‘No, thank you’ in your chosen language and see if you can

learning a language is much easier for young children because they can copy accents and learn large amounts of new vocabulary effortlessly. Finally, the more fun you can make it, the more likely your child is to want to continue. Don’t worry about making mistakes yourself – it’s far more important to show your child you’re prepared to have a go. For further information on classes you can contact Lucy at Little Fidgets on 01904 706565 or email lucy. amos@littlefidgets.co.uk or visit www.littlefidgets.co.uk. Classes are held in Horsforth, Ilkley, Harrogate, Roundhay, Selby and York.
Give a boost to languages in the new term! Start the autumn term with a languages celebration! The European Day of Languages takes place on 26 September each year and is a fantastic opportunity to show students what fun can be had with languages. Whether it’s hosting a French breakfast, organising a multilingual assembly, or linking up with a school in Spain – there are all sorts of ways you can get involved. For a resources pack or more information visit www.cilt.org.uk/edl or http://edl.ecml.at
Free classes On Saturday 25 September, Little Fidgets will be running free language classes at Leeds Central Library as part of the European Languages Day celebrations. Spanish for Fidgets will take place at 13.30 and French for Fidgets at 14.30. Both classes will be run by experienced native speakers using puppets, songs and games. The classes are aimed at children aged 2-7 years old and will be approximately 25 minutes long. Little Fidgets say its primary aim is not to teach French or Spanish but to demonstrate to children and parents how fun and rewarding language learning really can be and that the key to success lies in starting young. Call Leeds Library on (0113) 247 6016 or Little Fidgets on 01904 706565 for further information on bookings or visit www.littlefidgets. co.uk

You time Tips for busy parents
Being a good parent is another role you play in your hectic life next to being the successful professional, loyal friend, dedicated gym goer and loving partner. Often time for yourself comes last (if at all). If this sounds at all familiar, follow these tips to find a little ‘me time’ in your daily routine…
hobby or meet friends for coffee. Even an hour will benefit you, or it can be one weekend a month. Plan the occasion in advance, arrange for a sitter or seek clubs and associations that have a crèche incorporated so your children will be looked after whilst you can relax and enjoy yourself. Physical wellbeing
Organisation Take inspiration from your children’s school day and create a timetable for your week! By writing down your actions, highlighting priorities and designating time to tasks, you are more likely to complete them, so spending less time worrying and adding everything up in your mind. When you break down worries and actions, they’re less stressful. Don’t forget to schedule time for yourself too! Space Make one room in your house your own and use it to relax, work or whatever you wish – away from the family. Develop the understanding with your family that it is your room and your time and that they are to respect that. Making it a rule develops a clear understanding of what you need from yours and their perspective and it will push you to use that time. Socialising It is important that parents get away from the house and have some ‘adult time’. Join a club, develop a
If you find yourself slumped in front of the television every night with a glass of wine, it may seem relaxing after a hard day but alcohol dehydrates you and actually depletes your energy whilst exercise gives you a natural high. Though the idea of exercise may sound awful after a busy day, you will feel naturally energised afterwards and moves such as squats, sit ups and press ups can be done in front of the box – so use the time wisely! Finding ‘me time’ can be challenging but with planning, focus and willpower, it can be done. Start small and it will slowly become part of your new routine. More tips can be found in the Motherhood section of Bethanie Lunn’s new book ‘The Modern Girl’s Guide to Fabulousness’ available from October 2010. Having a Halloween party? Make a splash with a simple apple bobbing game. Fill a trug (a shallow basket used for gardening) or washing-up bowl with water and add lots of apples. Children take it in turns to ‘bob’ for an apple by attempting to pick one up with their mouth – no hands! Make it easier for younger children by using small apples with the stalks on and putting lots of apples in the trug. Have lots of prizes and towels at the ready. Let the gigglefest begin!
Answers to puzzles can be found on our website at www.boomag.co.uk/kids/autumn10answers.pdf

Traditional autumn fun Bashing and bobbing By Claire Oxley
Photography courtesy of Kiss Katch
The leaves are changing colour, Halloween parties and half-term are approaching and the conkers are here! There are few autumn joys better than rummaging around the base of a horse chestnut tree in search of the green spiky cases then cracking them open to reveal the shiny brown jewels inside. Nature’s very own treasure hunt. I kept my treasure in a battered biscuit tin and my brother and I would sit on the back step protectively guarding our loot as we discussed which ones were worthy of battle. Dad imparted wisdom on the various ways to ‘prepare’ them – soaking in malt vinegar, Tetley’s bitter and oven baking were options. The school playground whispered with tales of who was the reigning champion as we huddled around the latest bout to smash the 59-er off the top spot. So pack away the Playstation, grab your wellies and go on a conker quest to revive this traditional game. Conker selection Match fit conkers have no cracks, are firm, symmetrical and sink to the bottom of a bucket of water. Rules of Play Make a hole through the middle of your conker. Thread a piece of string through the hole and tie a knot at one end, so that it doesn’t pull through.
Each player has a conker hanging on its string. Players take turns at hitting their opponent’s conker; continuing their turn until they miss.
Go to... www.worldconkerchampionships. com for more detailed rules and information.
If a player drops their conker or it is knocked out of their hand, the other player can shout ‘stamps’ and jump on it; but should its owner cry ‘no stamps’ first then the conker is spared.
Claire Oxley is a North Yorkshire based mother of two busy boys whose background in teaching, museums and as a newspaper reporter make her well qualified to write about conker bashing pastimes.
The game goes on in turns until one is smashed. Scoring A winning conker assumes the score of all the conkers it has beaten ie in a contest between two fresh conkers, the winner would then have a score of one (known as a ‘one-er’). If it then beat another three one-ers, it would become a four-er and so on.

Bonfire night safety A firework display should be an enjoyable occasion for everyone, but the hazards of fireworks and bonfires should not be underestimated. The safest way to see fireworks is at a public display but if you do want to go ahead and have one at home follow these rules for a safe display. The Firework Code: 1. Buy fireworks marked BS 7114. 2. Keep fireworks in A CLOSED BOX, e.g., a biscuit tin. Take them out one at a time and put the lid back on at once. 3. Follow the instructions on each firework carefully - read them by torchlight. Never a naked flame! 4. Light end of firework fuse at arms length - preferably with a safety firework lighter or fuse wick.
9. Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves. 10. Never give sparklers to a child under five. 11. Keep pets indoors. For more information visit www.westyorksfire.gov.uk
