Where has 2010 gone? Winter has suddenly appeared and yet again it seems to have caught us by surprise. Here at Boo, we have been reflecting on how time has flown by even faster this year. To avoid you starting to break into a cold sweat and panic as you think about getting ready for Christmas, we’ve got some novel ideas. In order to try and help you with the preparations, we have some tasty recipes that would make sensational stocking ideas for the festive season. Laurra from One Life Ceremonies is featured in our cover story to enlighten us on Naming Ceremonies as an alternative celebration to a christening. Boo also talks to Carmen Ellis from Kumon about why tutoring has been surprisingly unaffected by the recession. In this issue, we are taking a look at the cyber world and how it has
been a great source of friendship and support for many parents on page 28. We have a new regular feature ‘What’s it all about?’ on page 24. Each edition our readers will review local classes available for children of different ages so that you can gain a deeper insight before heading along yourself. As usual we have some fantastic competitions on pages 10 and 11 as well as great offers from our advertisers on page 35. The discount for the brand new Fish& takeaway at Dock St Market in Leeds city centre is making us want Fish& Chips as we write this ... Don’t forget to mention Boo to any of our advertisers when using their products or services. It is their support that enables us to be here.

Reflexology – what’s it all about? The origins of this healing art, stem back thousands of years to ancient Egypt, India and China. The modern therapy we know today was principally developed in the early 1900s and advanced by physiotherapist Eunice Ingham in the 1930s. She observed that congestion or
tension in any part of the foot was mirrored in a corresponding part of the body, and named it ‘reflexology’.
What is reflexology? Reflexology is a gentle therapy that encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance. This is just what new mums, dads and even
grandparents, are often in need of when preparing for, or after, a new member of the family comes along!
How can reflexology help? Although it does not claim to cure or diagnose illness, reflexology helps the body along, or ‘kickstarts
Winter 2010 Boo_Winter-10_Leeds_Rev FINAL.indd 6
22/11/2010 23:57:49
it’ into regaining health and balance. Given on the feet or hands (and sometimes ears), its aim is to help heal the whole person, not just the prevailing symptoms. It does this by working on meridians – or energy lines – found in the hands and feet that correspond to the different parts of the body. Most people find reflexology is a deeply relaxing therapy, just what any parent needs! It has been shown to be effective for conditions including back pain, migraine, infertility, arthritis, sleep disorders, hormonal imbalances, sports injuries, digestive disorders and all stress-related conditions. Janine Bottomley, a member of the Association of Reflexologists and Federation of Holistic Therapists says:
“Reflexology can also provide a great treatment for children. To put the child at ease at first, it can be made into a fun game. From my own experience reflexology can be beneficial for children who bed wet, have ‘glue ear’ or are anxious sleepers. It is always best to consult your practitioner first though as they all have different experiences and ‘specialities’.”
gist should discuss these effects with you and be able to advise you how best to deal with or even avoid them. It is also important to rest and drink plenty of still water after a treatment and, if possible, avoid stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol. A full reflexology session typically takes about an hour. However, the first session is generally longer as it should include a health check beforehand.
Who can benefit from reflexology? People of all ages can benefit from having regular treatments to help keep the body balanced and healthy. It may also bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. Reflexology is safe during pregnancy but some Reflexologists prefer to delay treatments until after the first trimester of pregnancy. Always consult your GP before commencing with any therapy or treatment.
More details Many Reflexologists are registered with the Association of Reflexologists (AoR). This means that they have taken both a written and practical exam to become ‘chartered’. Reflexologists that are members of the AoR also have to show that they continue to develop themselves professionally and work to a consistently high standard. If your Reflexologist is registered with the AoR some health insurance companies will pay a contribution towards reflexology treatments. It might be worthwhile asking them or your Reflexologist for details. Some people may experience a variety of reactions after treatment, all of which show that the body is responding and working to eliminate toxins and heal itself. These may include tiredness, headache, thirst, and changes in bladder or bowel habits and changes in emotional states. Your Reflexolo-

Name the day!
Celebrating the arrival of a new baby
All over the world and throughout history, people have developed ways of celebrating and marking one of the most wonderful moments in life – the arrival of a new baby. Although traditionally, this has generally been a religious ceremony such as a Christening, other types of celebrations are also becoming commonplace. In an increasingly secular and multicultural society where parents may have either different or no religious beliefs, many still want to be able to celebrate the birth of their child without a specific religious element to the day. Laurra Nalty from One Life Ceremonies, a family run business based in Yorkshire, outlines the typical format of a Naming Ceremony. The ceremony is a way to welcome a child into the world and introduce them to their new circle of family and friends. It’s a personal and special occasion that is written individually for a family so they have the opportunity to include exactly what they want. Usually lasting around 20 minutes, the ceremony is
an opportunity to share everyone’s hopes and aspirations for their child’s future and make promises and commitments to them. An example of a promise that parents might make to their child could be: “We promise to love, care and respect you, helping you to grow up to be happy and contented. We will always allow you the freedom to
‘...the ceremony is an opportunity to share everyone’s hopes and aspirations for their child’s future and make promises and commitments to them.’ develop your own personality and identity and will guide you to fulfil all your dreams and ambitions.” Poems and readings are also good to include – parents can choose who and what they would like to read. There are plenty of nonreligious or religious/spiritual ideas to be found on the internet and in books. For a nice personal touch, or if there is a poet in the family, someone may choose to write something specific for the occasion. A popular idea is to feature the meaning of the child’s name and why it was chosen. To mark their naming day, a significant action such as lighting a candle, releasing balloons, planting a tree or raising a toast is always a nice finish. How-
It’s a personal, special occasion that is written individually for a family so they have the opportunity to include exactly what they want. ever, many families simply choose a round of applause which babies, of course, love to join in with. The baby’s close family and friends can be included in the Naming. In a similar way to Godparents during a Christening, Guide Parents can be appointed who can be asked to make a special commitment of support to the child. There is no set amount of Guide Parents for a child, but more than eight would be considered quite a lot – although parents may never be short of a babysitter!

When and where? The ceremony can take place at any age and some parents like to hold it on a child’s first or second birthday so they have had time to settle back into life after the birth. It also a good way to double up the celebration and hold a birthday party afterwards. The ceremony can be held anywhere; at home, in a garden or park, in a community hall or function room, or a restaurant are all good locations.
Who will conduct it? Whilst anyone can conduct a Naming Ceremony, it is usually best to have a professional Conductor of Ceremonies to lead it. They will allow families and guests to enjoy the day without having to take on the responsibility of conducting the ceremony as well.
Here are some suggestions to make the day even more special

Oh no you can’t, oh yes you can! Taking young children to the theatre by Claire Oxley
As the pantomime dames dustoff their wigs for the Christmas season, many parents decide to introduce their little ones to the magic of live theatre. Whether it’s an amateur show at the village hall or an all singing all dancing professional production at a city theatre, it can be a wonderful spellbinding experience that fosters a life-long love of the arts. But is this the right time? Is your child ready? Rather like the urges to decorate the lounge on Christmas Eve and stock pile industrial size jars of pickled onions for Boxing Day, hasty decisions are to be avoided. Take a bit of time to plan this special family event. One of the wonders of young children is their unpredictability but your answers to the following questions should help you to assess their readiness to cope with their first theatre trip. 1. 2.
Can my child sit through a long film at home? Does my child need a lot of toilet breaks?
3.
Is my child sensitive to loud noises?
4.
Will the lighting and movement on stage overwhelm my child?
5.
Is the story familiar and the production age-appropriate?
Setting the scene
Choose a show with a story and characters they know well. My four-year-old son and his friends loved the recent touring productions of The Gruffalo and Charlie and Lola’s Bestest Play. Their familiarity provided the security and confidence to deal with a new environment and sounds. Make your expectations of their behaviour in the theatre clear. Adjust your expectations too – things don’t always go to plan so go with the flow. If it’s a children’s show then the actors and audience are not going to mind a bit of noise. A burp during Hamlet’s soliloquy, however, maybe less welcome.
Show time Act 1: avoid nap times. Many children’s shows are timed for midmorning or choose a matinee.

Act 2: take a few non-crunchy snacks and your child’s favourite quiet toys. Act 3: check the running time and if there’s an interval. Act 4: pop to the loo with your child before the show starts. If they can’t hold it for long, choose your seats accordingly! Final Curtain: It’s wonderful to witness their reactions, such as clapping and calling out, as a new etiquette in theatre-going is learned. Make a day of it and go out for pizza or ice cream afterwards so you can chat about their favourite bits and what a fantastic time you all had.

old affirmed that I wanted to do this for a living. The sense of creativity, invention and positivity was tangible, I couldn’t believe grown-ups did this for a job!
Yorkshire born Robert Shaw Cameron, Associate Director on A Christmas Carol at The West Yorkshire Playhouse, reflects on how involving young people in theatre can teach invaluable life skills.
We now have a Young Company who are playing a significant part of our production of A Christmas Carol at the Playhouse. 26 young people aged 8-16 years play everything from Cratchit children to personifications of Shilling and Pence.
“As a young person, a positive experience in the theatre can shape a life. That was certainly the case for me. Trips to the theatre with my family ignited a flame that flickered brighter the more involved I became as a teenager. I went on to join a theatre group. It’s impossible to overstate how being in a professional rehearsal room at West Yorkshire Playhouse as a 16-year-
There are many creative outlets for young people, from amateur groups to stage schools and participation programmes at large regional theatres. These all provide an environment that engages imagination, communication, collaboration and respect. They may find an outlet in the profession later in life but the vast majority will never set foot on a stage again. But that is not to say they are lost, quite the contrary. The rehearsal environment is a microcosm of most working and

social environments and is invaluable experience for anyone who is exposed to it. 18 years ago, I was part of the Playhouse’s production of a Fiddler on a Roof which starred Beverley Klein. She is back playing Mrs Fezziwig in this production and I am back too, for the first time as a professional and a grown up! We scoured the room in rehearsal last week and tried to spot which member of the Young Company may be back directing or acting here in 18 years time - we think we spotted one.” Robert Shaw Cameron is the Resident Associate Director at The Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Associate Director on A Christmas Carol which runs at The West Yorkshire Playhouse 20 November to 15 January.

Dad zone
With the prospect of sledging, snowballing and making ice skids just around the corner, father of two Matt shares his thoughts on the benefits of letting your child take an element of ‘risk’ in their life. “Don’t walk on the cobbles – you might slip.” I honestly heard a parent say that to her daughter last summer. I was so tempted to splutter a “for goodness sake – why?”, but thought better of it and let them go on their way. It’s stuck with me though, probably because I sit at the other end of the spectrum to that particular parent and was encouraging my eldest (three at the time) to skid as far as he could on the smooth stones. I’m often aware that other grownups in the vicinity are sharply inhaling and uttering silent tut-tuts when I’m around and playing with my boys, but it is very considered ‘play’ as far as I am concerned. They see their parents doing dangerous looking things. For example, we climb, bike, run, canoe. I also run an adventure film festival so the whole family is exposed to all manner of adrenaline sport-based films. So, they are naturally going to want to do the same. By putting my children into a situation that tests and excites them, I believe it aids their understanding of their own abilities in an enjoy-
able way. I’ll admit to being enthusiastic, but would never insist that they do something they really don’t want to do. More than anything, it is more a case of encouraging them to believe that they can have a go, which is possibly the opposite of the parent in the opening paragraph. Looking back, it was obvious that my children had their own internal caution-monitors that told them when to stop – even before they could walk. Sure, they had slips and tumbles, but that was more to do with muscles not working to their full capacity and over exuberance rather than simply doing something daft. We have some very low, foam-based settees and taught both boys how to turn around and slide off them from the age of about six months. From that point on they were always able to get down off chairs, steps and other things safely. They were both early crawlers and walkers, and I think this, combined with the ability to get down from things, led to them learning what was possible, and more importantly, what was not.
Matt Heason lives in the Peak District and pursues a fairly active lifestyle with his wife and children. He also organises the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival and Cliffhanger, two of the region’s biggest events for outdoor-minded folk. For more information visit www.shaff. co.uk | www.cliff-hanger.co.uk
In a kind of positive feedback loop, this then lead to them pushing themselves ever further. But that self preservation instinct is always there. Our eldest is four and a half. He’s been able to swim without any aid for more than a year, but he still doesn’t like being out of his depth as he knows he’s not a strong swimmer. Whilst watching the Commonwealth Games a few weeks ago I asked him if he fancied emulating a certain Tom Daley in the high diving, and the response was both

amusing and illuminating. He said “no thanks, the water is too deep”. Doing somersaults (they’re actually forward rolls, but we haven’t the heart to tell him yet) is clearly all in a day’s play, but he knows that he’d struggle to get out of the pool!

What’s it all about? Class Reviews
In our new regular feature we will be reviewing a few of the local classes so that you get more insight into what goes on before you head along. If you are interested in reviewing a class for Boo please get in touch.
Enjoy-a-Ball
Reviewed by Tom Perigo, aged 9 “At Enjoy-a-ball we play a different sport each week including volleyball, basketball, football, cricket, rugby, tennis, baseball and hockey. Each week the lesson lasts about one hour and we have to do exercises first to stretch and warm up before playing. My teacher Gill is very good at all the sports and has to bring lots of equipment with her like nets and bats with her each week.
All the classes are held in big halls so you run around, play the games and hit and throw the balls high without touching the ceiling. At the end of each lesson you play a mini game like cops and robbers but you also play a game of the sport that you have learnt about that week which was fun. Each lesson there is a star of the week for the best player. I found it fantastic and fun.”
Contact Gill on 07766 712711 for more details or use the voucher on page 35 to book a FREE TRIAL session.
Enjoy-a-Ball, Winner of the Best National Activity for Children aged 5-12 years at the What’s On for Kids 2010 awards, is available in various locations across North Leeds each week. It is also running Christmas camps at Kids Clubhouse, Horsforth from 09.00-13.00 on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 December.

the children just love chasing the bubbles around to music. Nicola is very relaxed and great at engaging the children by explaining each activity to them and making sure that everyone joins in. The atmosphere in class is also quite informal and so children can move around during the session and socialise with others which I think is really important for this age group. We have both made lots of friends since starting Music Bugs and recommend it to all our friends! “
Music Bugs have classes suitable for children from 6 months to 4 years. Sessions run every weekday during term time at various locations across north Leeds. It also runs holiday sessions, so why not use the FREE TRIAL voucher on page 35 to give it a try yourself. For more information contact Nicola on 0844 578 1043 or visit www.musicbugs.co.uk
Music Bugs Reviewed by Erica, Mum of Lottie (2 years) “Lottie loves singing and dancing at home so we decided to look for a local music group and found out (through the diary in Boo!) that Music Bugs were running classes near to where we lived. Lottie and myself both really enjoy the classes. Lottie loves the fact that every week is different and full of surprises as the Class Leader Nicola brings a different selection of props with her to each session and the activities are nicely varied. We tend to focus on a couple of counting songs each week (Lottie’s counting skills have definitely improved!) and then we get to play with various things such as scarves, finger puppets, and parachutes as well as musical instruments - I think that Lottie’s favourites have to be the Hobby Horses or the bubble machine, all

Against the odds
Growth in tuition for children Despite the recession, there has been a growth in the number of school children receiving tuition. More than one in five secondary school children in England and Wales now receive some form of tuition, according to a recent survey by the Sutton Trust. The research also showed that there were significant regional differences in uptake, with over half of London school children receiving extra ‘paid for’ help. So what, despite difficult financial times, is fuelling this growth? Are our schools failing our children now more than ever? Parents who were asked why they decided to pay for tuition stated that they wanted their child to have extra help before a particular examination, or to improve their school work generally. Tuition was
also a must for children trying to achieve places in sought after grammar schools in areas where this system is still in place. It may also be the case that fewer parents are able to afford private school fees and instead opt for tuition alongside a state education. Figures published recently revealed how many comprehensive schools were failing their pupils in English and maths, with hundreds of thousands getting worse grades at 16 than in comparable exams they took at aged 11. According to the latest league tables the majority of children at 965 state secondary schools – almost a third in England – fell behind in either English or maths.
So why are so many parents using tuition to supplement their children’s education? Tutors can be a great addition to our education system. Even where teachers are doing a great job, it’s impossible to have a one-toone rapport with students in the classroom. Tutors are able to focus on their student and cater lessons to suit that individual. Students can therefore obtain a good overall knowledge from experienced teachers, and then use tutors to focus the subject content.
However, it’s not just about getting an A*. Carmen Ellis, who runs the Kumon study centre in Horsforth specialising in maths and English, has the following thoughts on the additional, non-academic benefits of Kumon instruction: C/O Lawns Park Primary School Chapel Lane, Leeds LS12 5EX

“As well as building speed and accuracy, our maths and English programmes develop abilities such as concentration and independent learning, time management and problem-solving: abilities which will prepare students for the future. Parents are increasingly conscious that their child will need more than pure academic skills once formal education finishes so are looking for ways to help their child achieve this – one of the comments we often hear from parents is that they have seen their child’s confidence grow since attending Kumon ” Contact Carmen at Kumon’s Horsforth Study Centre on (0113) 257 1700

You time Let’s Talk , Tweet, Blog or Facebook! by (Mostly) Yummy Mummy
It used to be that parents turned mainly to family, friends and neighbours for all the advice and support they needed about raising a family. However with changes in society and the way we all live our lives, the internet and particularly social networking sites are increasingly becoming a resource that parents rely on - for not only information but friendship too. Here a Leeds based Mummy blogger gives us an insight into how the cyberworld has become part of her life: Being a parent and especially a new one, can often be lonely. Some days it can be hard to find the time to even brush your hair, let alone make plans to go out and meet up with friends. It can be especially difficult if you don’t have friends or family. That’s what I love so much about Twitter and blogging; it fits in whenever and best of all, I don’t even have to brush my hair! If I ever have a worry or concern, I wouldn’t think twice about asking my Twitter pals, it has become such
a huge support to me – and many other parents too. It can be quite difficult to explain to somebody who hasn’t used it before but it really is like having fairies at the bottom of the garden! I feel that I can ask for help without fear of judgement. So many people have been there, done that and are more than happy to offer help or support. Of course I hope I can offer the same support back. I don’t claim to have all of the answers – none of us do – but together we muddle our way through parenting, the highs and the lows. Sometimes it’s just nice to feel like somebody is there to listen and no matter what the time – somebody will always be on Twitter. It is like a virtual coffee morning that never ends.
‘...I feel that I can ask for help without fear of judgement.’ One of the very best things is just how instant it is and you can hop in and out of conversations as and when you can, to fit in with you. It has definitely made parenting a much less lonely place for me. Blogging just became an extension of Twitter in my view I have made so many online friends through blogging and I’m very proud to be part of such a friendly online community. It sounds a little crazy that I would open up and
share my thoughts and feelings with ‘strangers’ out there for the world to see but actually, there is a certain freedom in that. It has become a huge part of my life and I love it! For me, blogging about the minutiae of family life has provided great discussions and above all, a huge support network.
‘...blogging about the minutiae of family life has provided great discussions and above all, a huge support network.’ All this chat on Twitter and blogs which seems so inconsequential can actually be a very powerful tool and it can bring good to people’s lives. Take for instance Blogadesh. at the beginning of September, three of the UK’s top mummy bloggers headed off to Bangladesh to see the work that is done by Save the Children first hand. They spoke to mothers and children about their lives, hopes and fears and shared their experiences on their blogs. Through their campaign, which became known as Blogadesh, they raised awareness and encouraged people to get involved and sign the petition which was to be
