to you! mums who’ve kindly let us in on their families’ favourite recipes – so why not give them a whirl for you and yours? Mary, mum to four girls, has also shared her views on ‘Does punishment work?’ on page 24. Wishing you all a great spring time. Don’t forget to let your friends and family know about Boo, as after all ‘Sharing is caring!’ Happy Easter. Liz
Here at Boo, we are always saying to our children (and each other!) that ‘sharing is caring’. As a magazine which is independently run by mums for mums (and dads), we are constantly seeking interesting ideas of what’s on offer within our local community. We are delighted to tell you all about some of our new friends and partners. Boo has teamed up with The Busy Baby and Toddler Show. Together, we can keep you informed of all the classes, services and child-friendly business here in Leeds. The show offers taster sessions in a variety of classes – many of which are also covered in Boo’s regular ‘What’s it all about?’ page. Many gorgeous products from
local retailers will be showcased at the show giving you the opportunity to talk directly to them. Other key partners include The Leeds Young People’s Film Festival – an annual event screening films made both by and for young people from around the world. We are hugely proud to be the sponsors of the ‘Babes in Arms’ screening on Thursday 31 March at Hyde Park Picture House. Hopefully, many of our readers will be able to head along to the workshops, master classes and film viewings and enjoy a great family outing. Reader contributions are always gratefully received. In this edition, we’ve worked with three local

First Aid Advice for Children from St John Ambulance
According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa), two million children visit Accident and Emergency Departments in the UK every year. However a survey by St John Ambulance found that two out of three people would not know what to do if confronted with a medical emergency. These are worrying statistics, when you consider that 150,000 people (including children) die each year where first aid may have made the difference* Here is some vital life saving advice from St John Ambulance on choking one of the emergency scenarios that frequently involves children:
Choking When an adult or child is choking
Slap it out
with the heel of your hand
• Bend forward and give up to five sharp back blows between her shoulder blades with the heel of your hand
• Check in the mouth for any obstruction and remove – Do not feel blindly down their throat
Squeeze it out
Pump it out
• If the obstruction has not cleared, stand behind them and put both arms around the upper part of the abdomen • Clench your fist and place it between the navel and the bottom of their breastbone • Grasp your fist firmly with your other hand • Pull sharply inwards and upwards up to five times as necessary •If this doesn’t clear the obstruction repeat backslaps and abdominal thrusts up to three times •If it still hasn’t cleared, call 999/112 for emergency help. Continue until help arrives When a baby under one year is choking
Cough it out
Slap it out
• Encourage the person to cough. If this doesn’t clear the obstruction, support their upper body with one hand and help them lean forward
• Lay the baby face down on your forearm supporting their body and chin • Give up to five back blows between their shoulder blades
• If the obstruction has not cleared, turn the baby on their back • Place two fingers on the centre of the infant’s chest and push inwards and upwards sharply against the infants breastbone • Check mouth for any obstruction and remove • Repeat steps 2 and 3 up to five times • If the obstruction is not cleared repeat backslaps and thrusts up to three times • If it still hasn’t cleared, call 999 or 112 for emergency help • Continue until help arrives St John Ambulance runs a wide range of first aid courses from their training centres all over the UK, including Leeds. These include early years first aid and schools first aid as well as emergency first aid at work and many other courses. Austerity Chic Local mum Kirsty Midgley tells us how easy it is to shop on a budget.
As the youngest child from a family of girls I was most definitely the hand me down kid growing up. From clothes to toys to bicycles to boyfriends – I got the lot. Within the larger family and friend circle I was the youngest too so I got all the pass downs from cousins, friends, neighbours and work colleagues. Let me tell you I had the best wardrobe, the nicest clothes, the most toys, more bikes, trikes and walkers than I could every use – being the hand me down kid wasn’t so bad. In a time when prices are rocketing, money is tight and the economy is dipping a good bargain is hard to find but when I had my son a year ago we vowed not to spend hundreds of pounds on baby things we weren’t going to use for that long. We of course bought a handful of new things but from the day I found out I was having a boy we started our great recycling hunt. We looked on the usual second hand sale sites – ebay, netmums, pre-loved, Baby Swap or Shop, we riffled through charity shops, visited countless early morning car boot sales and accepted all hand down gifts – our baby is spoilt. He had a swing chair, two bouncer chairs,
two Moses baskets, a hammock bed, draws and draws of clothes, boxes of toys, carriers, strollers and walkers and we paid practically nothing. He is always well dressed and for the most part in high street labels - I honestly can’t remember the last time I bought something new from the shop. Last week we spent £3.50 and bought a new book, a jigsaw, 2 Thomas the tank engines and a noisy toy from the charity shops on the high street. Last month we paid £15 for a huge bag of 9-12 month clothes at a nearly new sale – baby grows, vests, t-shirts, jeans, jumpers and a very cute superman top. £5 for a huge bag of duplo lego blocks to keep at nana’s house from a car boot sale. And £3.99 for a gorgeous thick red coat from eBay. It’s so easy to find a good deal. And when he grows out of his toys, chairs, swings, carriers we sell them on or hand them down. I can’t tell a lie - not all the stuff out there is good quality but if you take some time to look and go to trusted shops and sales you can get some great bargains. Kids grow so quickly nothing is ever worn out – preloved is the way forward and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
has never been more true. There is nothing more satisfactory than finding something fantastic at just a fraction of the cost Nearly new sales and are growing in popularity with other mums clearly seeing the practicalities of buying and selling second hand goods. The NCT have successfully run children’s nearly new sales for years and this year the Busy Baby Show will be running sales in and around Leeds. In partnership with Boo magazine the Busy Baby Show offers Leeds families a community to find local businesses, local classes and now local bargains. It’s a great way to spend a Saturday morning. And what if you can’t bear to part with that tiny baby grow you brought your bundle of joy home from the hospital in, his first pair of jeans or her first party dress. Don’t let them get stuck at the back of a wardrobe gathering dust local mum Sarah Waldron of The Peanut Tree can turn these treasured memories into quilts and bunting – what a wonderful keepsake to hand down to generations.

Tennis Tots
Reviewed by Liz, mum to Ruby (3) and Lyla (1)
When I told my husband I was taking Ruby along to give Tennis Tots a whirl he was laughing... he has seen me try and play... but thankfully when I arrived at the Tennis Tots session I was immediately reassured by Matt and Shaheed the class leaders that I didn’t need any tennis skills myself so with a wave of relief we got started.
The class started with a warm up, not only getting the children ready for the activities to follow but also getting them working on their numbers, parts of the body and left and right. Then we started the sport - each child worked with their parents, and then with each other under the supervision of the leaders doing throwing and catching exercises -again combined with numercy, balance, sidestepping like a crab (a particular favourite with Ruby) and then some great team work, a relay involving racquets and beanbags went down a storm with all the children and encouraged them to work together to ensure they were the first to shout ‘TENNIS’.
class I have found and engages him from start to finish, which has never happened elsewhere”, Archie’s mum. Tennis Tots is available in various locations across North Leeds each week, see our Weekly Planner for details. Contact Matt on 07725 339257 or take a look www.tennis-tots.co.uk for more information or why not use our free trial voucher on page 35 and give it go.
“I think one of the best things is that they get the children to work in pairs and teams, it teaches them about sharing and working together which at this age is very important”, Maddison’s mum. If you are looking for a class to not only develop their tennis and sporting skills but that is well structured, educational, encourages team work and a sense of discipline then look no further – as one mum said “Tennis Tots is the most rounded

Jo Jingles Reviewed by Kirsty, mum to Harry (1)
We have been going to Jo Jingles since Harry was just 6 weeks old and we both absolutely love it. From the frist class Harry has really engaged with the music and wonderful colourful props. All their classes are age appropriate with special instruments for tiny babies. I loved the special time we had together at classes and Harry loved me singing to him. Now he is older and walking around he loves going to class every week with his Jingling friends. The children all have a ball at classes, they all love getting the instruments out, playing with them and then putting them away, they love wake up shake up songs and dancing and singing along.
Bubbles are a firm favourite as well as Sleeping Bunnies and Sticker TIme - all regulars luckily! Harry loves the parachute and Lycra and especially the 5 little ducks glove. We really look forward to our class every week to see what Jo is will be doing. We even have a Jo Jingles cd in our car and the minute I put the music on he starts bobbing his head and clapping along. Everyone is really friendly in class and Mel the class leader

Dad zone
Eat your greens by David, Father to 2 boys (14 & 3)
My dad used to say to me ‘Eat your greens’ and that was about all he had to say on the subject of food. He was a traditional dinner on the table, meat and two veg kind of guy. I am from the generation where frozen and tinned food was seen to be food of the gods - which is why I sometimes surprise myself with my passion for food particularly for teaching my own children about it. Not just the taste, as we all like a good meal - but trying to teach them where it comes from, what has happened for it to be on their table and how choosing what to eat has a wider impact than whether it tastes nice? Very right on I hear you thinking.. ..Well yes, I am a bit and proud of it. I don’t want to be the dad that turns up at 5.30, eats, sits down and reads the newspaper about depleting resources and increased food miles – I want to show my boys that food choices do matter and it’s never too young to start. Obviously like most boys
The role of ‘dad’ is sometimes overlooked. Playing an equally important role in bringing up their children as mums, Boo’s Dad Zone gives fathers a chance to have their say. If you would like to contribute to the Dad Zone, please email: liz.rhodes@boomag.co.uk
age 14 & two they like pizza, burgers and chips and I’m don’t try and stop them ever eating those kinds of foods. Having seen the sulks a 14 year old can have it really isn’t worth it. Over the years I have introduced them to a wider range of foods my one year old is a huge fan of ‘shells’ (mussels) and olives, which I’m sure I had never heard of until I was at least 25 and to be honest still think are a bit weird.
So it makes me really proud, when I hear my 14 year old asking whether choosing not to hang out at the fast food chains with his mates but go to the quirky local cafe instead, watching Hugh and his Big Fish Fight then getting me to sign the petition online and casually looking at labels on food in the supermarket, that my passion will continue through them.
I mean, I’d be lying if I said I’d never eaten an Egyptian strawberry or South American asparagus but since having my children it has definitely made me think more about what we are putting into our mouths so I decided to take a less traditional approach to male bonding (if you saw me you’d understand why rugby pitches aren’t for me) and make an effort to dedicate time with my boys nurturing foods. From seeds or tiny cuttings into tasty vegetables, baking bread, making ‘concoctions’ of leftovers to try and minimise food waste, explaining why Yorkshire’s famous rhubarb is at its best in Spring not all year round and surprising them

Does punishment work?
Mary Minnock, mum to four ages 13, twins of 10 and 6 shares her views on discipline.
Nowadays, there seems to be general agreement that smacking children is ‘Not a Good Thing’. Most of us can see the lack of logic in the notion that we teach our children to respect and care for others, especially those weaker than themselves, by hitting people smaller than ourselves. But what I am calling into question here is the broader concept of punishment – confiscation of objects, time out, humiliation, grounding, suppression of privileges etc. I’m sure there is no parent alive who has not been pushed to the end of his or her patience by their child’s behaviour and I suspect that there aren’t many of us who, in the privacy of our own conscience, could say that they have not reacted excessively at one time or another. Luckily for us, children are incredibly good at forgiveness and are almost always willing to wipe the slate clean in exchange for a hug, a kiss or even a chocolate biscuit!
However, can considered and temperate punishment work? Over the years I have moved closer to the opinion that it does not. I never felt good about punishment, it made me unhappy, the children unhappy and, most importantly of all, I could see no improvement in behaviour afterwards. So I started to investigate the evidence for the effectiveness of punishment and there is surprisingly little of it, given the widespread acceptance by parents of its necessity. In psychological terms, there are three main ways to change behaviour: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement and punishment. Positive reinforcement strengthens a particular behaviour by rewarding people e.g. winning a medal or award will encourage a person to try even harder in that activity. Negative reinforcement also strengthens a behaviour because a negative condition is stopped
or avoided as a consequence of the behaviour e.g. when a headache disappears after taking aspirin this reinforces the tendency to take it. Punishment, on the other hand, works very differently. Its aim is to weaken a behaviour because a negative condition is introduced or experienced as a consequence of the behaviour e.g. A bad mark at school results in no television. There is no doubt, numerous research studies prove it, that positive reinforcement is by far the most effective way to change behaviour. The problem with punishment is that while it might change behaviour in the immediate term, it does not point children towards any specific new behaviour and so does not provide guidance. Often punishment can result in unwanted outcomes such as concealing marks so as to avoid punishment. So why do so many parents believe in punishment? In my
Spring 2011 New Boo_Spring 11_final.indd 24
18/02/2011 10:18
opinion, it is because it puts the onus for change on the child. Punishment is based on the principle that the child’s natural instinct is to misbehave, to subvert the parental rules, to thwart the desires of the parent. Punishment creates barriers around the child’s freedom, imposing a certain way of behaving on him, thereby protecting the parent. A mentality of opposition between parent and child is created where the interests of one are in direct opposition to the interests of the other.
On the contrary, it means that the parent is required to be even more vigilant. Bad behaviour calls attention to itself naturally but often it takes effort and observation to catch the child in the act of good behaviour so that it can be praised and encouraged. And praise and encouragement is amply sufficient reward for a child for good behaviour. This creates an expected norm of kindness, mutual respect and consideration with all misbehaviour being an aberration.
And yet common sense tells us that we are all strongly motivated to be liked and approved of, especially by those we respect and love the most. This is no less true for children. Once we believe that their natural instinct is to please their parents, to do what it takes to be loved and respected by them, then punishment is no longer relevant. If children are behaving badly, then perhaps the appropriate way to behave has not been communicated clearly enough to them. The reasons for this may be that the child is not mature enough to understand the message, the parent may be giving mixed signals, expectations may be too high, the parent may be too stressed or occupied to devote the time to effective communication. But whatever the reason, it does mean that the parent needs to call into question their own role in the relationship and perhaps modify their own behaviour, not always an easy thing to do.
This is the status quo, but in practical terms how do we handle those situations where the child’s behaviour becomes unacceptable? I will divide the behaviour to two types, one where the child ignores requests to do something because there is something else they would rather do and one where they actively behave badly such as hitting another child or answering their parent rudely. In the first case, if a child is asked several times to put on his shoes or set the table to no avail it may be because they are too small to understand the need for getting to school or work on time or how it might be nice to eat your meal while it’s hot. A trick I find useful is to count to five. The aim is not to say that something terrible will happen at five but rather to communicate the speed at which I would like the action to happen. As there is no anger involved, it’s possible then to say thank you for the effort.
Eliminating punishment does not mean that ‘anything goes’.
In the second case where the bad behaviour is active, the most effective way is often to
The free lifestyle magazine for you and yours New Boo_Spring 11_final.indd 25
show disappointment at this out-of-character behaviour. Just as praise and approval is sufficient (sweets and gifts are not necessary) to reinforce good behaviour so disappointment is enough to show the unacceptability of bad behaviour. As a rule of thumb, praise should outweigh criticism by at least five to one.

in conjunction with Babes in Arms screening at Hyde Park Picture House
We all know how difficult it can be to get a night off to go and see a great film. So in conjunction with The Leeds Young People’s Film Festival we are offering you the chance to head along with your babies and toddlers to this years Boo sponsored Babes in Arms screening: ‘The Secret of Kells’- Thursday 31 of March 11.00 at Hyde Park Picture House. The Leeds Young People’s Film Festival caters for families and young people of all ages, ensuring that young parents and carers are not excluded from enjoying international film that they may be unable
to discover elsewhere. Each year they present a Babes in Arms screening where they provide an embarrassment free environment, where parents and carers can relax and enjoy a film, whilst babies and toddlers are free to be themselves. Baby changing and bottle warming facilities are provided, alongside free tea and coffee for grown ups. This year’s Babes in Arms Screening is of the spellbinding animation for all ages, The Secret of Kells on Thursday 31 March at 11.00 in Hyde Park Picture House. The Secret of Kells draws on Celtic mythology and illuminated manuscripts, to tell a magical tale of faith and
imagination in dark times. In a remote medieval outpost of Ireland, young Brendan embarks on a new life of adventure when a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands carrying a book brimming with secret wisdom and powers. To help complete the book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide. Tickets for the screening can be bought by calling City Centre Box Office on 0113 224 3801, by visiting www.leedsyoungfilm. com or in person at The Carriageworks on Millennium Square (babies and toddlers free).

1. Cut a length of appropriatelysized string for your bunting to be attached to. 2. Take some sheets of A4 or larger paper, fold in half and then draw some triangle shapes. 3. Use the fold of the paper as the base of the triangle so that when you cut the shapes out you’ll have a diamond shape which can be folded in two again to ‘sit’ on the string.
4. Draw the outline of the Union Jack flag , colour in the flag like the one below on each side of the folded triangle shapes. Then place them on the string to make
your bunting. If you are having a party get each child to colour in one flag and string them all together.

GUNNER COLLIER’S MANDOLIN ‘OLD SOLDIER’ SHARES HIS MUSICAL TALENTS WITH THE YOUNGER GENERATION AS PART OF NEW COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA Old soldier and former prisoner-of-war Bernard Collier aged 90, of Alwoodley in Leeds, is sharing his musical talents with the younger generation as part of a new community orchestra. The orchestra is one of two new groups, a choir and orchestra, which are recruiting adults and children over seven years of age in the Alwoodley area. Bernard, who joined the Territorial Army back in 1937 before being called up to serve in World War II, started playing the violin aged just seven and was the leader of the third violin section of the Orchestra in Colchester by the age of 13.
most popular events, the skies above Harewood will be awash with colour and there’s a feast of kite related activities and events for all the family to enjoy, including a visit by The

He went on to learn clarinet in a military band and even played with Billy Cotton’s Big Band Show in London. Whilst training for desert warfare in Palestine he took up the saxophone but it was after being captured by the Germans and sent to a prisoner of war camp in Italy that he discovered his favourite instruments – the mandolin and the mandola.
Now Bernard is sharing his skills with the younger generation by playing the mandola, which has a slightly deeper sound than the mandolin. The Extended Services Leader for Alwoodley in Leeds, Julie Cooke, who has been instrumental in setting up the orchestra, is delighted that he wants to take part:
Speaking from his home in Alwoodley, where he now cares for his wife, Bernard said: “Music is one of the most important aspects of my life. It’s got me into trouble and out of trouble and at one point it probably saved my life.”
“We discovered a lot of interest in singing and music and we came up with the idea of a community orchestra and choir which would attract people of all ages” she said. “It’s fantastic that people of Bernard’s age and experience want to get involved – he has so much to offer.”
As an intern in one of the first prisoner-of-war camps in Italy there was very little to occupy the prisoners. Bernard’s fellow prisoner, an RAF Sergeant, wrote to the International Red Cross in Geneva requesting musical instruments – which arrived in a crate one month later. The POWs also used money they had accumulated to buy mandolins, guitars, a cello and a piano accordion from a local town. From that point on Bernard was involved in teaching the other POWs to play and they learned Italian tunes and songs which they performed for the Italian Officers, calling themselves “The Mandoliers”.
If you are interested in joining either the choir or the orchestra simply turn up on a Wednesday evening at Allerton Church of England Primary School, Lingfield Approach, Leeds LS17 7HL. The orchestra runs from 5pm-6pm and you must be able to read music, have passed at least Grade1 music exams and have your own instrument. The choir runs from 6.30pm-7.30pm and both groups are free. The project has been funded by The Big Lottery
