If you have experience in sales, marketing, teaching, training, nursing or have held a supervisory or management position and would like to earn a full time income working part-time from home, I would love to hear from you.

My own three children were born in the early seventies and I thoroughly enjoyed being a Dad. I did all I could to help around the house and with them, while holding down a fulltime responsible job. I now see my son and son-in-law being as involved as I was and taking great delight in being with their children. I now have lots of fun with these littlies, reading to them, singing nursery rhymes, making biscuits, blowing bubbles. As a Granddad I appear to be the fount of all knowledge, being able to answer any question, knowing how everything works and being able to make anything out of odds and ends. One of these days they’ll catch me out! Our children, when they were old enough, could and did play outside without adult

supervision. Unfortunately in today’s society it doesn’t seem likely that my grandchildren will be able to do this. But their parents encourage them to get out into the fresh air as often as possible, to use up some of their boundless energy in the garden or in the park, rather than sitting in front of the tv all the time. Even so I am getting quite au fait with Peppa Pig, Dora the Explorer, Upsy Daisy, and all the characters from Toy Story!

it is 10,000 times better than I hoped. Being a Granddad is just as good as being a Dad but less tiring, because as is often saidat the end of the day you can hand the children back to their parents!

Our children were raised to be good citizens, always to consider others and, if possible, to help anybody who needed help. I am delighted that they and their spouses are instilling the same ideas and values into our grandchildren. I am delighted to see the children’s broad smiles of welcome when we arrive at their houses, or to hear the shouts of ‘Hello Gran and Granddad’ when they come to us. I enjoy knowing that they can, and do, trust me to do my very best for them, just as their parents trusted me. I think that ‘Granddad’ is my favourite word and hope that my grandchildren will always want to come and see us and ask ‘Granddad, do you know...’ or ‘Granddad can you help...’ I always thought that being a Granddad would be special and

You Time Creating harmony in your relationship As a counsellor Tara Fox has helped couples and individuals for over 10 years to create harmony in their lives. Couples can direct so much energy into their children without reviewing their relationship leaving unresolved issues to work through later on. The following suggestions relate to communication and willingness to care for oneself

Every relationship needs tweaking as it enters a new life stage. Renegotiate your daily routine – When it’s off balance resentment starts to build. Couples are often so tired they have no energy left to reflect on what’s going wrong and to make practical changes to daily routines. Men may feel at the bottom of the list of a mum’s priorities and mums may quickly feel overburdened by responsibilities they have fallen into doing by themselves. If this is happening it’s time to discuss

what can be renegotiated. All routines are breakable and every relationship needs tweaking as it enters a new life stage. What about me? – Suddenly you are almost never alone. It’s important in rebuilding your identity to do something unrelated to children. An exercise class, a singing group, a training course for example that gives you something to feel good about yourself as an individual. You are a parent and you are an exceptional individual too with a right to your own interests away from the home. Parenting Skills – Both you and your partner bring a set of experiences from your own childhood with you into your relationship. It might seem strange to you that your partner insists on the children being active at the weekends until you discover that as a child she or he was left alone a lot yearning to be played with. Once you sit down and

discuss the meaning behind why it’s important to each of you that certain things need to happen in your family it makes sense, enabling you to have more empathy for each other and to compromise. There is an inner child within us who needs empathy not criticism. Ask for what you need – This stems from a myth that partners should know what you want and to ask means the relationship is unsuitable or at best a disappointment. To ask for what you want actually empowers your relationship because it cuts through games often played out within relationships to test its value. Instead of believing your partner does not care because they never do x ask them if they would do this, explaining why it’s important to you. You are worthy of love and of being loved in the way that you need. Managing Extended Family Visits from grandparents and wider family at the weekend can be great but challenging if

Autumn 2011

you begin to feel you don’t have time together with your partner and children on your own. You might say something like “we have planned to go out just the three of us this weekend but next weekend it would be lovely to get together with you all”. It is your right to choose to have time alone with your partner and children at the weekend.

You have the right to spend time alone as a couple

Time Together – Although this takes effort to organise it’s worth it. Children find it interesting to be looked after by a different trusted adult and this is setting up a healthy ability to relate to others. Remind yourselves what you used to enjoy doing together and plan a day or evening out for you as a couple. This keeps you in emotional contact so you can feel connected to your partner. You could take turns in deciding what to do or surprise each

other. You have the right to spend time alone as a couple and its essential for a healthy relationship. Choosing the Right School School applications must be in by 15th November for Leeds Council schools, so before you send off the form and sit and wait in anticipation Collette Bradbury, a mother and secondary school English teacher with 15 years experience gives some sage advice on what to look for in a good school: It’s that time of year again. Thousands of anxious children (and their even-more-anxious parents) are about to launch themselves onto the merry-goround that is choosing a school. For a lucky few, this is a smooth, straightforward, angst-free ride. For the rest of us, it’s potentially stressful for parent and child alike. So, where to start? My recommendation (as someone who has sat on both sides of this fence) is to approach the decision using a rather unscientific combination of published factual data and gut instinct. Admission to primary and secondary schools is not automatic. All schools have ‘admissions criteria’ which they use to allocate places. Details of admissions criteria, along with figures showing the number of applications schools received the previous year, are listed in school prospectuses. Finding out as much as you can will

Top tips for negiotiating the school minefield

help you to make an informed decision about which schools to apply to. Ask yourself what you and your child need from a school and start gathering information early. Firstly, the boring obvious stuff. League tables. It would be idiotic and naive not to look carefully at the league table results for all the schools you are considering (and some of those you aren’t). They are easily accessed online (BBC is a good place to start). However, one would be equally misguided to rely solely on this information when making a choice. Often (as I experienced), two or three of the schools under consideration will have remarkably similar results. It is therefore, crucial to consider the aptitude and interests of your child too, matching school

facilities and specialisms to your childs interests and skills. Find out what matters to them. You might not agree, but it’s important to talk about where they would like to go. This may be more relevant when your child is older and you are choosing a secondary school. Where are their friends going? Starting a new school can be daunting, and having one or two close friends there can help. Also consider your family’s needs: would you prefer a school which can offer access to afterschool childcare? All children are different, and you may find that the school with the best reputation is not necessarily the best choice for your child. The most valuable thing to do is to visit the schools. All of them. Yes, you can forget Dr Who or Mad Men. This autumn you will be embarking on a true test of endurance, a marathon of tours around a variety of schools, marvelling at art displays, interactive poetry workshops and film editing suites. This can be very revealing (often in ways that the school has not anticipated!) and gives you an opportunity to make direct comparisons. However, a few cautionary words are needed at this point. Prospective Parents Evening is one of those big annual events that many schools have got down to a fine art. They are

Autumn 2011

putting on a show and they take this opportunity very seriously. Try to see past the polished floors and the smiling Head Boy, even the amazing facilities. The most important asset the school has to offer your child is the staff. How they respond to you and your child may well help you both to decide between two similar schools. This is of course especially important if your child has any special educational needs or a particular skill or talent. Do the staff in this area respond with empathy, understanding and expertise? Are you reassured by what they can offer your child? Talk to the students who are there acting as guides. They are generally extremely honest (even if inadvertently!) Are they proud and enthusiastic about their school? In addition to this, I made a point of visiting promising schools for a second time. Ask whether you can visit the school during ordinary business hours. You will get much more insight into the day-to-day working atmosphere of the school. It may well be louder than we remember from our school days, but are students purposeful and engaged? They might actually be enjoying themselves! Do staff teach with their doors open? Observe routine exchanges between staff and students and between staff

and staff. Most Head teachers will gladly welcome you under these circumstances. If he or she doesn’t, that might raise some questions. It’s also useful to observe the school from a distance for a little while. Watching students leaving the school premises at the end of the day can tell you a lot. Brace yourself, it will be a stampede. However, what kind of a stampede are you seeing. If the streets and pavements are suddenly invaded by groups of vaguely threatening angry teenagers in a state of semi-undress, then perhaps this gives some clues to the working relationships inside the building. Although this can be an intense and fraught time in a young

The free lifestyle magazine for you and yours

person’s life, I hope these suggestions have offered you all a light at the end of the tunnel. It will soon be over and you can always watch Mad Men on the iPlayer. “A school is only ‘good’ if it offers the values you want for your child. When you visit the school talk to the staff, other parents and most importantly the pupils, to find out if their ethos is everything you would want from a school. Talking to pupils will give you a feeling for how they see the school, only then will you know whether your child will be happy and settled there.” Jane Disley, Headmistress of Richmond House School, Headingley.

Taking the perfect photo

How to capture those precious moments like a pro Location - make life easy for yourself, outside is good, avoid bright sunshine, softer light from shaded areas create much nicer skin tones plus avoids squinting and is more comfortable for the subjects. If you are inside, try to have as much light available as possible and use your flash carefully, direct flash from your camera creates harsh, contrasty lighting but is fast and easy to use. If possible bounce the flash off a white surface, for example, the ceiling and a wall behind the camera angle. If your flash cannot be bounced, try a little white tissue over the flash, it will reduce the flashes power but soften the light and make for more flattering tones.

We have all seen those cringeworthy family portraits with 80’s perms and shoulder pads adorning peoples walls, we may even feature in one! But with the digital age it’s now much easier to capture those little expressions that really do bring so much pleasure for many many years. Life changes, people change and it is so important to record these unrepeatable times. We spoke with Mark Swinford, one of Yorkshire’s leading portrait photographers, he offers some tips to help you capture those priceless moments. Try to choose a time to create your family portrait when your baby/child is at its happiest, this sounds obvious but you would be surprised how many people try and do it when a little one is due for a feed or a nap! You really want the odds to be stacked in your favour not against. Clothing - choose plain simple clothes that work well together and are not fashion statements! Remember it’s the person in the portrait that’s important and imagine looking at the image 10 years on, if its in fashion now, chances are it will be unfashionable then and we have all got pictures of ourselves taken years back that we cringe at what we wore!!

Portraits make wonderful Christmas gifts.

As a special offer to all Boo readers, Mark Swinford Photography is offering you a chance to win a wall portrait worth £475

The free lifestyle magazine for you and yours

Posing - Keep it simple, keeping your subjects heads as close as possible, not square on to the camera but at angles create, more flattering and interesting shapes, this will also give your portrait a feeling of closeness and avoids having distracting backgrounds, remember you are capturing the people not the background! Triangle shapes within your poses make for a composition that is pleasing to the eye. Expression - This is arguably the most important part of any portrait and requires the most skill. The person taking the portrait needs to communicate with the subject, coaxing out a relaxed natural expression, avoid asking the subject to smile or say “cheese” this usually gives a really false look. Always have your finger on the cameras shutter release and be ready to take the picture, watch the subject and when you see a suitable expression, take it quickly. Use a few carefully selected items that will help bring out those expressions and add individuality to the portrait, a favourite teddy, toy or book where appropriate. Finally practice - practice and practice, take lots of images and have lots of fun, display your images and enjoy them, don’t just keep them on your hard drive.

Tickety Boo Health & Fitness

The best start Yoga really does work wonders! After the ten week YogaBugs Impact and Change programme, staff at Bradford’s Ryecroft Primary School have seen some startling results in the physical ability and behaviour of the school’s Year 3 pupils. Head Teacher Jayne Clarke has seen real improvement in concentration in lessons, an overall increase in self confidence and the school’s gymnastic team’s performance has also improved due to better balancing skills.

photo credited to Roger Moody

But for one of those Year 3 pupils, the effects have been far reaching. Eight year old Rhys Shields (pictured below) has suffered from Hypophosphatasia (a mineral

deficiency leaving bones weak and prone to injury) since he was twelve months old. His mother Carol commented, ‘For most of his life I have wrapped him in cotton wool. He couldn’t play with other children, ride a bike or jump on a trampoline’. Physiotherapy has helped Rhys’ muscle strength but Rhys has found those exercises repetitive and he can not do them with his friends. That is where YogaBugs Yorkshire’s ten week Impact and Change programme comes into its own. The yoga postures are woven into fun adventures

‘The yoga postures are woven into fun adventures’ such as blasting off to the moon or sailing the high seas with pirates. Rhys and his peers have fun as well as benefiting from the yoga! Having completed the course, Rhys went to see his physio and she said his condition had improved by 60 – 70%. The Impact and Change course also provides basic training in breathing and relaxation exercises for the school class teacher to ensure sustainability, so that pupils across the school can benefit from these simple exercises being built into lesson time. explains that the yoga programme has given ‘children and staff a space and time in the crowded curriculum to concentrate, to feel calm and to reflect. The learning journeys they have experienced in YogaBugs are helping them immensely with their language for learning and life. Their self esteem has grown and they have become more confident and assertive learners. It has been a very valuable programme and we hope to continue to benefit from it in the future’. YogaBugs Yorkshire provides classes for children from when a child first starts walking, right through to 12 years. The classes take place in a variety of community, school and nursery settings. Please visit www.yogabugs. com for all details and to book on line. MiniBugs classes for ‘walking’ to 2 years are new for this autumn.

Diddi Dance

Reviewed by Jenny and Kirsty, mum to Harry (18mths)

12 excited children wearing brazilian inspired green and yellow kits pour into a large hall and begin to kick small yellow footballs around the space. To the side are brightly coloured pieces of equipment including domes, cones, hoops, beanbags and skittles. Coach Jenny calls the class into action, and so begins a typical session at Socatots Wharfedale. Socatots is already proving popular with classes running in Guiseley, Otley and Ben Rhydding. Jenny explains that the numbers are limited to 12 per class to ensure that each child gets individual help and attention throughout the class. As the session develops the children are taught how to warm up safely before doing some skills work with the domes and balls, followed by plenty of fun and games, and finally a cool down with the ever popular parachute. At the end of the class each child gets a Socatots sticker to wear proudly on their top, and leaves tired out but happy! Kirsty, mum to Harry who is one and a half has been attending classes for a term now, “Harry

has the best time at Socatots. He is so excited about putting on his kit and meeting his new friends. I love that they look like a little team!” “Harry runs around and kicks and really lets off steam but then gets home at night and can show my husband perfectly how to kick the ball with the side of his foot and can do all the warm up excercises - he takes so much in. We love Socatots classes.”

For more information on Socatots Wharfedale, or to book a free taster session please call Jenny on 07872 136925, email j.white@socatots.com, or have a look at the Socatots Wharfedale page on Facebook.

I headed along to Diddi Dance with an amount of trepidation as my 3 year old has already been to ballet classes but gave up very quickly, finding them too strict and formal for her. So I was more than pleasantly surprised, when from the moment the gregariousYB-RF-ADVERT-S-020811.pdf class leader Fiona started, my daughter was totally

engaged and followed Fiona’s lead all the way through the lesson. And what an exciting time she had too – moonwalking like an alien, dancing with ribbons, more traditional ballet moves, shaking her pom poms and 1 trying 02/08/2011 10:26 hard to keep her hula hoop spinning.

Fiona got the children working together as a group but also ensured she gave them all individual words of encouragement and with children of varying ages and attention spans that’s not an easy task. Diddi Dance suited my little one down to the ground, the controlled yet lively, informal atmosphere allowed her to dance and have fun whilst learning – in my eyes a great balance. And and my alien moonwalking was pretty impressive too.

Recipe Swap Cranberry Banana Bread As you know here at Boo we are passionate about supporting local businesses so let us introduce you to Lisa aka The Yummy Yank who we met at Bramhope Farmer’s Market – her cakes were so delicious we asked her to share her secrets and some of her favourite American style recipes with us:

Sweet Potato Pie makes one 9” pie Baking Time : 45 minutes

Ingredients 4 medium sized sweet potatoes (orange flesh), cooked until soft and then peeled. 3 eggs, lightly beaten

5. Pour into the pie crust and bake for 45 to 55 minutes or until the filling is set and a knife inserted into the centre comes out clean. 6. Let cool completely before slicing and serving. If desired, add a dollop of fresh whipped cream, a scoop of vanilla ice cream or pouring cream before serving.

2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional) 4 ounces / ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)

2. Grease pan. Mix sugar and butter together in a medium mixing bowl until completely blended.

4. Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the centre of the loaf comes

out clean and is golden brown. Remove to cooling rack and allow to cool in pan for about 10 minutes. Remove from pan and cool completely. ** 200 grams / 6 ounces / 1 cup chocolate chips can also be added to the batter at the same time as the cranberries if desired for extra yumminess!**

Tennis Tykes for under 5s smashes government targets on physical activity and early learning goals The government has recently launched new guidelines for under 5s advising at least 3 hours of physical activity a day and this advice comes amid growing concern about levels of childhood obesity and new research linking a lack of physical activity with poor brain development and social interaction. The good news, is that even over the winter months when it’s harder for children to get outside and participate in active play, Tennis Tykes is

providing lots of opportunities locally for children. This indoor educational tennis skills and play programme for the 2-5 year old age group follows the government’s Early Years Foundation Stage and the little tykes all easily exceed the physical learning goals as they exhibit great balance, movement control and co-ordination and the ability to handle and operate the tennis equipment well. Tennis Tykes has been running successful classes across Yorkshire from May and due to
