Health & fitness Tummy Time by Kate Chauhan Clinical Specialist Orthotist As a new mum you are given a mountain of advice whilst dealing with a complete change of lifestyle and lack of sleep. One of the messages not getting through is the importance of tummy time and how it is important for early development and preventing flat head syndrome.
What is Flat head syndrome? This is when the shape of the head changes over time due to external pressure on the skull. This may cause the head to be flattened straight across the back (brachycephaly), to one side (plagiocephaly) or a combination of both. Now estimated to affect 1 in 30 babies due to ‘back to bed’ and increased use of car seats. If you notice these changes you need to start repositioning your baby as soon as possible to remove the pressure on the flattened side. But really tummy time should be an important part of your daily routine. Try the following: • Place your baby on their tummy, when awake and supervised. Start with a couple of minutes and build up. good time is after nappy changes. The tummy time mats and cushions are useful. • Limit time in car seats and baby bouncers, use slings and baby carriers instead where possible.
• Alternate the way your baby lies in the cot.
These are unfortunately not available on the NHS, but are available privately. There is usually a free assessment and scan so that the best advice can be offered.
• If your baby prefers to look one way see your GP or health visitor to check for torticollis.
“It is estimated to affect 1 in 30 babies now due to ‘back to bed’ and increased use of car seats.” If your baby is between 4-18 months and has moderate to severe plagiocephaly or brachycephaly and repositioning has not helped, there are cranial remoulding helmets such as STARband that gently correct the shape of the head.

Food
The glorious sunshine and patriotic celebrations made us feel very British here at Boo, so we’ve given you some Afternoon Tea recipes for Summer. We spoke to Lisa Hamilton from Café Village in Calverley.
Scones
“Afternoon tea would not be complete without homemade scones, and for me it has to be strawberry jam with lashings of clotted cream. This is a great recipe that we use at Café Village and it’s so simple you can even let the kids have a go. And only 20mins from start to finish”
Method 1. Lightly grease baking tray. 2. Sieve the flour, sugar and salt into a mixing bowl and rub in the butter until it resembles breadcrumbs. 3. Stir in the raisins. Add the beaten egg. 4. Reserve 1 table spoon of the milk for glazing, and then add the rest to the mixture. Mix to form soft dough. 5. On a floured surface roll out the dough 2cm thick and cut out 8 scones using 5cm cutter. 6. Place scones on to tray and brush with milk. 7. Bake in preheated oven 220c/425f gas mark 7 for 8-10minutes 8. Remove and place on a cooling rack.

To market, to market to buy a... Discover the delights of Leeds Kirkgate Market with Nick Copland from The Source
The family shopping trip is a regular, if not always inspiring and enjoyable outing. Of course the modern supermarket has gone out of its way to make it easier, less stressful and efficient. Supermarkets give you a simple layout, huge trollies, pre-packed foods that are easy to identify, grab and go, fast-food, whole aisles of toys… It is a process that can be completed without the need to speak to anyone, or come into direct contact with either the food or the people who sell it. But there is a fabulous, exciting, adventurous, occasional alternative.
“Going to a real market is an exciting, sensory experience.” I am a huge fan of shopping at Leeds Kirkgate Market, but as a busy dad, I am also aware that it may pose some of its own challenges. So I thought I would help Boo readers get more out of a visit to the market Going to the supermarket is actually quite dull for kids (and adults too). However going to a real market is an exciting, sensory experience. The sights are colourful and varied, stalls
piled high with heaps of fruit and vegetables, extraordinary fresh fish, live lobsters and razor clams, the sounds of traders calling out special offers, the banter between the regulars and stall holders, the smell of the flowers and the spices… In the market you can see the butchers preparing cuts of meat, the fishmongers always display a wonderful variety of seafood and whole fish, as well as more familiar cuts, there are stalls dedicated to eggs and even tripe. And as for the fruit and vegetables, alongside the apples and pears are moolis, yams, scotch bonnet chillis, fresh mustard leaves, even okra, cassava and plantains… It can be a real education…
Leeds Kirkgate Market is the largest covered market in Europe, with over 400 stalls selling everything from everyday staples like fresh vegetables, locally farmed meat and the freshest fish and flowers, to household goods, branded groceries, and more exotic fare from the many continental delis, Polish and Chinese shops. There is a wonderful array of fabrics and household goods too, perfect for any project!
Traders love the fresh, the seasonal, the best quality and love to share that with their customers – and that means you can easily find out what the best produce is for the time of year. Buying loose fruit, fresh cuts of meat and fish, lets you avoid unnecessary packaging. Make sure you take a nice, big, sturdy shopping bag with good, softgrip handles to make it easier to carry everything.

The Source is a new stall located at the top of the market, at one of the main entrances to the market in the historic 1904 Hall. It acts as a meeting point, information desk, and is often open for tastings, testings and demos of foody fare… The Source has developed a new, simple food map – specially designed to help you find what you need quickly and without getting too lost (we all enjoy a bit of randomness in our lives, but not too much!). Shopping at Leeds Kirgate Market is a wonderful experience. You’ll love the bargains and banter, children will love the hustle and bustle
of the market, they like to see the many colourful products and meet the traders. You may not swap your supermarket for Leeds Kirkgate Market entirely, but a visit to this amazing place doubles up as a fun excursion as well as a refreshing way to buy great food!
3. Use The Source map – it connects all the foodie places in the market.
Five top tips for making a visit to Leeds Kirkgate Market fun
5. Make sure you find time for a sit down and a cuppa – there are lots of great little cafes in the market – ideal for a little rest and a snack.
1. Take cash – few if any of the traders have card machines. 2. Aim for a few specific things, and grab a few more spur of the moment items along the way.

4. Tell the traders what you want, and ask their advice – they have a wealth of knowledge about cooking and food – some even like to share recipes.

The importance of touch
Mary Minnock, mother of four, and writer, expresses her thoughts on the sense of touch and its importance in our children’s lives.
Until the 1940s very little research had been done on touch. Of the five senses it is the most difficult to measure its influence because skin,
Babies are made for cuddling. Their fat cheeks are irresistible kiss-traps, every chubby nook and cranny is a temptation to bury our noses in. I hope I’m not the only mother who has dropped a big smacker of a kiss on her baby’s bum only to wonder afterwards if this is an appropriate way to behave.
our largest organ, covers all our bodies and provides us with a continuous flow of information about the world around us. In 1945-1947, Dr Rene Spitz explored out why so many babies in orphanages
consistently withered away and died despite being provided with food, shelter and hygienic conditions. He concluded that emotional deprivation was the cause. In the 1960s, Harry Harlow conducted his famous research using baby rhesus monkeys and found that the affectionate touch of their mothers was
There is a good reason why it’s hard to keep our hands off our babies. It’s because nature is well-designed; it encourages us to give to our children what they need most. It is hard to overestimate the importance of affectionate touch in a child’s development. Touch is the first sense that develops in the foetus and is the most important sense for a baby in helping him to understand the world. Newborns fall peacefully to sleep, skin to skin, even when their position looks incredibly uncomfortable to an observer, only to wake and cry when the gentlest attempt is made to transfer them to a cot. Older babies automatically transfer all objects to their mouth, not to taste them, but to feel them with their mouth. Autumn

even more important to baby monkeys than food and that those monkeys deprived of touch suffered serious brain damage and were unable to reintegrate into society in an appropriate way. In 1975 James Prescott presented the evidence for his theory that there is a link between those societies with low levels of physical affection and high levels of violence. He argued persuasively that when affectionate touch is thwarted it turns into violence. This may be the brain damage in human beings that Harlow observed in touch-deprived monkeys. Despite our deep innate hunger to be touched, society has increasingly frowned on ‘excessive’ touching, for fear of making children overly dependent or turning boys into sissies. Are we going too far with our restrictions? We are not receptive to affectionate touch at all times and this is true for children too. There are times we want to be held and caressed and there are times when we want to be left alone. What is important is for parents to be receptive to their children’s needs and provide for them appropriately. Just as children appreciate food when they are hungry, so too do they appreciate being touched when they are ready.
I am an enthusiastic supporter of breastfeeding but it is my personal belief that although much is made of the immunising virtues of breastmilk, the real benefit comes from the extended contact between mother and baby and the feeling of wellbeing that this provokes in both. I’m not sure if any research has been done on babies fed purely on expressed breastmilk but I suspect that the benefits would be much less than for a baby fed directly from the breast. Our need for affectionate touch does not wane as we grow up. We all yearn to be touched lovingly throughout our lives. Boys and teenagers are two categories who have a higher risk of touch-deprivation because society discourages the ‘molly-coddling’ of boys and because teenagers tend to turn away from the touch of their parents and are more attracted by their peers but society frowns on much teenage sexual/ affectionate behaviour.

As with most parenting issues, there is no rule for affectionate touch which can be universally applied. The key is to be receptive to our children and understand that it’s a difficult dance whose steps change all the time requiring us to advance and retreat in time to our own instincts.
Freud proposed the theory that maternal attachment developed because the mother provided food for the baby and so the baby learned to associate the positive aspects of feeding with their mother. However, since then research has shown that affection far outweighs food in importance for a baby.

Culture Kitchen Reviewed by Brenda, Noah and his cousin Ethan. I was intrigued at the concept…. children, food, learning, culture and cooking. Could such a concoction work? To test this out, I brought along my son and my nephew both nearly three years old. The result is that one loved it and one didn’t get involved enough to appreciate it. Of course I could have guessed which one would take to it and which one won’t so much. My son is a mini action man so I will probably look for a more activity based outlet for him but his cousin loved it! The session started with each child positioned in front of a tray of ingredients and all the utensils needed to make the selected country’s dish….Mexico and cheese and veg quesadillas. The big people need to be on hand to assist but, just in case, there were some assistants too. Once assembled the tray was passed to the ‘chef’ to be cooked and returned later for the children to enjoy. The next batch of activities started with a large map of the world being spread out on the floor and a globe so each child took their turn to see where Mexico is. The children then sang songs about shopping and exchanging pennies for Mexican themed goods
bought….flag colouring completed the session. On leaving the children took away with them their cheese quesadillas (although some couldn’t wait and tucked in straight away!), their menu card so they could make it again and their newly coloured in Mexican flag. All in all, a really great idea and a lovely way to gently introduce new ideas and flavours of the world to our next generation of little globe trotters!

Tennis Tykes With nominations already in the bag for the ‘What’s On for Little Ones’ awards, we attended a Tennis Tykes class in Chapel Allerton. We met owner, Caroline Buncall, to find out about the Tennis Tykes and to discover more about the classes which currently run in Chapel Allerton, Adel, Wetherby, Harrogate, Ripon, York as well as South Manchester and Cheshire. I’m intrigued to know how the session can take place in a hall but soon Caroline is unloading brightly coloured mini tennis equipment and nets. The hall starts to fill up with the buzz of excitement coming from the children as they anticipate the lesson. With maximum numbers of eight in a class it means that there is plenty of one to one attention from Caroline and at the same time, parents join in so they can also share in the thrill of their child’s achievements.
research from top US Scientists has also shown it is the best first sport in ensuring great physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.” The 45 minute lesson comes to an end and you can see that the children have all had a great time. Every child carries with them a Tennis Tykes sticker book which charts their achievements and it is clear that they are all really proud to get their Tommy or Tessa Tennis Tyke sticker. As one Dad puts it, “We have been really impressed with how Thomas’ (3) co-ordination skills have developed so quickly through the classes” and Millie’s Mum also explains, “I can’t quite believe that following the Tennis Tykes classes, Millie (31/2) is able to engage in simple hitting rallies over the net. I wish Tennis Tykes had been around when her older brother was 3.”
Caroline concludes saying, “We aim to really develop all the children’s skills and if we end up with a Wimbledon champion into the bargain that will just be a fantastic by product of the programme.” You wouldn’t bet against it having seen how quickly some of the children are progressing and they are in good company as Andy Murray started playing tennis with his Mum at 3 years old! For further information on the Tennis Tykes term time and holiday class programme and to book your FREE TASTER CLASS at one of the venues, please contact Caroline Buncall on 07843 342662, email caroline.buncall@ tennistykes.co.uk or log onto www.tennistykes.co.uk for further information.
Caroline starts off with a fun warm up and it is clear, despite knowing myself how difficult it is to keep my three year old’s attention, that the children are following and listening well to the instructions. There are lots of coordination activities and opportunities for the children to practice their counting and colour recognition skills. The children also demonstrate hitting over the nets with a racket to the group which you can really see helps their confidence. There is also lots of praise and high 5s and the children are tested so it’s great for developing their stamina and determination. Caroline explains, “There is a fun, play based but educational approach to the classes, with each session teaching and developing, agility, balance and co-ordination through the sport of tennis. The

You time Top 10 Ideas if you want to start a family friendly business Around three in four mums would love to start a business, but it can be difficult to know where to start. Antonia Chitty is the author of several books to help you including ‘The Mumpreneur Guide’s Start Your Own Business’ Book and ‘Start a Family Friendly Business: 129 Business Ideas for Mums’. Read on for Antonia’s advice on how to get started: 1. List your priorities such as earning money, or finding work that lets you stay home with your children. Then, write down your skills, and ask others what they think you're good at. 2. Think about the hours you can devote to work. Be realistic if you plan to work around the kids, as children may not understand "mummy's working". 3. Research the market for your business. Will people buy your product or service? Is it unique enough to be appealing? Look at your competition and work out how your business could be different or better. 4. Decide on your business idea. Here are a few to get you thinking. Do you want to: Start a service. A service business can use your existing skills and is a great business to choose if you want to start earning fast. Turn a hobby into a business. If you are crafty and creative you might like to start selling your crafts. Carefully cost up the materials you use AND factor in the time it takes you to make each item before you set a price. Buy into a franchise. This gives you a proven business idea plus start up support. Make money online. There are hundreds of ways to make
money online, but it helps to have some guidance to find genuine opportunities. Drop shipping allows you to set up an online store without having to hold stock.
out regular newsletter and exclusive offers. It is easier to get existing customers to buy again than to find new ones.
5. Prepare a business plan. Set out aims and objectives, and the steps you need to take to achieve your goals. Pop into a local Enterprise Agency for advice.
10. Get some support and training. Go back to your list of skills and add in areas that you struggle with. Allow in your business plan for help: you could find a bookkeeper, or get someone to help with PR, marketing, packing and post office runs or admin. Find other mums starting a business too, and make sure you invest in training for yourself: start with the free ‘Mumpreneur in a Month’ e-course at www.becomeamumpreneur.com.
6. Register as self employed. You have 3 months to let the Inland Revenue know you have started a business, or you could end up with a £100 fine.
Finally, watch out for your work-life balance. Business can easily take over. Have a finish time each day, put your work away, and make some time to relax.
7. Plan how you will promote and market your business. Add a margin to your product or service price which will go towards promotion. Note on a wall calendar what activities you will do each month to promote the business. Spend 15 minutes each day on promotion.
Start a Family Friendly Business: 129 Business Ideas for Mums and The Mumpreneur Guide’s Start Your Own Business book are both £9.99 and available from Amazon.
Start up an online information site. Pick a topic that you are an expert in. Plan how you will make money from your site: advertising and sponsorship or membership subscriptions.
8. Promote your business online. Start a Twitter account in the name of your business, create a blog and a Facebook fan page. 9. Keep good records. Note down every item of expenditure from the start: it makes it easier to claim your business costs against tax. Start a customer database so you can send Autumn

Gill McDermott, Enjoy-a-Ball franchisee and local Mum changed her career path to fit in with her family:
"I have run Enjoy-a-Ball Leeds franchise for three years now and it has been an ideal solution to all my 'busy mum' problems. Having taken voluntary redundancy after 19 years in a desk job, I vowed never to work in an office again, and to do something for me. I was amazed when I stumbled across Enjoy-a-Ball. It fitted all my criteria: flexible hours that I could decide upon, still able to do the school runs, two free days in the week to do my 'housewife' jobs! And lastly I could be in control of what I earned; I now get paid more money coaching ten hours a week than I earned working 20 hours per week in my desk job. However there was an unexpected benefit I have gained from taking this leap, which you can’t put a price on. All my family & friends have commented on how much more confident I have become. Standing in front of 200 people at Calverley Royal Wedding Tea Party organising the kids’ races, I actually enjoyed myself when three years ago I would not have wanted to even stand up in a meeting never mind speak! After owning my franchise for a year, the established Enjoy-A-Ball franchise in Harrogate came up for sale. My husband had seen both my enjoyment and success, so he decided to pack in his corporate job and run his own business too! We must be mad!! I have been so appreciative that my loves of sport and children have been able to be combined into a job that I truly love, never mind owning my own business.
Also seeing other franchisees grow around the country, I am now confident enough to take on a business partner or an assistant to help spread the word. It really does give me a buzz when I hear people saying "this is great...there is nothing like this near us!" And that happens all the time...
But things are moving on for us – owning our own business has given us confidence and skills to ‘seize the day’ and my husband was recently offered the job of a lifetime overseas an opportunity we couldn't turn it down. So it is with sadness but a huge sense of achievement that both Leeds and Harrogate Enjoy-aBall Franchises are up for sale. As I head off to the land down under I would just say to anyone thinking of changing their career, don’t be afraid, you never know where it will lead to”

Now you have your basic mask here are some of our ideas:
The simple ideas often go down really well, so for these all you need are:
Animal mask:
Paper plates Elastic, string or ribbon Scissors Paint, crayons, glitter, paper, felt, cotton wool, tissues, pipe cleaners, leaves - anything you can find to stick on! Firstly make the basic mask
Carnival mask
Paint the plate the colour of the animal, black for a cat, just add a pink nose for a rabbit, stripey for a tiger, add wool for a lion’s mane. Add a nose, you can either paint one on or stick on a button, cotton wool, felt, screwed up tissues Use pipe cleaners to add whiskers
Flower mask:
Then cut some appropriate ears out and stick on to the top of the mask
Paint the plate yellow or orange. Make petals from tissue paper, card, or use another paper plate. Colour and decorate each petal and stick all the way round the edge of the mask.
Lay the paper plate face down. Mark where you would like the eyes to be cut out so you can see. Cut the eyes out in circles, square, triangle or even stars. You can either cut a hole for the mouth or draw a mouth on.
You can use a wooden lollipop stick or a couple of straws stuck together to make a handle for the the mask.
Ribbons, string, or elastic can be used to hold the mask in place. Take one end of your choice and tape it about 4 cm out from the eyes. This will allow you to wear the mask and not bend the plate back.
