“Do as I do!” The art of encouraging good eating habits Checking out children’s diets It’s 8am on Friday morning and health and nutrition consultant, Kieran, is in the queue of his local supermarket learning first hand about the roots of childhood obesity. There are a few young girls, no older than ten, lined up at the checkout before heading to school with chocolate, chocolate, a packet of sweets and some fizzy pop. And that was just one of the girls! Now, I’d love to think she was going to share these goodies around, but her small apple shaped body suggested they were all for keeps.
“” Knowing what to feed your children is one thing; getting them to eat what you want is quite another. So, hopefully, this is just a one-off treat and children are getting well fed at home? A stroll down the ‘children’s food’ aisle in the
supermarket suggests otherwise. Since when did kids need their own special type of food anyway? Can’t they simply eat the same things as the rest of us? I understand that ‘children’s food’ is quick and easy to prepare but do we really want to leave our children’s health in their own hands? Or worse still, let the food manufacturers decide what’s best for them?
• concentrate better in school • have more energy and get up and go! So, perhaps we need a simple approach to healthy eating. Good nutrition, whether for children or adults, isn’t all related to the specific foods we eat. It’s about developing good daily habits. Here are just three ideas which might help if adopted early on:
Mums (and Dads) are legends with all they have to manage and we all want what’s best for our children. But how do we set them up to maintain a good weight and avoid related health problems in later life, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and sleep problems. Knowing what to feed your children is one thing; getting them to eat what you want is quite another. My mum used to think she was doing a good job, until she found the stray pieces of broccoli tucked neatly up in the hem of the curtain! But why bother? Why struggle to get children to adopt healthy eating habits? Here are a few reasons why it’s worth overcoming the initial resistance: Children who develop good eating habits early on tend to: • have a stronger immune system so they get sick less often

1. Take advantage of ‘monkey see monkey do’ Kids are smart. They look to you for guidance – even if they swear blind they don’t. The problem is they aren’t just listening to what you say; they’re watching what you do too. Have you got an aversion to eating anything green? Just watch how quickly your children pick up on this. Try teaching them
healthy eating rituals by setting a good example for them to follow. If our own food habits aren’t great, it’s going to be hard to get our children to do what we struggle to do ourselves. 2. Fill them up at home It’s hard to monitor what your children eat when they’re away from your immediate supervision. But we just need to assume that their food choices aren’t going to be great. So you could try to fill them up on the good stuff at every chance you get. Why not aim to get your little ones eating: • breakfast every day • fruit at lunchtime
3. Eat at the table Just watch how fast children eat when they’re sat watching TV. Sitting up at the table helps slow the meal down, making us naturally eat less. Eating together also gives you another chance to set a good example and be sociable at the same time. Role it out When you base meals and snacks around whole, minimally processed foods like meat, fish, eggs, fruit, vegetables, nuts and whole grains it’s a good starting point. After all, I don’t know too many kids who get overweight by stuffing themselves with nutrient packed broccoli and bingeing on omega 3 rich oily fish.
• veggies at dinner? This will give you three chances to get some good nutrition into their little bellies.
“” Eating together also
gives you another chance to set a good example and be sociable at the same time.
But the main take home message is to begin with you. Children are highly influenced by their parents and carers. So if they’re copying you and you don’t eat a healthy wellbalanced diet, then where are they going to learn good habits from? Remember, what you do shouts far louder than anything you ever say to your children. If you’d like some advice on how to get your eating habits on track Kieran has been helping people with their diets since 2005 and would love to help. To book a free consultation, call Kieran on 07766 808 553 or email Kieran@diligenthealth.co.uk

Food
We’ve got some simple classic recipes for making and enjoying on a picnic, or as an afternoon treat with your children. Each can be flavoured in different ways to suit the occasion or your taste.
Mary’s Muffins This never fail muffin recipe is really quick and easy and can be adapted to any flavour – sweet or savoury! Makes 12 large muffins
Method 1. Pre-heat oven to 180C (160C for a fan oven). 2. Sieve the flour into a bowl, add sugar, and mix well. 3. In a separate bowl place milk, sunflower oil and egg, and mix well. 4. Add wet ingredients to dry and mix together but not too much – lumpy is good! 5. Add flavour and mix a little. 6. Place in 12 muffin cases in a muffin tin and spoon in mixture to near the top of each case. 7. Place in the oven for 20 minutes. 8. Remove and place on a cooling rack.
Flapjacks
Packed full of oats and energy, flapjacks are ideal snacks for those afternoons spent running around in the park!
Ingredients 250g oats 125g butter 125g sugar 2-4 tablespoons golden syrup (the more syrup you add the stickier the flapjack - so add to suit your taste and teeth!) Flavour ideas: raisins, grated apple, dried apricots, nuts, pumpkin seeds.
Ingredients 350g self raising flour 150g caster sugar 180ml milk 160ml sunflower oil 1 large egg Flavour eg banana and raisin, choc chip and mandarins, blueberries, mixed berry, muesli, smarties or anything else you have handy – the amount depends on you and your taste, add what you think looks enough!
Method 1. Pre-heat oven to 180C (160C for a fan oven). 2. Melt butter, sugar and syrup in a pan over a low heat.
3. Add the oats and flavour, then mix well. 4. Spread mix into a baking dish lined with greaseproof, 8” square allows a fairly thick mixture spread. 5. Place in the oven for 20 minutes. 6. Remove, cut into squares whilst warm and place on a cooling rack.
Cookies Perfect for picnics! Makes about 30 small cookies.
Ingredients 225g butter, softened 110g caster sugar 275g plain flour Flavours: lemon (add grated zest of 1 lemon), choc chip (add 125g choc chips), orange and raisin.
Method 1. Pre-heat oven to 170C. 2. Cream butter in a large bowl until soft (you can do this in a food processor for speed). 3. Add sugar, beat until light and fluffy (again whizz it in the food mixer for speed). 4. Sieve in flour. 5. Add flavour. 6. Mix to form a ball-shaped dough – ensure it’s not too sticky. 7. With your hands break off pieces the size of a walnut and place on a baking tray, give them a little space, although they don’t spread too far. 8. Press down on each ball with a damp fork – or finger! 9. Place in oven for 13-15 minutes until light brown. 10. Remove from oven and place on a cooling rack. You can add extra flavour by dipping in melted chocolate once cooled, and then leave to set on greaseproof paper.

Bump, birth & beyond Boo talks to local experts in HypnoBirthing, doula services, independent midwifery, postnatal yoga and baby massage about options available in your area
What is HypnoBirthing? HypnoBirthing® is a hypnosis for childbirth and is as much a philosophy as it is a technique for achieving a satisfying, relaxing, and stress-free birth. What will I learn? The classes will show you how to call upon your body’s own natural relaxant and thus lessen, or even eliminate, discomfort and the need for medication. Through self-hypnosis, special breathing, massage and visualisation, HypnoBirthing teaches you how to trust your body and work with it, as well as how to free yourself of harmful emotions that lead to paincausing fear and unyielding muscles. You will not be in a trance – just profoundly relaxed while still aware and fully in control. How much will it cost? Classes are around £260 per couple, including book, CD and course materials. Where can I find out more? For more details on classes in Leeds, contact Cheryl Mason on (0113) 368 3777 or visit www.cherylmason.co.uk
What is a doula? Pronounced ‘doola’, doula is a Greek word meaning ‘caregiver or woman servant’. Nowadays, it refers to an experienced woman/mother who offers emotional and practical support to a woman (or couple) before, during and after childbirth.
What can I expect? A doula will support parents during pregnancy, through face to face antenatal visits and telephone calls and provide continuous support throughout labour – whether at home or in hospital. Postnatally, doulas can assist in establishing breastfeeding, if required, help with older children, be a shoulder to lean on, and even do the housework! What are the possible benefits? Research has shown that having a doula present at a birth can shorten first-time labour by an average of two hours, decrease the chance of a caesarean section by 50% and increase the success in breast feeding.* How much will it cost?
What do parents say?
“”
I am so glad that my wife finally got the birth she has always wanted and I am in no doubt that you (Rachel) played a crucial role in that. You have demonstrated to us that your knowledge and support are invaluable to anyone who is having a baby. Chris, dad of two, Leeds. Where can I find out more? For more details, please contact Rachel at Mother Nuture Doulas on (0113)219 5150 or visit www. mothernuturedoulas.com or www.doula.org.uk
As a guide, birth doulas tend to charge around £200 to £500 for a full package. Rates for postnatal doulas tend to be between £10 and £15 per hour.

What is an independent midwife? An independent midwife can provide personalised midwifery care in your own home. All fully qualified, experienced midwives they form an equal partnership with you, offering professional advice, friendly support and prompt referral to other health care specialist, if required. What can I expect? Before the birth; they provide advice and information on all aspects of pregnancy, birth and parenting through home-based antenatal sessions, arranging ultrasounds scans and other tests if necessary, and liaising with other professionals you want involved in your maternity care. During labour; independent midwives care for and support you during your labour, delivery and first hours of your baby’s life. In the event of a transfer to hospital, they will stay with you, giving support and information and acting as your advocate. After the birth; they visit regularly for up to 6 weeks, providing support and advice on feeding and all aspects of parenting including arranging screening tests for your baby if you so wish. What do Mums say?
“”
It was so reassuring to have our questions answered completely and with total support for our decisions. This allowed us to focus on the positive experience of the birth. It was wonderful. Mum of one, Halifax. Where can I find out more? See more information about Yorkshire Storks, Yorkshire’s oldest established independent midwifery practice on www.yorkstorks.co.uk or contact them on 01423 360460.
What is postnatal yoga? A woman is designed to bear children yet the experience of pregnancy and childbirth can put the body under a massive strain and the muscles used are often stretched to their maximum. Postnatal yoga allows you to re-claim your body after the birth of your child. It re-patterns the muscles used in pregnancy and also aims to heal, nurture, re-align and strengthen you from within. What do the classes entail? Combining deep breathing techniques with yoga postures and flowing movements, you can regain your posture, close up the body after pregnancy, prevent years of discomfort (eg stress incontinence or womb prolapse) and can safely knit the abdominals back together. A baby brings huge changes to your life. Postnatal yoga supports adaptation to change - physical, mental, emotional, spiritual – and it promotes positive relations between mother and baby in a relaxed, friendly environment. How much do the sessions cost? Postnatal yoga courses are run at The Yoga Space, 378 Meanwood Road, Leeds, LS7 2JF. The first class costs £5. Sessions are suitable for all mums with babies from 6+ weeks old. How can I find out more? For more information visit www. theyogaspace.co.uk or contact Sarah Blenkhorn on (0113) 288 8667.
What is baby massage? Baby massage is a wonderful way of bonding with your baby, the strokes can soothe many complaints such as wind/colic, sleeplessness and poor digestion. Its effects can be immediate but last a lifetime.
The free lifestyle magazine for you and yours
Boo_Summer 10_Leeds_FINAL.indd 13
What do the classes entail? Touch is a baby’s first form of communication and the primary sense until 12 years old. Sessions are baby led and relaxed; strokes are taught slowly and built on. Massage is suitable from newborn but 4-6 weeks is the earliest recommended for classes. Do teachers have to be qualified? Instructors are qualified as Certified Infant Massage Instructors (CIMI) through the International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM). At Baby Massage Vivere, sessions are taught by a CIMI (IAIM) with experience of extra needs, premature and more mobile babies. How much do the sessions cost? Baby Massage Vivere run several courses in North Leeds which you attend once a week. It costs £40 for a 5 week course including oils and handouts. What do other parents say?
“”
My little one and I have thoroughly enjoyed the course - it’s a great way to bond with your baby, have fun and meet new mums who are in a similar position. Highly recommended! Katie, Leeds. National Playday 4 August
Playday is the annual celebration of children’s right to play which also raises awareness of some serious issues affecting play. The 2010 campaign theme is Our place which puts children at the heart of our communities, and asks everyone, young and old, to help create better places for all of us to live and play. Now in its 23rd year, National Playday encourages thousands of children and young people to get out and play at locally organised events. These range from small-scale neighbourhood get-togethers to large-scale public events organised by local authorities and national organisations. Last year over 834 events were held across the UK. Anyone can organise a Playday event or take part in celebrations. You can find out more at www. playday.org.uk

Sure Start Children's Centres
offer children under five and their families the services they need, including information and access to childcare integrated with early education, health services, advice for parents and help to access training and work. For more information on what is on offer at Alwoodley Children's Centre please contact us on 0113 2170134 or come along and visit us to view the facilities.
At Allerton CE Primary, we consider the environment and our impact upon it to be such important issues that throughout the year we have embedded it within the curriculum. Key Stage 2 have been looking at the impact of climate change throughout the world, holding their own ‘Allerton Climate Debate’ when world leaders were at the Copenhagen Climate Summit and creating fantastic artwork showing their hopes for the future.
We also looked closer to home. By setting up mammal foot print traps and undertaking a spot of bird watching we found out what animals shared our school – then every class got involved in making the school more wildlife friendly by creating a wildlife garden. Here we created a pond and a bog garden; made insect boxes and Year 3 went even further by creating bird boxes and selling them to parents so they could buy further plants for the garden.
National Science and Engineering week saw us focusing on two very different subjects; Firstly every class researched an endangered animal, these ranged from orang-utans to bees and tuna! This really brought out the children’s passion - they

Boo_Summer 10_Leeds_FINAL.indd 21
wrote letters to companies that they felt were not doing all they could to protect these animals. They also wrote to MP’s with one pupil going one step further and grilling the canvassing MP on the matter during his pre election rounds! Our second focus was rockets, we are lucky to have Mr Towers , a passionate physics teacher, as a governor, so he helped the children design their own aerodynamic rockets. Years 3 & 4 experienced Magna Science Centre whilst Year 6 took part in workshops at Leeds University. Dad zone
Dads need time too Boo reader, Eamon, father of two has some words of wisdom for other dads out there. Dads, or should I say fathers of the young, is life turning into a relay race? Do you sometimes feel that once you step in the door, your other half steps out of it and the baton (baby) has been passed over to you? I know bringing up a baby is hard work and the coffee mornings, book club meetings and other social gatherings that your betterhalf arranges with other mums are well deserved, but when is it going to be your turn?
The role of ‘dad’ is sometimes overlooked. Playing an equally important role in bringing up their children as mums, Boo’s Dad zone gives fathers a chance to have their say. If you would like to contribute to the Dad zone, please email: liz.rhodes@boomag.co.uk
there is a small gang of fathers that take it in turns, once a month to host an evening where we can sit down in front of a DVD and watch a ‘blokes’ movie with a few beers. Let me give you a few examples of the types of movie that don’t feature famous ‘Rom Com’ actors that have graced the presence of a good Chan evening. But before I do, there are obviously a few strict rules that need to be adhered to (adapt them as you see fit). Actually, there’s only one - no musicals! My favourite, (and I consider it to be the definitive Chan movie) is Kill Bill. Other hits have been, in my opinion, Casino Royale, The Bourne Identity, The World’s Fastest Indian and In Bruges.
The great thing about the Chan evening is that you just play what you want and enjoy. Ask any of the other dads in our gang and I’m sure they will come up with a completely different list of what their best evenings were. If you do intend to adopt a version of the Chan, extension activities could include the Chan on tour with Christmas outings to curry houses, weekends in the lakes to ascend various peaks, mountain biking and even the occasional play based around The Clash. In summary, I recommend you give it a go, what have you got to lose? Beer is good. Start by getting a few friends together and set the date in the calendar. Just remember one thing, no musicals. Enjoy.
Or course, being the good father, you enjoy the quality time with your offspring and being the great partner, you make time for the love of your life, but surely something has to give so you spend less time bonding with the guys.
“”
There are obviously a few strict rules that need to be adhered to (adapt them as you see fit). Actually, there’s only one - no musicals! A while ago, a few of the ‘dads’ were chatting and came up with the idea of a male equivalent. We call it ‘The Chan’ named after that icon of all that is good about being a man, Jackie Chan. Basically,

You time Finding time for yourself! In this edition’s ‘You time’, we are taking a look at life coaching and how it might help you, plus ideas for hosting ‘working’ parties at home Life coaching - for you? You might think that life coaching and hypnotherapy is purely for the rich and famous who need to ‘find themselves’. Well, it isn’t...it can be helpful and affordable for you too. Of course, if you are entirely satisfied with your life, and what the future holds then life coaching is not for you! So what is it? Life coaching is essentially about helping you to change your life for the better. By taking stock and setting achievable goals, you can grow and improve as a person. You will then be more motivated to take the right action and turn your goals into reality. Life coaching can help you move forward in areas of your life which you may want to change such as your career, relationships, fitness and wellbeing, work-life balance or selfconfidence. Changing yourself involves thinking in new ways, and one of the most powerful and easiest approaches to doing this is through hypnosis. This is why many successful life coaches are also qualified hypnotherapists, and use trance work to help people overcome many problems such as weight, smoking, fears, depression, addictions, phobias, anxiety, and lack of confidence.
fixing we don’t hesitate to take it to a garage and spend whatever it takes to get it back on the road again. You may therefore be surprised to learn that life coaching costs less per hour than a good mechanic charges! So, life coaching is much more accessible than you think. Life coach, Ghislaine at Therapy by Ghislaine in Pudsey, is a parent and has experience of helping other parents, mums in particular, to deal with the challenges that this brings to their lives. She has recently established a life coaching group where issues such as low self esteem, weight loss and phobias to name a
few are treated in weekly hour long sessions which are affordable to many people. Given the great response seen on Netmums – it has been received with open arms. Her message is “Stop living for when you lose those extra pounds, are feeling happy, get the job you always wanted, or whatever else you dream about, and learn to live for now !” For more information, contact Ghislaine on 07954 171094 or visit www.therapybyghislaine.co.uk or you could try a trial session using the voucher on page 34.
The Healthy Portion Plate Split into measured sections to help control portion sizes. Helps you make simple lifestyle changes for a healthier diet and to lose weight.
How will it benefit me? Many of us put ourselves under immense pressure to be perfect whether by losing weight, being super mum, being the perfect wife/partner, meeting that all important project deadline at work, but many of us often end up neglecting our own needs and desires as a result. Lack of time and/or money are often used as the reason for us not to deal with our issue. But if our car needs

Party at home We have come a long way since the infamous Tupperware parties of the 1970s. Now, there are a whole plethora of companies offering party planning ideas where you can invite your friends over for drinks at home, have fun and even earn some extra income at the same time. Here are just a few ideas: Phoenix Trading Phoenix Trading is a direct selling, independent card publishing house, marketing a range of top quality cards, stationery and accessories at fantastic prices (£1.20 a card). It is flexible with no targets, no pressure but plenty of support.
For more information, visit www.phoenix-trading.eu/web/ janettelloyd Janette Lloyd, Phoenix Independent Trader 11240. Let’s party – a business where you can excel Network Marketing is all about relationships. What better way to develop these, build new friendships and have fun than at a party! This is a fast growing profession – sharing products, and sponsoring and coaching others can
be truly rewarding in many ways.
UK based, with operations also in Australia, New Zealand, USA and France. The products are not available in the shops so the business is run through a mix of mail order, house parties, fundraising events and stalls. There are regular new product launches with one brochure and four supplements a year.
What do we do at Forever Living? We market a unique portfolio, including the most effective Aloe Vera range on the market. Use the products and become your own best customer, then share them with others – at home or at work – and talk about an amazing opportunity to earn an extra income of £200£2000 or more every month.
Peek-a-boo Toy parties are a simple, fun way of shopping for toys and gifts in your own home together with friends or family members, or at a venue to suit you. A small family-run toy company with strong ethical values, Peeka-boo Toys offers many products rarely seen on the high street. Its portfolio includes traditional wooden toys, musical instruments, fair trade puzzles, knitted soft toys, comforters and other funky design led baby gifts. Guests are encouraged to touch, feel and play with the beautifully crafted samples, to be sure they are making the right choice for their infant or child. Parties can also be held at local playgroups or NCT groups, where toddlers can help test drive before you buy! The host (or group) earns commission based on the total party sales. So, the more the party yields, the more the host has to spend! These parties are a unique way of getting high quality toys for free, at a time when money may be a little tight! Other benefits are also available. If you like the idea, contact Sarah on 07525457967 or email takeapeek@ peekabootoys.co.uk

Journey to The Deep When we got to The Deep and were told it was ‘Quiet day’, our initial reaction was “how on earth are we were going to find the volume control on our two and four year old children?” They were already giddy to be at ‘The Quarium’ in search of Nemo and mermaids! But this wasn’t necessary. ‘Quiet days’ – run a couple of times a year – offer visitors the chance to tour the aquarium with signed presentations and enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere.
worth hanging around for the diving presentation which takes place at 2pm every day and animal feeding displays at various times. For hungry little mouths, the cafe was reasonably priced but if you prefer to take your own food, there’s also a picnic area. Favourites with our kids were the glass bubble lift rising up through the water and the ‘sea themed’ Hullabaloo soft play area with its reed beds, tunnels, peep holes and slides – a great chance to let the little one’s let off some steam.
I suppose the only downside to us visiting on ‘Quiet Day’ was that we didn’t get to see The Deep in its everyday noisy glory – but I’m not complaining the whole experience certainly had a calming effect on our family! It also gives us an excuse to go back another day. It shouldn’t cost us either as we can get free entry for 12 months with our Day Plus Pass Form. From the start, there are loads of things to see, touch and learn about, and children can take in as much or as little as they want, depending on their age. With plenty of chances to peep into one of the world’s deepest tanks containing thousands of different types of fish, it’s a truly magical experience for kids and grown-ups alike. It’s also
Stepping into The Legoland Discovery Centre Well…..it’s busy! The queues to get in are pretty daunting so it’s definitely worth booking ahead. Land where there are famous buildings like the Blackpool Tower all made from Lego with lights all over them. They are very realistic. After that we went to Lego Racers: Build and Test where you can build your own Lego racing car and time how fast it goes down some huge ramps – mine won! (Harry).
The first person we met was Professor Brick who is aimed at children aged six years and under, I would say. She showed us how Lego is made in The Lego Factory. Then we went on a ride called Kingdom Quest which is brilliant fun because we had a pistol so we could shoot the Lego baddies to save the princess (Rosie). After the ride, we went into Mini

There are other attractions such as Lego Studios, Master Model Builder and Duplo Village for tiny visitors too. The Café served a selection of sandwiches at fairly reasonable prices and the staff were friendly staff are pretty efficient and keep queues moving. The attraction is much more compact than Legoland Windsor but there is plenty to appeal to all age groups. However, after two or three hours, we were done. The children left happy and satisfied and I can honestly say I’ve never seen so much Lego in my life. I will never again complain about the daily Lego pick-up at home!
