Doing The First 1200 AS BORN TO RIDE PREPARES TO CELEBRATE THEIR 1,200TH TELEVISION EPISODE WITH A MEGA BASH ON MARCH 31ST IN PLANT CITY, THEY REFLECT ON WHAT HAS GONE INTO MAKING THE WORLD’S LONGEST RUNNING BIKER AND MOTORCYCLE TV SHOW THAT REACHES MILLIONS OF VIEWERS EVERY WEEK. TO HELP PUT THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT INTO PERSPECTIVE, CONSIDER THAT BORN TO RIDE HAS BEEN ON TELEVISION FOR NEARLY A QUARTER CENTURY WHILE SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR TV SHOWS OF ALL TIME RAN FOR A COUPLE HUNDRED EPISODES. FOR EXAMPLE, THE 1970S GAVE US M*A*S*H, THAT SPANNED 256 EPISODES. IN THE ‘80S, WE RAISED A TOAST TO “CHEERS” 275 TIMES. AND IN THE 1990S, BEFORE WE COUNTED FACEBOOK FRIENDS BY THE HUNDREDS, WE WATCHED ROSS, RACHEL AND THE REST OF OUR “FRIENDS” 236 TIMES. BELOW IS A COMPILATION OF CONVERSATIONS WITH BTR FOUNDER AND CREATIVE PRODUCER, RON GALLETTI; VICE PRESIDENT, DEB GALLETTI; MULTI-MEDIA SPECIALIST, SETH WUERTZ, FORMER EDITOR, CLARK HODGES, WHO BECAME THE VOICE OF BORN TO RIDE AND WAYNE WITCZAK, THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT FOR FLORIDA SHERIFFS YOUTH RANCHES, ABOUT THEIR MEMORIES OF THE PAST 1,200 EPISODES OF BORN TO RIDE! WHAT DID YOU SET OUT TO DO FOR EPISODE 1? RON: We just started riding a lot and got into the fever of riding motorcycles and we put our bikes in bike shows and noticed that those people were fanatical, and they were buying clothes to match their bikes and we said we need to document the biker lifestyle and BOOM, Born To Ride was born! I did interviews I said “we’ll be right back after a word from our sponsors – and we didn’t have any sponsors. Every weekend we went riding with our friends and one time we had a camera guy join us.
I made a Born to Ride logo that read “It’s Coming” and faxed it to every motorcycle dealer in Tampa Bay. I bought the TV time. I had a goal and had to do it. We just started going to their shops and talking about their stores. I was just running and gunning trying to pull things together. I didn’t know a lot about motorcycles, I just had that vision. AS YOU CELEBRATE 1,200 EPISODES, HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR LONGEVITY COMPARED TO SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR TV SHOWS IN HISTORY LIKE CHEERS (275 EPISODES), MASH (256) AND FRIENDS (236)? RON: It’s been a commitment and when you’re committed to the motorcycle industry, it goes by fast but it’s also a commitment to business. It’s been running its course and every so often you feel where did the time go? Was it that good or was it that bad? We have a duty to document the biker lifestyle in a proper way. We choose to help others with the power of the media we have. We’re still breaking down stereotypes 20 years later and I’m proud of that. I have to thank Attorney Fran Haasch for her continuing support to our biker community. Her continued commitment to Born To Ride to document the lifestyle in a proper manner.
Born To Ride Magazine, The Power of the People, Real Value every month for you the Reader
DEB: The journey has been exciting. We began covering the mechanical aspect of the motorcycle itself and the builders. Then it went into the public service and social aspect of motorcycling. Now we’re getting into the lifestyle and social aspect for the motorcyclist. The community leans on us and looks to us to give them advice because we have seen the growth and changes in the industry such as when the helmet law was repealed. (In 2000, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush was featured on BTR when he repealed the mandatory helmet law allowing anyone over 21 to ride unprotected if they had adequate insurance coverage). There was a big question about how the insurance companies would handle a claim if you didn’t wear a helmet. We provided riders with education on this subject. We continue to educate the community about the many charities that are biker based so they understand who and what they are supporting. That’s how we’ve evolved into today. Now we have it all flavored with a new culture of riders, motorcycles, events and the traveling lifestyle with motorcycles. We were reality TV before Duck Dynasty! WHO ARE SOME OF THE MEMORABLE CELEBRITIES WHO HAVE BEEN FEATURED ON BORN TO RIDE THROUGH THE YEARS? BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 19
he was perfectly clear what he did NOT want to talk about. Everyone has seen the interviews over the years with a very highly strung Evel and I was nervous about interviewing the biggest name in the country. But it turned out Evel was a genuine biker,
RON: Hulk Hogan, Brutus the Barber Beefcake, James Gandolfini, Katey Sagal and the Sons of Anarchy Cast, Bruce Dern, Krista Grotte, Jeb Bush, Willie Nelson (who, along with his band, wore Born to Ride shirts while performing at the Strawberry Festival), Steven Tyler, Evel Knievel, Paul Teutul and the Orange County Choppers family, Sonny Barger, Jesse James, Indian Larry, Arlen Ness and so many more! But one day Hulk Hogan rides in to one of our events in Clearwater with his entourage and I said “Holy Shit, it’s Hulk Hogan” and he comes up to me and says, “brother what can I do for you?” We walked out in the middle of a crowd of bikers and cut promos
and he was putting us over so big for about half an hour. He believed in us and that was a great feeling. We just came on the air a few months at that time in 1996. DEB: My favorite interview was Evel Knievel. I knew everything about him. He was a big part of our family growing up around the TV. In prepping for the interview, BTR 20 | BORNTORIDE.COM
a marketing genius and it was a very good interview. He even complimented my interviewing skills! It was an honor that he obliged us the time. He was thankful and recognized us for our efforts. I knew we were on to something big. HOW HAS THE BORN TO RIDE FAMILY GROWN THROUGH THE YEARS (INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY)? RON: We had kids (Emily and Ronnie, a.k.a “Bruiser”) after we started Born to Ride so they had to be in. We took them on the road. Our kids saw the respect. They learned that working hard and helping others gives you a better outlook on life. I can’t tell you how many people came up to us in Sarasota at Thunder by the Bay this month and asked us how are your kids? We watched them grow up on Born to Ride and that Christmas special when they were this big etc. etc….. and that tells me we are doing the right thing and touching people and they care about family. And they like the fact we care about their family and the biker family. Our kids are teens now and are great kids and we attribute that to the exposure of the great bikers. The people
who work for us are our family too. We need them. I try to get them to the level of my passion. They have grown with us and we are family. DEB: It’s such a brotherhood and a sisterhood. You have a lot of riding clubs that stick together and ride together and help each other. Collectively they support us and we support them. We have all grown together to help each other. Many biker friendly establishments stay open during Christmas and Thanksgiving, so a biker always has someplace to go and someone to be around. That’s family. We raised our children in this environment, and they saw all the great things bikers have done in this community year after year for total strangers. We are proud to see them do that now for others in their circle of friends. The people in our office that help us make this happen
every day and are our family too. They grow personally and contribute so much in their own special way. We have a lot of fun working and becoming old people together lol. (That’s an inside office joke!) CLARK: (Started working for BTR in 1998 after they had been on the scene for a couple years and stayed for more than 15 years. He called the Gallettis “such visionaries.”): I was impressed with all the ideas that Ron had. I learned real quick what Ron wanted and it became almost like osmosis. And Deb was a natural interviewer who never needed a script. I’ve worked with TV personalities and Deb was the best I’ve seen at interviewing. Communication was the key. I did the intros and commercial voice overs. I was in the grocery store and somebody came up to me and asked if I was the voice of Born to Ride and I said, “yes, how did you know?” And they said they watched the show and recognized my voice. Glad I was a part of this history.

SETH: The technology growth has been incredible. We went from VHS to Mini DVD to CD to purely digital and we’ve gone from standard definition to high definition. We have better resources for footage and graphics and animations. The flow is different, it has a more up to date feel. The average person has the ability to look at something and know that it’s dated. It’s an amorphous thing from font types to color schemes and we keep trying to be current with what’s trending. If you were to look at a
work. They have decent family core values that parallel the values of the Youth Ranches – like integrity, honesty and compassion. He’s not just a friend, he’s family.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH THE NEXT 1,200 EPISODES? RON: I’ve seen a lot of change, but I think the next 1,200 episodes is still searching for that ultimate relationship with the bike and the road. It’s out there and we’re going to keep highlighting people. It’s sort of like that surfer looking for that ultimate wave – when he finds it, he’s done or the painter who says that’s the best painting I’ve ever
HOW HAS THE CONTENT OF THE EPISODES CHANGED IN 1,200 EPISODES?
show back in the ‘90s you would see things reminiscent of that era, even down to the 4:3 aspect ratio and now we have animated bumpers in HD where before it was just text. WAYNE: (He has known Ron for more than 20 years. Both of them graduated from Brandon High School in the early 1980s. They are now partners helping the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches that have been providing help and hope to children in need for 61 years.) We just seemed to connect on a very parallel way in that he’s a great family man and wants to give back to his community. He always tries to work some kind of social responsibility into everything he does. We seem to feed off each other in raising the level of enthusiasm and connecting people. He’s a connector of people. Debbie also. She’s got a huge heart for children, obviously a dedicated mom. Even to the extent of Bruiser and Emily – I’ve watched them grow up and become good little citizens in the community doing community
done. No! For me as a biker looking for the ultimate road, I hope we don’t ever find it! But to me it’s always been about the people – power of the people to tell their story and their passion for what they love. Thank you to everyone who has been and currently is a part of Born to Ride. Thank you! RON: The foundation is still the same – it’s the lifestyle of motorcycles and the people who ride them. Diversity is huge, what’s going on in the industry, what’s hot right now and even footage in the can that’s newsworthy. I want to make bad ass content with kick ass commercials and hopefully people will support the message we are putting out there. We care. DEB: Women riders have changed the landscape and content tremendously. Back 20 years ago riding motorcycles was mostly about men. There were only a handful of women that actually rode their own, and they were considered badass. Now women of all walks of life are riding and have their own riding groups. Motorcycles, accessories, apparel are all designed with the female rider perspective. Women are contributing so much to the biker community, they are supporting so many charities, they have added style and fashion, they make a huge economic impact to the industry. And guess what? They are even more badass today!
“Thanks to everyone who has been a part of the first 1200 BTR TV Episodes” Ron Galletti
DEB: In the next few years Ron and I will become empty nesters. We have an eye on exploring and documenting the new RV/ biker lifestyle for our viewers and readers. Some of our friends have already started this adventurous journey and leisure lifestyle with their motorcycles and are loving it. The whole RV lifestyle of motorcycles is such a cool lifestyle to travel and see this great country and all the great motorcycle rallies and thrill races. There’s a sport within a lifestyle. Motorcycle footprints are all over the world. We’re going to find them and document it all! See more BTR TV at, www.youtube.com/borntoridemotorcyclemedia BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 21

Weed and Hemp “The Next Citru$ Indu$try of Florida” ©
You read that right! I met with GOP Florida State representative Ralph Massullo to discuss marijuana and hemp. Massullo, elected since 2016, a biker and physician for more than 26 years, “hemp is the next orange industry of Florida.” It potentially represents a billion-dollar industry with thousands of secure jobs. Massullo represents Citrus County and the North West portion of Hernando County. He was a key contributor when medicinal marijuana became legal in Florida. Nowadays, Massullo focuses on “Hemp Bill HB333,” a bill he and co-sponsor Sam Killebrew filed for the 2019 Legislative session, which aims to set a regulatory framework for hemp cultivation and CBD quality control. If you want more jobs in Florida, this bill is it and you need to talk/write to your elected representatives. This is huge! Take my word for it. If you are a farmer in Florida, I suggest you get on this opportunity! Look at Colorado’s economy and coffers! They don’t even have the weather Florida has, which would translate into a 12-month crop season. So, what about medical and recreational marijuana? Well, thanks to Massullo and many of his GOP colleagues, as a result of voters demands, medical marijuana is now legal in Florida. “Vaping” that is. Not “smoking” or at least not yet because that is in the works too. As a physician, Massullo agrees medical marijuana’s benefits are surpassing all expectations but there is still much more to do. Different strains will have different benefits for different people or “genetic markers” as he puts it. Hence the importance of FDA approved studies. Speaking of FDA, did you know medical and recreational marijuana is legal in Washington, DC, but the FDA classification of marijuana still makes it federally illegal? Did you know the FDA also makes it illegal to “study” medical marijuana despite the overwhelming multitude of positive UFC Photo BTR 36 | BORNTORIDE.COM
testimonials? Yep! Big pharma still cannot legally study marijuana. Now big pharma created “synthetic marijuana” as a substitute so they can legally study it. The marijuana business has become such a huge business opportunity that now the tobacco and spirits manufacturers are buying and therefore becoming a real threat to big pharma.

Who would have thought? Riding back home my bike broke down in Homosassa. It was pretty serious, so I called my boys from Motorcycle Rescue
Transport to come get me. These guys have terminals in Sanford, NPR, Crystal River, Tampa, Daytona, and Orlando; so, they can get to me anywhere in Florida at a phone call away. While waiting for them a mere 30 minutes my mind was preoccupied with the conversation and I thought maybe I could use some medicinal marijuana to deal with this right now! I think it is time we all really support HB333 folks. It only makes sense job-wise and economically speaking. Glenn H. Curtiss
The fastest man in the world ... bullets are his only rival! - 1907
“The fastest man in the world ... bullets are the only rivals of Glenn H. Curtiss of Hammondsport.” - 1907 newspaper headline Wearing a leather cap, a well-manicured moustache and a steely gaze, Glenn Hammond Curtiss stares out of a time-worn black and white postcard-like photo. In the background, frothy waves splash the beach, the very hard packed sands upon which his experimental V-8 powered motorcycle will transport him into the history books as “The Fastest Man in the World.” The day was Thursday, January 24, the year 1907 and the place, Ormond Beach on the east coast of Florida. The record … 136.3 mph, a land speed record that would stand for 11 years and then only surpassed by an automobile— the Blitzen Benz hitting 141 mph. It would not be until 1930 that a motorcycle would best Glenn Curtiss’s feat of daring-do and mechanical design.

“Ormond Beach on the east coast of Florida. The record … 136.3 mph, a land speed record that would stand for 11 years and only surpassed by an automobile ...” The surfside setting for the famous blast down the beach had its origins a few years earlier when in 1902 influential Ormond Beach residents began promoting racing on the local beach with an inaugural automobile
speed run. The sport grew in popularity and even Henry Ford showed up for an event in one of his early cars, and slept in it. At the time, he couldn’t afford a hotel room. Another “celebrity” to take up residence in Ormond Beach was John D. Rockefeller. Rockefeller wanted to live to 100 and was looking for the perfect healthy environment in order to reach the century mark (he made it to 97). Ormond Beach became a playground for the rich and famous … and those feeling the need for speed. Case in point, one Glenn H. Curtiss, a true American hero and a larger than life personality whose exploits inspired a popular series of youth books “The Adventures of Tom Swift” penned by Victor Appleton. And yes, there was one volume circa 1910 titled “Tom Swift and His Motor-Cycle or Fun and Adventures on the Road.” Curtiss was always looking for new adventures on, or off, the road. He knew
Did You Know: On January 26, 1911, Curtiss flew the first seaplane from the water in the US, which he designed.
MOTORMAN’S TEST RIDE
he could find the fast lane he needed to break the existing record at Ormond Beach. It was at Ormond Beach in 1904 where Charles Schmidt drove his Packard Gray Wolf to a world record in the kilometer at 76 mph and where, William Vanderbilt, Jr. set the world record for the one-mile, reaching 92 mph in a 90-horsepower Mercedes. These races put Ormond Beach on the speed map and brought it fame as home to 30 years of land-speed records eventually evolving into the now famous Daytona Beach 500 and the founding of NASCAR. Back in 1907, the 29-year old Glenn Curtiss had already invented or developed many of the more than 500 designs and components he would use during his lifetime. He had a hand in the development of the Wright Brothers first airplane and additional aeronautical experiments. He also partnered BTR 50 | BORNTORIDE.COM
with Alexander Graham Bell that included developing and patenting the aircraft aileron now universally intrinsic to controlled flight. Whether it was propeller powered or rolled on wheels, Glenn was always pushing the envelope. Although his lasting fame would rest with aircraft, it all began with motorcycles. As a result of his experiences as a bicycle racer, Western Union bicycle messenger and bicycle shop owner Curtiss became interested in motorcycles. In 1901, he began motorizing bicycles with his own single cylinder internal combustion engines, initially fashioned from tomato cans. He not only talked the talk, he walked the walk, racing what he built and earning the accolade in 1903 as the “First American Motorcycle Champion” by reaching 54.6 mph. By 1905, he set the world speed records for one, two, and three-mile events. Aside from piloting

his speedsters he tinkered out a number of advancements including the handlebar twist grip throttle control and a triple cylinder engine designated the W-3, essentially a V-twin with a third cylinder which Curtiss himself called the fastest production motorcycle in the world. How such ingenuity arose is one of those mysteries of nature for Curtiss was raised in near poverty and lost his parents when very young and subsequently only attained an 8th grade education. As Trafford Doherty, Director of the Curtiss Museum explains, “Curtiss was incredibly intuitive and incredibly mechanical. He was also extremely athletic and in the1890s was virtually unbeaten as a bicycle racer. He was very competitive and that competitive nature appeared first with bicycles, then motorcycles, and then with his business ventures. While of a serious Did You Know: Alexander Graham Bell regarded Curtiss as “the greatest motor expert in the country”.
demeanor, a man of relatively few words and not comfortable with public speaking, he was also known to be congenial among his fellows. His contributions were legion and rightly earned him the accolades as “The Henry Ford of Aviation” and “The Fastest Man in the World.” On a cool overcast day in 1907, Glenn Curtiss made his mark, at least in the history books of motorcycling. He had been designing and building a variety of engines including singles, V-twins and inline fours, but he literally made his mark with a lightweight air-cooled V8. The power plant came into existence due to the everincreasing demand for more powerful aircraft engines for the burgeoning production of early 20th century flying machines. The recordbreaking motorcycle itself was basically a rolling, but not quite flying, test bed for the BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 51

While his preceding engines were primarily single cylinder and 50-degree V-Twins, Curtis went to a 90-degree design featuring cast iron F-type heads, as utilized on his smaller displacement power plants. Moreover, it dispensed with head gaskets, thanks to the quality of its design and manufacture. Inside the massive hunk of metal lurked a solid billet steel crank while internal lubrication was handled via a dry sump and random splash system. Under the valve covers, inlet valves were activated by atmospheric pressure while pushrods actuated the exhaust valves. Fed by twin carbs, also Curtiss designs, the throttle cables were hidden inside the handlebars. The electrical system relied upon jump-spark Ignition energized by dry cell batteries. Although it looked ungainly with its 4,000 cc engine suspended in what was a heavily beefed up bicycle frame with a 64-inch wheelbase, the overall design benefited from a power to weight ratio (one hp per 6.8 pounds) that was advanced by any standards, especially by those of 1907, the bike tipping the scales at merely 275 lbs. Once the machine was unloaded at Ormond Beach, Glenn Curtiss surveyed the saltsprayed four-mile course. It was divided into a two-mile section for reaching top speed, a BTR 52 | BORNTORIDE.COM
third mile for timing purposes, and last but not least a “slow down and stop” mile. As the bike was shaft-driven with no clutch and but one tall gear, it was an all or nothing proposition. One kept twisting the throttle and let the speed build while the screaming unmuffled pipes scattered sea birds for miles.
As the Curtiss Museum director comments, “It must have sounded like the Wrath of God!” Assisting Curtiss were Thomas Baldwin and longtime friend, the aptly named, “Tank” Waters. Their brawn was used to push start the machine to life. They needed to be hale and hearty fellows, and stout they were, since the bump start method often required as many as ten or more attempts to get the V8 burbling and barking. Curtiss climbed into the saddle, positioned his goggles and gripped the handlebars, perhaps glancing down once more at the Goodrich tires biting into the beach sand, and then nodded. Fortunately, it was not the horrendously humid Florida summer months, and the two men hurled Curtiss and his V8 two-wheeler down the beach and into the history books. Taking the two miles to reach full speed, Curtiss was clocked at 136.3 mph in the timed section of the course. He would be the first man to travel one mile in 25.25 seconds, a feat of mechanical design and personal courage that earned him the title of the “fastest man on earth.” Ironically, the record was considered unofficial due to a potentially fatal mechanical problem that precluded it from running the course again under official observation. In other words, the bike broke down after only one completion through the course. The skilled and coolheaded rider that he was, Curtiss was able to bring it to a halt from the 90mph—at which

moment parts had begun flailing about. The matter was reported in the February 9, 1907 issue of Scientific American (and we quote): “THE FASTEST AND MOST POWERFUL AMERICAN MOTOR BICYCLE. What is unquestionably the most powerful as well as the fastest motor bicycle ever built in this country made its appearance at the races at Ormond Beach recently; but owing to the breaking of a universal joint and subsequent buckling of the frame, this machine made no official record. It was built by Mr. G. H. Curtiss, a well-known motorbicycle maker, with the idea of breaking all records. The machine was fitted with an 8-cylinder air-cooled V-motor of 3640 horsepower. ... The total weight of the complete machine was but 275 pounds, or 6.8 pounds per horsepower. In an unofficial mile test, timed by stopwatches from the start by several persons who watched through field glasses a flag waved at the finish, Mr. Curtiss is said to have covered this distance in 26. 25 seconds, which would be at the rate of 136.3 miles per hour - a faster speed than has ever been made before by a man on any type of vehicle. Unfortunately, before this new mile record could be corroborated by an official test, the universal joint broke while the machine was BTR 54 | BORNTORIDE.COM
going 90 miles an hour. ...” In addition, armchair pundits of the day reportedly snorted with disbelief espousing their firm belief that is was a hoax or fable since no mortal man could breathe at the reported speed. It would be the V8s one and only day in the sun, the only time Glenn Curtiss would take it up to speed. But once was enough. On July 23, 1930, at age 52 Glenn Hammond Curtiss who had so often slipped the surly bonds of Earth, did indeed breath his last breath succumbing unexpectedly to an embolism after successful surgery for appendicitis. The heart attack was also linked to the stress from ongoing litigation. His body now rests in his birthplace of Hammondsport, New York, in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. As for his vaunted V8 motorcycle, a bolt for bolt replica of the ferocious machine was built by the Mercury Aircraft Co. and is now on display at the Curtiss Museum. If you want to see the real McCoy, you’ll find it at the new Smithsonian Steven F. UdvarHazy Center located adjacent to the Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, VA (www. nasm.si.ed.u). As a poignant postscript, we are told by the Curtiss Museum that several of the engine’s internal parts were recycled
by Curtiss into other projects, so in a way it lives on as does the almost legendary achievements of Glenn H. Curtiss. Curtiss Museum: Located on Lake Keuka in Hammondsport, New York, the museum’s 57,000 sq ft features the full spectrum of Glenn Curtiss’s contributions. On display are his many aircraft designs as well as his bicycles and motorcycles including a faithful reproduction of the record breaking V8. For more information call (607) 569-2160 or contact the Museum Director Trafford Doherty via trafford@linkny.com. Thursday, January 24, 1907. Ormond Beach, Florida. Glenn H. Curtiss, age 29, sits astride the test bench for his new V8 269 cubic inch aircraft engine. When all was said and done, Curtiss was clocked at 136.3 mph in the timed section of the course, a feat of mechanical design and personal courage that earned him the title of “The Fastest Man in the World.” As the Curtiss Museum director Traff Doherty comments, “It must have sounded like the Wrath of God!” By Paul Garson Photography courtesy of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, The Glenn H, Curtiss Museum, Roy Kidney and Jack Carpenter

Greetings Lady Riders! Did you know that 27% of motorcycle riders are women? That percentage just keeps increasing! My name is Wendy LaForce. I am the Sun Coast District Coordinator for Stilettos on Steel and Public Relations/Marketing Representative/Good Will Ambassador for Born To Ride and Born To Ride Women’s World. This is an amazing opportunity for me to share my love for motorcycle riding with the female element of our biker community. I am here to help you! Life’s too short to let dreams sit idle. Make every day count. Take the course. Learn how to ride. Make your dreams come true. Contact me today to get started. Stilettos on Steel provides membership and networking services to female motorcycle riders all over the United States. Our driving desire is to help women who dream of riding to take the next step in becoming a motorcycle rider. Our more experienced members enjoy working with new riders to help them hone the skills learned in their riding class and prepare them for adventures on the open road with their new Stiletto Sisters. I have met so many amazing women each one writing their own life story adventure by adventure, since starting my own chapter of Stilettos on Steel back in May of 2016. We have grown to 115 members in 5 chapters and we ride unapologetically deep! We empower one another’s uniqueness, strength, and peace of mind. We accept every female motorcyclist for who she is. We don’t judge but encourage each step in her journey. FEATURED MEMBER OF THE MONTH: Robin Hawk (aka The Enforcer) CoRegional Coordinator Nature Coast Chapter Robin is a walking recruitment poster.
She joined with little expectations. She was fortunate enough to have her husband as a riding partner and figured she might find a couple of riding lady friends. What she found has been life-changing for her. She never realized how much she would enjoy the Stilettos on Steel Sisterhood. She rapidly became a Co-Regional Coordinator
and trusted her new sisters enough to just let her hair down and relax. Her personality has blossomed, and she will never look back. She has made a promise to the Nature Coast Chapter members that she will be transparent, honest, kind, and positive as their leader. Her Co-Regional Coordinator Mariann Hall has the same level of integrity. They make a solid team. Even though they lead the Nature Coast Chapter, they love to support the efforts of all the Sun Coast District because we are sisters. We all ride as one. Here’s to the power of positive women unafraid to conquer on 2-3 wheels! We’re gearing up for our largest event yet! Spyke & Mike Daytona, Here We Come
What a great month it was for us, my BTR friends! The Pinellas Park Bikefest and Thunder by the Bay were both huge successes. The weather was perfect, and attendance was off the chain. We ran into so many old friends and made a lot of new ones. Mike stopped counting at 1000 great Kodak moments that were taken. I got to jam on stage with Angie and the Den of Thieves doing their original and infamous Heavy Metal Wings at the Bikefest. Then, next weekend when the Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band, Nothin’ Fancy, ended their show with Free Bird, Mike and I had our chance to ‘fly’ with longtime friend and lead singer Tommy Roxx. If you missed those two great events, make sure you put it on your bucket list for next year. Mike breaks in, “now that Daytona is right around the corner and the scoot is purring like a kitten, I can’t wait to get your feathered ass back out there and hanging with that crowd. This year we’ve been invited to the Cackleberry Campground just across from the Cabbage Patch. It’s the home of the big rooster and he has requested your presence. Not only do they have tons of vendors, The Wall of Death, and just about every crazy contest you could ever want to see. They will also have the Dragon Babes, fire and burlesque show that’s world famous and something not to miss. Headlining Saturday night will be a Straitjacket Smile, one of our favorite bands. I’m just curious what that rooster has in store for you.” I squawk, ‘I’m not sure either, but I’m always up for some new bird meet and greet.’ Mike proclaims, “well it’s Daytona, so I’ll be watching you and your drink closely making sure he doesn’t slip nothing into either.” I cackle, ‘speaking of slipping and the Cabbage Patch, that’s the place where we were sitting at the bar waiting for coleslaw wrestling BTR 64 | BORNTORIDE.COM
to start and a blonde was crawling around under the barstools. I remember the barkeep questioning her, what are you doing? Then she replied, I dropped my diamond ring and I’m looking for it. Then he asked her, did you drop it around here? And I’ll never forget her answer: No! I dropped it in the Port-O-John, but the light is better out here.’ Mike replies, “only at the Cabbage Patch. ... But, do you remember when we were hanging out on Main St. in front of Dirty Harry’s, where the Holy Rollers who sometimes dress as priests, would be yelling into a bullhorn and that drunk came staggering out of the bar?” I cackle, ‘yes! He wobbled up to them saying, hey your holiness, I’m Jesus Christ! One of them said to him, no my son, you’re not. Then, I vividly remember him yelling back: look, I can prove it. Come follow me! That’s when we followed him and the two priest wanna-be’s back into the bar. And I’ll never forget the bartender saying: Jesus Christ! You back here again? I recall getting the hell outta there so fast that the flying bibles just missed us before hitting the drunk biker.’ Mike and I laughed so hard then rode around for a while stopping at Crooks Den, a little dive bar on Orange Avenue. After parking the scoot, Mike gets distracted by some tourist and forgets I’m on his shoulder. Before going in, I poop down his back with it ending up on the steps. He grabs two of three chairs at the bar, orders pineapple juice for me, and a cold one for himself. A few minutes later another drunk walks up, slips on the pile of poop nearly falling, wipes his foot on the step, then staggers in. He sits in the open seat beside us and orders a drink. A few minutes later, a professional pole dancer walking in slips on the poop and falls right on top of it. She cleans herself off as best as possible and stands at the bar beside him. Then I recall the drunk saying to her, ‘I did that!’ She turns and slaps him so hard that he falls off the bar stool, gets up, then leaves. Quickly the bartender yelled out, good for you Destiny! A round of drinks for the bar, courtesy of the drunk, he left his credit card!’ Mike proclaims, “well, I think the funniest one of all was when we were at Boot Hill Saloon and sitting inside next to the band that was playing some blues. There was a guy that came in, sat down beside us, and questioned the bartender: ‘I’ve heard you’ve got the best bathrooms in town. My buddy, who was sitting right here last night, told me you have golden urinals. I’ve been in all the stalls and haven’t found one yet. Where are they?’ Just then the band took a break. The bartender turns and yells to the lead singer, ‘hey Ricky! I’ve got a lead on the guy who ruined your sax!’ Mike replies, “OK my feathered friend. Finish typing, pack your bag and get ready to fly. Speaking of flying, would a fly without wings be called a walk?” I squabble, dude! You’re not in your right mind and your left is pretty crowded. The answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind. It’s time to get your knees in the breeze, my wings in the wind, and the Fat Bird 2 wheels’ rolling down the road. Daytona here we come! SPYKE

Ray V. Gordon is the owner and founder of a new business based in SW Florida called Leather Lid Inserts. He’s coined the phrase “We take the sag out of the bag” because that is exactly what they do. Ray has been riding motorcycles since he was 14-years-old and has watched the motorcycle industry grow and is glad to be a part of what it is today. After 35 years of owning and operating a successful aluminum company in Fort Myers, Ray sold the business so he could retire— he thought and bought himself a new Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic. And just like everyone else with leather saddlebags his bags started to sag and cave-in. He saw a need to fix this
problem. Ray says, “Starting this new business was something I just fell into by fixing my own saddlebags, and then friends of friends and others wanted me to fix their saddlebags too!” As an inventor and entrepreneur, Ray took his creative background and put his skills to work by experimenting with several different types of materials to finally come up with a patented lid and bag reinforcement kit that is designed to help keep the original shape of any leather saddlebag made on the market. So, if you’re tired of looking at your caved-in leather saddlebags, or if you have brand-new bags and want to prevent them from ever caving-in, please keep Leather Lid Inserts in mind.
