You should be especially aware at intersections, where other vehicles can cross your path of travel. There are many things to scan for, including traffic devices, road surfaces, and the traffic and pedestrians around you. In a slow, tight turn, such as turning around in a parking lot, it helps to counterweight by leaning in the opposite direction of the motorcycle and direction of the turn. Route 66--the fabled ribbon of asphalt and concrete still winds its way across the country from Chicago to L.A. And it has also wound its way into the very soul of America. About one minute into listening to Jim Bush’s bike and tattoo story I knew it traveled beyond the norm, if norm is ever used in the world of tattooing and custom bikes. The Bolingbrook, Illinois resident is a walking and talking monument for a major slice of American culture. He’s covered, figuratively speaking, with nearly 2,500 miles of ink stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles. To be specific, he’s paved in the history of the famous Route 66. transcontinental roadway and the subject of countless stories, books, and songs -- not forgetting that famous 1960s TV show of the same name. Before we head down that road, a background check on Jim reveals that while he’s an engineer by training he’s an expert in “Loss Prevention” for commercial and industrial Fortune 500 companies. He adds, “It’s a career that pretty much will put you to sleep. It involves engineering work for an

insurance company that insures factories against business interruption.” Jim says its best to leave that explanation as it stands without delving further, and I agreed! My interest was his ink and bike story. The ink motoring down his arms is an incredible profusion of indelible images. It all started years ago when Jim decided to get his first tat, something patriotic. “I was just going to get a little American eagle and that was going to be it.” He began researching

through all the images but here’s some highlights. On Jim’s left arm there’s a turquoise ’55 Chevy with a license plate that reads 2448 that commemorates Route 66’s total mileage. The Standard Oil gas station attendant on his right arm is the image of his grandfather. “That filling station opened in the early 1950s on Route 66. It’s still there, owned by my family. My grandfather’s sons still work there with my cousins.” And if you look carefully you’ll find a Ferris wheel on Chicago’s Navy pier. Walking up to that Ferris wheel, Larry has drawn the figures of Jim, his wife, and his youngest son. T H I N K F O R YO U R S E L F Here we are in October and one of my favorite times of the year. Heading into fall with cooler weather, and of course, Halloween coming up. With colder weather moving in around the country, it’s time for some of us to start planning whether to winterize our bikes for the cold weather or to figure out what we’re gonna wear to stay warm. I for one ride all year round so I guess that doesn’t really apply to me. I know others that follow suit but we are fortunate with our weather down here in Florida. I think we are more concerned with how to stay dry than stay warm. Well, on with the topic of the day. I saw a movie clip online of a social media post and it was about a couple of politicians debating for some form of election. During that time, they were asked what makes America so great. The first two candidates gave the usual blanket feel good answers such as because we have freedom and so on. The third candidate, when pressed, gave a totally unexpected response to the question. He sounded off a whole line of statistics that more or less showed that our standing in things like science, math, healthcare, childbirth etc. etc. demonstrate our lack of being the greatest nation on earth. Anyone that’s ever read my articles before know my standing and feelings about our

country. I do not believe that statistics alone demonstrate a country’s greatness in a global venue. Maybe the actuarial types may gauge everything according to statistics, but I take it a step further. I believe what makes the United States the greatest country in the world are its citizens. I’ve never stated that I personally believe that we aren’t the greatest. We may not be statistically what some would consider the greatest, but nobody will beat the heart and soul of a patriotic United States citizen. Our beliefs and pride in our country past, present, and hopefully future, will always be that beacon that all other countries strive to achieve.

It appears we are now inundated with people who weren’t willing to stay in their own country and fix their problems and in return have brought a majority of those issues they had at their home country into the United States. Unfortunately, misinformation, lies, deceit, and double talk are the standard. Our sources of information that is fed to us on a daily basis is through a very broken set of news agencies.

Your GPS May be Spying on You By Matt Danielson, The Motorcycle Law Group

Beware. Your GPS may be collecting evidence against you. More and more motorcyclists today are using GPS (Global Positioning Systems) to plan trips, get directions and keep track of miles traveled. However, keep in mind that if you are in a motorcycle accident, you may be collecting evidence that could be used against you in both a criminal and civil trial. Most GPS systems allow you to keep track of your speed. As such, they can be used as evidence in court. I have come across jurisdictions which, at the scene of an accident when speed is a question, will seize a crash victim’s GPS, get a search warrant, and download the information BTR 18 | BORNTORIDE.COM

pertaining to speed. Such action does more than subject the crash victim to a speeding ticket. It can, if the injured party was speeding, put their ability to collect damages for their injuries at risk. That means, if the party who injures you can show that you were in some way at fault in causing the accident, then depending on which state you were injured in, your claim can be reduced, or outright denied. Keep in mind that I am in no way suggesting that you should not use a GPS on your motorcycle. I am merely suggesting that if you do, keep in mind that depending on the system and how you use it, you could be collecting evidence that could

eventually be used by a party that injures you to avoid paying for the injuries they caused. Covid put a stop to many motorcycle events in 2020 and the Central Georgia Police Memorial Ride in Macon, Georgia was one of them. After a year and a half of work organized by the American Legion Riders Post 3, it went ahead on schedule with their 1st memorial ride in 2021. “Born to Ride” magazine was proud to have been one of the major sponsors. Starting from the Macon, Georgia Harley Davidson Dealership, the ride was escorted by a team of motorcycles from the Georgia State Patrol, followed by Georgia State Patriot Guard Riders Captain, “Big Don’ Wilson on his patriot mural and

flag adorned Harley dresser, flying a large “Thin Blue Line” flag. After registration, the welcome and safety briefing was given by “Big Don”, Doug McCallum, Director of American Legion Riders Post 3 and Bibb County Sheriff, David Davis. 196 registered American Legion, Blue Knights, Patriot Guard riders from all over the State, as well as those riders that support law enforcement lined up in front of the dealership and went on a 60 miles escorted ride, first through a impressive gauntlet of flags that hung from fire trucks and ended at the Macon American Legion Post 3. At the American Legion there was

a BBQ lunch, silent auction, a drawing for a shotgun and a myriad of door prizes, accompanied with entertainment from a band. The proceeds from this event went to Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) a National organization whose mission statement is “Rebuilding shattered lives of survivors and co-workers affected by lineof-duty deaths.” I have had first hand contact with Georgia COPS Director, Roger Parker, who came to the aid of the family of a fallen Dougherty County officer, Lt. Cliff Rouse. In the Dougherty County area we have a similar memorial ride each year since 2011 that donates much of the money raised to Georgia COPS. We also travel to the families of fallen officers within the State and present them with some of the funds raised by the ride. Much of the organization and ideas for the Central Georgia Police Memorial Ride came from this ride when Director McCallum got information about the Rouse Ride from then Chairman, Don Cheek, retired Dougherty County Police Chief. In 2020 Nationwide, there were 364 total line of duty deaths, 20 in Georgia. So far in 2021 Nationwide, there have been 150 total line of duty deaths, 12 in Georgia. Our group of 26 riders of combined Sylvester American Legion Riders Post 335, Blue Knights III and Independent Harley Riders Assn. from around the Albany, Georgia area stopped off at different areas along the 110 mile route up to Macon, picking up riders. We stopped off at the new Buc ee’s trunk stop off I-75 Warner Robins for a break. If you have never been to Buc ee’s, it is a gigantic travel center with home to hundreds of gas pumps and a dizzying array of snack and prepared foods that originated, of course, in Texas. Now with 40 stations, it is now a “travel cult” for truck and four wheel travelers. From the amount of people that were in this, bigger than a Walmart Supercenter, you would never have thought there had been a pandemic.

This was one of these trips when I was approached at Buc ee’s by a man travelling cross country on his 2005 Heritage Softail, loaded down in back with stuff he was carrying on his road trip. He asked what was going on with all our bikes and I told him we were going to Macon Harley for the police memorial ride and told him he was welcome to come along with us. Myron Bryant was Navajo Indian who left his reservation in Shonto, NE Arizona and had ridden down to Phoenix, NE up to Gallup, Albuquerque on I-40 and I-20 and we caught him coming up on I-75S enroute to Shepardsville, near Louisville, KY. Myron followed us and participated in the whole event. It is amazing who you meet on your travels. It is part of the reason why I ride to events all across the country. —Paul “Gadget” Murray

In some cases “the older the more horrible” comes to mind when dealing with these movies. This one was produced in 1968, and rates right (down) there with the best of the worst! The plot bears more than a few similarities to Satan’s Sadists (which I have previously reviewed for BTR). In this case, it’s Shayne, the psychotic female leader of The “Mini Skirts” played by Diane McBain and her hair-do, stalking the innocent young couple along with her ‘gang’ members. It seems that “Jeff” the man she’s after used to be “her guy,” but he got wise, dumped his rodeo/biker buddies and married some hot brunette girl from the local bank. This in my opinion was a weird mix. The connection involving ‘biker’ girls and rodeo guys never seemed to materialize. It looked more like a ‘hippie’ flick than a poorly made biker film. Anyway, here’s my best

shot at explaining the plot. … Just as Jeff, was preparing apply the pork to his new bride “Connie” all his old pals and the “Mini-Skirts” arrive at his camper trailer to party. This of course leads to a major fistfight, where Jeff and his new bride suffer the worst of the melee. Later Shayne the maniacal jilted blonde (and her hair-do) convinces the other ne’er-do-wells to hang around with her, and continue to torture Jeff and Connie. As they chase them up a mountain road Jeff swerves and runs “LG” off the road crashing his motorcycle into a deep chasm. They return to find him dead, and decide to leave, but some boy scouts see all the action. The cops come later, and haul LG off. (You don’t see too much of the cops in this one oddly. ...) Later on, the gang finds Jeff and Connie camped out, and a couple of the guys rough Connie up while Jeff is out walking around. More psycho-babble from Shayne leads the gang to keep the couple trapped in the trailer with a rifle. That only works for a while, as Jeff tries to rig something up with the propane bottle, and the stove in the camper. As usual in these films one of the members turns on the other. In this case it’s Shayne’s sister, who wants to release Jeff and his bride and return to town. She knocks one of the rodeo rednecks out, and hatches a plan with Jeff and Connie. As she dons Connie’s clothes, the couple escapes while she fires at the gang from inside the trailer. The gang retaliates with Molotov cocktails, leading to one of the ubiquitous gags where a stunt man wears a fire suit and runs around the desert while flaming away. Anyhow, I’m not sure where the beer (or the empty bottles) originally came from, but the blast from the exploding propane kills Shayne’s sister. In the end two of the gang chase Jeff and Connie through the desert, and Shayne’s motorcycle slips on the edge of a ravine and crashes down several hundred feet. Shayne is holding on to the edge for dear life and begs Connie to save her. Connie grasps Shayne’s hand but well you know … she kinda lets go as Jeff approaches, and the couple watches as Shayne tumbles to her death. As typical in these old reels, most of the actors were totally unconvincing. I found myself thinking- these aren’t real bikers or rodeo dudes! These are simply bourgeois B-movie Hollywood types earning a living at ruining their future careers. I think that during most of the viewings however. Biker exploitation? No. Waste of good Mylar? Probably. You watch it and decide for yourself. I can only recommend this piece if you have a burning desire to see hot Sixties chicks in mini-skirts, go-go boots and huge hair. I did like the old Honda and Triumph motorcycles, and of course since there was Budweiser, (still not sure where it came from) it got one star. It runs 82 minutes, is available on DVD from MGM’s ‘Midnight Movies’ series, and I can only (in my right mind) give it 2 stars because there was a glaring lack of nudity. (The second star appears because I LOVE cat-fights!) So grab a Bud and some popcorn, and we’ll see ya next month!

BAD DAY AT THE QUICKIE MART

Hey, hey, my BTR friends. I was just chatting with Mike, hanging out in the sanctuary at Paradise, watching the birds fly over the Lanai and wondering if they really get any enjoyment out of all that flapping. A few months ago he took me to the beach to practice my hanging eight in the surf and try flying in the Gulf breeze. I’ve been surfing for a while and getting pretty good at it but, the flying part is for the birds. I kept crash landing and getting a beak full of sand. I just don’t know why they do it. For me, it was a whole lot of movement and not moving very far. Also, the soreness I experienced in my wings the next few days was brutal. Mike chitters, “I love it when the waves hit my feet and the sand is my seat, but you know Spyke, I saw the similar thing with humans. Guys and gals running up and down the beach for what? Shore life’s a beach and no one wants to get tide down but it’s only the beach. What do they think, fish are chasing them? They’re going to catch a seagull? Running so the sun doesn’t burn them as much as sitting? So many unanswered questions, and like the beach, life around us is filled with many things to ponder.” Mike babbles on, “Just the other morning, I went to the Quickie Mart to get a drink and as I walked up, I noticed two police officers BTR 38 | BORNTORIDE.COM

watching a woman smoking while pumping her gas. I saw her and thought; ‘Is this lady stupid, crazy, or both, especially with the police standing RIGHT there.’ Anyways, I minded my own business and went in for a cold one. As I was paying, I heard loud screaming coming from outside. Man, Spyke, I’m talking violent death screams! Like the ones I hear from you when I take away your unfinished bowl of nuts. I looked out the storefront window and saw the woman’s arm was on fire! She was swinging it around, running in circles and going crazy! After paying for my drink and walking out the door, the officers had the woman on the ground and were putting out the fire. Then, they threw handcuffs on her and shoved her into the patrol car.” “I’VE BEEN SURFING FOR A WHILE AND GETTING PRETTY GOOD AT IT BUT, THE FLYING PART IS FOR THE BIRDS. I KEPT CRASH LANDING AND GETTING A BEAK FULL OF SAND.”

“I was thinking, ‘They’re going to arrest her? Shouldn’t she be in an ambulance, not a patrol car?’ Being the nosy person that I am, I asked the officer what they were arresting her for. One looked at me dead serious and said, ‘Waving a firearm in public!’ Without trying to get their knickers out of a knot and me into one, I just shut my mouth, turned and quickly walked back to the truck.” I squawk, “Life sucks when you go down in flames. I’ve seen you crash and burn several times. Your latest and greatest had me gagging, literally.” Mike frowns and says, “Dude, you talkin’ about last month when I choked on that hot burrito, dropped it between my legs, swerved off the road and ended up in a ditch?” I cackle, “No, you poor excuse for a Mexican jumping bean. It was that late night stop at the diner. I know you won’t spill the beans correctly, so I’ll just let the readers know how it went. Mike was starving so he pulled over to get something to eat. He took me inside and there was only one old man

sitting, not eating his food. We sat beside him and waited 10 minutes for someone to appear from the kitchen. After no one came, he turned and asked the old man, who was staring deeply into his chili, ‘If you’re not going to eat that, I’m starving. Do you mind if I do?’ The old man slowly rotates, pushes the bowl Mike’s way and says, ‘Go for it, young whippersnapper.’ Mike then picks up a spoon and starts slurping that chili up like he hasn’t eaten in days. As quickly as he started, Mike devoured most of it, then suddenly stopped. Seeing a dead mouse in the bottom of the bowl, he instantly barfs the chili back up into the bowl. The old man leans over, looks at him and says, ‘I was just as hungry as you and that’s as far as I got also!’ Mike wiped the spittle from his chin, picked me up and we both headed out the door.” Mike babbles, “Man, Spyke, I don’t know what I was thinking but I was definitely a few peas short of a casserole that night.” I hoot, “A few peas short? If you had another brain, it would be lonely. While I was sitting on your shoulder as you walked out, I could hear the Gulf breeze blowing out your ear. You actually fell out of the stupid tree and hit every branch on the way down!

I was so relieved when you got your knees under the keys, my wings out the passenger window, your vomit-laden head out the other, and the trucks’ wheels rolling down the road.” — SPYKE

CHRISTIAN MOTORCYCLISTS ASSOCIATION Riding a motorcycle is a great way to learn some of life’s lessons. This is especially true for young people learning to ride a dirt bike Hopefully, the art of riding a bicycle has already been mastered. Many of the things that one learned on a bicycle can be the foundation for riding a motorcycle successfully. I started riding in the late 1960s and the motorcycles were primitive compared to today’s awesome hardware. Thankfully, we no longer need to mix the gas and oil on dirt bikes or street rides. We just fill the tank with quality fuel and away we go. The shock absorbers of today are incredible compared to those of days past, and it’s not as difficult to hang on while going through a bad pothole in the street, or through the whoops in the dirt. I have a friend who actually rode his full dresser Harley over an extension ladder that was laying in the road. He used his experience, got up on his floorboards, and just before hitting the ladder, he hit the throttle! Learning to ride can be full of difficulties and physical challenges. One must learn to lean the bike in tight curves, and power their way through, while making sure not to drop the bike, or put their foot down to keep the bike up. When riding, and in life, one must be careful to keep their eyes BTR 40 | BORNTORIDE.COM

focused on the terrain before them, being aware of rough ground, obstacles, or hills to climb. Endurance is important and perhaps harder on a dirt bike as the shaking and bouncing can be quite pronounced. There is even a special kidney belt that some riders may use to lessen the jarring impact. Road bikers can also use them for the longer rides. Stamina and durability are gained through practice and experience. One great benefit to learning to ride a bike is that there are numerous life lessons that apply not only to riding, but also to everyday life. The Bible tells us, in Romans 5:3 (NLT), that “You can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance.” There is even a class of motorcycles called trial bikes; they are ridden slowly and under much control, focusing on endurance and overcoming obstacles. Learning to keep our riding and our lives under control makes for a safer and more enjoyable ride through life. In life, we quite often face challenges and difficulties. When we practice our riding skills, as well as our life skills, we develop strength to conquer difficulties and successfully overcome life’s tests. And let’s not forget the source of our rejoicing, which comes from walking with the Lord. He will be there with you every step of the way! All you have to do is put your trust in Jesus.
