PERSONAL PROTECTIVE GEAR

Many activities and sports require protective gear. Riding a motorcycle does, too. Even a low-speed fall can leave you scraped, bruised or worse. Crashing at higher speeds and hitting the ground or another vehicle can be disastrous. Riding is more enjoyable when proper gear is used, and it can make a huge difference in a crash. Quality riding gear helps keep you comfortable and focused, helps keep your body protected, and may help you be much more visible in traffic. You want to be seen by car drivers. Your helmet and jacket should be brightly colored and have reflective material, especially if you ride at night. Consider clothing with body armor (rigid inserts that help in protect your spine, elbows, knees and other areas). The right gear helps in all riding conditions. In the event of a crash, it may reduce or prevent injuries. You should dress for a crash as well as for the ride. Every rider and passenger should wear a quality helmet built for riding a motorcycle. Added should be proper eye protection, sturdy over-the-ankle footwear with non-slip soles, long pants that will hold up in a slide, a good jacket, and full-fingered gloves. This is often referred to as ATGATT: All The Gear, All The Time. For more info, go to www.msf-usa.org

R.I.P

Your Legend Lives On

After 30 years in prison, I expected a changed world when I was finally allowed to go home. There were many technology changes like cell phones and personal computers, and “convenience” changes, like drive-thru restaurants and self-service gas stations. Those, I could understand and appreciate. And the modern motorcycles! What an experience that was to ride for the first time in 30 years. However, the most overwhelming change I encountered wasn’t good: I saw the destructive direction our country has taken in those three decades, all at the hands of the U.S. government. Over the past 30+ years, it has quickly morphed into the very thing this country’s citizens have fought against and died for over the last 200 years, both here and overseas. America is no longer a nation of “We the People” protected by the Constitution and Bill of Rights. America is now what the government and politicians so proudly refer to as “A Nation of Laws.” They are determined to make the Constitutional rights and protections this country was founded on a thing of the past. WHAT HAPPENED: The U.S. government’s power-mongers chose to follow the path of the Soviet Union, China, Germany and other dictatorial governments in the past. Those countries began their destructive rule by declaring segments of its populations to be undesirables who didn’t deserve the same rights as everyone else (consider the harassment of today’s motorcycle riders). Those governments then began a propaganda blitz to demonize, discredit and dehumanize the selected groups. Once this was done, they persuaded other citizens to spy on the targeted groups and report

everything to government agencies. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN in the US: Our government and politicians have slowly taken away our constitutional rights and individual protections under the guise of protecting American citizens from harm. The government claims that in order to protect us, we must allow them to spy on us, and track and collect all of our private phone and internet conversations. Furthermore, our neighbors, doctors, and teachers are being pressured to report personal information about our families to these agencies. The sickest thing they have done so far is to adopt one of Hitler’s favorite programs and recruit American children to spy on and report on their own parents. Playing on our fears, particularly from the 9/11 tragedy onward, the government has pretended to benevolently protect us from harm. Instead, what they have accomplished is gaining almost total power and control over our lives. THEIR ATTITUDE ABOUT OUR RIGHT TO PRIVACY: To demonstrate how successful the government’s plan is, I’ll relate a conversation I recently had with a military officer working for Homeland Security. Bear in mind this man swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies both foreign and domestic. I asked him if he thought the government’s invasive collection and storage of everyone’s personal phone and internet conversations crossed the line. He said: “Why should people worry about it if they aren’t doing anything wrong?” Does anyone realistically believe the government will not manipulate or abuse the harvested information? Most of us know better.

WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT? Who or what will protect us from the government power-abusers and their unconstitutional practices? After the signing of the “Declaration of Independence,” no legal constraints were placed on the new U.S. government, which promptly got out of control. (Policing malicious politicians has always been a problem for America’s citizens.) In response, on September 17, 1787, our forefathers solved that problem. In their wisdom, they gave American citizens the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The Constitution and Bill of Rights were designed to keep an abusive government in check. But unlike criminal law, which is prosecuted by the government, enforcing constitutional law falls squarely on the citizens, who must become the prosecutors. I don’t advocate armed rebellion against the government. I believe constitutional law will trump the abusive laws set out by boughtand-paid politicians. Those same arrogant politicians don’t want you to know that laws are a two-edged sword that can cut both ways, and they have no immunity when it’s prosecuted properly. The fact that most people don’t understand how constitutional law works has made it possible for a select group of tyrants to escalate their misuse of power to an intolerable level. The government demands that the American citizens follow their law. It is time for the citizens to demand their government also follow constitutional law. Thousands attended the Great American Motorcycle Show at Atlanta’s Cobb Galleria in January, braving the cold and rain for an opportunity to browse the bikes and gear. Dealerships from across the South representing all the major brands were present- HarleyDavidson, Indian, Triumph, Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Ducati, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, MV Augusta, even Motus, and Ural. Every genre of riding was accounted for- tourers, cruisers, sport bikes, standards, vintage/classics, ADVs, motocross, even trials riding. Numerous custom builders and artists showcased their wares and work, including Southern Cycle, Southeastern Customs, J Daar Customs, ZB Customs, among others. Numerous apparel and destination companies attended, among them our friends at Diamond

Gusset Jeans Company, makers of superb riding pants. A bike show demonstrated the wide variety within the riding world, from radical modern customs to insane sport bikes, to impeccably restored old classics. The show-stopper was a hand-built trike by Southeastern Customs, which resembled a cross between a Sportster and a Shelby Cobra from the 1960s. With the departure a few years ago of the Progressive International Motorcycle Show from Atlanta (or the entire southeast, for that matter), the Great American Motorcycle Show fills the niche left behind for us here in the Deep South. Men and women, young and old, across all social-economic lines, sharing a common passionmotorcycling is alive and well in Dixie. Rob Brooks

Women’s World

SARAH ANDREA FROM STRASBURG

Ohio remembers riding in a car as a teen and seeing a woman on a motorcycle. “That’s so cool!” she thought. Growing up in a strict religious family she learned traditional family roles so when she married, she rode on back of her husband’s motorcycle without giving thought to riding her own. After Sarah started working for a motorcycle dealership, others encouraged her to take a safety riding class. She passed the class, got her license and bought a Honda Shadow as her first bike. She’s been riding for eleven years now and has a HarleyDavidson Softail Deluxe Heritage. Now she’s the Director of Operations and Training for Ohio Motorcycle Group which consists of four dealerships. Sarah finds the group a female-friendly workplace. There are two female general managers and women working as technicians and in service, parts and sales departments. The group holds an annual Ladies Adventure Weekend for women riders. When they needed additional

women to lead rides, Sarah stepped up. On one of the rides, the group stopped for lunch and as they were paying at the cash register a shy waitress stepped up and said, “My boss said I should talk to you.” The young woman dreamed of riding a motorcycle but didn’t know how to get BTR started. 26 | BORNTORIDE.COM The women who’d all ridden in on their bikes were eager to share their stories of learning to ride and encouraged her to BTR 18 | BORNTORIDE.COM

follow her dream. Sarah loves the camaraderie of female riders and how welcoming, encouraging and helpful they are to each other. As a coach and author of a book on career strategies; it wasn’t long before Sarah had an idea for a book about women who ride motorcycles in order to share stories and encourage others. Women Who Ride: Rebel Souls, Golden Hearts and Iron Horses was released early this year. It’s a compilation by and for women motorcycle riders. The book, available in paperback and on Kindle, features women from twenty-five states in the U.S. as well as women from Canada, Australia, and Thailand. They range in age from twenty-three to sixty-plus. There’s even a story submitted by a man. He wanted to make sure Sarah knew about Sadie Grimm who rode in a cross-country race from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to the town of Winnipeg Beach at age 19 and was the first woman in Canada to win a race open to men way back in 1914. There are three sections: Rebel Souls which includes stories of Finding Courage, I’m Too … and Cool Grandmas. The Golden Hearts section includes stories of Loving Support, Inspiration and Free Wind Therapy. The Iron Horses section includes stories of Oops!, Just Ride and Who Will I Ride With? The book is available on Amazon.com and at www.WomenWhoRideBook.com. Sarah says that writing the book has lead to meeting many amazing women. Her editor, Nicki Snyder, got her motorcycle license in 2008. Sheryl Roush, whom Sarah met at a Toastmasters event is a speaker and coach who encouraged her and guided her through the book writing process. Sheryl

introduced her to June Cline, the Southern, Savvy, Sassy Harley-riding Humorist who wrote the forward for the book. Liz Miller invited Sarah to appear on her Motorcycles & Misfits podcast which lead to her hearing from a wide variety of women who ride and either wanted to take part in the project or made an introduction to another rider. It’s meeting women like this and having them introduce her to others that Sarah loves. In the introduction, she says, “It is not however, just the riding that I have fallen in love with…It is the women who ride. They have this beautiful camaraderie that is hard to find anywhere else. They come together to ride and nothing matters about their personal lives except the fact that they ride.” If you’d like to submit a story for the next edition of Women Who Ride go to www. WomenWhoRideBook.com and follow the submission guidelines. Myra McElhaney If you would like info on Born To Ride Womens Club, Email info@borntoride.com

NEW HARLEY-DAVIDSON FORTY-EIGHT SPECIAL AND IRON 1200 SPORTSTERS

FUSE THROW-BACK DESIGN WITH MODERN PERFORMANCE

High Handlebars, Cool Graphics, and Garage-Built Attitude Harley-Davidson adds to the long legacy of its Sportster motorcycle line with the introduction of the Iron 1200 and Forty-Eight Special models. The latest in a line of 100 high-impact motorcycles the company plans to introduce by 2027, these new high-bar Sportsters combine throw-back styling trends from the custom-bike scene with the solid foundation of the Sportster platform and the punchy performance of the Evolution 1200 V-Twin engine. Since its introduction in 1957, Sportster motorcycles have been repeatedly reimagined, in the hands of both the Motor Company and bike owners: The Sportster as a bobber, a chopper, a scrambler and a café racer; as a hero on flat tracks and drag strips and road-race courses; as an accessible entry-point for first-time riders,

and as a custom-of-one cruiser. “Since its inception, the Sportster has offered the perfect combination of size, power and character that makes it appealing to so many different riders,” said Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson V.P. of Styling & Design. “A Sportster is a relatively easy bike to strip down and reinvent. What we’ve done to create the new Iron 1200 and Forty-Eight Special is what Sportster owners have been doing with their own bikes for generations.” New fuel tank graphics distinguish both the Iron 1200 and the Forty-Eight Special, and combine bold color stripes with a formal typeface, color and graphic elements originally popular in the 1970s. “The art on these two fuel tanks reflect contemporary trends we are seeing on custom bikes and in design in general, a move away from more complex and intricate art to a look that’s very simple and clean,”

said Richards. “It’s also important to note that these graphics respect the shape of the fuel tank and in the case of the Sportster, that tank shape is a classic design element in its own right.” Iron 1200™ The Iron 1200 recipe starts with power. A 1202cc Evolution® 1200 V-Twin engine delivers 36 percent more torque (73.0 ft. lbs. vs. 53.8 ft. lb.) than the 883 Evolution engine that powers the Iron 883, the original urban brawler in the Sportster family. The Iron 1200 brings more punch to the street fight – more power to blast away from green lights and more mid-range to muscle through traffic. More power means more rowdy fun. The satin-black Mini Ape handle bar is an essential element of the garage-built chopper look that adds instant attitude. This 1.0-inch diameter handlebar offers an 8.75-inch rise, 32-inch spread and 6.5-inch pull back, that

opens the rider triangle with a fist-in-thewind posture. The gloss black speed screen framing the headlamp is a West Coast styling influence that amplifies the attitude of the tall bars, is intended to offer some wind deflection at speed and provides a space for easy personalization. The fast-back Café Solo Seat flows to the rear fender and is shaped to help hold the rider in position when the torque of the Evolution 1200 kicks in. A classic 3.3-gallon Sportster fuel tank features multi-colored striped graphics that wrap around the tank profile. The dark engine finish helps draw the eyes to the bright tank graphics. Fuel tank paint color options include Vivid Black, Twisted Cherry and Billiard White, always contrasting with the Vivid Black speed screen. The entire powertrain has been styled with a popular color: black upper and lower rocker boxes, black exhaust and muffler shields, and black timer, primary and derby covers. Chrome pushrod tubes and tappet covers are the only brightwork and highlight the V-Twin engine shape. The Iron 1200 is finished with all-black 9-Spoke wheels (19inch front and 16-inch rear diameter) and a solid black belt guard and rear sprocket. The Harley-Davidson Smart Security System and anti-lock braking system (ABS) are factory-installed options for the Iron 1200 model. That 2.2-gallon “peanut” Sportster fuel tank features rows of bold, horizontal stripes framing a simple Harley-Davidson text logo. The fuel tank is available in three color options: Vivid Black, Wicked Red, and Billiard White. The Evolution 1200 engine features a black top end and an expanse of brilliant chrome below, including chrome primary, inspection and derby covers, and solid chrome muffler and exhaust shields. Chrome lower rocker boxes, pushrod tubes and tappet covers contrast with the black cylinders to highlight the V-Twin engine shape. ROCKIN’ TO THE OLDIES

Today’s modern motorcycles are outstanding in technology and performance, but there’s something magical about the old classics. … This past year I had the opportunity to work on an older bike, a 1969 Triumph T100. A friend had asked if I could help him get it running again. He told me the

bike would kick over after some tickling and kicking (it’s still a full kick-start), but not stay running more than about 30-40 seconds. Conceding that I am no master mechanic, yet, interested in seeing if I could bring it back to good health, I agreed to take a shot at it. I picked up the bike at his house and brought it home to see if I could breathe new life into the old girl. The first order of business was to check the battery and the plugs, all of which I replaced. Next, after examining and flushing the tank, I removed and disassembled the single Amal carburetor, thoroughly cleaning each part and “vatting” what I could in a can of carb cleaner. The carb had indeed been full of ethanol varnish, and the idle & air screws were all out of whack. After reassembling and reinstalling the old Amal, I contacted a veteran Triumph friend, Steve, who knows these old Brits like the back of his hand. If anyone could help me fine tune this antique, Steve could. BTR 30 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Steve arrived, and we set to work tuning the old carb. A few tweaks, turns, screw ins/outs, and within about 15 minutes, the old Brit was growling perfect and begging to be ridden. We obliged. Steve took her out first, blasting down the long, winding road that runs by the end of my driveway. I could hear the roar of the straight high pipes as he rode off out into the countryside that surrounds my home. Sometime later, he pulled back in, grinning ear to ear. “Running good,” he quipped. Next, it was my turn. To be honest, this was not only the oldest bike I had ever worked on; it was the oldest bike I had ever ridden. Growing up, my father had a 1972 Triumph TR6 650 that I learned to ride on. Over the years, I have ridden various 70s, 80s, 90s and newer bikes. So taking out this 1969 classic was a thrill for me—to work on, and now to ride. Donning my gear, I popped it into 1st and throttled off. I must confess, rolling on, shifting the clunky right-side gearbox, hearing the deafening roar of the left high straight pipes, did something to me as I blasted down the deserted road beyond my home. I felt a thrill, a rebellious nostalgia I had never experienced on a bike before. I’ve ridden some cool bikes over the years, with much more power and way better handling than this, but nothing compared to the feeling of this old, loud, shuddering and shaking piece of motorcycle history. The wind blasting in my face, I found myself howling in my helmet, unable to contain my sudden youthful enthusiasm with this bike. I felt like James Dean and Marlon Brando, careening down country roads on this old Triumph. Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild” was running through my brain. Seriously. It was raw,

visceral, like motorcycling used to feel—like it felt when my dad rode these bikes—like it should feel again. No wonder so many of the moto-brands are trying to recapture and deliver that feeling again, with the return of Cafés, Bobbers, Scramblers, Trackers, etc. Yet for all the efforts to bring back the nostalgia in modern livery, nothing can compare with “rockin’ to the oldies” on an original. Sure, they require constant care and maintenance. Sure, you have to be handy with a set of tools and carry them with you when riding these bikes for any time and distance. And sure, they “mark their territory” everywhere they are parked, they often leak so much. But after riding this T100, I’d be inclined to buy one myself now. Not as a daily rider, long distance horse, or track tool, mind you. But for those days when my “inner hooligan” is growling to get out, there is nothing so thrilling as these old beasts. They are worth every dollar, drip and busted knuckle to keep them on the road.

I did return the T100 to her rightful, and happy, owner. Eventually. A little reluctantly, of course. Time to start searching the classifieds. …

“Look, Charlie! We’ve had enough of your kind of help! Three hundred years of your bull_*_! From now on, we take care of our own!” hisses “Knifer,” black leader of The Choppers, a “diverse” biker gang squatting in Southern California. Knifer’s fed up with being stalked by Lieutenant Harper, a slender, black-clad law officer and member of the “white establishment.” So sets the rebellious tone of the critically mixed 1970 biker romp The Black Angels, a lesser-known but relevant slice of the vintage “Bikersploition” era. What’s surprising about the film is despite the title’s nod to “Blaxploitation,” the drama/ action primarily concerns a lilywhite biker gang: the deliciously monikered Satan’s Serpents. “Chainer” is the leader of Satan’s Serpents and dead-ringer for Peter Fonda. His fate is sealed when he lures Jimmy, a black rival member of The Choppers, into a perilous motorcycle jump that doesn’t end well. Chainer’s forced to confront The Choppers with Jimmy’s grim news that sets off a cleverly clandestine revenge spree. The Black Angels become a slow-burning showdown between Satan’s Serpents and The Choppers with the coppers led by Harper (The Black Angel), monitoring every move. A mysterious stranger in a Hardee hat called Johnny Reb cycles into the Serpent’s compound: an ancient western ghost town. Reb loads the gang up with LSD and quickly earns their trust – except for one skeptic – “Frenchy,” an upwardly mobile second-in-command figure with a great set of teeth (“choppers” – get it?). Frenchy, hottempered and no-nonsense has a line on Reb, but is he simply a free-wheelin’ Confederate with animosity toward colored folk, or does he have a more nefarious purpose? Amusing subplots of The Black Angels involve the aforementioned Lt. Harper and Chainer’s queer relationship with a masochistic, blonde girlfriend who berates him in order to get slapped, giggling wildly as she’s “punished.” “Do I get a spanking and go to bed with no dinner?” she nudges as she drives her high-heel into Chainer’s foot. He slaps her repeatedly, and she bites him. He calls her a “slumming nympho.” “Nympho maybe, slumming definitely! And I love every minute of it! Just tell me when! When! WHEN!!!” she pants in sizzling sexual exasperation! He then makes love to her in a restaurant while a gogo dancer gyrates. BTR 36 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Flashbacks pepper the story along, garnishing a backstory that explains the origins of Jimmy’s black supremacist hatred toward whitey. Another far more explicit flashback cruelly examines the assault of a young white woman who’s a self-proclaimed racist at the hands of two black men. The blonde, well-endowed Sacramentan is chained up and raped at knifepoint, while spewing racial slurs and spitting at her heartless tormentors. As a director, Laurence Merrick displays hits of true creativity and at times innovation. The chase scenes, though overlong, are well-executed and the roar of the bikes really becomes a character in itself. He incorporates fastmotion and a dizzying multitude of camera angles as the cycles speed by, one wonders how he was able to film this in only fourteen days! The acting is above-average for a B-picture, and it’s amazing how many actors he found who could ride really nice-looking choppers. Horror fans will note costar James Whitworth who was “Jupiter” in the late Wes Craven’s 1977 super-shocker The Hills Have Eyes. Whitworth plays Satan’s Serpent “Big Jim,” who early in the picture gets urinated on by smart-aleck Frenchy. Gritty director Laurence Merrick was an acting teacher whose student was the tragic, iconic beauty, Sharon Tate. The Black Angels is an exploitation film with bizarre relationships to the Charles Manson “Family” cult murders. While The Black Angels was in production in August of 1969, members of “The Family” begged for leftover catered food. There was an obvious fascination, so director Merrick visited the Spahn Ranch, where The Family squatted and shoot 16mm footage of their hedonistic, drug-tinged lifestyle, including interviews. This occurred both before and after the Tate/LaBianca murders. Merrick would later utilize the footage in his 1973 Academy Award-nominated documentary Manson. Highly recommended for vintage biker movie fans. I encourage all bikers to discover or revisit these great older cult movies. I happened upon this movie on the online subscription service Night Flight Plus. Old-timers may remember Night Flight as a hit counterculture show back in the 1980s and the early days of cable TV. Their online shelves are stocked with luscious drive-in and grindhouse favorites. The Black Angels is also available on DVD from Something Weird (Video). Andy Lalino-Biker Movie Review

The Far Side of the World Motorbikes in Indonesia

My wife and I enjoyed a 12-day trip to Indonesia this past year. I’ve made the trip several times in recent years with a nonprofit I help manage, 127 Legacy Foundation, and have always been fascinated with the culture of motorcycles over there. Some interesting observations from our trip abroad: The largest displacement engine I’ve ever found in Indonesia was 250cc. It’s an interesting contrast to the US, where, aside from scooters, a 250 is about the smallest you’ll find. The rider always wears a helmet, yet often passengers do not. Even multiple family members, including small children, will be helmetless, while the “wrist” will wear one. We spent a few days around Tokyo, Japan prior to continuing on to Jakarta. I was startled to find very few motorcycles, including scooters, in Japan, whether in the city or country. Ironic, that the nation BTR 38 | BORNTORIDE.COM

with four of the top producing brands in the world (Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki), and yet so few of their own citizens actually ride. During a traffic jam in Jakarta, looking

back through the tunnel was astounding. There appeared to be hundreds rolling our way - one large, moving mass of “man and machine”.

The traffic was stopped in front of our hotel, but that did not prevent riders from throttling through and around, in a constant stream. A teen riding home from school with a parent, outside the city of Kupang, Timor. Amazing how often I saw multiple riders with no helmets or other protective gear for the passengers. Often the only means of transportation for entire families, children are squeezed onto seats between parents and older siblings, often up to 4-5 on a bike and helmetless, as evidenced here. These three-wheeled motortrikes are common throughout the cities as delivery vehicles on the surface streets. Small-bore motorcycles and scooters clog the already packed streets of downtown Jakarta, Indonesia by the thousands, flowing through traffic by lane-splitting, curbjumping, and red-light running. Even out in the city of Kupang, near the far eastern end of the Indonesian island chain on Timor, scooters and small motorcycles are a way of life. Traffic is not as bad as in Jakarta, so streets are easier to navigate with two wheels or four. I’d feel more comfortable riding out here! Taken from a transit bus we were on, the riders on these diminutive mounts, men & women, young & old, were fearless in traffic. Several small motorbikes parked outside an orphanage we support on the western Indonesian island of Sumatra, in the city of Minas. They teach the boys how to repair them, to give them a means of earning a living upon graduating out at 18. The shop behind the orphanage, where the kids practice their skills at motorcycle repair and maintenance. A friend at our orphanage in Minas, Sumatra let me cop a ride on his bike. Without an international drivers license, I was not allowed out on open roads but had a blast throttling around side streets and dirt roads. This Kawasaki was about the coolest little ride I saw in Sumatra. When the owner fired it up, I discovered it was a howling, smoking 2-stroke! McDonalds delivers in many parts of Jakarta, via scooters like these. One of the doctors at a clinic we helped

build near Kupang, Timor owned this Honda. And yes, I had to take a spin on it. Such a cool little bike! As with much of Asia and the Pacific Rim, motorbikes in Indonesia are a necessary element of life. As the 4th most populous nation on the planet, the Indonesian archipelago of islands is among the world’s greatest purchasers of motorcycles and scooters. As a rider myself, it’s just another reason I enjoy traveling to the far side of the world. Many kindred spirits abroad! By Rob Brooks & Shayne Russell BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 39

4 Things to help your family if you’re involved in an accident By Matt Danielson, The Motorcycle Law Group

When a serious car or motorcycle accident occurs, it is often a family member or significant other who is contacting an attorney on behalf of the injured party. While I hope neither you nor your family are ever in this situation, all motorists should share vital information with a trusted emergency contact to help ensure they’re adequately prepared in the event of an accident. Below is a list of information to keep up to date and share with your family member or significant other. 1. Medical Insurance: Provide your emergency contact with the name of your insurance company and your policy number. Often, it’s easiest to give them a photocopy of your health insurance card. ? 2. Medical Information: Do you have any known allergies? Are there items in your medical history that would be important for an emergency medical team to know, such as current medications or a history of heart disease? Make sure your emergency contact is kept up to date on your medical conditions. ? 3. Personal Injury Attorney: What is the name and telephone number of a trusted personal injury attorney that your emergency contact can call – even for some guidance prior to formal representation? The sooner your attorney can be called the better. 4. Power of Attorney: If you are seriously injured and unable to make decisions for a period of time, a power of attorney designation allows a loved one to carry out tasks that you would normally do, such as paying bills or cashing checks. It also allows a loved one to make medical decisions for you. Power of attorney is important

even for those who are legally married. Once completed, it needs to be signed in the presence of a notary public. Visit our website (MotorcycleLawGroup.com) and select “Prepared Rider Kit” to download a free Power of Attorney template. The majority of riders go each year without an accident, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be prepared in case you’re ever involved in one. Having this information readily available can be critical, especially immediately after the accident occurs. As always, if you have any further questions or comments concerning this article or any other matters concerning your rights as a motorcyclist, please do not hesitate to contact me. Matt Danielson is a partner at the Motorcycle Law Group, a personal injury law firm whose attorneys all ride motorcycles and practice in VA, WV, NC, SC and GA. Matt has successfully represented clients in cases from simple property damage to complex multi-million dollar personal injury claims. He is also a lobbyist, adjunct professor and works with motorcycle rights organizations. To learn more about the Motorcycle Law Group, visit MotorcycleLawGroup.com.

Christian Motorcyclists Association Trust and You too will get the Power During the vicious cold fronts, we’ve faced in the last few months I got a lesson about my bike, as well as about my life. Strangely enough, the bike didn’t go anywhere during the experience. Part of the education had to do with moving the bike for different reasons. I had to back the bike out of the garage, no big task, but being sick and feeling poorly for a while, it had been a time since I had been on my ride. Just picking it up off the kickstand seemed to be a monumental effort. I know I was recovering from the crud but did not expect it to take so much effort and for me to have so little strength. Once it was time to put the bike back into the garage, I discovered another training taking place. Since there is a slight incline from the driveway to the garage floor, and the bike itself weighs over 800 pounds, I hit the trusty start button. There were a few groans made by the ride, a losing effort to start up, and a final grunt of defeat. No power! I had spent time before the freeze warnings covering the outside spigots, setting some of them to drip all night. I had brought in what plants I could, and I went to turn on the heater BTR 48 | BORNTORIDE.COM

in the travel trailer, only to find out I was out of propane. Thank goodness we had some extra 20 pounders for the grill, and I hooked one up and then had glorious heat in the travel trailer! There’s nothing quite like power in a 20-pound canister. With all that preparation, I did manage to miss a critical task. I forgot to hook the trickle charger up to the bike. The cold snap killed the reserve battery power, and there I sat in the middle of the driveway, on a dead bike! Fortunately, I thought to go ahead and hook up the power charger, and a few hours later I could fire up the bike and put it away. The power made all the difference! There is an incredible offer in the Bible, in 2 Timothy 1:7, that tells us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” God denies us having to live in fear and adds three promises that are positive in nature. If you have a spirit of love and a sound mind and you allow God to overcome any fear that may try and take us captive, He will give us power. This power that He promises is to help us overcome any and all adversities we may face in life and emerge from difficult situations as the victor. What does it take to get this power? Trust in the Lord with all your heart and accept Him as your Savior. Then you too will get the power! In The Wind, Denny Dingler
