The 1st Annual Pit Row Expo took place during the weekend of October 4-6, at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Hosted by Tyler Hughey from The Paint Shop located in Covington, GA, and Robert Robinson, this show featured something special for all in attendance. The Pit Row Expo included live entertainment, including Carnival Crue, a Motley Crue tribute band, Night Train International, a Guns-N-Roses tribute band, The Psycho Devilles, and
others … just to name a few. Freedom Power Sports main stage held all the bands. Wow, they sounded GREAT! Captain and Maybelle were hosting the entertainment, along with their firebreathing and sword swallowing act. They are widely known from their appearances on Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Also, there were “Horror Film” guests including Bill Mosley, Robert Mukes and Michael Berrymen all from Rob Zombie movies.
Felissa Rose from Sleep Away Camp and Melissa Cowan from The Walking Dead. Up close and personal … autographs were available! All during the weekend was a Car and Bike show featuring some of the hottest cars, trucks, and motorcycles that the southeast has to offer. This was HUGE! Studying the awesome motorcycles at the show got me thinking of things that I could do to my Road King over the winter months. And it seems like the Paint Shop

Best arm, best leg, best belly, best back … you get the idea … big and small … lots of winners! Today, I don’t need another tattoo. But there is always next year. This year it was sure fun to watch the crowd and the artists. All in attendance are making plans now to attend next year’s expo. If you weren’t present for this year’s show, better think about all that you missed, and start making plans to attend next year’s show. I know that I’m gonna be there! JP

Did you hear the “Bagger Sound Off”? I don’t think that the Atlanta Motor Speedway was able to contain the sound of the heavyweight and lightweight baggers as they turned up the sound for all to hear … including the cars traveling down Hwy 41 going past the speedway. And
the folks enjoying the adjacent fair sure got an earful.zTattoos. Have I mentioned the tattoos, tattoo artists, tattoo contests, a whole room dedicated to tattoos? I’ve never seen so many tattoo artists together in one place. I’ve never seen so much skin art. Everywhere. These artists seemed to be busy all day. And all night. There must have been about a zillion artists, all with unique styles and techniques to please the crowd. And of course, the tattoo contests.

Behind every great custom motorcycle build, you’ll probably find a great photographer. So when many builders from around the U.S. need the perfect lensman to show off in print or online, they call upon the services of commercial motorcycle photographer Florida’s Erick Runyon.

After nearly 20yrs behind the lens, shooting lifestyle, glamour and fitness for several national men’s publications, women’s fitness publications as well as swimwear and activewear clothing companies, Erick combined his passion for photography with his lifelong love for motorcycles and found his true calling.“ In a recent interview, I asked Erick how it all started. Full time motorcycle photography came to me as a ’happy accident’ about seven years ago. I’d been riding since High School and I guess I had more than a passing interest with them. While working as a lifestyle and fashion photographer, I brought my Harley to Alain Bernrad of

We became friends and he asked me to photograph him for a new TV series called ‘Cafe Racer’. I hit it off with the production company and started shooting more stills for the series. Since that day almost 10 years ago, I started contributing on a regular basis for Discovery Networks, then Velocity and now the MotorTrend Network. As a college student, I was told to put down the camera and that I should start thinking about a real career. After that motivational sting, I was determined to find my path and use my passion for photography to guide me through life. February 28, 1971, Ontario Motor Speedway Evel Knievel lined up to jump 18 Dodge cars and 1 Dodge van. This jump would become the standard by which all stuntmen were measured. Evel would become arguably the greatest stunt rider of all time, not because of his jumps so much but for his showmanship which went unrivaled for many years. Fast forward to April 26, 1998, and a little-known stuntman named Bubba Blackwell would break his 1st of many Evel records, clearing 20 cars at Boston
Harley-Davidson. On that day he served notice to the world that there was a new sheriff in town. Riding an XR750 painted up in red, white, and blue with a leather suit to match he nailed the jump and landing like it was an old trick. Suddenly all eyes were on him and what he would jump next. One after another Bubba would go on to break many of Evel’s records the last of which he accomplished on October 4, 2008, when he jumped 52 stacked cars at Deep South Speedway near Mobile, Alabama. Today, Bubba can be seen all over the country doing stunt shows and performing the occasional jump at Harley-

Blackwell broke Knievel’s busjumping record by jumping 15 buses. Blackwell broke Knievel’s last remaining jump record on a HarleyDavidson XR-750 by jumping 52 stacked cars on October 4, 2008. The jump took place at the Deep South Speedway located between Pensacola, Florida and Mobile, Alabama. The jump also marked Blackwells’s 41st birthday. Blackwell is still periodically jumping the XR750. In 2013, Blackwell jumped over two helicopters with their blades rotating. He also returned to Ukes Harley-Davidson for a jump to celebrate the 110th Anniversary of Harley-Davidson. Retirement “I’ve seen so many people come and go in this business, and I’ve
never seen a good ending...I vowed a long time ago that I wasn’t going to end up like that.” Bubba Blackwell, speaking about his 2015 retirement. After 21 years of performing professional stunt riding for Buell Motorcycles and HarleyDavidson Motorcycles, Blackwell retired on August 15, 2015. Blackwell said of his planned retirement that he accomplished all of his dreams and enjoyed fatherhood over stunt performing. He announced his jump the weekend of August 15, 2015 in Peoria, Illinois would be his farewell performance. Blackwell said he would follow his daredevil career with a lawn care business, but kept his motorcycles and jumpsuit and may one day return. Nathan Meredith

Bubba Blackwell began his career on April 26, 1998, when he jumped 20 cars in Everett, Massachusetts at Boston Harley-Davidson, breaking the 19 car record held by Evel Knievel. The following year, on July 4, 1999 during an airing of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Blackwell jumped 14 buses at Del Mar Fair in California, tying the record held by Knievel,[2] who leapt 14 buses at Kings Island in 1975 (although Knievel’s rear tire touched the 14th bus, his landing was successful). Sam Nabb of Wilmington, Delaware works in bookkeeping and accounting for a FlameTech® store that her brother manages. That’s where she met Wayne who installs fireplaces. It wasn’t long before they started dating and eventually married. One weekend while on vacation in Virginia, Sam and Wayne rented scooters to ride around the town. They had a blast! Sam (short for Sandee) had never ridden a scooter or motorcycle before, and Wayne hadn’t ridden since he was a kid. Back at home, they decided to look at scooters since they’d had so much fun. They came home from the store with matching Yamaha Virago

After putting 4,000 miles on the 250s they traded up for Harley Sportsters. A few months later she had an accident and totaled the bike, but she walked away with only bruises. Within a few months, they both got H-D Street Glide Specials. On another, they rode 10 hours to Niagara Falls. They love to ride the long, twisty backroads. When they married in Colorado in 2017, they rented a trike and toured around together. Sam and Wayne plan to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary by going back to Colorado. This time rather than flying and renting bikes; they’ll ride across the country on their own motorcycles. In the meantime, they’ll enjoy riding any chance they get!

There is a huge secret that you may not know of, located in beautiful Ft. Myers, Florida. Haus of Trikes and Bikes is your absolutely one-stop shop for bike repair, rental bikes, new and used motorcycles, and their specialty – building trikes. I spent a wonderful afternoon with owner Manfred Glanzner and sales consultant Mike Tinneny. Both gentlemen are very intelligent professionals that love what they do at Haus of Trikes and Bikes! Manfred shared with me why he started this business. “I started Haus of Trikes and Bikes in 2000. As you can imagine at this point, everyone was laughing at my trike business. When I went to Daytona, people were like ‘What the hell is that?’ Long story short, this picture has changed. This is the fastest growing industry over the last couple of years. In addition, trike sales are growing whereas motorcycle 2-wheel sales are falling nearly 20%. Because we are strong believers in trikes, in 2005 we added motorcycles to our business. Today we are selling ATVs, UTVs, and side-by-side vehicles.” From day one, they totally specialized in trikes. They have also excelled in custom builds, choppers, and unique fabrication projects. Haus of Trikes and Bikes was also dealers for Big Dog Choppers and Big BearChoppers. Because of the diversified programs that they had, they survived the hard years in 20072008 when the market crash happened. “A lot of bike dealers BTR 28 | BORNTORIDE.COM
went out of business during that crash. We never lost focus on the trikes and were able to stay in business.” Manfred’s business is absolutely unique, with many different levels of expertise and skill. “I am from Germany and always came to Florida for vacation. I wanted to do something here in Florida after one of my friends moved here. I was always a motorcycle guy. In Germany, we were used to riding trikes. In 1999 when my buddy and I went to a local dealer to ask if we could rent a trike, the guy behind the desk looked at me like I was from another planet! At this point I went to the Germany trike dealer called Boom Trikes and asked them if we could start a distribution business for trikes here in the USA.” Haus of Trikes is one of the largest trike conversion company’s in Florida. “I grew up with trike companies like Motor Trike, California Sidecar, Hannigan, and Road Smith. We all met each other on the manufacturing/ distribution-side because I did shows with my trikes and these guys tried to push the conversion trike market. They knew me from day one as a manufacturer and importer and that I already had an established shop. That’s when I became I dealer for them.” Manfred went through all the trainings at these manufacturer’s

factories. “We are all trained, got certified, and became specialized trike technicians since day 1. We are deeply rooted in the trike business which I am very proud of.” In general, many folks that want to own/ride a trike don’t know much about them other than they want one. And because we offer so many different Trike Kit Manufacturers, we take our time with every customer to find out what he or she is looking for. “All of our kits are independent suspension, air ride, rake kits, etc. We have at least 6-8 different kits for Honda Goldwings and 4-5 kits for a Harley Motorcycles,as well as for Indians, Kawasaki, Yamaha and even for Scooters. I have different set ups where I can make this trike special for you. You don’t have options when you purchase a stock, manufactured trike, other than letting the sales person know what color you want.” Mike mentioned that they have 11 trike kits on order at this time! Selling and building trikes is something that Manfred and his staff do on a daily basis. What’s special, in addition to their knowledge and vast experience, is they also work building trikes for folks that have disabilities. “We can make a trike specific to the needs of the customer. If, for example, they can’t use the foot shifter, we can install an electric hand shifter. Or if you need a bracket for a wheelchair,
our fabrication shop can build that as well. We are not limited on what we can or can’t do! For example, we are building a scooter with a side car! The customer wants to travel with his dog. You can’t take your scooter to any dealer out there and say build me a side car for my scooter!” Manfred and his team put the concepts and ideas to paper then they make sure that those ideas produce a road-worthy, safe and secure vehicle. Besides regular trike conversion builds, they also buy new and used motorcycles and trike them so that there are trikes ready to go from the sales floor. Manfred added, “At any one time, there are at least 20 trikes on the floor.” Haus of Trikes and Bikes is also the dealership for Royal Enfield motorcycles, too! Manfred shared, “What many people don’t realize is that Royal Enfield motorcycles started their company back in 1901. This is the oldest and largest production company in the world. When times were tough, this company never went out of business. Last year, they sold over 800,000 motorcycles! These days, younger people don’t have the large budgets to step out and purchase a $20,000 bike. He or she wants a commuter bike to ride back and forth to school or to work. Starting at $4,500, you can get a beautiful Enfield that will be the talk of the local bike night due to its classic 50s look. It also comes with ABS, road-side assistance, 3-year warranty, and still half the price of similar.” When you come to visit Manfred and his staff at Haus of Trikes and Bikes, you will be amazed at the beautiful 30,000 sq. ft. building housing all the trikes, bikes, clothing, fabrication shop, repair shop, and more! This is the only independent dealership, non-franchise

two story showroom in the area. Manfred and his business partner, Herbert Baum, have been long-time friends. Herbert is another motor-head who loves this business as much as Manfred. The good news today is that Haus of Trikes and Bikes are opening up a NEW showroom and shop in Sarasota! “Our new facility is 15,000 sq. ft. There will be a fully loaded service area for regular motorcycle service, tire changes, motor work, etc. The big builds will still be located in our Ft. Myers location because we are completely set up for that.” The doors will be open sometime in November and a HUGE Grand Opening Party will happen in December! (Stay tuned to Born To Ride for that update!) Manfred is a hands-on shop owner, I still build trikes on my own as well. I have 14 lifts in the shop. We are so busy that I need to step in and help out with all the orders that are coming in. I train my mechanics, one-on-one. I make sure that the knowledge is never leaving the company.” Manfred is at his shop every day! Why Born To Ride? “Number one, I need regional coverage and advertising. There isn’t a lot out there. We do a lot of stuff for our community, the Veterans, and various charities. I’m sure there are some out there reading this article that feel they will never ride again. Some Veteran organizations even help out financially with trike builds. Getting the word out about what we do and all that we can help with is very important to us.” Last thoughts? “We have mechanics that repair Honda, Kawasaki, BMW, Suzuki, we have fabricator guys, and the old-school Harley dudes. We are booked solid for weeks. There is a reason why people come here. No one build trikes around here the way we build trikes. I’m also building Indian trikes for several Indian Dealerships in Florida with California Sidecar and Motortrike Kits. Thank you, Manfred and Mike, for a great conversation about Haus of Trikes and Bikes and sharing your superb story with the readers of Born To Ride Magazine! Susan Hurst

Why Motorcyclists Can’t Afford to Just Sit Back and Enjoy the Ride By Matt Danielson, The Motorcycle Law Group
Many different things draw people to motorcycling. For some, it’s the sense of freedom. For others, it’s a source of relaxation, even exhilaration. If you’re like me, it’s to some degree all of the above. That said, it’s the ride we crave regardless of what each of us gets from it. This time of year, roads are packed with motorcyclists sitting back (or forward) and just enjoying the ride. Which begs the question: can we, as avid motorcyclists, afford to do that? I have the privilege of being able to attend motorcycle rights conferences around the country. It has allowed me to take some fantastic rides in some of the prettiest parts of this nation. I remember attending one conference a few years ago put on by the Motorcycle Rider’s Foundation (MRF), in Frisco, Colorado. If you’ve been to Colorado, you know it’s some of the prettiest riding country you’ll ever encounter. Yet on a gorgeous Saturday in June, I found myself not on my bike riding the Rockies, but in a room with motorcyclists from around the country discussing issues riders face all around the United States. Some of the issues being addressed by the participants included working to: • Prevent motorcyclists from being excluded from public parking lots, roads and parking garages • Eliminate roadside checkpoints aimed only at motorcyclists
• Address the ever-growing problem of distracted driving • Prohibit the use of higher ethanol blends at the pump until the effects on motorcycle engines can be further studied • Lobby for legislation allowing motorcyclists to safely and reasonably proceed when they are stuck at a traffic light that will not recognize them • Prevent legislation which arbitrarily sets age restrictions for passengers on motorcycles • Partner with state and local governments to promote sensible motorcycle awareness campaigns These are all real issues being faced by real riders. As I took in everything being discussed, I thought to myself: what would riding be like if no one was addressing these issues on behalf of motorcyclists? The answer was chilling. It’s easy to sit back, enjoy the ride, and count on everything being all right. But can we afford to do that? If we all did, we may soon find no ride left to sit back and enjoy. So what can you do to protect yourself and the activity we all love and cherish? Take some simple steps to become involved in protecting the rights of fellow motorcyclists. I’m not suggesting everyone start riding all over the country attending seminars (though it is a great excuse to ride all over the country). Get involved locally. Start paying attention to positions your local, state and federal legislators take regarding

issues affecting motorcyclists. Share your thoughts in letters and emails. Write letters to the editor of your local paper. Go to City Council or County Board meetings. Join a motorcycle rights organization and attend their lobby day, when motorcyclists go the State Capitol to discuss important issues with elected officials. I also encourage you to join the MRF, an organization dedicated solely to protecting the rights of American motorcyclists (learn more and join at mrf. org). There are numerous ways to protect your rights as a motorcyclist. The ways are limitless, bound only by your passion and imagination. There is, however, a wrong way, and that’s to count on someone else to do it. That someone may be sitting back, enjoying the ride and counting on you. Fuel Tank Rusty? Craig Can Fix It!
On a motorcycle, your fuel tank is the heart and soul of your machine. What do you do when it’s rusty, when it leaks? Radiator shop over-the-counter stuff? You know it doesn’t work, try anyways and guess what? It doesn’t work. I offer an alternative service for the inside of your tank, I remove all rust clean them out and coat them with epoxy tank liner that’s clear and works, I guarantee it with gasoline and even methanol. I even repair failed Kreme and Redkote liners. I save vintage tanks that leak, rusty tanks that nobody would ever think of using again. I turn them around quickly within three days Many of the leading motorcycle dealers use me on a regular basis, (Tampabay Powersports, Tampa Triumph, and Eurocycles Tampa) when they’re tired of cleaning carburetors they call Craig. Prices are 129 any tank any condition, three day turn around.

As a writer, I occasionally run into certain situations that absolutely prevent me from making a definitive decision regarding the piece of prose that I am working on. This often blocks me from making the best presentation of a column that I do for any particular entity. As a run of the mill poor redneck trailer trash biker, I often don’t see things ahead on the road. At certain times you may have a destination in mind for the things that you must accomplish. Sometimes everything goes smoothly and you go gather all the things required for the task and simply return home or to the job site. On other occasions the regular daily process of obtaining that particular laundry list of items may be cut short due to a vendor’s lack of stock or perhaps when other unforeseen obstacles rear their ugly heads. I have a myriad of examples but recently a few come to mind. I may have discussed in the past the lack of availability of walls for sale at Wal-Mart. I also indicated that there were no steins on sale at Stein-Mart. Everyone already knows that you can’t buy a home at Home Depot or an office at Office Depot so I refuse to continue my simplistic diatribe regarding misleading corporate names. I’m not a real big fan of major corporations anyhow so I can’t try to suggest a better title for those outlets. Either way, we all must obtain the things needed to accomplish the task at hand so when you know the necessity and have the wherewithal to get the items required, you simply venture out and acquire the goods. Once I needed to get a couch for the trailer. Guests who had the nuts to visit the trailer park (this includes Mike and Spyke) were getting tired of sitting on the old greasy milk crates that I use for working on motorcycles and other ‘high altitude’ work, so I took my old truck and went to a used furniture store to attempt to make a swimmingly wonderful deal on a slightly used sofa that I had seen sitting in front of the place as I was riding by on the bagger. I mean, it looked pretty good and I suppose that the price was reasonable,
but why did the proprietor try to bundle the deal with an “Occasional Chair”??? I didn’t need (and didn’t have room for) anything except the sofa. Besides that—“What the hell is an Occasional Chair?” I asked. For some reason, the owner of the business couldn’t come up with a good answer and suggested that it was something that only was used every now and then by people that didn’t desire to sit upon the floor, as was the custom in his country. I figured all this out pretty quickly and left with only the couch. I just couldn’t get the concept of the additional furniture that would be used only ‘occasionally.’ Besides, I’m no slave to fashion or décor so I left befuddled regarding the suggestion that I would need such a piece. The ‘Occasional Sheriff’ on the other hand is something that I am somewhat familiar with. I remember a time when I acted as the ‘designated dummy’ that was obligated me to go fetch some brew for a party. I went to a liquor store that had a pretty good deal on But Light and I was able to load six 18 packs on the bagger. Yeah, I admit that it looked kinda funny, but I had used a bunch of bungee cords and a short piece of rope to load the brew on the rear seat and luggage rack. On a dark back road a good distance from town, I was simply cruising along at the obligatory 10 miles over the speed limit when I was spied by the ‘occasional sheriff.’ Usually, no law enforcement personnel ever hang out around this area due to the lack of ‘business’ to be done in this vicinity. But I suppose that this wasn’t my lucky day. I was surprised when I saw the blue lights come on, largely because I wasn’t going all that fast and I never worried about DUI or anything else because I had only consumed a couple of beers before I went on the run. But as usual the occasional sheriff had that text-book list of demands. “Driver License, Insurance, Immigration Card and keep yer hands where I can see ‘em”… I’m just sitting there on the bike on the side of the road while he checks all my credentials and when comes back he had some interesting questions: “Do you know why I stopped you?” To which I responded “Uhhh, I guess cause you wanted to check out my really cool bike” (A moment of silence) “Boy, you gonna drink all this beer by yerself?” Well, probably not a good answer but I quipped “Damn, I hope so!” (A longer moment of silence) After what felt like an hour, he handed me back my license and said “I know you ain’t right but have a safe night, and don’t try to drink all that friggin beer by yourself!” I said thanks and “remember an 18 pack is only a good start!” I haven’t seen any other occasional sheriffs in that area again, but I realized that everyone should keep their eyes open! (Including myself). Now that the terrors of Halloween are over, we must prepare ourselves for the most horrifying holiday of all which is commonly called Thanksgiving. This particular celebration is always loaded with family and friends who really don’t want to do anything other than fight. I have written before about the horrors of this special day, and the haunts of Halloween pale in comparison to the zombies, ghosts and miscreants that will try to celebrate you making them dinner—and then destroy your life as you know it, simply because they love you. (Allegedly) Try to make the best of it, and until next month—“Speed Safely!” CRAVEN

Christian Motorcyclists Association Don’t get Angry or Bitter, get Better!
One of the most memorable things I have ever done was when I bought a basket case Panhead hardtail and learned how to build it into a bike. There were a lot of lessons to be learned, but it is an experience I have never forgotten. First off, the project bike was about 30 years old, so there was a technology issue, as well as having “fun” tracking down missing parts. Yes, I was told the parts were all there, in the various buckets and boxes. I guess it was a matter of who was defining what the word “all” meant. Every time I discovered another part missing, especially if it was a hard to find item, my temper would boil a little. Then there was the test of my experience in buying a $5.00 bucket of wire that was all black. I thought it was cool as the black wiring was so much easier to hide than the bright colored wires everyone else was using. This caused me a real challenge because once I got the bike up and running, I noticed that every time I put pressure on the brake pedal the bike would die. When I went to find the short, I realized the difficulty in tracing the wiring on an all-black homemade wiring BTR 48 | BORNTORIDE.COM
harness. Once again, I got a little hot under the collar that such a simple task was made so difficult. The funny part was that I was getting upset with the bike shop owner who sold me the basket case and then many of the missing pieces I needed to complete the project. Once I got the bike running, I was in for a real treat, the bike had a rocker clutch! If you have never ridden a rocker clutch let me tell you that it is only one step away from a suicide clutch and is aptly named. The clutch would lock into position, but you had better get it right or your ride will give you white knuckles. Needless to say, I was less than happy and had to find parts to convert the rocker clutch into a standard hand-operated clutch. What a learning experience this whole project turned out to be! In the Bible, in Psalm 37:8, it says, “Don’t get angry. Don’t be upset; it only leads to trouble.” This is invaluable advice that is well worth following. See, I could choose to get angry, and I did, but it accomplished nothing other than an unhappy temperament. My developing a bad attitude could also lead me to expressing my displeasure to the very ones whose help I needed! When we walk in the wise counsel of the Bible, we are set up to have a more successful outcome, as well as a happier disposition. This can help you have a smile on your face and joy in your heart. So, don’t get angry or bitter, get better!
