S
ince 1963, the community has enjoyed cooling off at Boulder’s only 50-meter outdoor pool named after (Malcolm) Scott Carpenter, Boulder’s home-grown astronaut. For over 50 years, great memories – from swim lessons to cannon balls to Dog Dayz canine swims – have endeared residents to this pool. As the 2018 swim season draws to a close, the construction plans and schedule for the redevelopment of the pool are being finalized. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2019. In 2015, a comprehensive Aquatics Facility study of Boulder recognized the pool was near the end of its service life. In response, Parks and Recreation initiated a public process to develop a vision and plan for replacing the pool. The community took a deep dive into the dreams, desires and related costs for a next generation aquatic facility. In January 2017, a final concept plan for redevelopment was unanimously approved by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. The final design boasts ten 50-meter lanes, deep water exercise areas, a tower slide and other play features, upgraded bathhouse and leisure elements for a wide age range of users. Thanks to the support of Boulder voters and the PLAY Boulder Foundation funding to replace the pool was approved last November as part of an extension of the Community, Culture and Safety Tax for Capital Improvements. As Scott Carpenter Pool closes this year, we say our bittersweet goodbyes to the pool as we know it. Yet, we also look forward to greeting the amazing new pool that will take its place in the continuum of memory making. While construction timelines are still being determined, we invite you to look at the plan for the pool’s future and stay up-to-date on the project by visiting the Scott Carpenter Pool Replacement Project page at BoulderParks-Rec.org.

Scott Carpenter Pool
Did you know? • In 1963, one year after Lieutenant Commander Scott Carpenter became the second American astronaut to orbit the Earth, the city completed the current pool and after his dedication speech, Carpenter was thrown into the pool, suit and tie included, by then Mayor Holloway and City Manager Robert Turner. • Carpenter was quite at home in the water. He was also one of the nation’s pioneering aquanauts, and once spent 30 days in SEALAB II at a depth of more than 180 feet off the California coast. • This season, a new aqua climbing wall replaced the water slide (which otherwise would have required costly repairs in advance of construction). Once the pool closes, the new aqua wall will be moved to the South Boulder Recreation Center! • For more than a decade, the pool has been transformed into a canine-only fun zone, called Dog Dayz at the end of each human swimming season. Last year more than 2,000 dogs visited the pool in September. Learn more about this year’s event at BoulderDogDayz.org

Tournaments and Outings
At Flatirons, we believe that it’s your tournament or outing. We operate on a “menu of services” basis. While other facilities may require you to buy tournament administration, prizes and food service, we start with a basic golf package and let you customize it to the specific needs of your group. This golf event philosophy has been especially popular with charitable fund raising events and other organizations that have an interest in maximizing their charitable donations.

Fall Equinox
Moon of Falling Leaves - When daylight and night are equal in length, it is a time to harmonize with polarities and grace one another with understanding. We will celebrate thanksgiving and harvest and join with the global community on International Day of Peace to reflect on how we can ensure that natural resources are managed in a sustainable way. We will make cooperation an art as we move to lively fall festival tunes. The “middle way” of Yoga (not too hard or too easy) will include twists that model the season’s contraction toward the core, unwind tension in the deep muscles that surround the spine, and balance poses that steady the mind. As cool dry winds clear the tree that offers its leaves to earth for renewal, we will let “letting go” strengthen our intentions. By emptying what is not essential our mindful action will make way for new possibilities. Co-instructors: Louann Harlow and Tracy Goldenberg. 12798

Yoga Nidra
NEW
Yoga Nidra means yoga sleep. Through guided relaxation, you will begin to connect to your subtle (sleep) body and you will start a powerful process of letting go of physical, mental, and emotional toxins. This practice connects practitioners to a deep and profound state of being (Sat), awareness (Chit), and bliss (Ananda). Our journey will feel like a mini vacation. Yoga Nidra is practiced in a comfortable Savasana, using blankets, bolsters, blocks, and pillows. Bring your own from home or use the lovely props provided. This journey promises to relax and reboot your energy system during the busy holiday season. 13237

Winter Solstice The Transformative Power of the Night - This is a time of origins when earth sleeps, blanketed by the year’s longest night, and we welcome the rebirth of the unconquered sun. In the rush of seasonal events, we will follow the hiburnal habits of animals with forward bending pratyahara poses. These help rest the mind in the silent present to restore and preserve willpower, inspiration, simplicity and peace. Sun salutations and warrior poses will warm our bodies and boost circulation and immune systems. Diving together into the dark we will rekindle the Yule log of light and service to the world with movements that support inner alignment. This allows us to see more clearly - not what we do but who we are-radiate unity symbolized by the life giving sun. 12800

Why Register Now?
Why wait – when you can lead the way? TODAY is the best day to register for the classes you want. Why? Because under-enrolled classes get cancelled and might be dropped entirely to make space for more popular programs. Registering early is the best way to prevent your favorite class from cancellation. This year, we’ll be increasing our adherence to minimum enrollment standards to enhance our efficient use of staff, space and funding. Under-enrolled classes will be cancelled prior to the first session. Thanks for registering today!
Class Size
Limits have been placed on the size of some classes to assure quality instruction. Registration is first come, first served. Register early to ensure a place in the classes you want. Class enrollments are reviewed 3-5 days prior to the first class and those with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled. Registration must be made prior to participation in any Parks and Recreation program or activity.
Group Discount Program
Discounted rates are available for businesses and organizations with five or more employees. For information call Christy Munoz at 303-413-7259 or visit BoulderParks-Rec.org

In an Emergency What’s Our Plan?
The city of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department operates many programs and facilities for the Boulder community. We know that under rare circumstances, extreme weather or other situations have the potential to impact our operations, facilities and patrons. In an emergency, staff will follow plans and procedures designed to ensure the safety of participants. A plan has been tailored to each specific site and facility we manage. In the event of an emergency requiring the relocation of participants, program leaders will communicate their actions and evacuation location (once practical) to department communication staff. This information will be uploaded to the city’s Website (bouldercolorado.gov) and be added to the city’s emergency information phone line at 303-441-4300 as soon as possible. If you have any questions about the Department’s emergency plans, please call 303-413-7200.

Volunteerism
Working Together to Foster Volunteerism and Community Stewardship PLAY Boulder Foundation, the official nonprofit partner for Boulder Parks and Recreation, cultivates excellence in parks and recreation by mobilizing community support through education, philanthropy and advocacy. In 2015, PLAY set a new strategic course of advancement - focusing on awareness, development and best practices enhancing recreation and urban places for the Boulder community. Three years later, the Foundation’s partnership with the department has led to increased opportunities for community involvement. PLAY’s three new priorities, Access, Environmental Sustainability and Placemaking are a response to emerging social, environmental and economic interests. By raising collective awareness and strengthening leadership, each will succeed. As PLAY continues to grow, so do the areas of support the Foundation provides to the department. Each area builds upon the capabilities and capacities of department priorities, ultimately ensuring this partnership is serving our community’s greatest needs. With this collaborative approach, we seek to spur new opportunities for community involvement through volunteerism and stewardship. In the coming months, please consider supporting PLAY by volunteering at the following events. Volunteers will assist
in promoting PLAY, registering ducks for the Great Boulder Duck Race, and cultivating relationships with the community while enjoying local music, fare and movies. Many of the events listed are joint initiatives of both the Boulder Parks and Recreation Department and the Foundation, as well as other city departments and even non-profits such as Downtown Boulder Partnership. Additionally, please consider rounding up your purchase at McGuckin Hardware between September 7-16, 2018. To contribute in a leadership role, consider joining PLAY’s Board of Directors or participate on a committee addressing one of our three focus areas and corresponding initiatives. Community stewardship can come in many forms volunteering time and leadership, donating to a cause or simply rounding up at your local everything store - PLEDGE to PLAY!

Community Connections
Healthy Together
I
t’s no secret that Boulder Parks and Recreation’s (BPR’s) mission is to promote the health and well-being of the entire community by providing high-quality parks, facilities and programs that make healthy lifestyles accessible for all members of the community. But did you know that we recently launched a collaborative venture between three local organizations: BPRs Youth Services Initiative (YSI), the Boulder County I Have A Dream Foundation (IHADF) and Boulder Housing Partners (BHP)? In late 2017, this trio of respected organizations joined forces to pilot Healthy Together, an initiative aimed at providing youth living in Boulder’s subsidized housing with greater access to physical activities and excellent nutritional choices. Funded by Boulder’s Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Tax (SSBT), the program aims to reduce the types of health disparities associated with economic inequities. For more than ten years, BPRs Youth Services Initiative (YSI) has been changing lives through its after-school and summer programs. YSI inspires and supports youth and families from underrepresented communities to make healthy choices through recreation, health and well-being opportunities and life skill development. Over the years, BPR has collaborated with these two partner agencies to improve health equity in the community. Health equity ensures everyone in the community has a fair access and opportunity to live a health life. In its first season, the Healthy Together collaboration has BPR providing physical activities and access to recreation, IHADF offering academic enrichment, and BHP providing the community centers to host the programs. Working together, the hope is to leverage this funding to enhance health equity in Boulder. “We are thrilled to be able to expand health and wellness activities to more than 90 children and their families in Boulder through the funding received through the Health Equity Fund, through our Healthy Together Program, a collaboration with Boulder Housing Partners and the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation, said Lori Canova, President and CEO of the “I Have A Dream” Foundation of Boulder County. “This program ensures that low-income youth and their parents
54
have equal access to the opportunities and resources that lead to a healthy living, working, and playing environment, which ultimately increases their chances for academic success.” The 2017 SSBT funding helped expand the pilot program by enhancing IHADF and YSI programming at BHP sites, bringing youth health and wellness activities, nutritional snack availability, regular after-school programming, parent classes and adult fitness teacher training to deliver impactful health resources right to the participants. Over 180 youth and families have been served, including free adult fitness classes at BHP sites for there residents and for youth programs to continue through the summer. The program has been so successful, the Healthy Together Program partners are already working on an application for 2019 SSBT funds.
Then & Now
North Boulder Park & The Coors/Red Zinger Classics New amenity inspired by legendary races of late 1970s-‘80s
O
n a warm summer afternoon, I rode a borrowed bike from Eldorado Springs to the corner of 9th and Balsam across from North Boulder Park. It was August 24, and I braided my way among several thousand cycling enthusiasts gathered to watch the 13th and final stage of the 1986 Coors International Bicycle Classic. The Coors-sponsored stage race grew out of the Red Zinger Bicycle Classic, a three day bike race and celebration of cycling initiated by Celestial Seasonings founders, Mo Siegel, John Hay and Wyck Hay in 1975. The Zinger was created to promote alternative transportation, including bike paths and bike lanes around Boulder.
Photo provided by David Parsons
In 1979, Celestial sold the race to the event’s PR director, Michael Aisner for $1. They knew Aisner had ambitions for a much larger, Tour de France-style, American stage race. From 1980 to 1988, the Coors Classic grew into a two week, multistate stage race, arguably the fourth largest multi-stage race in the world.
New Tot Track!
The Classic is credited with inspiring the movie, American Flyers, and illuminating the careers of American cycling greats like Connie Carpenter, John Howard, Greg LeMond, Davis Phinney, Wayne and Dale Stetina, Inga Thompson and Rebecca Twigg. The Classic was also ground breaking for being the largest women’s stage in the world (at that time). The men’s 1986 Classic was an epic race won by five-time Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault (riding the final stage race of his illustrious career). But on that sunny, August afternoon, it was Boulder’s Ron Kiefel riding for team 7-Eleven® who won the final 60-mile, 70-lap stage around North Boulder Park. This summer, to commemorate the rich cycling history of North Boulder Park (the park’s criterium race was the final stage of all but one Coors/Zinger Classics), Boulder Parks and Recreation will be adding a bicycle tot track near the park’s existing playground. Full funding for this new amenity was provided by race and cycling enthusiasts wishing to honor this legendary race and era in Boulder’s cycling history in hopes of inspiring the next generation of youth cyclists. Learn more about the project at BoulderParks-Rec.org. See you in North Boulder Park! Paul Bousquet
