Discover a great new way to have fun and stay fit this winter! Join us for climbing fun during open swim times.

Winter Activities in Boulder’s Civic Area and Downtown Grab a cup of hot cocoa, stroll through downtown Boulder’s Civic Area and delight in more than 275,000 LED lights on display through Jan. 28. The city will switch on the winter holidays on Sunday, Nov. 18. You are invited to join Boulder Parks and Recreation for exciting events and activities all season long: • Explore more than 275,000 LED lights around Central Park at the Civic Area (Nov. 18 to Jan. 28). • Warm up with seasonal treats from the Dushanbe Teahouse or Seeds Café (Boulder Public Library). • Discover enriching seasonal programs for all ages at the Boulder Public Library. Sister City Plaza Received Nablus Tile In 2016, Boulder City Council established Nablus (sometimes called Nabulus) as a Sister City. This Palestinian city with a population of 134,000 is located in the northern West Bank and is the capital of the Nablus Governorate. Boulder artisans, Jessica Sauther and Christian Muller, designed and constructed a beautiful tile representing Nablus which was installed and dedicated in the Sister City Plaza, located in front of the Municipal Building, on Nov. 9. Muller also designed the original tiles for the Sister City Plaza as well as the Gilbert White flood marker near Boulder Creek. The tile is a peaceful representation of Boulder’s newest sister city, and we hope you’ll visit the plaza to see it.

East Boulder Community Park Parking Lot Improvements While it’s easy to see improvements when Boulder Parks and Recreation renovates a park or playground, several of our maintenance projects are a little less visible – but the impact is just as significant. This year, as part of Boulder’s 2018 Capital Improvements Program, the northeast parking lot at the East Boulder Community Park was resurfaced and rebuilt. In addition to resurfacing, the renovation provided drainage improvements and concrete pads in areas of high traffic and use. Construction was completed in late September.

New Tot Track at North Boulder Park Open North Boulder Park offers something for everyone. If it snows enough, you can click into your skinny skis for some laps. And, if its sunny, Boulder youth can take to the new Tot Track! Bring your trikes, balance bikes, training wheels and go for a spin. The track was made possible by a generous donation honoring the community’s cycling legacy and the Red Zinger Classic/ Coors International Bicycle Classic. In addition to the new tot bike loop, the department replaced an existing swing with an accessible molded bucket swing seat and added accessible surfacing to, and under it.

Scott Carpenter Pool Replacement Project Update Delivering on the promise made to residents through the 2017 renewal of the Community, Culture and Safety tax, the city is ready to dive into the construction of the new Scott Carpenter Pool complex. Construction is expected to start in early 2019 with an anticipated opening at the start of the 2020 summer season. While the pool will be closed for the 2019 summer season, we will announce a list of options and alternatives in the spring/summer guide (out in late Feb. 2019). In the meantime, you can track the project on the Scott Carpenter Pool Replacement project webpage at BoulderParks-Rec.org.

Harbeck-Bergheim House Update This fall, staff provided an update to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, Landmarks Board and City Council on the Harbeck-Bergheim House planning process. You can read more about this update and stay involved in the planning process for this historic asset by visiting BoulderParkNews.org.

Remembering Dwain Miller William Dwain Miller, recognized as Boulder Parks and Recreation’s first director, died this past October at his home in Fort Collins at the age of 89. In his tenure with Boulder (1961 to 1968), Miller grew city parklands from four acres to 212 acres and was responsible for starting the greenbelt movement in the city as well as the Boulder Junior Ranger Program which continues to this day. The department and the community will forever be grateful for the legacy he has left behind.

Featured Park

Elmer’s Two Mile Park Blink as you drive along Iris Avenue, just west of 28th Street, and you might miss it, but a hidden world exists at Elmer’s Two Mile Park. This neighborhood park serves as a unique and vital greenway for the surrounding urban area and runs alongside the small Two-Mile Creek, a habitat for various wildlife species. The park’s development in a city flood control channel was made possible through an understanding between Boulder’s Parks and Recreation and the Public Works Departments, signed on April 20, 2000. The design incorporated ideas from residents living in the park area, developers adjacent to the site, city staff from nine departments and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (PRAB). The park’s design also serves several functions. First, the park creates a space which invites visitors of all ages to develop their relationship with nature by providing ecological alternatives to usual park activities such a nature walk with educational signs along the multi-use trail and Two-Mile Creek. Next, the site maintains the floodplain management and stormwater conveyance as it serves as a flood detention facility. Finally, the park offers an almost one mile multi-use path for pedestrians, bikers and even horseback travelers. Since its inception, the city also added a pedestrian underpass on Iris Avenue, providing a much-needed greenway corridor safely linking the park to its neighborhoods to the north. Small parks like Elmer’s Two Mile serve as stepping stones across our urban landscape for both human visitors and wildlife alike. For people, it’s a pleasant path from one neighborhood to the next or a getaway from city traffic and noise. For many animals, the park can be a lifeline. Elmer’s Two Mile offers our animal neighbors safe passage between the more significant and wilder spaces surrounding the city. The park also creates a year-round, wetland home for some of Boulder’s smaller critter residents. Whether you are traveling through on a commute or a walk, we invite you to explore the hidden world at Elmer’s Two Mile Park. Be sure to say hello to some of the wetlands’ year-round residents while you are there!

4

Did you know? • In June 1999, discussion to rename Elmer’s Two Mile Park to Hollow Park took place; however, the request was ultimately withdrawn and PRAB unanimously voted to table renaming the park indefinitely. • Do you know who “Elmer” was or how this area got its name? We’ve yet to find anyone who knows! Send an email if you know to Paul Bousquet at bousqetp@bouldercolorado.gov. • Elmer’s Two Mile Park is one of several green havens that roughly creates a wildlife connection between Boulder Valley Ranch to the north of the city and Marshall Mesa nine miles to the south. • Cattails only grow where soil stays wet – check out the tangled strands and rushes at the park and see if you can spot any clues that wildlife have visited the area. • Elmer’s offers a year-round habitat for voles and mice, insects, spiders and snakes with its ample water, food, and nesting places.

Yoga

Heartbeat Yoga Workshop Heartbeat Yoga is fun holistic exercise that blends Yoga Practice, Aerobic Yoga Dance, Free Form and Collaborative Movement with theme-based global music.

Courage and Kindness in Activism Non-violence, called ahimsa, is the foundation of asana practice. When we recognize the interdependence of everything, we act with kindness toward our body, our mind, others and the earth. Ahimsa protects our dream. We start with breathing - we all share the same air - relaxing the belly, and from the common ground below our feet and spinal column, let our humanity grow. Warrior poses teach us how to take a stand for justice, build resilience, and balance effort with detachment. Back bends nourish the bravery in our hearts. In inversions, we learn the pause used to redirect anger so it rises with clarity and a nonfearful response. Percussive instrument play and group movement dialogue renew our joy in freedom. 14615

Cosmic Dance of Bliss The King of the Dance Pose depicts Nataraj, who is known as the first teacher of the yoga tradition and as the life force present in everything and everyone’s heart. Outside CERN, center for nuclear physics research, stands his statue portraying the cosmic and daily rhythms of creation and destruction in a dance of Noble Goodness. When Shiva/Shakti dance so wildly they become very fast or still in divine wholeness. On Maha Shiva Ratri we will find steadiness through our medial channel where polarities of inhale/exhale, action/rest, masculine/ feminine, self/other balance. Solar and lunar breathing brings prana into deeper regions of our nervous system. Opening hips and shoulders prepares for backbending in Natarajasana. We will move with vigorous and graceful primal rhythms for pure aesthetic enjoyment, to express liberation, and enter into communion with the larger dance. 14616

Continuing Yoga

This ongoing level is for anyone who has studied yoga for 6 months or more and wishes to advance their practice beyond the beginner level. Classes review the fundamentals and variations with longer holdings and greater focus on the subtleties of alignment as taught by B.K.S. Iyengar, author of Light on Yoga. Poses such as headstand, shoulder-stand and backbends are introduced. More time is devoted to pranayama (breath control and meditation). Students proceed to the more advanced poses when they are ready. Alternatives are provided for those with physical limitations (eg., headstand is not suitable for everyone). 14174 1/6-3/31

Iyengar Yoga - Beginner

Learn the fundamentals of Iyengar yoga. Instructors give clear demonstrations of the postures and emphasize detail, precision and alignment in the performance of postures (asana) and breath control (pranayama). Students are observed and, if necessary, adjusted to help them find their optimal alignment. Props, such as belts, blocks, and blankets, enable students to perform the asanas correctly, minimizing the risk of injury or strain, and making the postures accessible to both novices and regular practitioners alike. Modifications to the classic yoga postures can be made for individual students. 14178

Why wait – when you can lead the way? TODAY is the best day to register for the classes you want. Why? This year, we’ll be increasing our adherence to minimum enrollment standards to enhance our efficient use of staff, space and funding. Under-enrolled classes will be cancelled prior to the first session. Thanks for registering today!

Class Size

Limits have been placed on the size of some classes to assure quality instruction. Registration is first come, first served. Register early to ensure a place in the classes you want. Class enrollments are reviewed 3-5 days prior to the first class and those with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled. Registration must be made prior to participation in any Parks and Recreation program or activity.

Group Discount Program

Discounted rates are available for businesses and organizations with five or more employees. For information call Christy Munoz at 303-413-7259 or visit BoulderParks-Rec.org

In an Emergency What’s Our Plan?

The city of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department operates many programs and facilities for the Boulder community. We know that under rare circumstances, extreme weather or other situations have the potential to impact our operations, facilities and patrons. In an emergency, staff will follow plans and procedures designed to ensure the safety of participants. A plan has been tailored to each specific site and facility we manage. In the event of an emergency requiring the relocation of participants, program leaders will communicate their actions and evacuation location (once practical) to department communication staff. This information will be uploaded to the city’s Website (bouldercolorado.gov) and be added to the city’s emergency information phone line at 303-441-4300 as soon as possible. If you have any questions about the Department’s emergency plans, please call 303-413-7200.

Boulder Parks and Recreation is committed to supporting people of all abilities in recreation through both specialized and inclusive programs. We strive to exceed the requirements set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act and to create a welcoming and supportive community. Volunteerism

Volunteers are Critical to Boulder Parks & Recreation

E

ach year, new organizations, groups and individuals from the community contribute many hours of work – planting thousands of plants, reseeding turf, conducting natural lands wildlife counts and caring for children in our rec centers. The department could not accomplish all we do without our volunteers’ commitment to giving back. Here are some of the new groups who have committed to regularly volunteer with Parks and Recreation. This is the second year for our Park Partners program. Park Partners are local businesses that commit eight or more staff to commit to at least one project per year.

Park Partners Program This year, Park Partners completed 11 projects, engaged 179 volunteers and contributed over 440 volunteer hours in our parks!

Boulder Journey School The Boulder Journey School engaged their students and families in a clean-up around the Boulder Reservoir. While collecting trash, they educated their pre-schoolers about reducing and reusing waste.

Chautauqua Capital Management This is the second year that Chautauqua Capital Management helped with a project at Chautauqua Park, and the first year the group decided to become a Park Partner and make this an annual event! They helped plant 350 plants in the new beds along Baseline Road.

University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) In the heat of the summer, a group of 13 motivated UCAR employees helped clear the brush and grounds around the historic Roney House on Valmont Road across from Valmont Bike Park.

Adopt-A-Park Program Adopt-a-Park is another program that enlists dedicated individuals, neighbors and groups to adopt and to help maintain the beauty of our local parks. This year, two wonderful groups did outstanding work and demonstrated their commitment to supporting our parks maintenance staff.

Imagine! Since last November, a group of three to four individuals and their support staff worked at the Boulder Reservoir every week picking up trash, weeding and helping with maintenance tasks around this popular recreation site. This group consists of 15 individuals who have volunteered nearly 540 hours since adopting the Rez last autumn.

Zach Navarre and Dylan Thompson volunteering at the Boulder Reservoir.

Boulder Disc Golf Club

The Boulder Disc Golf Club formally adopted Valmont Disc Golf Course. In just a few months, the club made a significant impact on the course, contributing over 100 volunteer hours. Volunteers regularly pick up trash, pull weeds, move baskets and remove graffiti. They spent several days this summer clearing the course of fallen branches and debris. Over three tons of waste was hauled off making for a better playing experience. The club has also added a programming element to the facility to further engage the community around this growing sport. Many thanks for being a part of the Boulder Parks and Recreation Volunteer Community! Your commitment, dedication and stewardship prove what an engaged and caring community we live in.

SmartEtailing This bike-loving group devoted almost 40 hours to weeding at Valmont Bike Park during two separate work projects. They helped remove 1,000 pounds of invasive plants from the park! Parks and Recreation appreciates the time, commitment and efforts of our Park Partners. We look forward to growing the program in the future years and having the opportunity to work alongside groups like these who continue making a positive impact on our community. To learn more about this program or to become a Park Partner, please visit BPRvolunteer.org or contact Cassy Bohnet, at bohnetc@ bouldercolorado.gov. We look forward to partnering with you in 2019! A big thank you to the Boulder Disc Golf Club who contributed over 100 volunteer hours at the Valmont Disc Golf Course.

Community Connections

The Story of Camp AMICO

C

amp AMICO, a summer day camp matching youth with disabilities (ages 12 to 18) with peer mentors (ages 14 to 18), is a small program with a mighty impact. What started as a modest, two-week pilot program in 2015 is now planning for its fifth year. While many teens are able to manage independently in the summer, some teens with developmental disabilities benefit from more structure days. Unfortunately, there are very few options for these teens. Camp AMICO, part of Boulder Parks and Recreation’s EXPAND program, is designed for just these teens. The camp trains youth without disabilities to be mentors so youth of all abilities participate together – and many friendships are created. This program helps increase all participants’ skills towards independence, gives them a place to practice and learn valuable social skills, teaches them coping skills, boosts self-esteem, and provides amazing connections between people. This makes Camp AMICO a special not only for our teens with disabilities but also for their families and their mentors. In 2018, Camp AMICO hosted 80 participations over six weeks, accepting 11 to 15 youth each week and incorporating 15 mentors. The inclusive camp meets five days a week at Summit Middle School with each day featuring new opportunities to enjoy summer outdoor activities, regardless of ability. Participants engage in games, crafts, water sports, and field trips creating daily opportunities to build friendships, grow and have fun. If you or a family member are interested in participating in Camp AMICO, registration begins now. For more information about Camp AMICO, or other EXPAND programs, please visit us at BPRexpand.org.

Change in Medicaid Funded Waivers Serving over 400 people each year, EXPAND enhances the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families in our community. The state recently notified Boulder it will no longer approve Medicaid funded waiver reimbursements for EXPAND programs (effective November 30, 2018). A number of EXPAND participants who work with our Community Centered Board, Imagine!, are affected by this decision. While Imagine! has filed an appeal on this decision with the state, we are seeking ways to ensure participants using a Medicaid funded waiver to pay for programs can continue in our programs. As we explore other means of support for affected participants, including different forms of financial aid, we are open to privatepublic partnerships. If you or your organization are interested in learning more, please contact Lori Goldman at Goldmanl@ BoulderColorado.gov. We will keep you updated on Imagine!’s appeal and other developments as information becomes available.

Then & Now

Holidays Downtown

T

This winter, more than 275,000 LED lights will transform Boulder’s downtown Civic Area into an enchanted night forest. The kaleidoscopic light displays will take place each evening beginning Nov. 18 and continuing through January. Municipal displays of holiday decorations date back to at least post-Depression America when many towns and cities sought to improve spirits (and attract retail commerce) following the dire years of the early 1930s. A visit to our friendly, Carnegie Branch History Library (1125 Pine Street) reveled a number of colorful winter traditions from Boulder’s past.

Depression Years During the Depression, the Walker family (think Walker Ranch southwest of Flagstaff Mountain) brought freshly cut evergreen boughs down to Pearl Street Firefighters hand strung them with twine and sprinkled them with sparkly mica flecks, turning them into garlands that were strung across the Pearl Street business district. Public Service (predecessor of Xcel Energy) added 2,500 lights, all in hopes of drawing shoppers downtown during the holidays. Unfortunately, particularly intense Chinook winds blew many of the decorations down, leading future garlands to be securely wrapped around light poles instead of overhead.

Twelfth Night & Miss Merry Christmas From about 1938 through at least the late 1970s, Boulder hosted Colorado’s only known Twelfth Night celebration. Started by Dr. Howard Heuston, a Boulder physician, civic leader and mayor, Twelfth Night celebrated the Christian Epiphany (on Jan. 6), with a giant bonfire fueled by residents’ discarded

Then

Christmas trees. In the early years, city staff collected the trees making a giant pile at Boulder’s Pow Wow Grounds (about where the Mapleton Ballfields and YMCA are today). With development of the YMCA in the mid-1960s, the bonfires migrated to the University of Colorado Boulder campus. For many years, the fires drew large crowds and were ceremonially ignited by Boulder’s mayor, the Chamber of Commerce president and “Miss Merry Christmas”, a young woman selected from Boulder High School. Once Fairview High School (FHS) opened in 1960, a “Miss Noel” (selected from the new FHS student body) joined “Miss Merry Christmas” in participating in the community’s important winter holiday functions.

Santa at the Bandshell Before there was Downtown Boulder’s “Nick on the Bricks” (Saturdays thru Dec. 22 at 1303 Pearl St.), there was Santa at the Bandshell. Built by Boulder Lions Club in 1938, the Lions and other civic groups hosted visits with Santa during the 1950s and 1960s. Lines of excited children and their parents would wrap around the venue’s bench seats waiting for the chance to meet Santa, Miss Merry Christmas and Miss Noel. Today, visitors are treated to a spectacular display of energyefficient lights and several fun evening events under them.

Dec. 8 check out the Freezie Fest downtown (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and enjoy live entertainment and warm drinks at the Boulder Bandshell from 4 to 7 p.m.

Dec. 19 Creekside Caroling at 5:30 p.m. and a special holiday edition Walk with a Doc, 5:45 to 7 p.m., healthy treats, warm drinks, winter fairies and community caroling. Details: SnowMuchFun.org
