Oh beautiful shortbread and Mr. Gingerbread – why do you keep luring me across the room?? After giving yourself permission to indulge, you delve into the “sugar calling galley.” After all, how harmful can a few good men really be? Sure, treating yourself occasionally is fine. The concern is when sugar splurging becomes a routine, rather than a treat. Gauging your sugar intake is all part of obtaining (and maintaining) a healthy weight; sound blood sugar levels; and decreasing the risk of health problems such as heart disease, dental problems and gout. The hiccup is that sugary foods are often empty calories, which if substituted for nutritious choices could leave you short of important nutrients. The other issue is when sugar is consumed in addition to a healthy diet, creating a calorie surplus. Experts encourage slashing daily “added sugar” intake to 6.5 teaspoons (25 grams) for woman and 9.5 teaspoons (38 grams) for men. To decrease sugar, first look at what you are drinking. During the holidays this means sugary drinks, such as eggnog and cocktails. Be aware that the culprit is not just table sugar (sucrose). “Added sugars” are added sugars whether its glucose-fructose, agave syrup, honey, beet sugar, corn syrup, raw sugar, cane juice or brown rice syrup. Label reading can help. Be aware that the sugar amount on the label includes “added” and natural occurring sugars, such as those found in fruit and milk. You can distinguish “natural” from “added” by inspecting the ingredients. Choose foods with little added sugars, while still including fruit and milk products which offer nutrients important for Jessalyn O’Donnell, RD a healthy diet. Thrifty Foods

BAROQUE from NEW YORK CITY Formed in 1973 by five graduates of the Juilliard School, the Aulos Ensemble was one of the first groups to champion historically accurate performance of Baroque music on original instruments. They have remained a stellar quintet all these decades, and their insightful interpretations of that early repertoire invariably get critics polishing their superlatives. For years the Aulos Ensemble has performed a Christmas concert in the Medieval Sculpture Court at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. They occasionally tour this show and, happily, Victoria is on their itinerary this year. As if that isn’t treat enough, they are joining forces with Nancy Argenta, one of Canada’s most acclaimed sopranos, whose clear and flexible voice is
particularly suited for Baroque music. Victoria-based Argenta, who has performed for such “early music” luminaries as Trevor Pinnock and Christopher Hogwood, has played with individual members from Aulos and “jumped at the chance” to perform with the whole ensemble. “Baroque music is often very joyous, so it’s a great fit for Christmas,” Argenta says. “And performing a gorgeous melody simply and beautifully is often the best way,” she adds. “The trick is to find something that is seasonal but also musically interesting.” This Baroque super-group will perform traditional carols as well as Alessandro Scarlatti’s Christmas Cantata and other works by Vivaldi, Bach, and Corrette.
