EDITOR’S LETTER

A walk in celebrity heels BY SUSAN LUNDY

After exploring the spectacular St. Patrick’s Cathedral in mid-Manhattan, I pointed to a photo of Pope Frances on the wall. It’s a bit of family joke because my husband Bruce has similar expressions and facial structure to the new Pope. We often amuse ourselves by Googling images of Pope Frances and comparing them to Bruce. So I directed him to stand under the photo while I pulled out my camera to snap a picture. Suddenly a crowd of Italians appeared. They all wanted photos of Bruce and the Pope! The rest of us burst from the church, chortling, as Bruce, slightly wild-eyed, posed for photos. As always, this issue of Boulevard brushes local celebrity — but there are no mistaken identities here. Meet Andrea Bayne, principal dancer with Ballet Victoria, local entrepreneur and artist Neil Tran, interior designer Kyla Bidgood, Table 21 chef Jason Clifford, and Suzanne Gatrell, who went out on a limb to make her mark in the hotel management world. Travel abounds in this first-of-the-summer issue of Boulevard. Join me for a taste of music, art, food and fun in the “Big Apple;” meet the Dagg family in super summer mode at the cottage; and travel up-island to Painter’s Lodge and April Point Spa and Resort for a behind-the-scenes look at this month’s fashion shoot. And speaking of fashion: stripes are in and they’re big, bold and colourful. There’s something fishy about this issue’s fashion feature — be sure to check it out. Looking for home design inspiration? Try wandering through this issue’s hot property — an Oak Bay charmer. Don’t miss our feature story on sleek, trendy furniture and prepare to feast outside with the best out-of-doors “eat-ware.” Did someone say feast? Chef Heidi Fink loves berries so much she’s incorporated them into every course, both sweet and savoury. It’s a very berry story. Once again, Boulevard is thrilled to present a bit of local celebrity, a dash of luscious lifestyle and all the ingredients for fun in the sun this summer. For my part, I’m happy to kick off Blythe Danner’s heels and enjoy the season walking in my flip-flops. PHOTO BY LIA CROWE

A

PPARENTLY, I LOOK A LITTLE LIKE the actress Blythe Danner. I’ve heard the comparison before and accepted it with amusement (she is after all 20 years my senior), but during a recent trip to New York City, I had the unexpected experience of walking a few steps in Blythe’s heels. It started at the star-studded Tribeca Ball, a fundraiser for the New York Academy of Art, where my daughter attends school. It’s a big deal, attended by numerous celebrities (Al Pacino was there this year), and as I reached for my second glass of champagne, a man in a gleaming suit stopped and studied me. “You look a lot like Blythe Danner,” he said. “I should know; I’ve met her six times.” A few minutes later, someone in the stairwell said “Hi Blythe.” And at the end of the evening some young buck dragged me off to pose in a photo with him. But things got even stranger as our small group of five shimmied in our sleek outfits over to the nearby Roxy Hotel for a drink and bite to eat. My “diamond” earrings must have glimmered as we sat down in the dimly lit lounge because a hush fell over the staff and our Prosecco and frites were delivered with surprising deference. “If there is anything you need …” the server said. To our right sat a drunken couple from Belarus. Suddenly, the woman launched herself towards me, clutching me in a hug and saying in a thick Russian accent, “My husband told me not to bother the celebrity, but I had to come and meet you.” She continued to chat with everyone at our table, periodically stopping midsentence to plant kisses on my cheek. Her husband ordered a round of vodka and began dropping loud hints about the Tribeca Ball’s “after party.” Perhaps we could get them into it? The Russian woman’s accosting of me alarmed the staff and a ruckus ensued. Eventually, I excused myself and escaped downstairs to the bathroom. Later, as I stood in the hallway, heart beating, unable to go back into the lounge, I realized I was unwittingly experiencing the life of a celebrity. I didn’t really like it. This worshipping of celebrity seemed out of place in a city that epitomizes defiant individualism. But this was actually our second brush with it — and the first was even more amusing.

THIS WORSHIPPING OF CELEBRITY SEEMED OUT OF PLACE IN A CITY THAT EPITOMIZES DEFIANT INDIVIDUALISM.

She’s in my ballet class, seems to be behind every cool design project in town, and has a tight personal style that is rivaled only by her mad design aesthetic, which can simply be described as ... highly creative. I met with Kyla at her beautiful heritage home in Esquimalt, where I learned a few things about online shopping and the perfect height for a coffee table (which is roughly 14 inches). I learned that collaboration is at the core of what gets Kyla excited about work these days and what good style means to her. She says, that like good design, it’s all about a fit, proportion and balance.

QUICK FACTS:

• Age 40 • Born in Nanaimo, BC. • Trained at Malaspina College (now Vancouver Island University) in Nanaimo. • Chef at Table 21 since it opened last summer. • Before Table 21, the chef de partie at Fire and Water in the Marriott Hotel, where he worked under executive chef David Rogers.

Chef Jason Clifford’s Tuna Antipasto in the kitchen at Table 21, located in the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Suites Victoria.

What are you best known for as a chef?

Hobbies?

Comfort food. I enjoy taking foods from my childhood and bringing them to the next level.

I don’t have much time these days, so I like to spend all my free time with my family. I’m currently building an ice cream truck with my oldest son, Christopher.

What are the TEN OR SO most important ingredients in your pantry?

Can you share an easy, seasonal recipe for a quick nosh in JUNE/JULY?

Salt, pepper, cumin, coriander, dried chilies, honey, flour, corn meal, vinegar, rice, olive oil and wine. I know that’s more than ten, but I couldn’t leave out the wine.

What’s your favourite dish to cook and eat on a sUMMER day? BBQ — anything barbequed. Nothing beats the taste of BBQ in the summer, but it has to be charcoal. The flavour is unbeatable.

What’s your go-to item when sampling other chefs’ fare? Depends on the menu, but the first time I go to a restaurant I like to try something simple like calamari, pasta, etc.

Brandied watermelon and feta salad 2 oz. wild arugula 2 oz. shredded basil leaves 4 oz. watermelon cubed 1 oz. brandy 2 oz. goat milk feta cheese 30 ml balsamic reduction Marinate cubed watermelon with the brandy, and let sit for 30 min. to an hour. Mix together arugula and basil. Place on plate. Mix together the feta and marinated watermelon. Drizzle with balsamic reduction. (We make our own at the restaurant, but you can find it at any grocery store.) 23

Ballet Victoria principal dancer Andrea Bayne in the studio.

ANDREA BAYNE EMBODYING ART THROUGH DANCE BY ANGELA COWAN PHOTOS BY LIA CROWE

A

RT, WHETHER EXPRESSED THROUGH a paintbrush, an opera or a pair of ballet shoes, is transforming, both for its rapt audience and its creator. For Andrea Bayne, being able to embody her art in dance every day since childhood has been a gift beyond value. Bayne slipped on her first pair of ballet shoes at age three, and has been training professionally since she was 12 years old. A “sensitive perfectionist,” she was immediately drawn to the challenge, to the technique and artistry that ballet offers, plus the opportunity to strive each day to do better than the day before.

That desire to better herself and her craft was also what drew her to Ballet Victoria. A principal dancer since 2008, Bayne has grown personally and professionally as a part of the company. “It’s a small company with what we like to call an ‘iron cast,’” she says. “I have danced with larger companies in the past, but the amazing thing about Ballet Victoria is that you have the opportunity to dance so much and do such a variety of roles. I have not only gotten to perform some incredible principal roles in traditional classical ballets, but I have had several ballets created for me, which is something many dancers don’t get to experience at all through their entire careers.” 25

Finding an emotional authenticity is of vital importance to Andrea Bayne, who came back after a devastating injury this spring to play the role of Shakespeare’s Juliet.

“THIS INJURY REALLY SHOWED ME HOW LUCKY I AM TO BE ABLE TO DO WHAT I LOVE FOR A CAREER. IT TAUGHT ME TO NEVER TAKE A SINGLE DAY FOR GRANTED.”

“BUT DANCE — IT’S THE ONE THING THAT CAN TRANSPORT ME INTO A PLACE WHERE I FEEL COMPLETE.”

Though continually working to better herself and her performance, Bayne was forced to meet an unexpected roadblock head-on last September when she suffered the first debilitating injury of her career. “I remember the fall and hearing a crack in my foot,” she recalls. “I instantly saw the swelling and bruising, yet I refused to believe it was happening.” She had fractured the fifth metatarsal bone in her foot, and for the first time in her life, was unable to work through the pain. Sidelined for the first program of Ballet Victoria’s season, she refused to succumb to pessimism. “I’d had minor injuries, but I’d always been able to push through them. Nothing before this had ever stopped me so dead in my tracks,” she says. “I was devastated, but that didn’t stop my determination.” She recalls, “I cross trained every day and went to physiotherapy five times a week. This injury really showed me how lucky I am to be able to do what I love for a career. It taught me to never take a single day, whether dancing in the studio or on stage, for granted.” Fuelled by her passion and an iron resolve, Bayne eventually recovered and emerged back on stage, ready to face another brand new challenge. Last March, she had the opportunity to embody one of literature’s most iconic and tragic heroines when she took on the role of Juliet, a character she had wanted to play for years.

“[It] was most definitely the highlight of my career with Ballet Victoria,” she says. “[Artistic director] Paul Destrooper created a ballet that lived up to my every expectation.” Bayne spent countless hours preparing for the role, re-reading the play and watching old films and other ballet performances to fully understand the emotionality of the story. “I really wanted to dig deep to discover the true character of Juliet and be able to portray her character in a light that would do both Shakespeare’s brilliance and Paul’s artistic vision justice,” she says. “The choreography was technically demanding and so incredibly dramatic. I dug deep within myself to be able to dance in a way that would strike an emotional chord with the audiences.” Finding an emotional authenticity is of vital importance to the dancer, and that dedication runs so deep into her very being that she found herself being overtaken with an unusual melancholy at the end of each performance. Ballet Victoria toured the show through BC and into Washington to great success, but Bayne experienced a profound and confusing emptiness washing over her each time the curtain fell. “I remember after every performance feeling the high of the standing ovations and the applause, but also feeling this

indescribable sadness and emptiness,” she says. “It was only after my last show, after the final death scene where Juliet kills herself because she is so distraught over her lost lover, that I was able to realize where this empty feeling kept coming from. I was truly living that character on stage.” It’s that melding of technical ability and emotional investment that delivers the best performances, she explains. “Dancers are not only athletes. It’s when they can truly step inside a particular character and dance the steps as though they are a different being that true art is made.” And it’s that transformation, that utter surrender that has captivated Bayne throughout all her years on stage. “Life is like this crazy rollercoaster and I have always been a very dramatic passenger,” she says. “But dance — it’s the one thing that can transport me into a place where I feel complete. Being able to be swept away from my own life, my own world and my own problems is probably one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had.”

HOT PROPERTIES

While the all-white interior may have seemed like a gamble, the effect is one of seamless continuity, and the walls pick up subtle tints from their surroundings, giving off a tinge of blue or cream depending on natural light.

BUT WHILE THE SPACE IS CALM, IT IS NEVER COLD.

S

ITTING PROUDLY AT THE PEAK of a well-treed lot on Beach Drive, one of Oak Bay’s newest architectural additions strikes a balance between the historic and often English charm of the neighbourhood, and modern elements emerging in the design world. The house took a season to design and nearly a year to build, with much consultation occurring between the owners, designer, builder and even neighbours to ensure it fit both the owners’ vision and that of the Oak Bay community. At 3,200 square feet, it’s a little large to truly be called a cottage, but with an offset stone chimney, square bay windows and an eyebrow arch over the front door, it makes an immediate cozy impression. “It was my vision to build what I like to call a modern, cottage-style home,” says the owner, who prefers to remain unnamed. “The constant blend of Oak Bay charm and clean new design was always the goal. I really wanted the house to be unexpected.” The finished product is exactly that. Its interior is warm and welcoming, spacious without seeming too vast, and accented with subtle textures throughout that invite you to curl up in the living room with a blanket and book. Wide plank and wire-brushed engineered oak floors hint at a more rustic feel, as do the thick reclaimed wooden beams in an open ceiling above the dining area and the wooden mantel above the fireplace. European tilt-and-turn windows in a deep charcoal give a particular heritage sense to a wide bank of windows in the great room — which faces into the side yard — and the semisheer linen curtains soften the space. To help achieve that heritage sense, Steve Smith from SC

Smith Building used reclaimed wood for the ceiling beams and mantel, spending weeks researching suppliers and eventually taking a trip to Vancouver to sort through dozens of house-high piles of old wooden planks and boards to find exactly the right pieces. “Sourcing them was tricky,” he laughs, particularly when trying to find two the same length, colour and grain. But in the end it was worth it. The wood grounds much of the lightness of the rest of the design and brings a sense of the outdoors inside. “It’s neat that they have some history to them,” he says, adding that the beams above the dining area actually came from the historic Woodward’s building in Vancouver’s downtown eastside. Contrasting the rustic themes are the many modern elements: the light quartz countertops, the concealed refrigerator and dishwasher, the smooth white kitchen cupboards. Along with the nine-foot ceilings, all the doors are eight feet high, an

Beams above the dining area — from the historic Woodward’s building in Vancouver’s downtown eastside — are one of the features that add a sense of heritage to the house.

unusual choice that lengthens the height of each room. Even the baseboards are a simple squared-off style with no scrollwork. But while the space is calm, it is never cold. Following in a similarly contemporary vein, the choice to paint an all-white interior was a bit of a gamble, says the owner, but the end result is spectacular. By using Benjamin Moore’s White Dove on both the walls and trim, the effect is one of seamless continuity, without a hint of starkness. The walls pick up subtle tints from their surroundings, giving off a tinge of blue or cream depending on natural light, and their neutrality showcases the owners’ vibrant collection of paintings. “We actually built walls around their paintings,” says Smith, gesturing to a large canvas in the great room. The meticulously designed art spaces are just one example of the countless hours of thought invested into the final product. Skylights provide sun and treetop views on the south side of the house as a way to retain privacy from a closely situated neighbouring lot. Heated floors run throughout, both upstairs

and down. Foot-level automatic nightlights flick on when stepping into the en suite in the owners’ bedroom. Even the glass doorknobs used throughout are the result of painstaking decisions by the owners. But perhaps one of the most unique aspects of the design is the fact it was built entirely around the trees on the lot. The property came with a legal covenant protecting a centuries-old Douglas fir, two Garry oaks, and a leafy liriodendron, or tulip tree. Extensive root systems restricted where and how deep the lot could be excavated for a foundation, and also dictated the placement of the house and garage. Smith worked with Oak Bay consulting arborist Jeremy Gye and designer Ryan Hoyt to maximize the allowed footprint for the house, while protecting the established growth on the property. “A ton of time has been taken to protect the trees,” says Smith, who explains that the root systems travel through the entire lot. The positioning of the floor plan, the contours of the finished landscaping, and even the outside perimeter all revolved

“THE BEST THING THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO THIS TREE WAS US TAKING OVER THE PROPERTY.”

around preserving the trees. The back third of the detached garage was cantilevered over the roots of the tulip tree, and the roof was designed so that rain runoff would water its roots. Before the lot was purchased, it was so overgrown with brush that the base of the Douglas fir and the oaks were being choked out. The scrub was so thick, even the ivy encircling the fir’s base was struggling to survive. “The best thing that could have happened to this tree was us taking over the property,” says Smith. Working with the arborist, Smith and his team cleared the lot and had the fir spiral cut to remove dead and dangerous branches. The result — a beautifully landscaped yard with a natural outcropping of rock that shows off the majesty of the protected trees. Along with a fenced-in deck and outdoor gas fireplace, the yard pulls in that same balance between minimalism and respect for the oldfashioned that permeates the home, and anchors it firmly, ensuring it will remain a fixture in Oak Bay for many years to come.

manager of Victoria’s Oswego Hotel since 2008. But it wasn’t until the hotel’s management contract came up at the end of last year that she decided to take a giant leap of faith and go out on her own. “I hadn’t thought about it much until the opportunity presented itself and I started to think, maybe this is the time?” 41

Gatrell says. “I wasn’t sure how it was all going to come about but once I set my mind on it, things just fell into place.” Despite the little bit of serendipity that led to the Oswego Hotel becoming Kingsbridge’s first client, Gatrell admits the transition from employee to business owner wasn’t easy. She says she’s always had an entrepreneurial spirit but despite running the hotel for years, there was a lot she had to learn on the fly. “I thought it was going to be an easy transition because I was already running it, but it was anything but — it was so stressful!” she says. “There were all these things I hadn’t been involved in and it was a lot of work. But it was also very exciting and that fuelled me.” Kingsbridge is trying to carve out a niche for itself by only working with independent hotel properties in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. “There are a lot of management companies out there, but there isn’t anyone saying they don’t want to take on brands, saying they only want to take on boutique properties. So that’s really set me in a different class.” As she tries to grows her new baby, Gatrell’s other baby — her 17-year-old son Sebastien — is getting ready to leave the nest and that’s presented a whole new set of challenges. “He’s going to university and it’s a huge change because it was only the two of us for many, many years and as a result, we have a very strong bond,” Gatrell says. For most of her career, Gatrell has being juggling being a single mom while working in a 24-hour industry. And while she now has the support of a new partner, she was understandably

devastated when her former husband walked out on her when their son was just a baby. “He said he was leaving and we never heard from him again,” Gatrell confides. “My entire world came crashing down and the dreams I had for our life, everything I had aspired to be, was gone except for this little person who was completely dependent on me. But I realized I had a choice — I could either wallow in it or I could say I’m going to do the best I can for my son. So that’s what I did.” If nothing else, Gatrell says, the ordeal taught her perseverance. And after that kind of emotional heartbreak, bumps in the business world are easy to navigate. “When I get in very stressful situations, I go back to those days,” Gatrell says. “I call them my dark days because there was such hurt and pain and I tell myself, nothing will ever be that bad, so therefore, this is good.” It’s that positive attitude that helps Gatrell overcome the big challenges facing the hospitality industry, such as increased competition and a serious staffing shortage, as well as the new challenge of running her own business. “The biggest challenge of running your own business is that it’s all on you!” she laughs. “The buck stops with you on everything, but I try to look at challenges as stepping stones to get to where you want to go.” As for the leap of faith going out on her own? Gatrell says she has no regrets. “You just have to go with your gut and not hold back and not be fearful,” she says. “I’m excited about what the future holds.”

W

HEN VICTORIA RESIDENTS JARED HOBBS AND HIS WIFE moved into their brand new home earlier this year, they knew they wanted to create a space that was tranquil and efficient. They decided to approach the design as a clean slate. “We thought, we want a fresh start,” says Hobbs. “Most of our furniture just didn’t work with the style or the space.” The couple fully embraced West Coast contemporary aesthetics, both in the architecture and design of their newly built home, as well as the slate of new furniture they selected. Shades of grey, mixed textures and complementing wood grains and finishes transformed the interior into a serene and seamless environment. “We wanted an interior space that’s really calming,” says Hobbs. The result is just that. On stepping into the house, your first urge is to kick off your shoes, grab the vibrantly green throw off the sofa and curl up in the living room. Grounded by a soft-grey sectional sofa from Gamma, the space is inviting, particularly as it offers a retreat-like view into the hidden front yard, itself a Garry Oak restoration project. In fact, many of the colours and designs were chosen to echo the

greys and greens of the oaks, effectively bridging the inside and out. The low back of the sofa accentuates the impressive height of both the front of the house and the trees outside, with windows that extend nearly all the way to the second-storey ceiling. And the sofa leather itself has an exquisite semi-aniline natural finish — soft and inviting, promising no sticky moments in summer, nor cold shocks in winter. “[Gamma’s] claim to fame is the quality of the leather and hides they use,” says Andy Trikala of StudioYDesign, who’s been selling Gamma pieces for years and helped find many pieces for Hobbs. The company sources much of its leather from the Nordic regions, he explains, and extreme care is taken with the animals to ensure they live as stress-free as possible, right down to grazing techniques. The semianiline finish is left in a more natural state and processed with vegetable-based dyes and tanning agents, allowing the leather to breathe. It’s a soothing texture and shade that easily ties into the grey fabric of the chairs in Hobbs’ dining area, and contrasts nicely with the rich wood grains of the table. “I knew we were going for this open concept,” says Hobbs,

“WE’RE COMING BACK TO OPEN LIVING AND CLEAN CONCEPTS. IT’S ALL ABOUT FORM AND FUNCTION, AND THE MANTRA THESE DAYS IS LESS IS MORE.”

The grey of the dining chairs complements the grey leather of the sofa, while many of the furniture colour choices aim to subtly bridge the outside with the inside. Floral designs by Thorn & Thistle Flowers.

“and I wanted everything to match.” Match, not in the sense of decades past where the same fabric and wood finish permeated an entire house, but in a way that ties the pieces together in a more subtle fashion. The grey leather of the sofa complements the grey of the dining chairs, while the wood finish of the table contrasts with the darker finish of the desk, a few feet away in an open office. By linking pieces in small ways, the overall design ties together without feeling monochromatic. With open concept floor plans becoming ever more the norm, it might be easy to feel a bit lost in the space. Using furniture to delineate boundaries is a subtle way to put some structure back into the design. “Instead of putting up walls to define your space, you’ve now got your little vignettes of furniture,” says Trikala. A sectional sofa set over a colourful area rug can make a space a “living 58

room” while maintaining expansive sight lines through the home. “Pieces are being floated now,” he adds. “They’re not up against a wall, and so the back details are just as gorgeous.” Like Hobbs’ leather sectional, no matter the angle, it’s a beautifully crafted piece of furniture. The Hobbs are not alone in their design preferences. The trend to West Coast contemporary has been growing stronger for the past few years in Victoria, both in floor plans and furniture, says Trikala. “We’re coming back to open living and clean concepts. It’s all about form and function, and the mantra these days is less is more.” The assumption that bigger is better is fading, he adds. People are focusing heavily on efficiency of space. Just a glance around the showroom at StudioYDesign yields a variety of pieces that are more than they seem: dining tables with self-storage for extending leaves, beds with enclosed storage beneath lifting mattresses, even coffee tables with several personalities.

The Mascotte table by Calligaris is a prime example. A hugely popular item, the table raises up to nearly twice its height, and with a simple twist and unfolding, turns into a dining table that easily seats four. And with wheels on two of the side legs, it’s effortless to relocate. “Lift beds, we don’t seem to be able to keep those in stock,” adds Liz Devooght, manager of Scan Designs. “People really love having that storage available.” It also offers a clean, uncluttered look, a desire that’s crept into dining designs as well. “We have a lot of people asking for benches for dining tables instead of chairs,” says Devooght. clean shades. The spectrum of greys — from warm to cool tones — are often used as a foundation, as are whites, beiges and charcoals, offering a palette that’s clean without being harsh, and working with nearly any pop of accenting colour. “Greys are still quite popular,” says Devooght, adding that they’ve been a consistent foundational shade for more than a year. “And turquoise is pretty hot right now. It seems to really catch people’s attention.” “People love mixing leather and fabrics,” adds Trikala. “And it looks best when you mix up textures and also different periods of furniture.” So if you’re planning on updating your look, don’t feel pressured to trash everything you own just to have a coordinated room. If you love that ornate mahogany coffee table, then show it off, and maybe keep the immediate surroundings more minimalist to balance out the weight of the piece. “It’s all about decluttering for a lot of people” says Trikala. “It can be overwhelming, but just because you’re going to update your look doesn’t mean you have to get rid of all those things.” You can replace one or two pieces to modernize your look, or you can do a complete overhaul, but in the end, amidst all the guidelines and trends, the most important thing is to keep hold of your own sense of style. Talk to friends and family, get ideas from magazines and designers, but remember that it’s ultimately your decision, says Trikala. Stretch into new ideas, but listen to your instinct. “You’re the one coming home at the end of the day and looking at these pieces,” he says. “It’s still your home, and you have to be comfortable in your home.”

“EVERYBODY LOVES TO BE OUT ON THE BOAT AND SWIM AND SPLASH IN THE SUN.”

823 Broughton Street

UrbanSmilesVictoria.com 79

N

ESTLED ON THE SLOPING SHORES of Lake Cowichan in the baking rays of the summer sun, a new community of cottages is giving families the chance to claim a little corner of wilderness bliss for their own, and meeting a vacationing trend that’s on the upswing. With swallows cutting through the air as the dusty scent of mountainside brush rises in the heat, the spot is intoxicating in its seclusion. “It’s got a little magic in it,” says Dan Dagg, whose family just moved into their newly purchased Woodland Shores cottage last month. “Both my wife and I, we both have pretty stressful jobs. When we get up here, 15 minutes into it we begin to unwind and relax, and just appreciate what we’ve got.” Overlooking the impossibly blue waters stretching out for miles from shore, it’s easy to see why the spot is so attractive, and why cottage vacations are overtaking urban getaways and more nomadic vacation plans. Built on permanent foundations and with no zoning restrictions, Woodland Shores cottages are just as easily used as year-round homes, combining absolute freedom of use with a slew of resort-like amenities like a private clubhouse, heated pool and hot tub, fitness centre, nearby hiking trails and a private beach for residents. It also offers a hassle-free experience for summer trips. There are no tents to waterproof, no tarps to hang, no trailers to haul and no coolers of melted ice to drain. “There’s no packing. There’s no preparation,” says Dagg. “You just get in the car and go. We can actually spend Sunday night there, get up Monday morning and be at the office at 9 a.m.”

The Daggs have been vacationing at Lake Cowichan in tent or trailer for the last 20 years, and always had an eye to create a more permanent family spot. “We’ve been dreaming of a cottage and looking at them for a really long time,” he says. “We finally saw these particular cottages go in, and they met all the things we needed,” particularly the built-in marina for the family boat. “Probably the number one thing we like to do is boat. That’s the main reason we got a cottage on the lake.” Their home away from home provides an escape from their everyday hectic routines and the chance to reconnect with each other on a level that can be difficult when inundated with work commitments and the daily barrage of texts and emails. “It’s nice, just the downtime,” says Dagg. “We don’t want to do anything other than go and hang out at the cottage. Everybody loves to be out on the boat and swim and splash in the sun.” “What’s nice about the cottage is that everybody wants to go there,” he adds. “It brings the family together.” With four kids ranging from nine to 23 years old, organizing family vacations that satisfy everyone can be challenging, he says, but the spot has proven to be a hit with the whole family. Whether spending their days on the boat, swimming, water skiing or even taking an afternoon to tube the Cowichan River, fun is virtually guaranteed. Given that cottage life offers a balance between convenience and “getting away from it all,” it’s unsurprising that interest is on the rise among Canadians, according to a RE/MAX Recreational Property Report released last summer.

Based on an independent survey, the report shows that 68 per cent of Canadians “would rather spend a long weekend at the cottage or cabin over a big city getaway.” This enthusiasm for cottage life spanned all ages and all regions of the country, but was most prominent in BC and Ontario, and among families with children and retirees. The report also said 21 per cent of Canadians “would downsize their main residence in order to purchase a cottage, cabin or ski chalet, demonstrating that Canadians are looking for alternative ways to finance their dream properties.” Now in its second year of construction, the popularity of the Woodland Shores cottage community is proof of that rising interest. “We’re optimistic that we’re going to sell out the majority of the units this season,” says Woodland Shores co-owner Brad Schaffer. The community will have 53 units in total and is about half built-out now, with a wide variety of prospective buyers showing interest. Young couples with kids, baby boomers looking for a weekend getaway, and even some folks up into their 70s have already bought in. “People who are younger who are buying in, they’re doing it for the sense of community and getting that experience now,” says Schaffer. It’s giving families an affordable option to get out

in nature and get the kids — and parents — away from screen time and into the fresh air. And for the older generations, securing a permanent spot at the lake can build a family legacy, something parents can leave for their children and grandchildren that hearkens back to a friendlier time. With the growing tight-knit community throughout the cottages, there’s also the comforting sense of neighbours looking out for one another. “It’s like it used to be,” adds Schaffer, “when kids could just run out and you didn’t have to worry about them. It allows kids to be kids.” “You wander through and people on their balconies will wave and say ‘hi.’ It’s sort of like taking a step back in time,” says Dagg. “We’re looking forward to our kids making friends.” He adds: “I really want to pass this on to the kids, so it’s there for them." And though they’ve only just moved in, already endless summer adventures stretch out before the family. As the newly planted trees and landscaping take root and grow, so too will memories of lazy lake days, sun-soaked afternoons on the water and conversation-laden suppers in the waning evening heat. “It’s the perfect spot for us,” says Dagg. “The whole family’s just thrilled.”

“YOU WANDER THROUGH AND PEOPLE ON THEIR BALCONIES WILL WAVE AND SAY ‘HI.’ IT’S SORT OF LIKE TAKING A STEP BACK IN TIME."

Berry DELICIOUS VERSATILE BERRIES ADD PIZZAZZ TO EVERY COURSE BY HEIDI FINK PHOTOS BY DON DENTON

88

B

ERRIES ARE USUALLY reserved for desserts and snacks, but I say they can provide pizzazz to recipes in every part of the menu. They run the flavour spectrum from fruity and sweet to tart and complex; their hints of dark wine or light citrus complement a variety of menu items. I find berries so delicious that I have been incorporating them into recipes both sweet and savoury for many years. Paired with roasted meats, grilled fish, cheeses or cocktails, berries will surprise and entice with their versatility. I love to use them in chutneys and spicy salsas, in quick pan sauces and, naturally, in a variety of desserts. Recipes of almost every kind can benefit from re-vamping with a berry twist. Spiced berry chutneys are first on my list as an excellent foil for roasted and grilled meats. Aside from jam, chutneys are the best way to experiment with heritage varieties of berries, such as gooseberries and currants. Think of this like cranberry sauce, but with more panache. I serve them with charcuterie and cheese platters, in rustic sandwiches, with turkey dinner at Thanksgiving, or with a grill-roasted pork loin in the summer. A quicker way to incorporate berries into a savoury dish is through a pan sauce. Pan sauces are made quickly with berries, wine and other aromatics in the gorgeous brown juices left from sautÊed or roasted meats. Pork, poultry and game are particularly well matched with the zing and fruit-forwardness of berries. A favourite of mine is seared duck breast with blueberry and red wine sauce. Below, I have constructed a berry-rich summer menu meant to be enjoyed al fresco. Each course includes a berry component: fruity Prosecco cocktails, spiced gooseberry on the charcuterie platter, duck with blueberry pan sauce, and the final flourish of a light and dreamy berry cheesecake. The summer doesn’t start any better than this.

NECTARINES AND BERRIES IN PROSECCO Serves 8 Feel free to substitute other berries or stone fruit.

½ lb nectarines or peaches, peeled, pitted and cut into 1/4-inchthick slices 1 pint (½ litre) strawberries, hulled and cut lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices (small strawberries can be halved or quartered) 1 pint (½ litre) fresh raspberries ½ cup sugar, or more as needed 4 tsp orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier or Cointreau Finely grated zest from 1 lemon or lime 1 bottle Prosecco, chilled Place the nectarines, berries, sugar, orange liqueur and lemon or lime zest in a mixing bowl. Toss well and refrigerate for at least 1 hour and no longer than 4 hours. Just before serving, divide the fruit mixture evenly between 8 champagne flutes or martini glasses. Pour the chilled wine over the fruit. Serve immediately.

SPICED GOOSEBERRY CHUTNEY

Makes two cups (two jars). Adapted from a Canadian heritage recipe, this is a perfect side for cheese, turkey, duck, chicken or pork (grilled, roasted or cured). Add a delicious twist to a charcuterie platter, a rustic sandwich or a meal of roasted poultry or game. This recipe is easily doubled or tripled. Make sure to use a

large enough pot to accommodate the increase in volume. NOTE: If you don’t want to use a canner, pour the chutney into the jars, screw on the lids and let cool overnight. 1 cup sugar ¼ cup cider vinegar or lemon juice ¼ cup water ¼ tsp salt 2 whole allspice berries 1 cinnamon stick, (about 2 inches/5 cm), broken 6 whole cloves 4 pods green cardamom 2-½ cups gooseberries, topped and tailed In large Dutch oven, stir together sugar, vinegar, water and salt. In a double thickness of cheesecloth, tie together allspice, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom; hit a few times with rolling pin to crush spices and release flavour. Add to pot. Bring to a boil over high heat; reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for 3 to 5 minutes, until fragrant. Add gooseberries and return to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring frequently and adjusting heat so the sauce bubbles very gently, until thickened and berries are tender, 20-30 minutes (this may take more time with a doubled or tripled recipe). Remove spice bag. Holding firmly with tongs, press the bag against the inside of the pot to squeeze the juices back into chutney. BE CAREFUL while doing this! Discard bag and spices. If you are not canning the chutney, ladle it into clean jars, screw on the lids and let cool overnight. Store in the refrigerator

up to 6 weeks. Or you can serve within an hour or two (as long as it is cool enough not to burn your mouth). To can the chutney: Ladle into two 1-cup (250 ml) hot sterile canning jars, leaving 1/3-inch (1 cm) of headspace. Wipe rims with a clean cloth. Cover with new lids, which have been kept in hot water (to soften the seal). Screw on bands finger tight. Place in boiling water canner and boil for 10 minutes. Remove to a folded cloth and let cool for 24 hours. Check seals before labelling and storing. Any that haven’t sealed can be kept in the fridge for up to six weeks.

SEARED DUCK BREAST WITH BLUEBERRY SAUCE

Serves 4 The long, slow cooking, skin-side-down, allows the duck breast to render out all of its fat without over-cooking the meat. Berries are an excellent pairing with duck and game. Serve with buttered new potatoes and roasted green beans or asparagus. 4 boneless duck breast halves Salt and ground black pepper 2 medium shallots, minced (about ⅓ cup) Zest from one orange, thinly sliced or minced 2-3 tsp light brown sugar ½ cup dry red wine ¾ cup fresh blueberries, divided ¾ cup chicken broth 1 Tbsp orange juice (optional) 1 tsp lemon juice 2 Tbsp cold unsalted butter

QUICK IDEAS FOR SERVING BERRIES • Arrange a mixture of berries in a parfait glass or champagne flute and top with lemon-scented whipped cream (mix lemon zest with sweetened cream and whip OR mix 50/50 lemon curd with whipped cream). • Toss sliced strawberries in Grand Marnier or other fruity liqueur. Serve the berries with crème fraîche, or use them as a sophisticated topping for sorbet, ice cream, or crepes. • Puree fresh berries with creamy yogurt and freeze in Popsicle molds. • Make a fruit butter: mix ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened, with 3 Tbsp homemade berry jam of any kind. Delicious on freshly baked scones or muffins. • Slice berries, or mash part of the berry measure, toss with a bit of sugar and let stand until juicy. Serve on top of quality ice cream. • Grill pitted peach and nectarine halves and fill the centres with a small scoop of raspberry or blueberry sorbet. Top with matching fresh berries. • Dip fresh berries in melted chocolate (white, milk or dark), place on a parchment-lined tray and let cool until chocolate is firm. Serve. • Mix lightly bruised berries with scented sugar. (Make scented sugar by combining sugar with either split vanilla bean pods or scented rose-geranium leaves in an airtight container and setting aside for one week.) • Pile berries on your oatmeal or yogurt for a breakfast or snack

the duck to a carving board, tent loosely with foil and let rest while making the sauce. Pour off all but 1 tablespoon of the fat left in the skillet. Add the shallots and cook over medium-high heat until softened, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the wine, orange zest, sugar, and half a cup of the blueberries and cook until blueberries have given off their juice and the liquid is getting syrupy, about five minutes. Add the chicken broth and simmer about five minutes. Whisk butter into the sauce, then remove pan from heat and stir in the lemon juice, remaining quarter cup of blueberries, and optional orange juice. Taste and adjust for salt. Slice the duck breasts thin into crosswise strips and arrange on a platter or individual plates. Pour the sauce over the duck and serve.

DREAMY FRESH BERRY CHEESECAKE

Serves 8 to 10 This berry pie is more akin to a light mousse than to a traditional heavy cheesecake, which perfectly suits as a light finish to a summery outdoor meal. It wins rave reviews every time I serve it. It can be a bit messy to serve, but can be made into individual tartlets to avoid this problem.

Set aside about 1½ cups of the fruit, making sure you chose the nicest and most beautiful berries for this. Put the remaining fruit in a medium pot and add little bit of water (start with Ÿ cup, and add more later on if you think you need it). Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for a few minutes, until fruit starts to breaks down and give off its juice. Use a fork or potato masher to lightly mash the fruit, and simmer for a few minutes more. Add the sugar and honey and bring to a boil again. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring and mashing the fruit until the mixture looks darker and glossy, with the consistency of runny jam, about 10 minutes. Stir in optional lemon juice, if using. Pour into a bowl and let cool for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Now mix the remaining fruit into the cooked fruit and pour over the cheesecake. Refrigerate the cheesecake until ready to serve. The fruit sauce will never completely gel, so another option, for prettier presentation, is to serve the cake plain, with a scoop of the sauce on top or underneath each piece of cake as you serve it.

CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS ART, CULTURE AND A GLITZY BALL IN NEW YORK CITY BY SUSAN LUNDY

T

he force of New York City hits like a wall as we emerge from the train station on Canal Street in Lower Manhattan. It’s 9 p.m. and the road is a blaring, honking, screeching mess of traffic. Throngs of people barrel through intersections, defiant of traffic signals, their voices a mishmash of urgency and accord. I feel a bubble of laughter — this city is alive! “We” are four: my husband, my younger daughter and her boyfriend. We land at the station to make our way to the New

96

York Academy of Art, where my elder daughter, Danica, is a student. Here, she’ll tour us around the studios ahead of the academy’s glitzy Tribeca Ball fundraiser. The foremost purpose of our trip is to visit Danica and attend the ball. Secondary, is to cram as much of NYC into five days as possible. Travelling in a group, we each have different NYC priorities and not much time. Our combined interests include art, architecture, food, fashion, music, history and culture. Can we do it all?

“ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IN A NEW YORK MINUTE” Art is the easiest to find as it sits around every corner. There’s public art, private art, artful street advertising and, of course, some of the biggest and best museums and galleries in the world. Our art immersion occurs at the NYAA, where, during the private tour of student studios, we view an overwhelming array of dazzling and evocative figurative and representational art. Founded in 1980 by a group of artists including Andy Warhol, the academy accepts 50 students each year from all over the world for its Masters program. It holds several annual fundraising events but the Tribeca Ball is the most extravagant. Deciding the $1,500-US-per-plate dinner tickets are out of reach (sponsors can purchase tables of 10 with a few extra perks for $50,000), we splurge on $300 US cocktail tickets, which gives us two hours of endlessly flowing champagne, gourmet bites and access to six floors of artists in their studios, interactive art installations, live drawing presentations and musical performances. I’m not good at celebrity spotting, but there are a bunch of them here, from actors Al Pacino, Brooke Shields and Naomi Watts to fashion designer Vera Wang and other famous people like Eileen Guggenheim and Andre Balazs. “That’s my champagne,” says a French accent to my left as I stand gazing at the bar selection. Normally, I’d think he meant, “That’s my favourite champagne.” Here, I realize, it could actually be his champagne.

Models dressed as “sirens” and wearing gleaming Van Cleef & Arpels jewels are just part of the dazzling visuals at the New York Academy of Art’s star-studded Tribeca Ball fundraiser.

The event’s theme “To the Far Horizon” takes guests on a journey across the seven seas. There’s a shimmering jellyfish forest, enchanted coral reefs and seductive sirens decked out in gleaming Van Cleef & Arpels jewels. Ultimately, the evening raises over $850,000 and is written up in everything from Vogue to The New York Times. I’m thankful I’ve already seen the art because the “people watching” is irresistible — from the breathtaking gowns, picture-perfect faces and swanky men’s attire to the truly outlandish get-ups. My younger daughter, who has a diploma in fashion design, spends much of the night trying unsuccessfully to find designer Vera Wang. She wears one of her own creations, reaping appraising looks, plus an interview with the Washington Post. Danica, in her studio, gets to meet and greet the beautiful people as they glide by. The NYAA’s Tribeca Ball is a big, glitzy affair, and anyone visiting New York in April, should definitely spring for tickets. 98

BITES IN THE BIG APPLE Food in New York is bountiful, diverse and delish. I’m certain there’s nothing you can’t find. We eat Malaysian in Little Italy; discover heavenly Indian fare in an out-of-sight diner; sample mescal alongside upscale Mexican bites in Tribeca; and suck on a hookah with our Egyptian cuisine in Long Island City. At the Chelsea Market we slurp back the best oysters I’ve ever tasted and then, as we wander around, wish we had room to sample everything else there from “Japanese-inspired Mexican” to vegan sushi. Most eats occur via happenstance, but we did plan one event: Afternoon Tea in the Lobby Lounge at the Mandarin Oriental — a bit of investigative journalism for someone from famousfor-high-tea Victoria. The elegant, 35th-floor Mandarin Lobby Lounge offers spectacular views over Columbus Circle and Central Park through its floor-to-ceiling windows. My husband chooses Rose of New York tea and a Baby

Buddha cocktail (Hendrick’s gin, cucumber, cilantro, lime, sparkling sake), while I go with Long Life Green tea and Bella Pesca (champagne, St. Germain, grapefruit, lychee, Chambord). The baked goods — including homemade ginger scones and melt-on-the tongue jam — and dainty sandwiches are delicious and artfully presented, but I’m not sure the food beats the Victoria’s Fairmont Empress.

”CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS” Travelling with a bunch of musicians, it’s imperative we experience a little New York nightlife. So thanks to a few pulled strings, we find ourselves at a front row table in the jam-packed, pitch-black Terra Blues club, stomping our feet to the riveting sound of Hazmat Modine. Located on the famous Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village, this authentic blues saloon has featured myriad musical “greats” over the years. It serves over 300 types of imported and domestic whiskies, and my husband looks like a kid in a candy store as he tries to make a selection.

Hazmat Modine, with lead singer Wade Schuman, kicks into high gear at Terra Blues on Bleecker Street.

The dazzling, nine-piece Hazmat Modine, which has played all over the world, storms the stage with a rocking, upbeat sound that blows us away. Lead singer Wade Schuman is a show unto himself. What a voice. Later that night, with the help of “someone who knows someone who knows someone,” we land in a nondescript

pizza joint further down Bleecker Street, where a group of people stands at the far end of the room, lining up as if for the washroom. Ushered to the front of the line, we slip up a narrow stairway … and into a fire-code-defying crush of people, dancing, gyrating and standing three-deep at the bar. It’s an otherworldly experience — like we’ve tripped down an NYC rabbit hole.

There are so many things to do and see in New York, New York, it’s impossible to fit it all in. But here are some recommendations. • Visit the Chelsea Market and from there walk the High Line, a 2.3-kilometre elevated park and walkway that meanders past intriguing architecture, with distance views of the Empire State and Chrysler buildings. • View the city from the water. One of the best ways to do this is to take the Staten Island ferry — a free, 25-minute trip that motors you right past the Statue of Liberty and offers stunning views of the NYC skyline. We run out of time to do this, so instead, cross the bridge to Brooklyn at nighttime. The reward is a breathtaking vantage point of the city all lit up and glittering across the water. • Walk! Visit Grand Central Station, St. Patrick’s Cathedral,

Central Park, Madison Avenue and the United Nations (remember to take your passport if you want a tour). In Lower Manhattan, the 9/11 Memorial Plaza is worth seeing; and shoppers looking for a deal should check out East Village consignment stores. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what you do in NYC, just being there promises a sensory explosion of taste, sound, scent and vision. Riding the train from our Airbnb in Long Island City, I liked to pass the time examining the faces — so many shapes and colours — and listen to the intermingling languages and accents. More than once Steve Earle’s song City of Immigrants played through my head as I considered the convolution of cultures that co-exist here. New York City has its own vibe; it own pulse. More than a city that never sleeps, it’s a city that feels alive.

HEALTH & FITNESS

SETTING THE BARRE

DANCE-INSPIRED WORKOUT OFFERS A “QUICK FIT” FOR SUMMER BY CHELSEA FORMAN PHOTOS BY DON DENTON 106

Justina Bailey at StudioFitness Victoria.

S

OMEWHERE BETWEEN LATE JANUARY and early spring many of us succumb to the warmth of snuggly blankets and Netflix series, and our revolutionary “New Year, New You” plans slide between the couch cushions. But with the first sign of that sweet summer warmth reminders abound — being fit is the best way to enjoy outdoor activities. And for those looking to get fit quickly, there is a light — not at the end of a tunnel — but at the end of a ballet barre. Barre fitness is a ballet-inspired workout, which incorporates other fitness techniques like Pilates, calisthenics and yoga to create a long, lean and fit figure. Using a ballet barre and mats, these unique, high-energy classes are designed to tighten and tone muscles, while improving posture, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. And no, one absolutely does not need to be a dancer to show up to a barre class. That being said, any dancers who have turned in their ballet slippers will particularly love this workout for its graceful movements and transforming results. Shelly McCaffrey, a dedicated participant of barre classes says, “I don’t dance anymore, but barre fitness allows me to get the conditioning and maintain the muscles of a dancer.” She says barre classes are, “really hard, but so fun. You can feel that good burn as the movements focus on new muscles that can be missed in a more traditional workout.” Barre fitness classes generally follow a fairly consistent structure — warm-up, light hand weights, and then exercises at the ballet barre designed to tone and shape the legs, backside and waistline. Although it occurs in a class setting, barre fitness is a personal and customizable workout because participants control how deeply they go into an exercise, making it wonderful for beginners and experts alike. Justina Bailey, owner of StudioFitness Victoria, describes why barre classes are so effective at transforming the figure in record time. “We use elegant and full-range movements to increase your metabolism and activate dormant muscles, which atrophy due to modern day lifestyles. Your deep core and postural muscles as well as the energy systems of the body are activated and revitalized.” Bailey incorporates cardio bursts in her classes to elevate the heart rate in short durations. She explains that, “Modern science is now disputing the once-believed approach to fat-burning is by working out at a continuous level for a long duration of time. The new research shows that it can actually disrupt hormone levels, which in turn makes it more difficult to shed those unwanted pounds.”

“I DON’T DANCE ANYMORE, BUT BARRE FITNESS ALLOWS ME TO GET THE CONDITIONING AND MAINTAIN THE MUSCLES OF A DANCER.”

Barre class at StudioFitness Victoria.

For those looking to dramatically change their figure, experts recommend taking three barre classes a week. Strength and resistance training helps boost resting metabolism, which allows participants to burn more calories and fat while resting. Kristen Jensen, owner of Alive Mindbody Studio describes barre fitness as, “A healthy, functional workout. The classes are easy, as there is no harsh impact to joints, but also difficult because exercises target muscles that we may not generally work.” She adds, “Barre fitness is a fantastic option for those individuals suffering from any knee, hip or back issues, and also pre- and post-natal women, because most of the exercises

maintain a standing upright position, and offer the stability of the ballet barre.” Regardless of what a student’s personal situation is, Jensen says, she is always amazed by the way people walk into a barre class, as opposed to how they leave one — with strong postures and renewed energy. Barre experts agree: after just a few classes participants become more aware of their bodies, and experience significant improvement to posture, eventually leading to more fluid and graceful day-to-day movements. So dance on — barre is a great way to get fit and enjoy the summer with renewed strength and energy.

HOOKS, LINES & THE SILLY HOUR BEHIND THE SCENES AT A FISHING LODGE FASHION SHOOT

BY SUSAN LUNDY

E’VE HIT THE SILLY HOUR. As make-up artist Jen Clark and I crest the hill on a lovely, quiet Quadra Island road, we see Boulevard fashion director Lia Crowe and photographer Cathie Ferguson doubled over in laughter. Cathie’s camera and tripod sit in the middle of the street, while a few metres away, model Sierra Lundy perches on the back of a golf cart,

and the driver, April Point Spa and Resort executive chef Matt McGinn, looks on, bemused. Jen nods knowingly. It’s 3 p.m. and the shoot, which started at 8 o’clock this morning, is destined to temporarily unravel over the next half hour or so. Apparently, it happens every time and the best remedy is chocolate. “There’s a point around the fifth shoot, where you’ve had

Painter’s Lodge all lit up at night.

Painter’s Lodge in Campbell River and Quadra Island’s April Point Spa and Resort, which is a 10-minute boat ride away. Thick lines on the boathouse’s aluminum siding, combined with shorter lines on the dock underfoot, offered a sublime backdrop for the stripes-themed fashion shoot. “Well, dang,” we all concur, looking at the boat. Aiming to get behind the scenes of a Boulevard fashion shoot, I arrived at the popular fishing lodge the previous evening, just as Lia and Cathie scouted the final location — this one in the Painter’s Lodge dining room — where they hoped to create a luxurious breakfast scene. Lia, a former fashion model, sat in one of the chairs and struck a pose. “Something like this?” she asked, and then moved to another table. “Or this?” “Where will the sun be in the morning?” Cathie wondered, looking around the bright room, which sits perched right on the edge of the ocean. Once they’d chosen the best positioning and reserved the table for the following morning, the two headed back to their room to rifle through a closetful of clothing and accessories collected from retailers in Victoria and Duncan. The next step was to match outfits to all seven shoot locations. In creating the fashion story, Lia needed to pull together the fashion theme (stripes) plus the storyline, which focused on the experience of being at the two sister resorts. Offering a full slate of adventures — from fishing, whale and grizzly watching and

wildlife tours to golf and an expansive spa menu — the resorts presented ample options to set the scenes. Shoot day started with 6:45 a.m. alarm. Model Sierra had barely opened her eyes by the time Jen began applying make-up at 7:15. Pulling items from a tableful of brightly hued tubes, jars, sponges and brushes, Jen deftly layered on creams and colours. For the first round of photos, she aimed to bring out Sierra’s eyes and brows, leaving the rest of her face more natural. A change in makeup mid-day, transformed Sierra’s eyes once again, this time into a dramatic green-blue match for the upcoming outfits. Jen was also on hair duty, altering the style for each shoot: leaving it long and flowing at “breakfast;” braiding in a scarf for golfing, and putting it up under a hat for a zooming boat shot. At each location, Sierra changed into a new outfit while Lia — whose vision of the entire story guided each tiny detail — tried out accessories and shoes, standing back, tilting her head and waiting for the inevitable “flashes” of inspiration. Jen helped too, offering Lia suggestions and another critical eye. Because all the clothing and accessories are on loan, great care is taken to maintain perfect condition. For example, shoes are taped on the bottom and then placed on Sierra’s feet once she is in place. Any walking is done in her own shoes. Clothing is carried gingerly in bags on hangers, while precious pieces of jewelry are, like the shoes, brought out at the very last minute.

LIA NEEDED TO PULL TOGETHER THE FASHION THEME (STRIPES) PLUS THE STORYLINE, WHICH FOCUSED ON THE EXPERIENCE OF BEING AT THE TWO SISTER RESORTS.

Visitors relaxing at April Point and (below) Lia Crowe and Jen Clark placing shoes on Sierra Lundy.

While Lia and Jen prepped Sierra, Cathie headed to the shoot sites, picking through her big bag of camera equipment, setting up the tripod, checking out the light and looking through the viewfinder to frame the best backdrop. Once each shoot began, she joined Lia in directing Sierra. Her camera clicked, she zoomed in and out, moved around and stopped to have a look at her progress. The whirring camera launched Sierra into constant motion. She was directed into some positions, others she created herself. Her face became a moving picture of expressions: from pensive to engaging to head-tilted-back laughing. My face hurt in sympathy just watching. Day-long shoots are full-body exhausting, she agreed, but they’re also invigorating. For her, the first shoot of the day is often the toughest. But the result of today’s breakfast shoot is splendid. The light is soft and the table, laden with an artful platter of fresh fruit and a yogurt parfait from the kitchen, oozes ambiance. And we all coveted the striped dress she wears. In fact, we oohed and aahed over most of the fashion as we moved through shoots. Activities at the lodge carried on behind us — fishing guide Ron Collins and his guest from Alberta, James Werbicki, gutted and filleted the fish they’d caught, throwing the heads to a trio of seals waiting just under the dock. Andrew Buckland, another fishing guide, tinkered with his boat, the Tyee Princess, and we pulled him into one of the shoots. Other guests at the lodge lounged on the patio, enjoying lunch or afternoon cocktails. The sun shone. The ocean murmured. An eagle called from a nearby tree. It was a glorious day. Back at April Point in the silly hour, we’ve delayed making a decision on the boathouse and we’re focusing instead on a second wharf shoot. Still a bit giddy, everyone gets a good laugh when Lia, aiming to brush a piece of hair off Sierra’s face, actually pokes her in the eye. Sierra throws back her head, laughing, while Cathie snaps the camera and says it’s a perfect shot. In the end, the boathouse scene is easily resolved. Sierra is

And as we pack up the clothes and prepare for one final shoot on the water taxi, chef Matt places a tiny bowl on a table in front of us. He’s found little Coca Cola candies and we all dive in. It’s not chocolate, but it does the trick. We survive the silly hour and, later, after a relaxing feast in the fireside lounge at Painter’s Lodge, we head home with camera full of spectacular images and a cache of great memories.

Jazz master Joe Lovano takes centre stage at the McPherson Playhouse June 27.

TENOR OF THE TIMES

T’S NO SMALL IRONY that one of the world’s greatest saxophone players is coming to JazzFest and that he will be overshadowed by less accomplished musicians working in genres other than jazz. “I thought it was really important that we support a jazz instrumentalist of his calibre,” says Monte Prior, a partner with the legal firm of Pearlman Lindholm, and the man who spearheaded their Lovano sponsorship. “Joe is one of the most important jazz musicians in the world today. This would be a big event in a jazz city like New York . . . it’s a huge deal for Victoria.” Lovano has been hailed as a jazz master for a few decades now, having won Grammys and played and recorded with global superstars like Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner. Prior, who has volunteered with JazzFest for a decade and been board president for the last five years, has clear memories of when Lovano first played Victoria, nearly 20 years ago. “I knew him from records, but live I thought he was amazing,” Prior says. “A good musician is someone you can connect with, and Joe’s tone holds your attention. His music stands up to repeated listening.” Considered brilliant but accessible, Lovano can delve into jazz history or be totally contemporary … often in the same song. And nobody plays prettier ballads. “The sax has really lent itself to improvisation in post-World War Two jazz,” adds Prior. “Tenor sax is to modern jazz what the electric guitar is to rock ‘n’ roll.”

A MUSICAL BOUQUET People began asking in late January for the summer music calendar so they could start making plans,” says Craig Moddle, entertainment manager at Butchart Gardens. “Our summer festival is getting very popular.” Moddle is referring to the 64 consecutive nights of live music that start in early July and finish in early September and are free with admission to the gardens. For a decade their musical programming has been very ambitious, and these days it consists of excellent island and regional acts ranging from the Victoria Symphony to Vancouver bluesman Jim Byrnes, as well as occasional superstars — Jann Arden and Portland’s ultra-cool Pink Martini have performed in recent years. Aside from offering great music in a beautiful outdoor setting, firstrate technicians provide sound that rivals or surpasses many of the city’s best venues. “A lot of bands comment on how much they like our acoustics,” says Moddle, who has evolved into a key Victoria impresario. The lineup always includes local favourites such as guitarstar Marc Atkinson, the pop-jazz of Chris Millington, and bluegrass mandolin maestro John Reischman. Then there are this year’s big names, including Britain’s Celtic party faves The Oysterband, the Great Lake Swimmers, the danceable

IMAX TO THE MAX People love showing off their big high-definition TVs, but nobody can compete with Victoria’s IMAX director Paul Wild, who recently unveiled a state-of-the-art laser system at his downtown theatre. At a cost of just over a million dollars — not counting those fancier seats and 3D glasses worth $50 a pop — the new system is the fourth in Canada (and one of only 27 worldwide). Employing futuristic technology, laser projection offers stunning visual clarity, enhanced brightness, richer colours and more dramatic sound. Add in the fact that our local IMAX has the largest movie screen in BC, and the theatre now offers an intensely immersive film experience. “The system has exceeded my expectations,” says a clearly pleased Wild. “The feedback we’ve been getting ranges from ‘It’s gorgeous … we love it’ to ‘It’s stunning!’”

Their summer lineup includes American Wild, a captivating tour of America’s national parks, and A Beautiful Planet, an otherworldly look at Earth narrated by Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence. According to Wild, the must-see film is Living in the Age of Airplanes, a human-centred look at the age of aviation. “I saw it at an IMAX convention last year and it was the buzz of the conference,” Wild notes. “I instantly made the decision to hold off on booking it till we got laser.” And don’t overlook those Hollywood blockbusters they screen in the evenings, which will be more jaw dropping than ever. “We’ve really transformed our theatre experience here,” says Wild.

ART HISTORY Oak Bay’s Eclectic Gallery consistently punches above its weight, and the current show is remarkable indeed. Entitled Modern Visionaries, it comprises well over 150 pieces that range from the ceramics of Walter Dexter to paintings and sculptures by the likes of Herbert Siebner and Elza Mayhew. People who know their Victoria art history will recognize these names as being charter members of the Limners, a group of about a dozen professional local artists with modernist sensibilities who, starting in the early 1970s, were

destined to create art of national and even international importance. “As pieces sell they’ll disappear off the wall and more will go up,” says gallery owner John Taylor. “This is the third year for a [Limners-themed] show and it’s become our most successful event of the year.” Over half of the pieces will be by internationally renowned ceramicist Dexter, who passed away a year ago. “He was one of Canada’s most significant potters … he’s right up there with the best of the best,” adds Taylor. Other highlights include collages by Robin Skelton, etchings by LeRoy Jensen and pieces by fabled printmaker Pat Martin Bates — some as tiny as an inch square. There are also some significant non-Limner works included in the show, such as two Chagall lithographs, and paintings by Leslie Poole, Phyllis Serota and Jean-Paul Riopelle. “The Limners were a genial band of rebels who celebrated art and celebrated life,” says Taylor. “This show offers significant works by these local masters.”

Running until June 30 at 2170 Oak Bay Avenue. For information, see Eclectic Gallery.

THE BARD ATTENDS CAMOSUN The Greater Victoria Shakespeare Festival started its life in a big tent down at the Inner Harbour a quarter century ago, and is now entering its 11th year on the grounds at Camosun College. And with recent attendance totals reaching 3,500, the GVSF is doing very well indeed. “Bringing Shakespeare to a wide swath of people, in a beautiful outdoor setting where you’re sitting on a blanket and seeing the moon come up over the stage — that’s pretty special,” says Karen Lee Pickett, the festival’s producing artistic director. This year’s lineup pairs The Winter’s Tale with Twelfth Night, and Pickett is impishly amused to be programming two “winter” plays in what she hopes will be a hot and dry summer. “I’ve been wanting to do Winter’s Tale for years,” she says. “It’s a bit magical, a bit of fairy tale, and is one of Shakespeare’s uncategorizable, late-in-life plays akin to The Tempest.” It alternates with the Bard’s classic comedy that starts with a shipwreck and involves lots of switched identities and switched genders. “I also thought that these two plays were a good match for our ‘repertory’ approach where we cast a company of actors who have roles in both plays,” she adds. Pickett has been a professional actor for 25 years, and has taken pains to work closely with the local acting community. “There’s a higher quality of work at the festival these days,” says Pickett. “Maybe that’s why attendance is still growing.”

Running from July 7-30. For information, see Greater Victoria Shakespeare Festival.

physical,” says Fran Gebhard, who is directing the play for Blue Bridge Theatre. “The characters are interesting and the text is very, very brilliant — it’s Wilde’s best work.” Gebhard has long taught acting at UVic’s Theatre Department, and is a founding member of Blue Bridge, yet this is the first play she has directed for the eight-year-old company. The plot centres on two bachelor friends who have invented alter egos to evade some of the stifling social demands placed on them. “I’m attracted to the idea that Algernon and Jack are in some sense playing a role to function in society,” says Gebhard. “And when the facts of the real world collide with the fiction of their invented characters, humour abounds.” Gebhard will be updating this wickedly funny farce to the 1920s, and is especially pleased that the formidable Lady Bracknell will be played by Shaw Festival veteran Laurie Paton. “Bracknell is just a minor role but she has some of the play’s best lines,” Gebhard adds. “She is deservedly one of the most famous characters in comedy.”

four of his nine staff members in the past 30 days. “I worked in advertising and marketing for over a decade before I started Leap,” Tran says. “I noticed a huge shift in design and marketing about four years ago. Digital communication was on the rise and new technologies would become a game changer. So I saw an opportunity to create a business to provide services to companies that wanted to thrive in this space.” Tran, a trim, affable and articulate 42-year-old, exudes a kind of calm energy. In addition to heading up Leap, he’s a talented artist, who has managed to harness his creativity into a day job as well as his most passionate pastime. “What I do on a day-to-day basis at work is often very creative … but because of the nature of work, we are confined by design specification requirements, boundaries and rules and standards,” he says. “What I do on my own time with my art is more of a spiritual journey … I would say I go here because it’s one of the only ways that I can get unplugged and get lost in the creative. There are no rules here and I can pretty much do as I please.” After a six-month attempt to work solo in a home office, Tran realized he drew energy from bouncing ideas around with others. So he set out to create a studio-office “with a set of core values designed around the modern day lifestyle — flexible hours, low stress and remuneration that’s based on the company’s performance.” He seems to have found a winning formula at Leap, which does about 70 per cent website design and 30 per cent branding and marketing. “I work hard to value the skills people have,” he says, adding that he considers “passion” a crucial characteristic in the people he hires. Born in Saigon, Tran grew up in Sidney and later moved to Victoria. His wife, Ladena Racine, is a French Immersion teacher and they have a nine-year-old daughter and five-year-old son. He loves spending time with his family — often in the great outdoors — but beyond that, art is his “escape and passion.” “It’s something that I’ve been doing my entire life,” he says. “I love that there are so many ways to express yourself using the most basic tools and objects. Really, I do much better communicating visually than with words. I love working on pencil sketches and doodling design ideas with every free moment that I have.” He adds: “Art is all I know. When I’m sitting here, I see lines, light and shadows. From as young as I can remember I wanted art as a career.” Tran is currently working on 10 paintings which he hopes to show at a small exhibit in 2018. “The paintings depict mostly local landmarks that are interesting to me, and showcase some of Victoria’s original architecture and places that make Victoria special.”

“I GO HERE BECAUSE IT’S ONE OF THE ONLY WAYS THAT I CAN GET UNPLUGGED AND GET LOST IN THE CREATIVE.”

Neil Tran in front of his studio/office “inspiration wall.”

His art is vibrant and colourful, but even more exciting is his current project, which is breathtaking in its complexity. Using a black and white sketch of a beautifully lined, 70-year-old man’s face, Tran is transporting the image to a three-by-three-foot canvas, using 3,750 cabinet screw heads, all placed at different depths to define the details. Eventually, he will paint every single screw head with three layers of primer followed by an acrylic finish. “It will be one of a kind,” he says, adding, “When I’m in artist mode, I don’t think of anything else. I have a switch and when I turn into Neil Tran the artist, I’m a whole different person.” Tran and I wander over to nearby Habit Coffee, where he orders a double Americano and I get a glass of water. “Drinking coffee this late in the day doesn’t keep you up all night?” I ask. As it turns out, Tran doesn’t sleep much, averaging about four hours a night, followed by an eight-hour crash every few weeks. It’s an important fact when one considers all he accomplishes in a day. Often he’s up designing at 3 a.m. after sleeping just a few hours. “It’s my golden time,” he says, noting that clients often ask if theirs is a “3 a.m. project.” He usually goes back to sleep for a bit, but gets up in time to hit the gym at 5 a.m. And for at least half the year, he cycles to work. What Tran doesn’t talk about immediately is the fact he lives and works with constant pain after breaking his neck in a snowboarding accident 15 years ago. The injury was mistreated and he has spent years dealing with the painful outfall. After a final MRI this summer, he will make a decision about surgery, but in the meantime, he says, life has taught him to not take his health for granted. “Life has also taught me to be humble, and to be grateful for people who make time for me. After all, isn’t life all about engaging in meaningful relationships and enjoying all the little moments?” Back at the Leap office, Tran’s staff is relaxed and pleasant: some are meeting in comfortablelooking chairs in one corner; others are working at their computers. And rising above all the activity, that bright “inspiration wall” pops with visually strong, artwork. For Tran, the impact of art here can’t be understated. “Everything that we create at Leap is designed with a purpose and heavily influenced by modern day and classical art,” he says. “My art definitely plays a huge part in what I do in my professional life. Art has been a way to communicate beliefs and express ideas about the human experience throughout all stages of civilization and in every region of the world … Art is my life.” 129

Redesigned 2016 RX350 top the list of favouRites As a member of the Jim Pattison Lexus sales team for more than a year now, Quinten MacLennan has driven dozens of models, but it’s the brand new 2016 RX350 with the luxury package that’s currently topping his list as number one Lexus selection. Redesigned for 2016, the newest features include increased horsepower, an automatic 8-speed transmission, 20-inch alloy wheels for a smoother and quieter ride, and a slightly longer body, giving more room to passengers in the back seat. It’s the fourth generation of the RX since its introduction in 1999 when it was launched as the first ever luxury crossover SUV on the market. And it has proven to be incredibly popular with drivers. “It’s just the comfort, the fit and finish, and how everything works so well together,” says MacLennan.

“The elegance, the attention to detail. When you’re driving it, it’s so quiet and smooth.” And with all the safety features of previous generations contributing to an unmatched reliability, the RX350 is practically irresistible. “It’s got the navigation, blind spot monitors, pretty much all the safety features you’re looking at these days.” Growing up around cars and his father’s motorbike shop, MacLennan learned a few things about what makes a good vehicle, and Lexus has always proven it has top quality vehicles, and customer service to match. “We treat everyone like they’re guests in our home, and try to go above and beyond,” says MacLennan, who previously worked for the Fairmont Hotels for eight years. “I wouldn’t work here if it wasn’t a Lexus dealership.”
