Bountagu Big Local is a resident-led project to improve our neighbourhood, supported by the National Lottery Community Fund through Local Trust. We’ve got big news on page 8, as we launch Bountagu’s Little Ideas Fund; a new way for ANY of us make a local difference. If you’ve ever had an idea to do something great in our area, the fund is here to help make that happen! Maybe you want to turn a street corner into a garden or a cycle-repair hub, start an over-40s football team or a live music night, organise a play street or outdoor cinema, run a first aid course for new parents, a minibus outing or a regular litter-pick… The fund is to help get little ideas off the ground, so let’s see what schemes our creative and passionate neighbours (YOU!) can come up with! Join us at an Open Evening (p9), or one of Unltd’s N9 Roadshow dates (back cover), to explore your community business idea or your plan for the Little Ideas Fund. 2

We’ve also got updates from local groups and activities (p10,11,14), including the reopening of 229 Bounces Road as a community hub called Social Sphere; there are photos from the area’s first Play Street, a local crafting day, and our day trip to Colchester Zoo (p6,7). And you can meet our new staff team (p3)! Read about our over 50s group as they explore some of the borough’s offerings (p4,5), and about the launch of their lunch club (Wed 04 December) and new afternoon choir (from Wed 11 December) - timed for the school run! Meet our new staff Bountagu has recruited two part-time workers to help deliver its plan to 2021. I’m really excited to be joining Bountagu and look forward to supporting Partnership over the next 2 years. I live locally so the community is familiar to me, but have lots more to learn about the wonderful people, projects and places that make up Bountagu. I will be introducing myself to the community through existing local groups and services - many of whom are already connected to Bountagu - but I’m particularly interested in finding out about local groups or individuals who have yet to connect with the project. So, if you know anyone who would like to know more about Bountagu please do suggest they contact me! I’m hoping I can meet lots of you through our Open Evenings initially and hope to see some of you at the next one on December 3rd. I’ve been volunteering with Bountagu since 2016, managing the former Job Club and Business Network projects, and this year have been helping set up our new office and facilities, getting this magazine and social media off the ground, and supporting Partnership. This summer I spent 3 months as Interim General Manager, while Bountagu set the plan in motion and began recruiting permanent staff. This job opportunity to help build Bountagu’s capability, and deliver ideas that will improve the area where my family and I live, and where I have spent most of my life, was just too exciting to let pass! I’m really looking forward to working with Sylvie and with Bountagu’s Partnership and key volunteers to help our neighbourhood take positive steps forward. George Georgiou (Office Manager)

Focus on: bountagu over 50s Out and About Our over 50s group have been out and about, trying out what is available around the borough. Pickets Lock Athletics In September a few of us attended a taster day run by Age UK, at Lee Valley Athletics Centre. As I am not athletic, I had never entered the building before but was very surprised with what it had to offer. There is a Gym and a very good cafe, and it has a lovely outlook on to the running track. It was a nice atmosphere, very spacious and relaxing, and the staff there were lovely. During our time there we tried Line Dancing, Tai Chi and Chair Exercises. We would definitely go there focused on getting people moving and again even if it’s just for a coffee. we took part in Walking Netball. None of us had played netball since leaving Southbury Rd Leisure school (many years ago) but the coaches In October we went to a taster day run by were very friendly and after a bit of Enfield Over 50’s Forum, at Southbury practice we were well on our way, the Leisure Centre. The whole day was only hard thing was not to run.
our Priorities: Older People Bountagu currently supports older people who are isolated and engages them in community activities and events. Bountagu will build on the successful programmes already being run, some of which are to be developed further. For others, sustainability is now the key focus. We also joined the Walking Football and although we were clueless about the rules (and often walking about like headless chickens), the gents were very kind to us, explaining, and not getting too frustrated! We followed up our fun day with a wellearned lunch at Morrisons.
The performance was very professional, and we had a great evening of mixed, excellently sang songs. We came away extremely uplifted, with the tunes still going around in our heads all the way home on the bus.
St Peter’s Church Quiz And finally for this month we will be making up a team for the St Peter’s Church Quiz evening (even though you couldn’t quite call us the Brains of Britain) This will be our third attempt. 1st time we came last, 2nd time was a slight improvement and who knows what could happen this time? The thing is at all these events we are us having fun, this is what our over 50’s group is all about, not feeling alone, not going out because you have nobody to go with, improving your well-being and making new friends. Please come and join us and become part of our group. See you soon. Colleen and Rose. St Andrews Choir Also during October, a group of us went to St Andrews Church for a Choir Recital in aid of the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice. We were interested in seeing the Choir, as we hope to start a community choir in the Bountagu area.

Focus On: Trips & Activities Play Streets Edmonton Parents Get Together hosted their first local Play Street in September, closing part of Exeter Rd for a few hours, as part of London Car Free Day. Children brought things to play with and share, adults brought flasks of tea and an open mind. Space hoppers hopped, swingballs swung, bikes cycled (and were fixed - thanks Doctor Bike!), go-karts were built and raced. And everyone demonstrated their defiant spirit by ignoring the rain and having a great time anyway! The group are planning a ‘Host Your Own Play Street’ workshop in time for Enfield Council’s April deadline, to cover the application form process, getting neighbours on board, marshalling and sourcing suitable play equipment.

Colchester Zoo Day Trip Our half-term coach trip to Colchester Zoo was a really fabulous day. Sorry if you couldn’t get a place, but it was incredibly popular and sold out really fast. Huge thanks to everyone who joined us, who looked out for each other on the day, and of course to our wonderful Bountagu volunteers for organising our first coach trip in a while.
Halloween Crafts Day Zoe at Zinfinity ran a ‘spooktacular’ family creative workshop in late October, decorating Halloween bats and spooky houses. Over a dozen local kids (and adults) went home covered in glitter!

Get involved: Funding for your ideas The Little Ideas Fund 2020 Bountagu are hugely excited to launch our Little Ideas Fund to help strengthen our community. We want to inspire and empower local people to improve life for their neighbours. What Is It?
What Is The Bountagu Area?
We are providing grants up to £250 for projects that help improve the lives of residents in our area. You can apply for funding to run a small local project, event or activity.
The Bountagu area includes almost 2100 households on 38 streets in Lower Edmonton. The map on page 15 should make it clearer, or you can visit www.bountagu.com/map.
What Are The Rules?
What If My Great Idea Doesn’t Fit?
We’re trying not to be too restrictive initially, because we want your ideas! 1. You should be a Bountagu resident OR your project should mainly benefit Bountagu residents. 2. Your idea needs to match at least one of our four priority areas: • Children and Young People • Older People 50+ • Environment (Outdoor Spaces and Community Safety) • Developing Opportunities for Local People (Business, Jobs and Skills)
If you aren’t sure whether your idea meets our priorities or geographical rules, want to apply as a group or organisation, or need more than £250 to make your idea a reality, contact us anyway! There are other avenues for local support - both through Bountagu and other organisations - and there may be another way we can help.

Focus On Local: Groups & Events Social Sphere: New Community Hub Open Social Sphere is now open at 229 Bounces Road, supporting the community by offering training, small business advice, employment and support services, coffee mornings, craft workshops, and is also a CHiPs Community Help Points location.
Regular Activities: Coffee mornings are running on Mondays and Tuesdays. Job Club runs every two weeks. Training courses include: Introduction to IT, ESOL & Everyday English, Employability for Sewing, and more. Hub for Business Advice and Support (UnLtd).

Macmillan Coffee Morning We want to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone involved in helping us, and all those that attended our coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer Support on 27 September. We couldn’t have done it without you. We received lots of lovely cakes, which we enjoyed munching our way through, whilst chatting, having a laugh and making friends. It was good to see many new faces, and hope to see them again soon. Your generosity raised £214 which was even more than last year, so once again thank you all, and we will be pleased to see you anytime at our regular Friday event.

CAPE Lower Edmonton Our local CAPE (Community Action Partnership in Enfield) meets every two months, reporting incidents and offences to the police and the council that have been logged by residents and local neighbourhood groups. Also, the police provide latest crime reports, advice and info on how to stay safe,

Edmonton Parents Get Together (EPGT) EPGT is a growing Facebook group run by three local mums, focused on local parenting ideas, activities and all things family-friendly in N9/N18. They share stories, events and tips, and create chances to meet new friends and enjoy local spaces. They’re passionate about Edmonton and know you don’t need to cross the borough to find plenty to be proud of! Anyone with parental or fostering responsibility is welcome, who wants to be part of a positive difference in the area theyíre raising their children.

Edmonton Eagles ABC Edmonton Eagles Amateur Boxing Club runs from Montagu Rd Clubhouse, providing low-cost sessions six days a week for all abilities, including mixed junior and senior fitness classes, ladiesonly, and free after-school sessions. Bounces Rd NHW Bounces Road Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) Scheme is organised by concerned residents to reduce crime in the local community.
