MPs and councillors with local school children
Pier Approach improvements showcased The Big Wheel is back at Pier Approach and residents and visitors have been making the most of the improved surroundings. Granite paving has been installed with new street furniture and semi-submerged bins. Raised planting and the materials used, link in with earlier landscaping on the eastern side of Pier Approach. Coastal Communities Minister, Jake Berry MP recently visited to see the major transformation; made possible as part of a
grant of £5.6 million from government’s Coastal Communities Fund for the Dorset Coastal Connections portfolio, co-ordinated by Dorset Coast Forum. The portfolio comprises 18 projects to support and boost the economies of Dorset’s coastal areas, including £1.9 million for the Pier Approach project, match-funded and led by Bournemouth Council. Councillor John Beesley, Leader of the Council, said: “Thanks to government funding, our world class seafront continues to be a top destination for a huge number of visitors all year round.” W: bournemouth.gov.uk/pierapproach
Homes for rent at Berry Court Prospective tenants have been registering their interest in homes at Berry Court, a £27 million high-quality housing development on St Peter’s Road in the town centre. Built in partnership by housing provider Radian and The Bournemouth Development Company, the 113 properties feature one, two and three bedroom apartments, including penthouses and duplexes.
“Berry Court is playing an important role in our Town Centre Vision by bringing forward much needed homes for rent in the centre of the town.” The apartments are all exclusively available to rent through Radian’s private lettings service SMART, offering flexible tenancies

Slades Farm new building Our parks team is working with Active Dorset to bring improved facilities to Slades Farm. A replacement building for the old pavilion will open in the autumn. The new building will provide a community space, public toilets and café facility. Tackling enviro crime Not picking up your dog’s waste or dropping litter risks an £80 fine. Did you know that dropping a cigarette end, spitting and repairing or selling a vehicle on the road are also offences? One of the ways we’re tackling these nuisance problems is by working with a private enforcement company who issue fines to those they witness committing an offence. These fines are known as ‘fixed penalty notices’ or FPNs for short. In the last year 1,660 FPNs have been issued, including 1,607 just for littering. Councillor David Smith, Cabinet Member for Planning and Environment, said: “If people took more care when disposing of their litter then this penalty would not be necessary. Bournemouth prides itself on its clean and green environment and we are really disappointed that a small minority continue to drop litter.”

Bournemouth’s new Mayor Councillor Derek Borthwick became the Mayor of Bournemouth earlier this year. Derek has been a councillor since 2007 serving the residents of Throop and Muscliff. He was born in Chiswick but was evacuated to Bournemouth during the war when he lived with his grandmother and attended school at Hill View and Moordown St John’s. Derek is married to Dorothy and the couple retired to Bournemouth in 1999. The Mayor celebrates our achievements, attends civic and
community events, and raises funds for charity. This year, the Mayor’s Charity Appeal Fund will be supporting Bournemouth Leukaemia Fund. Councillor Borthwick said: “I’m very honoured and privileged to be representing the town as the Mayor this year. Historic day for local government in Dorset Legislation has now been passed in both Houses of Parliament meaning that Dorset residents will be served by two brand new unitary councils from April 2019 - Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, and Dorset Council. The county’s nine current councils will cease to exist on 31 March 2019. Each of the new councils (see area map above) will serve around 400,000 residents, putting them within the 20 largest local authorities in the country. Councillor John Beesley, Leader of Bournemouth Council, said: “These two new councils will have a stronger, co-ordinated voice when bidding for government funding and investment, and residents will benefit from having councils with less overheads that are better able to protect local services in the future.” Now that the parliamentary process is complete, the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Joint Committee has been replaced by the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Shadow Authority. The Shadow Authority is made up of 125 seats, filled by all existing 120 councillors from the current councils (and five councillors who are both Borough and County Councillors for Christchurch). The first meeting took place in June at Bournemouth University and the Shadow Authority appointed Jane Portman to the interim statutory ‘head of paid service’ role.
A permanent Chief Executive for the new Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council will be recruited later this year. Councillors have now been appointed to relevant committees including the Shadow Executive Committee, which is similar to ‘Cabinet’ and oversees the plans for the new council. Bournemouth Council continues to deliver all your local council services between now and March 2019. Our primary focus is to make sure there’s a smooth transfer of services to the new Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council.

Roads and travel
Autumn works scheduled: A338 between Blackwater Junction and Cooper Dean roundabout Works to improve journey times and reduce delays for those travelling on the A338 will soon be underway. As part of the Bournemouth International Growth programme, major works are programmed to start in the autumn to widen the A338 and create extra lane capacity between Blackwater Junction and Cooper Dean roundabout. The improvements are likely to take around ten months to complete and will include: • creating an extra southbound lane on the section of the A338 between Blackwater Junction and Cooper Dean roundabout • improvements to the ‘on slip’ onto the A338 Southbound from the B3073 at Blackwater East Junction. During the works the speed limit on this stretch of the A338 between Blackwater Junction and Cooper Dean Roundabout will be reduced to 40mph. Traffic will also be reduced to one lane on the southbound A338 and lane restrictions are also likely to be implemented on the A338 northbound to enable safe working in the central reserve.
Motorists are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys or take alternative routes whilst the works are taking place. Sign up to the blog at A338.info to receive regular updates. Earlier this year works finished at Blackwater East Junction, which has created extra capacity at this junction. Blackwater West Junction will also be improved once the works on the A338 are substantially completed. The full benefit of these improvements will not be felt until the West Junction is also completed in spring 2020.

Foster carers come from all walks of life
Could you be a foster carer like Dave and Pat? Dave and Pat “Being foster carers started for us when our own four children had left home and we realised there was a gap in our lives. We’d had a few years on our own, taken some good holidays, then I suppose the empty nest syndrome set in.
Dave and Pat have opened up their home and their hearts, for 27 babies and children over the last six years. It’s a journey that has made a massive impact on them as well as those they’ve cared for. Dave tells us his story.
“
So far, 27 children have come into our lives - and we can’t wait for the next one to come through our front door!
“We both thought it was the right time for us and this came from a combination of factors. We felt we’d been okay parents… why couldn’t we do the same for other children too? We wanted to give something back and we had something to offer. I only had experience of my own children but Pat had always worked in nurseries and with young children, and she said she’d like to look into it.
“We applied, completed the assessment and that was six years ago. Some of the children have stayed for just a couple of days as an emergency placement while others have been with us for much longer.
“So far, 27 children have come into our lives - and we can’t wait for the next one to come through our front door!”
In Bournemouth, there is a need for 25 more local carers for children. Councillor Nicola Greene, Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, said: “Great carers come from all walks of life. Age, gender, ethnic background, what sort of house you live in, whether or not you are married, single or in a relationship, and how much you earn. None of these are barriers. The ideal foster carer is someone who can provide a child with a stable, supportive home for as long as it is needed.”

Have you signed up for garden waste collections? So far, over 18,500 of you have joined the 2018 garden waste scheme. Last year’s scheme resulted in 5,000 tonnes of garden waste being collected and composted.
It will take a few weeks to deliver your calendar, sticker and bins (if needed) before your collections start. There are other ways you can recycle your garden waste for free, by taking it to Millhams Community Recycling Centre of Christchurch Household Recycling Centre. Gardeners may also want to know that we’ve teamed up with getcomposting.com to provide you with great value home compost bins and offers such as ‘buy one get one half price’. You can also find other environmental products like water butts and more.
If you haven’t signed up yet, there’s still time to make the most of the scheme. Fortnightly collections run until 14 December and the fee is £43 (or a £60 collection fee for two bins).

The quality of our natural environment is one of the reasons we love living here and we all want it to remain in tip top condition. On a hot busy beach day, some 100,000 visitors generate serious amounts of rubbish. We spend nearly £1 million keeping the 10 miles of Bournemouth and Poole’s beaches clean, including recycling and disposing of seafront waste. Our cleaning team includes six full time staff and 15 seasonal workers. They litter pick the beach, use three beach tractors, assorted tractor kit, plus surf rakes.
• New for this year are 200 additional bins, some underground as part of improvements to Pier Approach (see page 4). • Zero seafront waste goes to landfill - it’s all processed, recycled or turned into energy. • Beaches in Bournemouth and Poole boast a combined total of 18 Keep Britain Tidy accolades. Our eight Blue Flag beaches join Boscombe Pier and Bournemouth Pier in achieving Seaside Awards.
Visit the seafront and grab a selfie This summer, the seafront has been transformed into a work of art. Thanks to local gallery, Ambassadeur Art, a variety of artists have created a series of murals that make fun and colourful backdrops for your pictures. The Selfie Wall Trail stretches from Sandbanks all the way to Southbourne meaning wherever you are on the seafront, the perfect selfie opportunity isn’t far away. Councillor Robert Lawton, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Rough sleeping is a complex issue. There are many reasons why people find themselves in this situation. For some people, rough sleeping is not just a housing problem as it is linked with traumatic life experiences and complex needs. Our approach recognises these contributing factors.” We work together with social services, drug and alcohol treatment, healthcare teams and many others to ensure that those who are rough sleeping receive the support they need. Services include the St Mungo’s rough sleeper team and approximately 150 supported hostel bed spaces for people who have slept rough. We recognise that it is not unusual for some

Night Air displays will feature the Twisters and Fireflies alongside Otto the Helicopter, a Tigers Parachute jump and Breitling Jet Team dusk display.
We will be welcoming the fantastic Breitling Jet Team - they have not displayed at a UK civilian air show for nearly 15 years. Their fast and powerful Czech Aero L-39 Albatros jets are piloted by incredible flying aces. The pilots need precision, speed and daring skill - at times the aircraft are within three metres of each other at speeds of over 700km/h.

We wouldn’t be able to achieve the festival’s fantastic display programme without the continued support of our sponsors and patrons. The end of WWI will also play a key part in the Air Festival. Saturday and Sunday celebrates a Very Vintage Weekend with live music, cars and vintage traders on the East Overcliff. The main feature will be a stunning heritage aircraft flypast and what is planned to be a poignant poppy drop.

Otto the Helicopter is fitted with the most pyrotechnics any aircraft has ever had. From his door-less cockpit, Brendan the pilot will fire in excess of 2,000 shots of pyrotechnics during his display. Pitts Muscle Plane pilot Rich Goodwin is an RAF Tornado GR1 pilot and learnt to fly before he could drive. Pete Wells, lead pilot of the Twister Duo, was the first pilot to do a dusk pyro display in a plane in the UK… and that was at the 2010 Bournemouth Air Festival. He said,

Local Energy Advice Programme helps 1,000th resident Eligible residents are receiving advice and free gadgets to help them cut their home energy bills thanks to our Local Energy Advice Programme (LEAP). And now the scheme has reached the milestone of helping over 1,000 households to save a total of £800,000 on energy bills and by increasing residents’ benefits. Free gadgets include, smart extension leads, reflective radiator panels, low energy LED lightbulbs - and more if the home is suitable. The programme’s 1,000th Bournemouth customer, Mrs Chaffey from Kinson, said: “I am very happy with LEAP as we now have a warmer home and are saving money. Best of all it was free!”

Redhill Park paddling pool is open for the summer
All the fun of the park School’s nearly out for summer. If the prospect of finding free and low cost activities to keep the little ones entertained fills you with dread, don’t worry. Your local park or green space offers all this and so much more. Take Redhill for example, this perfect family location has a popular play area with swings, climbing equipment and a great basket swing. But that’s not all, there’s a large paddling pool, tennis courts, the wide-open space of the common and a multi-use games area. New for this year is the Fox Café located in the Redhill Park Pavilion (pictured
below). Come to the Café to see a vintage look and feel taking shape inside, or consider hiring the venue for birthday parties or other family celebrations. The reasonably priced menu offers breakfasts, paninis, pies and quiches. Hot drinks, cakes and scones. And of course, ice creams! Foxy fresh strawberry lolly recipe Park Cafés’ head chef, Darren Roser, brings you a delightfully simple and refreshing summer lolly recipe idea that can be made at home. Ingredients • 250g ripe strawberries • 100ml natural yoghurt (or apple or orange juice) • 1 teaspoon of honey (add to taste) Method Blitz the strawberries, yoghurt and honey in a blender or food processor. Taste and add more honey if you need to. Divide the mixture between four ice lolly moulds, then pop a stick into each one. Put the lollies in the freezer for at least four hours or until solid.

This is why in September 2017, the two chief constables announced plans to consider how the alliance could grow and merge forces.
