Readers letters Hello Charity News! I know that it is the Royal Bournemouth Hospital’s 30th birthday this year and I want to do a cool fundraising event to help raise money! I had a thought that I could put on something 80’s themed, as the hospital opened in that decade. Do you think that this would be a good idea? From your biggest supporter, Lisa Hi there Lisa! That sounds like a great idea! How about digging out your old roller skates and doing a sponsored roller disco? You could also do an 80’s themed party or film night at your house! If you’re feeling particularly energetic, why not do an aerobics party complete with leg warmers and neon lycra! There are plenty of cool things you could do with an 80’s theme and if you want to run any more of them by us, call us on 01202 704060! Good luck!

What could you do to support the 150,000 men we help care for every year at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital?

On Sunday 24 March 2019, you’re invited to join the hundreds of us who gather every year on the Bournemouth Pier Approach to walk, jog or run either 1km, 5km or 10km in solidarity with men of all ages facing a variety of men’s health concerns. Thousands of men from every part of our community are facing men’s health concerns such as prostate or testicular cancers. That’s why, every year, we hold March for Men an event to raise awareness and funds for the Royal Bournemouth Hospital Urology department.

March for men

No matter your age, ability or gender – you can be a part of this amazing event. With your support, we can continue to make men’s health treatment better for every man in our community. We really hope you can join us for this year’s March for Men!

You can sign up for this year’s March for Men on our website, or by calling our Charity Office on 01202 704060.

T h r e e mo u n ta i n s in one day Brian maidment gives his account The Welsh Three Peaks was the most challenging physical experience I have ever undertaken. The challenge totalled 18 hours from start to finish, including the travel between the different peaks. Our journey began at 5.30am at Pen y Fan where we experienced a relatively cool early morning sun both up and down the peak. This leg of our journey took only two-and-a-half hours! We were then driven for three hours to Cadair Idris for a five hour climb and descent on a relentless up hill and down dale of boulders and steps in soaring temperatures of the mid-day sun. We then drove for another oneand-a-half hours to our final peak,

Snowdon! We began our trek at 5.00pm at the base, ready for the three and a half hour climb to the summit.

Half an hour from the summit of Snowdon, I hit “the wall. Totally drained of all resources physically and mentally to carry on, our mountain leader, Jethro, called for a rest break and the whole

team rallied round with drinks, sweets, glucose tablets, bananas and very kind and encouraging words of support to get me to the top. Twenty minutes later, we were on our way again, with me leading the pack so as to set the pace - albeit a slow pace - and sure enough, half an a hour later, we were on top of the world celebrating the most amazing moment of accomplishment. We were a small team of six participants plus our mountain leader all of whom had never met until the day before, but without them, I couldn’t have done it and I will never forget them for that. Our final descent - which took a total of three hours, with some

of it requiring us to use torches to guide our way - was full of reflection on the day, with good stories from the day, a rendition of “Cockles & Muscles” followed by “Men Of Harlech”. I’d like to offer big thanks to Karen from Bournemouth Hospital Charity for arranging every detail of the event and for always being on-hand with refreshments, food and encouraging words of support

and acknowledgement. Huge thanks are also owed to Mark our driver, who donated his own time to get us there and back safely, along with Malcolm to ferry

supplies and stow and porter kit whenever it was needed Ciaran, Jethro, Louise, Lucy, Lia and Abi made up the most tremendous team that I have had the privilege to meet. The completion of the Welsh Three Peaks with these people was a true milestone in my life.

Challenges

LIGHT UP THE PROM The Bournemouth Hospital Charity Team were so happy to see over 1,000 supporters show up to dedicate a light in memory of a loved one at Light Up the Prom. We are thrilled that this joint event with Macmillan Caring locally raised over £10,500. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our wonderful volunteers, the team from Macmillan Caring Locally and our sponsor HG Walker Solicitors - without their help, this event would not have been able to take place.

We have a whole host of amazing challenges that you could take on this new year in aid of Bournemouth Hospital Charity, choosing the ward or department that is close to your heart. Take to the skies in the form of a wing walk or skydive, cycle from London to Amsterdam, hike the beautiful Jurassic Coast or go further afield and trek the Great Wall of China! There are plenty of other exciting options for you to choose from, so if you want to have a once in a lifetime experience and fundraise at the same time, pop in to the Charity Office for a chat or to pick up a Challenges pack!

PRIORY CONCERT We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who came to Christchurch Priory to take part in the Nine Lessons and Carols Christmas Service. Over £2,000 was generously donated by those who attended this special event.

Easy fundraising Fundraising for Bournemouth Hospital Charity doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to jump out of a plane or travel across the world to trek to the highest peaks. Throughout the year, Bournemouth Hospital Charity runs three different raffles, with tickets selling for just £1 each. For more information on our raffles, or to find out how else you can fundraise for us, call the Charity Office on 01202 704060 or pop in for a chat!

TREKING THE

ROCKY MOUNTAINS

Jan Maddocks completed a 50mile trek over a period of six days through the wild terrain in the Canadian Rockies, in memory of her husband Bob, who passed away last year after battling heart problems for many years.

Bob Maddocks served 26 years in the Royal Green Jackets and visited Canada and the Rocky Mountains many times. He had planned to take Jan there one day, but unfortunately they weren’t able to do so. When Jan decided that she wanted to do something amazing to remember him, the ‘Trek the Rocky Mountains’ challenge seemed like the perfect choice. “The Trek was very emotional for me, being in a place that Bob loved so much and one that we had hoped to go to together one day.” Jan chose Bournemouth Hospital Charity to benefit from her fundraising efforts, as the Royal Bournemouth Hospital had cared for Bob over 11 years through all of his treatments, specifically the Cardiac department. “The care and support that he received was second to none. Over the years, the amazing team became our friends and absolutely nothing was too much trouble. They gave him 11 more years of great quality of life for which my family and I are immensely grateful.” Jan raised an incredible £1,422 in sponsorship and would like to thank Dr Radvan, Dr Sopher, Dr Talwar and all their teams for all they did for Bob while he was a patient in the Dorset Heart Centre.

Thank you to Jimmy’s Iced Coffee In early December, the lovely team at Jimmy’s Iced Coffee donated a fridge filled with iced coffee for our wonderful Emergency Department.

Suzie Cregan, the Co-Founder of Jimmy’s Iced Coffee has this to say, “We have all had to attend Bournemouth A&E over the years and we recognise how hard they work and what an incredible job they do, so we wanted to be able to give the team something to say thank you.”

Royal Bournemouth Hospital Staff

We would like to say a big thank you to the groups and individuals who support us. Here are just a few examples...

Friendly Fundraisers - Anne Ayles & Pam Masters Anne Ayles and Pam Masters have donated a total of £7,925 to purchase a special trolley for the storage of breast implants in theatres, a laptop trolley for the Haematology Oncology Day Unit and have pledged support of the alternative therapy sessions all for cancer care.

Pat Tryhorn - Reggae 10km Jamaica

Throughout the Christmas period, staff, patients and visitors were able to enjoy some wonderful festive music organised by our Community Fundraiser Sara. We’d like to thank all of the brilliant musical acts who gave their time and musical talent to help bring some festive cheer into the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and for raising money in the process!

Pat Tryhorn took part in The Reggae 10K in the Jamaican resort of Negril in aid of the Day Surgery Unit, who has cared for her husband over the years. Pat said: "This unit has shown so much compassion, respect and dignity in the way they care for their patients. With your help I am giving something back to the team that are taking such good care of my darling husband, David." Pat has raised nearly 50 per cent of her target and you can help her to reach it by donating through www.justgiving.com/Pat-Tryhorn.
