Think of the people close to you who have been shining lights in your life. Through their love, friendship or compassion, those extraordinary people leave a mark on you that can never be forgotten. That’s why, every year, Bournemouth Hospital Charity – alongside Macmillan Caring Locally – proudly host Light Up the Prom. You and your family and friends can take part by purchasing a light in memory of a loved one and dedicating their name into our Book of Light. Then, on 9 November, join hundreds of people in your community on the Bournemouth Pier Approach to celebrate Light Up the Prom – Bournemouth’s biggest memorial event.
A night of lights, music and remembrance begins at with two minutes of silent reflection as hundreds of lights illuminate the prom, followed by a dazzling fireworks display. This year, the Bournemouth Male Voice Choir will also provide musical entertainment. This year’s Light Up the Prom is proudly sponsored by Harold G Walker Solicitors – your friend-inlaw whose specialist team offer a wide range of legal services and advice from their offices in Broadstone, Christchurch, Verwood and Wimborne. Proceeds from Light Up the Prom will support both Bournemouth Hospital Charity and Macmillan Caring Locally, who support the Macmillan Unit at Christchurch Hospital.

Sea Birds complete Channel swim
At the beginning of September, Helen Wright and Ruth Williamson took on the English Channel in an incredible feat of athleticism to raise funds for Bournemouth Hospital Charity. Along with other women raising money for charity, the brave women, also known as the ‘Sea Birds’ completed a swimming relay challenge that took them 16 hours 45 minutes in total – they even had to battle sea sickness along the way! We’d like to say a big thank you to these ladies for their donation to the Charity and for their amazing accomplishment!

PetalGarden We have recently seen the completion of the hospital’s new dementia petal garden. This transformation has seen of one of our courtyard areas blossom into a space designed for patients with dementia to enjoy.
Liverpool Victoria made one of the largest donations to the petal garden. Jonathan Sells sculpted a wooden sculpture resembling the company’s heart logo, which sits in one corner of the garden. Janine Pattison Studios created the garden designs with the dementia patients in mind. Through their research and work, the garden will be a positive place for patients.

Welsh Three Peaks 2019
Following the success of this year’s event, Bournemouth Hospital Charity invites you to take on the Welsh Three Peaks challenge!
On 30 August, our brave fundraiser Paul Jenkins took to the local waters to kayak from Swanage to Keyhaven via the The Needles to raise money for Ward 16 and awareness of bowel cancer.
In this epic trek, you can take on the great mountains of Pen y Fan, Cadair Idris and Snowdon – all on the same day. These three peaks will certainly test your trekking endurance, but you’ll also be rewarded with stunning views of the spectacular Welsh countryside.
Paul was accompanied by two fellow kayakers, Dave Rodger and Victor Copeland, a British Canoeing five-star sea kayak leader and has raised over £1,390 of his £5,000 target so far.
Taking place over 28-30 June 2019, this challenge will be a fantastic goal to set yourself in the new year. The registration fee is £100 and participants will have a fundraising target of £900, which participants will have plenty of time to raise!
To donate to Paul’s cause and help him reach his target, visit his JustGiving page by searching ‘rbhward16’ on JustGiving.com.
