The Amsterdam Academy of Architecture: an international laboratory For the students and tutors of the Academy of Architecture, Amsterdam is a permanent laboratory for their design projects. The Academy maintains strong ties with the professional community in the region, with public services, clients and project developers. Our training programmes are internationally renowned. The Academy has close connections with similar education programmes in Europe, and strives to expand and strengthen its international collaborations. We attract students from all over the world, are regularly visited by international guest lecturers and speakers, and our students are frequent participants in international excursions and projects.
Integrated professional practice At the Academy, architecture, urbanism and landscape architecture are independent disciplines. However, we offer training that partially combines all three areas. This prepares students for today’s integrated professional practice that requires students to possess both specialist, and more broadly-based, skills. The interface with visual arts training emphasises the particular importance that we place on the artistic aspect of professional life. For designers by designers The Academy’s concurrent education model, which combines theoretical study and professional experience, means that students and tutors are actively engaged in the practice of design, and in practice-based research. This ensures that students are actively involved in a broad professional network, even during their studies. Broadly speaking, students graduating from the Academy of Architecture, do not actually leave the Academy. In the concurrent education model, the student goes on to become an employer, followed by becoming a tutor or mentor to a new generation of students.
Inspiring environment and topical debate The Academy of Architecture is located in the heart of Amsterdam on Waterlooplein in a remarkable building – a seventeenth-century complex – redeveloped by Claus and Kaan Architects to meet the specific needs of the architecture faculty. The Academy plays an active role in the cultural life of Amsterdam, and participates in the debate on architecture and urbanism. We organise lectures, workshops, events and exhibitions, often in partnership with external parties. 1·Lectures, a series of lectures featuring a current topic, take place throughout the year; they are open to the public, and admission is free for Academy students.

workshops
Artist in Residence In collaboration with the Art Practice and artistic development research group of the AHK, each year an Artist in Residence (AIR) is invited to ‘disrupt’ the faculty – in a positive sense. In the last few years, remarkable and engaging projects and lecture series have been organised, led by distinguished names such as visual artist and filmmaker Gabriel Lester, visual artist Jeroen Kooijmans, visual artist Jeanne van Heeswijk, architect Rianne Makkink and cultural sociologist and future thinker Michiel Schwarz.
general information Practice-led research in education Social, practical and technological developments continually make new demands on designers. In view of this, the Academy’s training programme places great emphasis on practice-led research. The researchers organise master classes, projects, excursions, exhibitions and lectures as part of their research. Research themes of recent years include: Tabula Scripta that focuses on the role, resources and craftsmanship of the architect under the conditions of the so-called ‘tabula scripta’. Foodscapes which delves into current and future modes of food production. And Future Urban Regions, a collaborative project focused on improving the city and the urban environment. Professional title Graduates with a Master’s in architecture are qualified to work independently as architects, and are entitled to register straight away in the Dutch register of architects, urbanists and landscape architects.
9 Selection and admission The Academy assumes that students will have acquired the necessary technical skills during their BA studies. Admission may include a selection procedure. Students who fail to meet the admission requirements can be considered for the preparatory course Architecture or Urbanism and Landscape Architecture, after which they can be accepted for the Master’s. You can find full information about admission and registration on the website www.academyofarchitecture.nl. The Academy also offers a minor in Architecture and a minor in Urbanism and Landscape Architecture so that students on relevant preliminary courses can become familiar with the fundaments during the BA programme. More information For further details about the training programmes, open days, lectures and exhibitions, please visit www.academyofarchitecture.nl. Master in Architecture The Master in Architecture focuses on the future role of the architect as a central figure in the design process. At the Academy of Architecture you will learn to develop your own personal architectural signature. The curriculum concentrates entirely on architectonic thinking and designing. Considerable emphasis is placed on students’ knowledge of oeuvre and developing a clear idea of their position in the design profession. Your unique position within the architecture profession is shaped by input from guest lecturers active in the professional community, our small-scale, student-centred approach, and your dedication and commitment.

‘ Students enter the Academy with a background in either construction or art education. It is precisely this mix that can strengthen the quality of each individual designer of the future.’ Jarrik Ouburg, head Department of Architecture
The architect is a spatial artist who is able to take design assignments beyond pragmatic limitations. An architect designs buildings that unite functionality with aesthetics. In creating a design, the architect balances technical constraints and his or her artistic vision. An architect is both engineer and conceptual thinker. This synergy is what makes architecture inspiring and thought-provoking. The way in which buildings function – as well as their organisation and appearance – changes in response to social, cultural and technological advances. The value of architecture depends on the extent to which an architect can manage and respond to these changes and create buildings that reflect them. These aspects are central to the Master’s programme; students are encouraged to engage with these issues in a constant dialogue with tutors and fellow students. This interaction will help to define and inform your individual style. Research group Architecture The architecture research group headed by government architect Floris Alkemade focuses on the role, resources and craftsmanship of the architect under the conditions of the so-called ‘tabula scripta’, or the ‘marked slate’. Innovation inspired by the conviction that the new will be superior to the old.

Master in Urbanism Urbanism has developed into a discipline that encompasses various roles in the field of spatial planning. One of its primary concerns is the design of public spaces. To some extent, urbanism overlaps with disciplines such as economics, the social sciences, and the study of traffic engineering, environmental science, and the other spatial design disciplines.
‘ The desinger of the future must be able and willing to work in a continuous process of searching for programmatic, spatial, architectural and (re) construction opportunities.’ Arjan Klok, head Department of Urbanism
Urbanism occurs at numerous scales, from street to region. Urbanists create the spatial conditions for project developments or the further development of areas for public use. They also create plans that are intended to establish certain spatial characteristics, such as those required to draw up plans and structures for urban sites. This places urbanists within the preserve of spatial planning, and gives their work a strategic element. The Master in Urbanism concentrates on the design aspect of urban planning. Subsequently, the programme emphasizes familiarity with a wide range of design assignments, and acquiring design skills although the primary concern is to encourage students to develop their own perspective on design and to assume a standpoint in professional debate. Research group Future Urban Regions The FUR research group has formulated six major challenges for the city. Each of these lines of research has been assigned to a researcher at one of the Academies of Architecture. On behalf of the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam, architect and urban planner Marco Broekman will be occupied with the question of how spatial strategies can contribute to the development of vital economic urban regions.

Master in Landscape Architecture Landscape architecture is an extremely creative, intriguing discipline. You are able to sketch new visual manifestations that are the result of alternative use. In addition, you are explicitly aware of the influence of the time factor on the quality of the environment. You know how you can allow the time factor to do its work by creating the right basic conditions, so that a sustainable and vital living environment arises for human, plant and animal. You always work on changing an existing context. That’s very convenient, because you have a broad interest in landscape, soil structure and water systems, in cultural history, nature and the constantly changing society. The professional practice includes assignments that can differ greatly in size and scale. You are trained to design
“ I hope my students will develop cities in which we live with life, that they will design for us all together. It is our mission to help them to design with nature.’ Marieke Timmermans, head Department of Landscape Architecture
end products, such as parks, public space and gardens. And also to play a role in processes in which, in addition to completed designs, being able to conduct design-based research is important, as is the case in area developments and urban transformation. During the Master in Landscape Architecture, you will acquire the knowledge and skills in order to come up with beautiful, sustainable design solutions. Design studios with colleagues, urban planners and architects will help you to prepare for complex assignment situations and to develop the most suitable design approach for you. You will graduate with a Master of Science and the title Landscape Architect. The Academy maintains an active network of European study programmes through which students and teachers are exchanged on a small scale. The Academy is a member of the European Association of Architectural Education (EAAE) and is partner of the Master in Landscape Architecture (EMiLA), which enables you to acquire a Master in European Landscape Architecture. Research group Foodscapes In the Foodscapes research group, under the direction of lecturer Han Wiskerke, the emphasis is placed on three themes: the changing of the urban and rural environment and the way in which those changes influence each other, the social and economic relationships within the urban region and the possibility to develop more sustainable food landscapes (‘foodscapes’) on a regional level through (re)design.

programme
Programme structure The three Master programmes follow the same structure. Projects, practical assignments and lectures are supplemented by morphology, and students actively work on their own portfolios: • Design projects are the backbone of the programme • A rich and intensive range of (interdisciplinary) design assignments and viewpoints • Practical assignments centre on training design skills; other assignments emphasize textual analysis and writing skills • Seminars and lectures • During morphology classes, students translate ideas into creative solutions • During the Winter School, students of all disciplines collaborate on one project.
Students can also take elective courses such as modules on self-management and presentation. Students take part on the above-mentioned 1·Lectures, workshops led by an Artist in Residence or researcher, and excursions and study trips in the Netherlands and abroad. In order to study at the Academy of Architecture, students are required to gain relevant professional experience within the so-called extra-curricular curriculum (for instance by working for one or several design firms for a set number of hours).
‘ I have had a very inspiring time at the Academy, where you can focus on your own fascinations and your own signature as a designer. I still feel connected to the Academy, also by the rich network that you build in an informal way.’ Marijke Bruinsma, alumna Master in Urbanism

Amsterdam School of the Arts Inspiration Studying at the AHK means making a deliberate choice for arts education, a well-considered choice for an artistic life-style, in which inspiration is often linked to intensive training, and in which the students -tomorrow’s artists - receive every possible assistance in converting their personal ambitions into the highest artistic quality that they are capable of achieving. Cooperation The range of courses offered by the AHK provides scope for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary cooperation, as well as for international exchanges. The AHK offers students a broad orientation towards art and culture, and for that reason attaches great importance to the fact that students can find out about developments within the other arts disciplines. Students in the various faculties of the AHK are encouraged to cooperate in (interdisciplinary) projects, either organised by the faculties and courses, or begun on the initiative of the students themselves. The AHK has a General Practical Fund to provide financial support for student projects. www.ahk.nl
