This graduation project was born from my fascination to museum architecture and art; and self-reflection of my own country, history and culture. The location of the project is in my hometown Szczecin, on the island located in the middle of the city, yet not noticed by anyone. Without a public access throughout the years, it became a forgotten land, too precious in my eyes to not giving it a meaning. My project touches on different problems and layers in the city. The aim is to reconnect two river banks through the island; improving its public access; providing new activities in the city; creating a destination for people to reach on the island; encouraging the interest in art and culture. A cultural outreach through my design on the Grodzka island.

CULTURAL OUTREACH ON THE GRODZKA ISLAND STRATEGY AND DESIGN

grodzka contemporary

Grodzka contemporary refers to the whole design strategy applied to the island. My main goal was to introduce more permanent public access to the island from the popular left bank of the river, more permanent occupation on the island, as well as creating room for new activities along the main public path.

One of the main design interventions is an art gallery located on the south end of the island. The building consists of a wide cultural program located in the plinth, as well as a collection of individual gallery rooms each with its specific characteristics. As part of the concept of individual galleries, two artists in residency sheds are located within the allotment gardens allowing the artist creative process to be displayed to the public.

LOCATION

The location of my graduation project is the Grodzka Island at the river Odra in Szczecin Poland. A beautiful, green island situated between The Old Town (representing the past developments) and the Old Harbour (present, opportunities) is a stepping stone to the future. The island covers an area of about 15 ha. The allotments gardens are located on its north end. The gardens area has a private status, therefore the whole area is mot accessible for a general public. The island is accessible for pedestrians and vehicles by a bascule bridge, since 2015 which increases its popularity among the citizens. Since than the southern part was ransformed into a temporary public beach. Along the beach, on the east side of the island is the marina building and piers located. Grodzka Island is a great location for cultural activities, both for locals and tourists. It is visible from one of the main “entrance” to the city - the so-called Castle Route- an elevated 15 meters high bridge offering a spectacular view of the Szczecin’s panorama when entering the city.

___grodzka contemporary___Cultural outreach on the Grodzka island

A pedestrian access to the Island Grodzka leads through Island Łasztownia connected to the Old Town via a bridge. It’s a post-industrial island that is still partly occupied by harbour activities. Łasztownia has become an important subject on the city agenda since 2012 when the area was opened up for a public access. A temporary concert hall/ opera house was built, more artistic and theatrical activities organised, river boulevards restored. The water edge gained a new meaning and it can be expected that it will soon become a popular destination for many citizens and tourists.

Grodzka island is located in the heart of Szczecin, between the Old Town and the Old Harbour. Both have significant importance for the city. The left bank of the river is easily accessible, attracts tourists, cultural activities and city happenings; the right bank, however still less popular, has a huge potential for development and flexibility which the left side is lacking. I propose to connect those two ends through the Grodzka island, creating, therefore, a new unique hotspot in the Szczecin cultural agenda.

INTERESTING LAYER

Szczecin is a city with a fascinating history, located ca 20km from the border crossing between Poland and Germany. Despite the fact that the city is situated about 100 km from the Baltic Sea, it is one of the two most important Polish seaports. Szczecin is famous for its shipping tradition. Since 1927 until now the final of the Tall Ships Races regatta is being organized in Szczecin’s port every year. Szczecin is located closer to Berlin than Warsaw and it is probably the reason why the city has so many cultural influences of Western Europe. A spectacular example is the radial (star-shaped) layout of streets. A similar model as the urban project of George Hausmann performed in Paris in the 19th century. Even though, the architecture of Szczecin variates between gothic, renaissance and baroque, interwoven with densely planted large parks and squares, still it’s the harbour crane the most recognisable element in Szczecin’s skyline.

POLISH TERRITORY

grodzka contemporary

TERRITORIAL POSITION OF SZCZECIN

grodzka contemporary

___grodzka contemporary___Cultural outreach on the Grodzka island

Szczecin was throughout the history owned by 3 different countries. The maps on the left illustrate position of Szczecin in European context as well as changes of Polish territory. Poland-SweedenGermany-Poland is the sequence of ownership, of which the traces can still be found in the city itself. Buildings, materials, architectural styles, historical facts, remains the of the old city wall found during the city excavations, were one of my first fascination in the project.

Szczecin was heavily destroyed during the Second World War. Especially the harbour became a target of airstrikes which effectively destroyed ca 90% of it. Further devastations were made by retreating German army. All port cranes and many warehouses were destroyed, relatively least affected were the waterfronts.

Digging into the books, maps, old photographs, taking guided tours through the city, visiting museums and archives helped me to discover more and more traces of the past. Materialisation was one of them which I focused on during the later stage of design. I merged two very present in the city tissue materials- brick and concrete, and a pattern used on prefab panels on most residential towers in Szczecin, and developed my own material for my design. It can be found in many variations and finishes as a polished floor finish, rough wall panelling, hammered and brushed.

CULTURAL SCENE IN SZCZECIN

___grodzka contemporary___Cultural outreach on the Grodzka island

Recent developments in Szczecin start to address the issues the city has been suffering from for many years. During the past few years, the focus in the city development was mainly on the growth of business areas and new office buildings. All until 2015, when the new iconic Philharmonic building by Barozzi Veiga Studio, and located next to it the Museum of Dialogue by KWK Promes architects were build. They are in fact the first cultural buildings built in the city since the last 30 years what certainly give promises to the underinvested cultural sector as being a possible mean of reinventing Szczecin’s post-industrial image.

___grodzka contemporary___Cultural outreach on the Grodzka island

When defining a program for my building I researched and visited one of the best examples of art galleries. My goal was to create a building which contained a variety of public activities dedicated to art as well as exhibition spaces both indoor and outdoor. As an outcome, I designed a building with an open plinth, which on the ground floor hosts the public activities such as workshop, cafe, gift shop, movies, lobby, ticket office, public gallery, creative corner and auditorium; and exhibition halls are contained within separate volumes on the upper levels.
