VIRTUAL POWER PLANT TECHNOLOGY PRECEDENT RESEARCH

VPP is a new more efficient and sustainable energy management system. It strongly connected with the concept of energy micro generation whereby a building or a household for instance can produce, store and even share the energy generated through renewable sources. A VPP clusters many of those micro generators so that they can work together as a conventional plant by means of centralized control system. What a VPP achieves is to interwine multiple sources concentrated in one area. Wind and solar power plants, storage batteries, biomass plants and conventional energy generation sources while coordinating them through a remote software system. When a certain consumer has run out of energy, he can have access to other sources or should a generation point have spare energy avaliable it can be shared with other consumers. There are plenty of benefits in this system it allows to produce energy at lower costs. It provides customers with enhanced flexibility, CO2 emissions are reduced and since consumption points are very closed to those where energy is gennerated, there’s a decrease in the loss of energy during transportation.

VIRTUAL POWER PLANT TECHNOLOGY PRECEDENT RESEARCH

The South Australian Government is providing support for Tesla to develop a community of 50,000+ homes with solar and powerwall battery systems across the state. By sharing energy generated by the sun between homes, this reduces the cost of energy for everyone in the network.

Residence could easily control this system via mobile devices, and be able to monitoring the energy data. The electricity generate from this system will stored into the Tesla battery. And when the battery is full, the residence can sell these spare electricity to the national grid.

Through the discussion with Toby on the class, few obvious issue has been shown up.

FRONT HOUSE

Firstly, lack of understanding of the breif requirement and the size of the project.Secondly, the form should be far more interesting than blocks. and it should have more height change. ELECTRIC GENERATOR

SECURITY

Among these Scheme, the last one with green roof space is having more potential in it.

W E E K

0 3

3D SKETCH DESIGN

Another design scheme about loop form that generates a interesting loop circuation with in the project. Green roof is applied to this scheme that comply with this loop circulation. The front house and the loading space is at the ground floor. However, the size of the whole project still have some problems. Especially for the space of data hall might not meet the requirement of the brief.

12

W E E K

0 3

3D SKETCH DESIGN

This design scheme was generate from the idea of honeycomb. I was interested the shape of the hexagon. And this shape might arrange the data hall space much more efficiently. At the meantime, it could become a modular system of constructing the data center.

13

W E E K

0 3

HEXAGON SHAPE EXPLORATION

Poland mathematician Jan Brozek stated that "The Hexagon can be tiled with the smallest perimeter of each range, which means that the hexagonal structure can build the largest area with the least materials in a certain volume." Therefore, using the hexagon as the profabicated modular system not only can provide more space, but also save the construction budget.

3D SKETCH DESIGN

A numbers of itteration about the patterns and the form of combination, and tring to generate and find the most interesting one. Within these three itteration, the pattern and form combined with each other too randomly and seeminly with no obvious rules. And the results is not too satified.

15

W E E K

3D SKETCH DESIGN

A numbers of itteration about the patterns and the form of combination, and tring to generate and find the most interesting one. Within this three itteration, a large space of terrance was generated. At the meantime, many of hollow-out space was also generated at the bottom part of the project.

16

W E E K

0 3

PLAN EXPLORATION OF ITTERATION

A roof plan about the last itteration has been explored, Through drawing this plan, the hidden opportunities about this scheme was revealed. Two terrance space was generated at the both side of project. And some kind of courtyard space at the middle. At the meantime, the gap space between each hexagon shape formed the circulation space that connects these public space

17

WEEK 04

18

W E E K

0 4

3D SKETCH DESIGN

After the dicussion with Toby, the direction of exploring the hexagon modular system project has been abandoned. Because this way of designing this project is lack of potential to generated interesting form and internal space. Therefore, the direction was changed to exploring more posibilities about this loop shape.

19

W E E K

0 4

3D SKETCH DESIGN

Besides the loop shape exploration, another series of circular machinery shape was explored. These scheme was stand on the logic that the functional space was distributed on the site and connected with the bridges and ramps to create more interesting circulation within the project.

20

W E E K

0 4

3D SKETCH DESIGN

This itteration about the loop form was explored in more detail way. The bottom pink space is the front house and the black loop shape is the data hall. and the interconnection space of the loop shape can be used as the Atrium and entry of the project. Howecer, the corridor like space is kind of struggle to apply the function of data hall/

21

W E E K

0 4

3D SKETCH DESIGN

The roof space of this project formed a interesting loop circulation that visitors can be walking on the roof area constantly. At the meantime, the loop shape structure formed a two courtyard space that can be used as a social and relaxing space for the local community.

22

W E E K

0 4

ELEVATION OF ITTERATION

23

W E E K

0 4

EXTERNAL RENDER OF ITTERATION

Through drawing the elevation and the external render, The overall visual effect of walking on the roof space is pretty good. The loop shape formed a interesting intersection point of two structure and provide a great view for the visitors that walking on the roof.

24

W E E K

0 4

3D SKETCH DESIGN

Compare to the last itteration, this form is more complex than the previous one. This itteration formed more loop shape and more intersection point which generates more possibilites out of the loop design.

25

W E E K

0 4

3D SKETCH DESIGN

It formed five courtyard space, within this space, recreation pods can be placed in there. In these recreational space, the functions like, hot spa and hot yoga can be applied to reuse the heat that generate from the data center.

26

W E E K

0 4

ELEVATION OF ITTERATION

27

W E E K

0 4

EXTERNAL RENDER OF ITTERATION

After drawing the elevation and the external render of this itteration, compare to the previous one, thie visual effect is not as good as the simple loop form. It look more complex and messy. Losing the sense of simple and beauty.

28

W E E K

0 4

3D SKETCH DESIGN

This scheme was stand on the logic that the circular functional space was distributed on the site and connected with the bridges and ramps to create more interesting circulation within the project. However, because of large numbers of space was replaced by the connection bridge, the functional space is decreasing.

29

W E E K

0 4

3D SKETCH DESIGN

Compare to the loop scheme, the circulation happened on this roof space is lack of moving up and down. because of the roof space is all on the same level. Although the ramps provides this opptunity to move out and move in the internal space. But, it seemingly not work in the data center project, because it requires the security access for the data hall

30

W E E K

0 4

EXTERNAL RENDER OF ITTERATION

After drawing the render of this scheme, i found that the courtyard space visual effect is good and have the beauty of symmetry. However, it is not as good as the visual effect of the loop scheme because it does not have the height change .

FEED BACK OF DESIGN AND SETTLEMENT OF THE CONCEPT

After exploring these itteration, the direction was settled. I will focus on the loop design scheme for the rest of the semester. Moreover, the concept and idea was also settled. It was using the loop design idea to create a interesting space on the roof to encourage the local community to interact with it. To allow the data center act as a "Data park" that could give the community as much as green open space, at the mean time, satisfying the need of a data center.

PRECEDENT RESEARCH

This project is the Farming Kindergarten designed by the Vo Trong Nghia Architects. I like the way of how the design team treated with the loop shape and how they use the roof space as the outdoor farming space that provides the play and study space for the kids. And how the roof ramp contact with the ground level. At the meantime, the court yard spaec also looks great. It formed a elegant courtyard space for kids to engage with. There are many aspects that i can learn from it.

FIRST OFFICAL SCHEME

This scheme is prettey success for achiving the loop design idea, at the meantime, it solved the issue of using the corridor like space as the data hall. It formed a large space at the ground level and remain the loop shape at the roof by creating height change of the externa wall. Moreover, it creates four courtyard at the top that can be used as the social and relaxing space. Furthermore, the green roof space can reuse the heat generate from the datahall at lower level This itteration provides a clear direction for the mid term presentation

From the typical plan, a numbers of issue can be found. First of all, the lay out of the data hall is not well considered. The curved arrangement and a long and maze like corridor make the people hard to access each data racks. At the meantime, the space of Atrium, office and recreation center is not well resolved.

The west side section is good and able to showing how the hot air move through the data hall space and gathering into systems and finally been delivered to the commercial green house at the top. Compare to the South side section, the south side section is not clear as the west side section. The line work is bit messy to illustrate what the space in there should be.

45

WEST SIDE& EAST SIDE ELEVATION

Obviously, the external materiality of the project is not well resolved. It could have more possibilities. Moreover, it can have different types of facade applied to the external wall. This should definitely been tested at the later design process.

0 7 RENDER

These renders is lacking of the surronding context. Meanwhile, the new render software can be used for the rest of this semester instead of using vray. Enscape is much more quicker and remaining high quality of render. At the meantime, it has alot of assets can be added in to the sence to make the effect of render much stronger

49

W E E K

0 7

INTERNAL RENDER

Same issue with the external render, for the internal render, the ceiling structure and many of the detail is lacking for the internal render, especially for the green house internal render, and the vegetation looks all same and lack of variety. For the render of the data hall, the ceiling height seems too low and the materiality of data racks is not well presented.

50

WEEK 08

51

W E E K

0 8

PRECEDENT RESEARCH

After the mid-term presentation, another idea was kind of contruct in my mind. Rather than using loop design to create public roof space, why not transfer all the roof space into a landform and hide the functional space at below. To actually make the project become a green park that allows local community to engage with. This project is a sports campus in quzhou, and designed by the MAD. This project inspired me alot. I am so interested in the way of how they deal with realtionship between the green land form and actual internal space

52

W E E K

0 8

3D SKETCH DESIGN

However, when i really begin to design it, it becomes so much struggle. I shouldn't abandon all the design work at the first half of the semester and start with a brand new one and the previous one works good for me. I have no reason to start a completely new design. i should learn good thing and feature out of this and see how to combine with my loop scheme.

53

W E E K

0 8

REFINING OF THE SCHEME

After disucss with engineer, it is good to move the power plant close to the building which can save alot of work to design the underground energy transfering system, at the mean time, reduce the loss of energy during the transfer process. On the other hand, There are requirement of the spacing between power plant and chiller, the spacing of thses elements from my previous scheme is too close to each other Therefore, in this scheme, i moved the chiller to the outside of the datahall, make it directlt contact with the datahall. At the meantime, saving the space for the electricity generator. Moreover, i applied the louver structure on the cover ramp of the generator to allow the generation contact with the fresh air.

54

WEEK 09

55

W E E K

0 9

REFINING OF THE SCHEME

After discuss with the engineer consultant. it is better to move the electricity generator close to the data hall rather than the chiller. Because the the transfering of the electricity is much easier to be loss during the transition and the transition system that connects the data hall and eletricity is harder to build. At the meantime, the electricity generator might need to repace when it not working. therefore to put it at the outside of the data hall is the better option

REFINING OF THE SCHEME

This is a brilliant design attemp that allows the running track go through the green house at the lower level. It makes the running track much more interesting with more ramp change. Moreover allow people able to running through the green house which is a really good experience. This change definitely improved the experience of engaging with the running trakc and also increase the depth of the loop design on the roof space.

58

WEEK 10

PRECECDENT RESEARCH

Because of the commercial green roof needs more sunlight penertrate into the space. The glass roof need to be applied to the design. In order to make more out of it, the transparent pv panel could be applied in here. This is not only able to generate clean eletricity by solar technology but also allows sunlight penetrate into the commercial green house "The fully transparent solar panel may by definition not absorb visible sunlight. However, researchers at Michigan State University used organic salts that absorb specific invisible wavelengths of light, such as ultraviolet light. This light is then transformed and the material of the panel moves it to its edges, where stripes of photovoltaic solar cells convert it into electricity. The efficiency of the fully transparent solar panels is currently about 1% with an estimated potential of 5%. Compared to the average efficiency of 15% for conventional solar panels, efficiencies of 5% and 7.2% for the fully and partially transparent panels respectively are still quite low."(GREEN MATCH, 2019)

60

W E E K

1 0

REFINING OF THE SCHEME

This is how it looks like when the transparent pv panel roof applied to the scheme. It looks much more realistic compare to the previous version, at the mean time, bringing more texture and visual change over the roof space which is pretty good. However, the structure under this pv panel roof is too much. It is not necessary to have too much structure under the roof, because it only taken the dynamic load. Therefore, the size and spacing of the ceiling structure need to be reconsidered.

61

W E E K

1 0

REFINING OF THE SCHEME

Another attemp of designning the layout of the data hall layout. the data rack been separated into these different small rooms with the corridor outside. Because of these circulation space, the numbers of data racks decreased dramatically. Therefore, i have to increased another level of data hall. Therefore, this scheme now have four data hall. However, after discuss with the engineer. Each data hall room space have the requirement the the space should in between 750m2 to 1200 m2. Obviously, some of the data hall room is too small. Meanwhile, the size of the corridor needs to be about 3 meters wide in order to move in and move out the chiller crack unit.

62

WEEK 11

63

W E E K

1 1

REFINING OF THE SCHEME

This is the final version of the data hall layout. All the data hall room size is controled between the 750m2 to 1200m2 At the meantime,a 3 meters wide central corridor is applied in to the data hall space which solved the equipment transition issue. Moreover, the switch room is added just besides the electricity generator which is easier to control and access the generator. Further more, the building core is added into the security space(client reception hall), One big good lift and two small passenger providing equipment dilvery service and vertical circulation for people.

64

W E E K

1 1

REFINING OF THE SCHEME

Since the increase of the numbers of the data hall, the overall height of the project has been rasied. The previous single level data hall now becomes the mutiple level data hall. Therefore, this section illustrated how the hot air been delivered into the commercial green house through mutipl levels. Meanwhile, Because of the air keep transfering to the upfloor green house, The data hall needs fresh air go into the data hall to prevent the pressure of the data hall become negative. Therefore it needs some strategy of natrual ventilation .

65

W E E K

1 1

REFINING OF THE SCHEME

In terms of the design of the facade, I initial come up with the idea of apply the truck tyre patterns to the facade, because the circular shape of the external wall always reminds me the sense of movement. Moreover, the roof running track that encourage people to running also expressed the idea of movement. Therefore, i want my building facade able to express the feeling of movement, and may be the tyre pattern is a way to express this idea through the facade.

66

W E E K

1 1

REFINING OF THE SCHEME

This is the first several attempt to apply patterns to the facade. Because of the restriction of modeling skill. I spend a lot of time to formulation the grasshopper script to help me achieve this idea. However, the effect is not that good, and the file is too big to use. Therefore, this way of using the grasshopper to produce facade was abandoned. Meanwhile, the choosen of pattern is not a good option, it can not express the feeling of movement.

67

W E E K

1 1

REFINING OF THE SCHEME

These facade test option is the best four among a huge number of facade pattern testing. However, these are still not good enough. These tyre pattern does not work well, it looks too solide and looks too much like a tyle and losing the sense of facade. And looks pretty weird. Compare to the vertical and horizontal louver facade, these louver facade definitely perform much better than than the tyre pattern. However it still needs more vairation.

68

WEEK 12

69

W E E K

1 2

REFINING OF THE SCHEME

These two pattern was choosen from the Brigitte Riley OP art. These two patterns illustrated the sense of movment really well to me. And in terms of facade, these two patterns can be applied to thhe louver facade design in both horizontal and vertical way.

70

W E E K

1 2

REFINING OF THE SCHEME

These facade testing option was about the horizontal louver. Among these four option, none of them is satisfying. The horizontal louver facade seemingly too messy when the wavy pattern become strong and hard to control.

71

W E E K

1 2

REFINING OF THE SCHEME

Compare to the horizontal louver facade, this vertical facade is performing much better. the wavy effect is much more obvious and clean. At the meantime, it is much easier to control the spacing of each louver. Among these two option, when the louver go all the way to the top looks much nicer.

72

W E E K

1 2

CHOICE OF NAMED VIEW

A numbers of named view has been choosen for the candidate of the final external render. I really want to show the facade effect for the entry, and how the facade effect people's visual and attracting them go insde the building. At the mean time the roof courtyard, site streests and the roof space are all really good view to choose

73

W E E K

1 2

LIGHTING EFFECT OF THE RUNNING TRACK

At the meantime, i really want to show the lighting effect of the running track which looks extremely cool at the night. This light is generate from people's foot step. When people running over the running track it will light up. the more people running on the running track, the more eletricity will be generate. The spare eletricity will be send to data center for daily use

74

W E E K

1 2

REFINING OF THE SCHEME

This bubble structure replaced the previous boring rectangular louver frame. It not only could providing air exchange for the chiller, but also atrracting people to the ramp green space and engage with this element and also use the green ramp cover as a green open space. At the mean time, it also been applied to the data hall roof courtyard, which also bring the air into the data hall at lower level.

WAVY LOUVER GENERATOR COVER

Same as the chiller cover, the previoud eletricity generator cover also has the boring vertical louver facade. Since the beautiful wavy facade has been formed, the generator cover louver facade should accompanied by that Therefore, a similar wavy facade has been redesigned and applied to the cover of the electricity generator. It allows the wavy facade going all around the building.

76

W E E K

1 2

3D SKETCH DESIGN

As for the office of the front house, i wanted to make it become a open plan office, with huge column structure holding up the roof like the image showed. I believe compare to the grids working space, the open plan office can bring much more space and energy and sunlight into the office space, and able to improve the working experience and efficient dramatically.

SELF REFLECTION

Great experience of 12 weeks journey of intergrated Studio. First time of exploring the design process that work with all different professional consultant, such as structural engineer, mechanical engineer and data center engineer. it is pretty unique design experience which definitely changed my mind of seeing design process in real life. Through this process, you have to not only considering the issue architectural design, but also all kinds of issue from mutiple aspects. This makes me formed a deeper understanding of architectural design. Only if engaging with more people from different aspects, the more aspects you can sense during the design, and finally your design will be into another level. Furthermore, i have had alot of issue during the design process, and i learned alot from it and it is extremely helpful to my future design studio Due to the restriction of the COVID-19 situation, we are not able to have face to face teaching might lead some misopportunity of my project, i will keep thinking and working on my project and develop it more in the future.
