Years Serving the SA Hotel Industry

From the President DAVID BASHEER – AHA|SA PRESIDENT

New Hurdle a Bitter Blow The next few weeks loom as amongst the most critical for hospitality.

Not only do we learn when we arrive at that magical “90% over 12 years of age” vaccination rate, but we also will get an appreciation of the ambitions of Government and the public service to remain in control of our businesses.

The roadmap announced on October 26 had most of us concerned and confused. Venues that benefit from domestic tourism have breathed a sigh of relief but for the rest, it was another setback. I’m no mathematician, but the amount of people required to be vaccinated at the long promised “80% over 16” rate versus the new bar of “90% over 12” does appear a disturbing figure. The AHA|SA is hearing reports the vaccination rates in this state have stalled. Not surprising, those keen to get vaccinated have done so. Those of us whose fortunes depend on everyone else doing the right thing are at the mercy of those whose income is not dependant

on the State freeing restrictions. The fate of our Christmas season – critical to venues most damaged by the restrictions - rests with not just the anti-vaxers but the vaccination apathetic. The AHA|SA has enthusiastically taken up the Premier’s invitation at the October 26 media conference to work with Government to get the best outcome. There remain more questions than answers. 1) When will we hit 90% over 12?

4 | Hotel SA | W W W . A H A S A . A S N . A U

2) What restrictions will remain? 3) What will the obligation be on venues to have their staff vaccinated? 4) What will the obligation be on venues to only allow vaccinated patrons into their venues? 5) Will there be a transition period for functions already booked in good faith, unaware that patrons may need to be double vaccinated? Back to Contents

Beyond the obvious frustration for industry that the goalposts have been moved, my major concern is it smacks of a public service reluctant to lose control of our business. Do they envisage a day where they won’t have their fingers in our lives? Over the next few weeks, the interstate experience will give us a preview of what our lives will look like beyond the 90% target. It is critical we return to having only one public service body - logically Consumer and Business Services - deciding limits and associated trading conditions. History says SA Health has rarely empathised with the plight of our members and our staff since March 2020. On November 1, it was frightening to read The Advertiser’s report of the Chief Health Officer suggesting that restrictions, including mask wearing, would need to remain in place for 300 days after November 23. For too long now we have been strangled by health red tape and regulations for the greater good of our COVID-19 response. We understood and accepted this. Equally, we have every right to believe those days will very soon disappear. Remember when we were “all in this together”? MENTAL HEALTH CONCERN You could not be blamed for feeling COVID-19 is the only health issue requiring attention. For too many in our industry, the 20-month white knuckle ride around lockdowns and restrictions has taken its toll on our people’s mental health. This is coupled with the fact for almost two years we have been telling customers what they can and cannot do, whilst patiently explaining to patrons that we don’t make the rules. Yet the fact we are obliged to enforce them has resulted in operators and staff Back to Contents

enduring sustained abuse as we have been forced to become the frontline “Covid cops” on the beat. The exhausting prospect of enforcing vaccine passports to battle fatigued customers heightens those concerns. Industry mental health issues now sit squarely alongside economic considerations at the top of the AHA|SA agenda. This is why we have partnered with EML to contribute $110,000 towards tailored, industry-specific mental health programmes. During the year we have also supported a range of community programmes with a focus on mental health. Last month, the AHA|SA - through members contributions to the Independent Gaming Corporation pledged $10,000 to Erin and Soda’s Mental Health awareness month in conjunction with the Breakthrough Foundation. This follows a similar commitment to Will and Dave’s Undies Drive on 5AA in July, supporting Katherine House and the Hutt Street Centre. We do understand there will be a need to continue that support into 2022. TWO SPEED HOTEL ECONOMY We must remain mindful that COVID-19 has produced a two speed hotel economy and it impacts people in different ways. Many of our CDB venues, particularly our accommodation hotels, are in real trouble, along with our members who don’t enjoy the benefit of significant gaming or retail revenue. For the second consecutive year it was impossible to judge the prestigious best live music venue at our recent Awards for Excellence. Our venues are the natural home of live music and getting the musicians, technicians and of course our venues back on their feet is a priority.

Those most impacted by the COVID-19 regulations are deserving of the greatest consideration. They have been left behind with minimal Government support after JobKeeper finished. It need not be restricted to handouts. Other countries such as England, Japan and Norway have assisted on-premise venues with a cut in beer excise. The AHA|SA has long agitated this federal tax is far too high. We are currently the fourth highest beer taxed country in the world, and will rise to third in 2023, overtaking Japan. Norway is the highest, but after they reduced their beer tax by 10%, the gap is narrowing. Last week, Great Britain reacted to the COVID-19 plight of pubs by offering the biggest tax cut for beer in 50 years, in what the Chancellor described as ‘a long term investment in British pubs’. A reduction in our crippling beer tax would assist COVID-19 struggling pubs and boost employment. Any such announcement would go down very well with the punters on the eve of a Federal election. CONGRATULATIONS Our 2021 Awards for Excellence was a sensational night. Congratulations to our joint winners for Best Overall Hotel, the Bridgeport and Marion Hotels. The Bridgeport is a tribute to the vision and investment by Ian Tregoning and Graham Hobbs and a real boost for our regions. As a back-to-back winner of Best Overall Hotel, the Marion is the reward for a stunning rejuvenation by the Hurley family and a wonderful addition to the hospitality landscape of the southern suburbs. Best of luck to all our winners in next year’s National Awards.

Years Serving the SA Hotel Industry

From the General Manager IAN HORNE – AHA|SA GENERAL MANAGER

The Arena – It’s a No-Brainer From a hotel and hospitality industry perspective, the development of the Adelaide Riverbank Arena is an essential piece of infrastructure whose development must be a priority if Adelaide is to compete successfully in the new post COVID-19 world. The promised new arena is to be first and foremost an outstanding contemporary live entertainment venue but importantly with much needed convention/ exhibition adaptability and additional capacity, that also provides unsurpassed facilities and match-day experience for professional court sports. Simply put it is a multi-faceted solution that give the greatest possible flexibility to ensure South Australia is able to bid for any and every type of business event, cultural, entertainment and commercial gathering and yes, even a range of professional court sports. The Adelaide Riverbank Arena will significantly strengthen the Adelaide Riverbank Precinct’s competitive advantage and positioning as a world leading event, entertainment, and tourism precinct. It’s a crucial part of a bigger jigsaw puzzle that will place Adelaide as a competitive and desirable destination on par with any similar offering in the southern hemisphere, South East Asia and the world. Just because South Australians think Adelaide is a great place to visit doesn’t make it so in the eyes of the world. Adelaide and South Australian has some 6 | Hotel SA | W W W . A H A S A . A S N . massive competition from other Australian State capitals with bigger populations and easier access and a range of international destinations like Hong Kong. Singapore, New Zealand just to name a few. That’s why the Arena model as part of an expanded Adelaide Convention Centre offering is crucial. The Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Port Road is nearing the end of its useful life and its capacity is clearly too small to enable the world’s biggest entertainment acts to be commercially viable. It’s also completely isolated from the CBD, the riverbank and the multitude of other City attractions that make up a capital city experience. Back to Contents

If the Arena expansion does not proceed, Adelaide is going to increasingly miss out on more concert tours, the bigger business events and yes some outstanding professional sporting opportunities. That’s the harsh reality.

“The value of national and international business events, cultural and entertainment and sporting events is a simple equation.” The value of national and international business events, cultural and entertainment and sporting events is a simple equation. It’s measured in greatly increased bed nights, further investment in infrastructure, greater appeal of Adelaide and South Australia as a state to invest and significant additional and permanent jobs. It’s a no-brainer. Can we afford an expanded convention, entertainment, and sporting facility with our health system under such pressure? Back to Contents

Well of course we can and must. The cost of the Arena is spread over a number of years, there will be the sale of the Port Road site and importantly the total Convention facility on the riverbank will generate significant additional annual value of around $69 million to South Australian economy when operational. Then there is the additional revenue from additional bed nights, tours, transport, and hospitality shared by a multitude of SA based services and suppliers. The Arena is much more than a basketball court - it’s a crucial piece of infrastructure ensuring the Adelaide Convention Centre complex continues to maintain and create business activity and opportunity and so importantly additional tourism, entertainment, and business events revenue for the State Government and the tourism and hospitality industry and of course many more jobs well into the future! It’s a no-brainer!

Scott’s Spot Hello all and welcome to the November edition of Scott’s Spot. This month’s edition will cover the usual short stories, photos and random observations over the last month. This month, the spotlight will be on a short, heartwarming story from the Owen Arms Hotel  which reinforces the importance of community and friendships that this industry thrives on. REGIONAL MEETINGS There was one Regional this month which covered the Adelaide Metropolitan area down at The Palais in Semaphore  where we had over 100 members and corporate partners attend. A massive thanks to Steve and Bob Karpluk along with functions manager, Vicki Konnis, for hosting this event on a beautiful, October Spring day.

Bob, Steve and Vicki from the Palais with Mark Falconer from the Broadway Hotel  jumping in with Johnny Giannitto from the Giannitto Hotel Group.

Here is the touching story of long-term customer, Keith, in the words of Owen Arms publican, Cathy Gregory. Keith moved to Owen in 1992 and our family bought and moved into the Owen Arms Hotel about two weeks later. Keith was an Englishman with a broad accent and bushy grey sideburns. He was also a loyal customer, regularly frequenting our hotel over three decades. Obviously, you get to know a bloke pretty well over 30 years. He was a passionate Crows supporter, he loved soccer and was apparently pretty good at it when he was younger. He loved to read, he loved answering the questions on the Chase TV show, he loved West End Draught and he really did not like seafood or mushrooms. As life goes…Keith got sick and very sadly after a short illness, he passed away. After his funeral in Balaklava the wake was of course at the Owen Arms Hotel, and later that afternoon the funeral directors drove the hearse to Owen, and everybody stood each side of the main road in front of the pub with a West End pint, saying “cheers” to Keith as he did his last drive by the hotel in the back of the hearse on his way to the crematorium. A few weeks later, Keith’s brother came to the hotel and handed my husband a pale blue urn and said, “This is Keith.” His kids have a little bit of him each in a locket around their necks and he requested before he died that the rest of him had to come to the pub! Well, this has never happened to us before, we were shocked and we didn’t really know what to do. We were sort of proud that he wanted to stay at the pub, but my husband said, “Where do we put him?”

I’m sure by now, you’re all listening to the AHA|SA podcast, “Our Shout”. I have had the pleasure of interviewing hotel identities and recently met Damian Peterson, Publican at The Hotel Metropolitan . We had to start with a soothing ale before the hardhitting questions were asked! We had a blast recording this podcast and thanks to Damian for being involved. Make sure you have a listen by clicking here . See photo below with Damian. 8 | Hotel SA | W W W . A H A S A . A S N . A U

I said to put him next to the TV in the front bar - he can hear the Chase clearly and he can watch all the Crows games. So that’s what we did. We have a few concerns about what the protocol is when you take custody of a light blue urn… If we sell the hotel, does he stay with the hotel or do we take him with us? When we die, do we leave him to our kids? Do we make him part of the lease agreement when we sell and list him as part of the plant and equipment? These questions all remain unanswered but, in the meantime, he’s safe up there next to the TV in his blue Back to Contents

On the road urn, and if anyone wants to have a chat with him, they ask bar staff if he can come down and we put him on the bar, and they can have a beer with him and then he goes back up next to the TV.

This story is so beautiful and, frankly, put a tear to my eye when reading and compiling for this edition. The below photo features a very good friend of Keith’s, Susie Rankine of Owen, having a beer with him, as she often does. The one and only GM Andrew Tyson in the engine room of the Waikerie Hotel .

Can I stress that if there are any stories to tell - and there would be plenty - please let me know, as community and friendship within pubs is such a beautiful thing! Finally, it’s time to farewell Phil and Maz Turner who are retiring after being publicans at The Marree Hotel  for 10 years. Enjoy! Following are a few snaps taken when out and about. Until next time, bye for now. Back to Contents

Since opening in 1854, The Cremorne Hotel  has been an impressive landmark on Unley Road.

doorway from the central area of the hotel through to the sports bar and gaming room.

Duxton Pubs Group acquired the property in March 2021 and traded for a month before closing the main bar and dining room for renovations, which are now complete.

“This was intended to create a point of difference between these areas and the main hotel operation,” said Joshua.

“We identified the hotel as having huge potential to return a food-focussed venue back to the community, whilst continuing the tradition of being an iconic suburban drinking destination,” said Joshua Hillary, Group General Manager. DESIGN The recent refurbishment was headed by Sarah Matthews and Kara Walsh (interior), working with Carlo Panozzo of Folland Panozzo Architects. Minimal structural changes were made to The Cremorne—the main work was installing a wall and

“It gives patrons the ability to have a space unique to the experience they are setting out to have, be it watching sport or punting, or dining with family or friends, or enjoying a drink and some live music in the sunny courtyard.” Those familiar with The Cremorne may notice the ceilings in the main bar have been lifted, and lighter tones have been incorporated in the fixtures and furniture, resulting in a “much brighter and open” style. Local company Agostino and Brown supplied all of the bar stools, booths and tables in the dining, bar and lounge areas.

FUTURE PLANS Further renovations are set to take place in early 2022. There are plans to make changes to the façade of the hotel and freshen up the sports bar and TAB. The screening between the beer garden and Unley Road is also rumoured to be due for a makeover, and there are suggestions that the drive through bottle shop is in line for a significant upgrade. The redevelopment coincides with the development of a seven-storey apartment complex directly across Unley Road. That project is reported to be worth $41 million and includes 59 apartments and a retail complex “We are very excited to see The Cremorne continue to be a staple of the evolving Unley community,” said Joshua. “We are passionate about bringing a diverse food offering back to the dining room, and pushing the boundaries of our beverage program to ensure guests continue to enjoy The Cremorne in whichever way best suits them now and into the future.”

The ABC reported: “Named Jumbo at the time, Tommy was… bought by the licensee of Adelaide's Cremorne Gardens Hotel, an Unley establishment that wanted South Australia's first elephant in its adjacent zoo, which already had a monkey, emu, kangaroo and parrots. “But Tommy was a five-year-old youngster who would regularly wander into the neighbours' yard where he pulled washing off the line or played with washing tubs because he loved water.” While pubs having zoos is a thing of the past, there is no doubt that there is a new sense of fun at The Cremorne.

AHA|SA MEMBER INFORMATION

Respect at Work Legislation: What it Means for Your Business OWEN WEBB - AHA|SA WORKPLACE RELATIONS MANAGER

In September this year the Federal Government introduced the new Respect at Work Legislation. In this article we look at the recent legislative changes and what the implications are for businesses moving forward.

• its drivers, including risk factors for particular population groups or in different workplace settings

SEX DISCRIMINATION AND FAIR WORK (RESPECT AT WORK) AMENDMENT ACT 2021

• the current legal framework

RESPECT AT WORK REPORT

• its impacts on individuals and businesses, including its economic impact

In response to the National Inquiry and a number of recommendations from the Respect@Work Report, in June this year the Government introduced into Federal Parliament the Sex Discrimination and Fair Work (Respect at Work) Amendment Bill 2021.

In 2018, the Federal Government (the Government) announced that there would be a national inquiry into sexual harassment in Australian workplaces. The Government commissioned the national Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Ms Kate Jenkins to oversee the inquiry. The Terms of Reference of the Inquiry was to review and report on workplace sexual harassment and make recommendations in relation to the following: • its prevalence, nature and reporting in Australian workplaces • the role of technology

• existing measures to address it and examples of good practice

In January 2020, the Sex Discrimination Commissioner released the Respect@Work Report: National Inquiry into Sexual Harassment in Australian Workplaces. One of the overarching recommendations from the report was the importance of legislative amendments to simplify and clarify the overarching legal frameworks to ensure that employers and employees are able to effectively address sexual harassment in the workplace.

Having passed through Parliament the Sex Discrimination and Fair Work (Respect at Work) Amendment Act 2021 (Cth) (Respect at Work Act) commenced on 11 September 2021. The Respect at Work Act makes amendments to the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth), the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) and the Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986 (Cth). So what are the major amendments: Back to Contents

PCBU, employee or employer could for example be visiting an offsite venue to attend an organised work event or function, visiting the workplace out of hours or be on a designated break from their shift. HARASSMENT ON THE GROUND OF SEX In addition to sexual harassment and sexual discrimination, the Sex Discrimination Act has been amended to include a new sexbased harassment provisions. The amendment makes it expressly clear that it is unlawful to harass a person on the ground of their sex.

EXPANDED COVERAGE OF THE SEX DISCRIMINATION ACT The Respect at Work Act amends the Sex Discrimination Act to ensure that the Sex Discrimination Act’s provisions are closely aligned with terms used in model Work Health and Safety laws such as the concepts of a ‘worker’ and ‘PCBU’ (persons conducting a business or undertaking). The use of these terms ensures that the coverage of the Sex Discrimination Act is expanded to include persons not previously covered under the Act including interns, volunteers and self-employed. The Sex Discrimination Act has also been expanded to include members of parliament, their staff, judges and public servants at all levels of government. The Sex Discrimination Act has also been amended to include the term “in connection with” such that a worker, PCBU, employee or employer does not have to actually be performing their work duties at the time the sexual harassment occurs in order for the harassment to be covered under the Sex Discrimination Act. The worker, Back to Contents

Under the amendments a person harasses another person on the ground of sex if they engage in unwelcome conduct of a seriously demeaning nature by reason of the person’s sex in circumstances in which, in line with the existing test for sexual harassment, a reasonable person would have anticipated that the person harassed would be offended, humiliated or intimidated. Harassment on the ground of sex will include harassment by reason of: • The sex of the person harassed; or • A characteristic that generally relates to persons of the sex of the person harassed; or • A characteristic that is generally attributed to persons of the sex of the person harassed. VICTIMISATION The Sex Discrimination Act has been amended to introduce a new provision that makes it unlawful to victimise a person if they have taken action, or propose to take action, in relation to a discrimination or harassment claim. Victimising conduct can now form the basis of a civil action for unlawful discrimination in addition to a criminal complaint under the Sex Discrimination Act. So a person could make a complaint to the Australian Human

Rights Commission (AHRC) and additionally undertake civil action against an alleged perpetrator. TERMINATION OF COMPLAINTS TO THE AHRC The Sex Discrimination Act allows for the President of the AHRC to terminate a complaint on discretionary grounds. Previously such complaints could be terminated on discretionary grounds by the President if the complaint was lodged more than 6 months after the alleged conduct occurred. The Respect at Work Act has amended the timeframe such that the President will only have discretionary grounds to terminate the complaint if it is lodged more than 24 months after the alleged unlawful conduct took place. STOP SEXUAL HARASSMENT ORDER The Respect at Work Act amends the existing anti-bullying legislation in the Fair Work Act, to make it clear that within that jurisdiction, the Fair Work Commission (FWC) can make an order to stop sexual harassment in the workplace. The FWC can make an order to stop sexual harassment, where it is satisfied that the worker has been sexually harassed at work by one or more individuals, and it is satisfied that there is a risk that the worker will continue to be sexually harassed at work by the individual or individuals. The FWC must be satisfied that the harassment has occurred to make an order, and orders would not be available in cases where there is no risk of harassment occurring again, for example when the person who harassed the worker is no longer employed at the workplace. UNFAIR DISMISSAL The Respect at Work Act has amended the Fair Work Act to clarify that sexual harassment can be conduct amounting to a valid reason for dismissal in determining whether a dismissal was harsh, unjust or unreasonable.

W W W . A H A S A . A S N . A U

| Hotel SA | 39

Sexual harassment has also been included on the list of conduct that constitutes ‘serious misconduct’ in the Fair Work Regulations. MISCARRIAGE LEAVE The Respect at Work Act also varies the existing entitlement to compassionate leave in the Fair Work Act to enable an employee to take up to two days of paid compassionate leave (unpaid for casuals) if the employee, or employee’s current spouse or de facto partner, has a miscarriage. Miscarriage is defined as the spontaneous loss of the embryo or fetus before 20 weeks’ gestation. This is based on the general medical meaning of miscarriage. IMPLICATIONS FOR BUSINESSES In light of the introduction of the new Respect at Work legislation we recommend that employers should review the following areas:

Existing Policies & Procedures

Leave Policies

Employers should review their existing sexual harassment policies and procedures to incorporate areas such as the new ground of sex-based harassment, the expanded coverage under the Sex Discrimination Act and the FWC’s new ability to make orders to stop sexual harassment in the workplace.

Employers are encouraged to review any existing policies on leave entitlements to ensure they are updated to incorporate the two days of paid compassionate leave (unpaid for casuals) if the employee, or employee’s current spouse or de facto partner, has a miscarriage.

Internal Complaints/Grievance Procedures Any procedures with respect to complaint handling and grievance disputes should also be reviewed to ensure they are consistent with the Respect at Work legislative changes. Any internal complaints mechanism should be easily understood and widely publicised to ensure that staff are fully aware of what they can do in the event they wish to make a complaint in relation to sexual harassment or discrimination.

Training Training on sexual harassment and discrimination should be provided to any new employees as part of their overall onboarding process. This ensures that new staff members understand what the expected behaviours of the company are, what constitutes sexual harassment and what to do in the event that an employee wishes to make a complaint. For existing employees refresher training should also be provided on these topics as part of their ongoing professional development.

AHA|SA Supports Mental Health Fundraiser Australian Hotels Association of South Australia General Manager, Ian Horne, has made a $10,000 song dedication in Erin and Soda’s Feelgood Friday Jukebox for Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation fundraiser. The AHA|SA GM told the show the donation was inspired by a tough couple of years for SA’s hospitality industry, which has been among the hardest hit during the covid pandemic. He said more than 25,000 South Aussies were stood down from hospitality jobs during the first lockdown, in March 2020. He said the mental impact from that has been evident across the industry.

“It took until the end of June to get a large number of them back (into jobs). And of course, that (uncertainty) creates havoc for people,” Horne said. In a Mix 102.3 first, Erin and Soda are swapping their breakfast show for a non-stop jukebox-style request show, every Friday for the rest of October to raise funds for Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation. Each song request costs $250 – the exact amount it takes for Breakthrough Foundation to train one mental health first aider. The goal is to raise enough funds to help Breakthrough train a Mental Health First Aiders for every Adelaide club,

community, and sporting group in Adelaide. However, the AHA|SA has gone over and above and donated 10K for a single song. The song was revealed on Friday’s show and Ian promised it’s one you’ve never heard on Mix 102.3 before.

Charity Golf Day Scores $2.8 Million to Assist Many Children’s Charities The Liquor Industry Golf Club (LIGC) holds an annual golf day in February each year to support Children’s charities here in South Australia. Next year’s event for the LIGC Charity Golf Day will be held on Monday 7 February 2022 at Grange Golf Club – shotgun start at 7am! There will be $70,000 from the 2021 Charity Day to distribute to selected children’s charities which will be announced closer to the event. The Charity Day is a key event on the hospitality golf calendar and has raised considerable funds over the past 20 years of approx.$2.8 million. It is attended by many industry businesses, providers and a gang

of hoteliers who also volunteer their help on the day. Exceptional on-going sponsorship has been assured by our major sponsorship partners in BankSA and Grange Golf Club to key corporates with Thomas Farm Meats, West End, Coopers, Coca-Cola, CUB Premium beverages and many other allied liquor industry providers. Rob Gillies, Chair of the LIGC Charity Day committee, understands what it will mean to the children’s charities who benefit from the funds this year. “The generosity of the hospitality industry and other associated

businesses ensures that this Charity day spreads the funds far and wide,” Rob said. Every year we have a record number of applications from various Children’s charities to seek funds from our event, and we will again endeavour to assist those charities most in need.” The day will celebrate these charities, and also move towards the landmark $3 million raised. Sequoia Lodge  is the only place in the world you can find four world-class wine regions within a 50 kilometre radius. The recently-opened luxury lodge sits on Mount Lofty, above the Piccadilly Valley in the Adelaide Hills. It officially opened its doors in August, after more than a year of delays due to COVID-19. David Horbelt, Sequoia owner and an experienced hotelier, purchased the estate over a decade ago. Some five years later, Jesse Kornoff, Estate General Manager, joined the project. Jesse’s career had spanned all manner of hotels—predominately five-star—from boutique properties around Australian to 480-room resorts in Queensland, but luxury accommodation was his specialty. He and David immediately went to work pitching their product internationally. The feedback was clear—to crack the luxury lodge market, Sequoia needed to offer experiences guests couldn’t have anywhere else in the world. “Sequoia Lodge is the culmination of a vision that started forming more than a decade ago,” said David. “We wanted to create a hospitality offering of the highest calibre where guests from all over the world would feel at home amongst the incredible wine and gastronomic experiences of the Adelaide Hills and surrounding valleys and vales.” 46 | Hotel SA | W W W . “We wanted to create a hospitality offering of the highest calibre where guests from all over the world would feel at home amongst the incredible wine and gastronomic experiences of the Adelaide Hills and surrounding valleys and vales.” Sequoia comprises 14 high-end suites overlooking the valley. Everything is bespoke, and the experiences on offer champion locality. According to Jesse, the lodge is a “gateway into the region… connecting people to not only the region but also the people and experiences and stories behind some of those really iconic brands that we have in South Australia, whether it be Penfolds or Henschke or R.M. Williams or Jurlique.” Back to Contents

The duo wanted Sequoia to be a place to connect with the land via intimate, on-site experiences. The Peramangk people are the traditional custodians of the Adelaide Hills, and at Sequoia, guests can listen to Aboriginal elders explain what Mount Lofty means to their people. Guests can also enjoy sunrise yoga or a guided nature walk, stargaze, relax in the artisan spring-fed hot pool, or take part in a ‘Maker and Somm’ session where a local winemaker will join a Sequoia sommelier to taste and discuss their wines. Some of the off-site experiences include going behind the scenes at R.M. Williams, driving a luxury car through the Adelaide Hills thanks to a collaboration with Prancing Horse, visiting Cleland Wildlife Park to hold a koala, or going on a private truffle hunt. Jesse called COVID-19 a “blessing in disguise” for Sequoia and many regional hotels. He said the closed borders gave the lodge “a level of market cut through” that may have otherwise taken a number of years to achieve. The lodge is currently sitting at close to 90% capacity, and has been very popular with locals. According to Jesse, it is the first product of its kind to open in over ten years (Saffire Freycinet Tasmania was the most recent).

“If you were coming to SA and you wanted to stay in the best hotel, you’d choose to come and stay at Mount Lofty House,” said Jesse. “However, if you were wanting to come and experience something you couldn’t have anywhere else in the world, you would come to Sequoia. “I think we’re going to be exceptionally busy for a long time.”

Our Purpose - To provide the hotel industry the capacity to respond to community concerns related to the harm associated with gambling by contributing to early intervention and support for problem gamblers and their families. Our Goal - A compliant and proactive hotel industry that works with regulators, gambling help services, and players to limit the harm caused by gambling. Gaming Care is the hotels responsible gambling early intervention agency, and is an initiative of the AHA|SA. Gaming Care’s role to assist venues to minimise the harm caused by problematic gambling behaviour in all South Australian hotels with gaming machines by working directly with venue staff, Gambling Help Services, other relevant organisations and stakeholders.

For any assistance or support please contact your local Gaming Care Officer, or our office for information on how Gaming Care can assist your venue.

SOME OF OUR DUTIES INCLUDE:

Assisting hotel staff in the early identification and support of patrons and staff who may be experiencing difficulty with their gaming behaviour. Developing and promoting initiatives, programs and policies designed to facilitate the early identification of problematic gambling behaviour. Assisting hotel staff in providing responsible gambling service,

 on or with the capacity to influence the service, by training

in responsible service of gambling. This helps reduce harm through the creation of a responsible gambling culture within the venue. Gaming Care has developed a Responsible Gambling Document for venues which details the ways in which staff training and measures for intervention with problem gamblers are implemented, and the roles of staff in the implementation of the code.
