NT SEEKS MTA PARTNERSHIP FOR EV TRAINING The MTA has been approached to partner with the Northern Territory Government for the delivery of a hybrid and battery electric vehicle course.
“The Northern Territory government has approached us to help support the delivery of a course and we are still in the negotiation phase.
The Association already has a short course and an advanced five-day course operating successfully in South Australia.
“We’re working through the detail of how it might actually work.”
Courses were developed in response to the fact that most mechanics lack the official training and specialised skills needed to effectively service and repair battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The advanced course expands upon the HEV/BEV short course and takes participants through advanced practices in working with electric technology. This course is a must for businesses and staff wanting to upskill and take advantage of working with the hybrid and battery electric technology today and in the future as the demand for skilled HEV/BEV mechanics only increases. “We recognise that the there is a need for our Northern Territory members to have access to quality training in this space,” said Kaes Cillessen, the MTA’s Industry and Government Engagement Manager. “We have industry coming from interstate to attend these courses, so there is a clear recognition that the MTA delivers a high quality course.

The MTA’s CEO Paul Unerkov said, “There are a number of opportunities in the industry that are approaching us and they are exciting changes we need to embrace. “Businesses and the next generation of automotive technicians should be getting behind these changes too and recognising the potential for training and employment opportunities of the near future. “We are leaders in hybrid and electric vehicle training, important skills necessary in light of recent automotive curriculum reviews that showed businesses will regard automotive electrical training higher than in previous decades.” The courses cover topics such as safe work practices in relation to electric vehicles, electrical systems, HEV/ BEV components, electricity principles, diagnosing and repairing high voltage rechargeable battery energy storage systems, depowering and reinitialising of battery electric vehicles and general servicing.
