Happy 2021!

Even though 2020, our 50th Anniversary year, was not what we had hoped for, we still celebrated in our own special way with some wonderful activities, five beautiful new playgrounds, and the completion of the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex renovation project.

Throughout this past year, Bolingbrook Park District has kept to our mission of fiscal responsibility through nearly $2 million in expense management efforts when revenues were down. This affected staffing levels, program offerings, events, and some of the Park District services you have come to know and love.

We are making every attempt to bring the fun back in 2021! Throughout the entire year, you will see new programs, new services, and revamped events; all with a focus on wellness and safety. Our talented team has an amazing year of fun planned - so get ready!

Our capital improvement (referendum implementation) plan will continue in 2021 as well. You will see new playgrounds at Plimmer, The Forest, Ivanhoe, Drafke, and Century Parks. The other major project is a new parking lot and drive at Central Park/Annerino Community Center.

We will continue to evolve and meet your programming needs in this ever-changing environment. Whatever your interests are, our team is prepared to provide you with world class service and a wonderful experience you have come to know and enjoy.

Board of Commissioners Meeting Information The Bolingbrook Park District Board of Commissioners have scheduled board meetings the third Thursday of each month. Normally, these meetings are held in the Board Room at the Annerino Community Center (201 Recreation Drive). With the current guidelines of the State of Illinois’ Restore Illinois Plan, these meetings are now held virtually via ZOOM. Bolingbrook Park District Programs: Safe and Fun for Everyone! _______________________________

Our team has been hard at work all year adjusting programs while working within the State of Illinois Restore Illinois phases. As a result, we still are “Where the fun is!”

We’ve said all along that wherever your comfort level is, that we’d be here for our community. We have been offering programs virtually for those that feel comfortable at home and the programs done in our facilities have followed strict guidelines to make sure all participants are safe and happy. Those guidelines included things like: • Customers and personnel have been required to wear a face covering and maintain a 6-foot distance from others.

• Participants were allowed to remove face coverings when the entire class reported to their designated program space and participants were spaced 6-feet or more apart.

• Fitness equipment at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex was placed with a minimum of 6-feet between equipment when a barrier was not able to be used. Equipment where a barrier was placed has a minimum of 3-feet between equipment.

Swim instructors double-up face coverings by using face masks and shields during lessons.

• Public restrooms: sinks, toilets, countertops, vanity mirrors and faucets in each facility are cleaned and disinfected every 90 minutes.

• Programs had a minimum of 15 minutes between classes to provide time to clean and disinfect.

• Hand sanitizer dispensers were added throughout our buildings.

• Personnel and participants complete a wellness check questionnaire to ensure they are not experiencing COVID-like symptoms before starting class or using one of our facilities.

As we move toward 2021, we will continue to adapt these guidelines as the phases change. You will notice in the January/ February Program Guide that there is chart that detailing if the program you’re looking to participate in can or cannot occur during the phase we’re in at the time, or if it will be done virtually.

“We’re prepared for anything,” said Kai Wahlgren, superintendent of recreation.

“The programs might change at a moments notice, but I’m proud of the work we’ve done to make sure our community has fun.”

2020: Not Your Typical Anniversary Celebration

Did you know 2020 was our 50th Anniversary? It’s not the one we had envisioned but we certainly made the best of it doing what everyone else has this year: adjusting. We were sad that we weren’t able to have a giant celebration like we had planned, but we still made sure we celebrated the best way we could.

February 6, which seems like years ago, you got to see a taste of what we had planned for the year. Many enjoyed the photo booth with Parkie. We’re sure many put our 50th Anniversary edition head phones to good use this year with all the e-learning and Zoom calls.

Then in March, just as we were gearing up to launch all of our summer activities like Summer Day Camp, Visit Your Local Park, swimming at Pelican Harbor Outdoor Aquatic Park, summer concerts and movies, the world turned upside down and we were forced to shut-down. Our team quickly switched gears to virtual programming and patiently anticipated the day we could open back up. We took that time to prepare for your return with re-vamped programs with safety protocols. In July, we were thrilled to offer programming like: • Camp Connections Summer Day Camp • Golf at Boughton Ridge Golf Course • Outdoor group exercise classes and open fitness time slots • Drive-In Movies • Gymnastics • Lap Swimming at Pelican Harbor Aquatic Park • Fishing at Hidden Lakes Historic Trout Farm

“I was really proud of our team with the things we were able to do, despite the limitations,” said Mike Baiardo, director of recreation & facilities. “It definitely wasn’t a typical year by any means, but the fun felt the same and it makes us happy to be able to bring some sense of normalcy to people.”

As for our 50th Anniversary, we posted throwback pictures to our social media pages highlighting past programs and events, construction of buildings and playgrounds, and other important dates in our long history.

In August, we dug up the time capsule that was placed by the flagpole at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex 25 years ago.

Up came a water-logged container filled with soaking wet flags, shirts, cups, and documents that were unfortunately all destroyed.

In October, we placed a new, completely waterproof time capsule back where the old one was to be dug up at our 75th Anniversary in 2045.

Though it wasn’t ideal, we are happy to say we made the best of it. We have our community to thank for that. We have and continue to appreciate your patience as we navigate these challenging times. We look forward to the day we can welcome you back at 100%.

Maintaining a Healthy Tree Population _____________________________

You may have noticed when you’ve been around town that the Natural Resources team at Bolingbrook Park District have been removing a number of trees. Rest assured, there are good reasons for this. At the start of 2020, Bolingbrook Park District worked with Graf Urban Forestry Professionals on an inventory of all the trees across the 1,100+ acres of open space.

Of the 4,438 trees that were inventoried, a number of them were rated as a 5, which means they were up for immediate removal.

Trees rated with a 1 were noted as specimen perfect trees. On average, we received a rating of 2.88, which is above average.

As summarized in the final report: “Bolingbrook Park District should be commended for its commitment to maintaining an overall healthy tree population. BPD is clearly committed to maintaining this tree

population, and continuing to improve it in the future.”

Daniel Finn, the Horticulturist/Arborist for the park district is in his second year in his current role. He graduated from University of Illinois-Chicago with a degree in Earth & Environmental Science. He worked closely with Graf to understand the final report and what to do with it in the future.

“It’s important to have a diversity of tree species,” said Finn. “If a fungus or disease moves through, it won’t wipe out half the trees in the park district.”

Not including the 400 acres of natural areas, it is estimated that there are 5,200 trees across Bolingbrook that our teams maintain. A total of 140 trees have been removed as they were either dead or in poor/hazardous condition this year. In addition, 58 trees will be planted during this fall season, either as replacements or memorial trees.

The Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex renovation project that began back in April of this year is progressing and continues to be ahead of schedule. The following are items currently ongoing or have been completed: • Epoxy flooring in all areas

We Built Five New Playgrounds and Finished the Lazy River Island at Pelican Harbor

Visitors to Pelican Harbor will enjoy this beautiful path to the renovated lazy river island.

Enjoy the new outdoor fitness station and playground at Remington Lakes Sports Complex (811 Remington Blvd.).

The new playground at Indian Boundary Park (990 W. Boughton Rd.) opened in August and has four elevated play features.

The new Indian Chase Meadows (525 Pheasant Chase Dr.) playground has 19 ground level activities for kids ages 5-12 years.

The new playground Central Park (201 Recreation Dr.) is complete with two custom structures and 13 different activities to choose from.

Zoe Mackaluso (age 7) ___________________________ After a summer of spending time outside on their new trampoline, Christy and Mike Mackaluso jumped on the opportunity to enroll their kids in park district programming when the State of Illinois’ Restore Illinois Plan allowed for it. Zoe, age 7, participated in day camp and gymnastics while Luke, age 4, took the Micro Soccer class.

The Mackaluso’s have been residents of Bolingbrook for nine years and are no strangers to park district programming. Zoe has been with gymnastics since she was in preschool and has participated in swim lessons, and Camp Connections Day Camp this summer. Luke has also done swim lessons and the parent/tot gymnastics class.

“The programs keep them active, get them

to interact with different people and burn some energy,” said Christy.

When the State of Illinois entered Phase III of the Restore Illinois Plan, it allowed for gymnastics to start up again. Knowing the protocols set in place by the park district, Christy saw no issues with signing up her daughter for class.

“I personally felt comfortable,” said Christy.

“They wear masks when they’re warming up and when they’re next to people. We’ve been coming here for so long and I’ve been comfortable with the cleaning procedures.”

In addition to wearing masks during warm ups, instructors in all program areas are required to wear masks during the entirely of the program and clean between each session. To see more safety protocols, visit www.bolingbrookparks.org/safety.

Throughout the 25-year history of Lifestyles Fitness Center, one thing has remained the same – making fitness fun. As the needs of the community have changed, so has Lifestyles. Meet Our Staff !

Ron Oestreich, Executive Director Ron is entering his 25th year as a member of the Bolingbrook Park District team. He started in March of 1996 when he was hired as the Aquatic Manager. His responsibilities

included managing the final few months of the wave pool and opening Pelican Harbor Indoor/Outdoor Aquatic Park in June of 1996. In January of 2000, he moved into the role of Superintendent of Revenue Facilities where he oversaw the fitness, aquatics, golf, and restaurant operations. He was in that position until 2012, when he then was hired as the district’s Executive Director.

His main responsibilities are to directly oversee all department heads that manage the day-to-day operations of Bolingbrook Park District. He is the liaison between the Board of Commissioners and staff, serves on the Finance Committee, which manages the budget, finance, and investments, and indirectly oversees the Human Resources and Capital Improvement Project operations. He also oversees the production of the monthly board, quarterly, annual, and financial reports.

Education Background: • Graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1991 with a degree in Recreation Administration

He and his wife, Christy and their four kids have lived in Bolingbrook for the past six years after living in Romeoville for 15 years.

Bolingbrook Park District has partnered with Meijer of Bolingbrook to provide free family-focused nature programs at Hidden Oaks Nature Center.

The next program on Friday, January 29 is the Hot Chocolate Hike from 6:00-7:00 pm.

Attendees will learn about the moon and winter constellations through activities and stories with some hot chocolate.

Bolingbrook Park District Awarded $500,000 Grant for Hidden Lakes Improvements

_______________________________ It was announced in November that Bolingbrook Park District will be the recipient of a $505,700 grant to build an outdoor educational pavilion at Hidden Lakes Historic Trout Farm (475 Trout Farm Rd.). The park district applied for the grant earlier this year and was one of 43 Illinois

museums to receive part of the $22.8 million in state capital investments.

The project includes the demolition and removal of the existing Tackle Box Bait Shop and construction a 26’ x 40’ wood pavilion.

This will feature space for concessions, drinking water, restrooms, a covered area with picnic tables, a new accessible outdoor classroom area, and space for nature-based programming.

“This is a great bonus for our community and the district,” said Ron Oestreich, executive director. “This project checks a lot of boxes that community members have been asking for at Hidden Lakes and we’re happy to be able to provide this for everyone.”

When you drive on I-55, you’ll see the newest addition to Bolingbrook Park District – an 80’ flag pole on Frontage Rd. by the Annerino Community Center. This project took shape thanks to the vision of our Executive Director, Ron Oestreich. With his efforts working with the Foundation for Bolingbrook Parks, the entire project was donated, leaving no costs to the taxpayers of Bolingbrook. This included the pole, flags, concrete, electrical, and crane services.
