Helpful Holiday Health Tips

The most wonderful time of the year is here! Bring on the baking and parties with friends and family. Too many times it is also a time to add a few extra inches to the waist. Our Lifestyles Fitness Center team has some tips to hopefully help you eliminate Stick to your routine as much as possible. Consistency is key to keeping up good habits and maintaining a healthy weight throughout the holiday season. But if you can’t… Squeeze in a workout whenever you can. If you can’t make it to the gym, sneak in a quick 10 minute walk, do push-ups on the kitchen counter while you’re making dinner, or park farther away. Mall walking while holiday shopping counts as activity too! Sneak in extra bits of activity anywhere you can —every little bit adds up! Eat only the foods you love Pick 2–3 of your favorite holiday treats and enjoy them! Practice mindful eating by chewing slowly and savoring those special foods that we only get this time of the year. If you’re offered something that you don’t like, don’t feel obliged to eat it.

Thank you to the community partners who participated in Freak Fun Friday, including: Meijer, The Village of Bolingbrook, The Candy Shoppe, Grove Dental, NWCSRA, and our park district staff and families. Special shout-out to our decoration contest winner - the Selep family!

keep you fuller longer, but will also aid with digestion and help you to consume less calories overall.

Plan your day Avoid temptations on a busy day of errands by packing a healthy snack. Almonds, a small piece of fruit or protein bars are easy to carry and can keep you fueled up until meal time. Stay hydrated Sometimes your body thinks it’s hungry but it’s really just thirsty. Try drinking a glass of water before each meal. Not only will it

Remember, it’s a holiDAY Indulge for the day, not the entire season. When the party’s over, don’t let the treats linger. Send leftovers home with friends and family or take them to work and leave in the break room. Take time to enjoy this time of year Hit the trails for a brisk walk in the cool air and soak in all the positive things in your life. We wish a very happy, healthy Holiday season and look forward to seeing everyone in 2024.

a letter from the executive director

On behalf of the Board and Staff of Bolingbrook Park District, thank you for partnering with us in our constant pursuit to be the place where Bolingbrook finds the fun! In 2018, Bolingbrook residents demonstrated support for the Park District by approving a referendum to fund a five-year plan to provide improvements throughout our system of parks, pathways and facilities. We are proud to report that we have delivered on all items from our plan. The result has been a positive impact on residents throughout the community. According to Park District Board President Jerry Hix, “The Board of Commissioners is very proud of delivering high quality projects that fulfill the promises made during the referendum cycle. We very much appreciate the resounding confidence in the Bolingbrook Park District reflected in the 62% voter approval of the referendum question.” We concluded the plan this year by updating Balstrode and Erickson playgrounds, which were the last of 21 playgrounds throughout Bolingbrook updated as a part of the plan. Here are a few of the other items accomplished from the plan: •

At the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Center (BRAC) a new entrance, program rooms, family changing rooms, locker room improvements, and water park lazy river enhancements were completed.

Completed bridge and pathway construction connecting existing trails on Lily Cache Greenway in the Weber and Hassert Road area through Bradford and Drafke Parks.

Purchase of critical equipment to support operations including new pumps, fitness equipment, trucks, tractors, mowers, paving, roofing and HVAC units.

I am extremely proud of this dedicated Bolingbrook Park District team for accomplishing all of this during the most challenging of times. To say that a lot has happened in the world since 2018 is an understatement. Throughout all that has transpired, the support from our residents and Bolingbrook agencies has helped propel our Board and Staff forward to accomplish this plan. 2023 has been a spectacular year at the Bolingbrook Park District as many residents and visitors alike have found the fun with us. We have witnessed so many smiles during the past year, that we cannot possibly keep up. What’s incredible is that in 2023 we have experienced record numbers of attendees at Pelican Harbor, continued strong golf participation at Boughton Ridge, increased use of Lifestyles Fitness Center, as well as enhanced participation numbers in all areas of recreation programming. We are not resting on the accomplishments of these past several years. We have a great plan of programs and activities in store for you in 2024. Keep in mind that not every program is for everyone, but there is something for everyone here at the Park District! Don’t miss our annual Winterfest scheduled for Saturday, February 3rd from 11am-2pm! Look for information for this fun outdoor winter event in the brochure or online at www. bolingbrookparks.org. Thank you for your continued support of your Bolingbrook Park District programs, services, parks, and natural areas. May your 2024 be filled with joy and happiness. We look forward to serving you!

The 2019–2023 referendum projects have been completed!

As responsible stewards of your tax dollars, we developed a schedule and plan for the projects you entrusted us with. All projects were completed. The one positive of the pandemic was we were able to complete the renovation of the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex with minimal disruption. Feedback on the new locker room structure, the addition of family changing rooms and our new multipurpose room has been overwhelmingly positive.

hank you, Bolingrook residents! In 2018, you approved Bolingbrook Park District’s request for $14 million to make improvements throughout the community over the next five years. We are so excited to share that all the projects have been completed. We’d like to thank every member of the Park District community for your continued support as we navigated these projects even through a pandemic.

4 We make the fun happen!

As we all struggled to get through the pandemic in 2020, the availability of safe playgrounds was imperative to the community. Over the last five years, we have replaced 21 aging playgrounds throughout the community. These playgrounds proved to be an important asset to the community. The District is continuing to replace playgrounds as we move into 2024 with the assistance from grant funding received by Representative Yang Rohr (41st District). Look for details in the new year. Another completed project that was vital for connecting existing trails was the construction of the bridge over Lily Cache Creek. We love seeing our community use and appreciate this bridge

while they use our trails. A second bridge was constructed that had a huge impact for the District. This bridge was constructed over Pelican Harbor’s lazy river to provide access and additional recreation space in the center of the lazy river. A new pavilion and picnic tables have served host to many parties and family gatherings all made possible with the addition of the bridge.

While completing the proposed timeline for the referendum projects, we never knew one of the most challenging projects would be the replacement of trucks. The pandemic provided our team many challenges to overcome as lead times and accessibility to materials were scarce. As the auto industry struggled to have vehicles available, we definitely felt that pain as the replacement vehicles took well over a year to obtain. During these challenging times, we also experienced many bright spots. Replacement of the Remington Park lighting was an important project on the referendum plan. Our team was able to not only replace the

In today’s world, where obesity has become a global epidemic, achieving, and maintaining a healthy weight is more crucial than ever. While lifestyle modifications, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, behavior modification such as decreasing stress and avoiding unhealthy triggers, as well as a strong support system, remain the cornerstone of weight management, medical interventions, both surgical and nonsurgical, offer valuable options for individuals struggling to shed excess pounds and improve their overall health.
