February is American Heart Month and it is a great time to commit to a healthy lifestyle and make small changes that can lead to a lifetime of heart health. The Lifestyles Fitness team is committed to making fitness fun, so we are hosting our annual Rockin’ Red Zumba Party on Friday, February 18th from 6:00-8:00 pm

at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex. Advance registration is $9 or $7 for Lifestyles members. Day of registration is $15 for both members and non-members. I hope you enjoyed the holiday season. Winter is here and so is the cold. Well, Bolingbrook Park District is excited to warm your spirits!

Our capital improvement (referendum implementation) plan will continue in 2022. Can you believe we are entering our fourth year of projects? You will see new playgrounds at Bradford, Community, Freedom, Sunset, and Winston Woods, along with a brand-new playground at the DuPage River Greenway Trailhead at Royce Road and Concord Lane. After this year, we only have 5 more playgrounds to replace to hit our promised 21.

As for other news, I invite you to check out our awesome new website, www. bolingbrookparks.org. This new site provides more opportunity to learn about Bolingbrook Park District’s history, programs, facilities, services, amenities, and of course program registration.

2022 Brings a Year Fi _______________________________

A

A key piece of the Bolingbrook Park District mission is to ensure that we are able to offer quality park and recreation services to the residents of Bolingbrook in a fiscally responsible manner for many years to come.

In order to do that, it is important that we are able to maintain our facilities and parks.

During the budget process, we carefully plan for important projects as part of our capital improvement plan. The following are projects that are planned for this year.

Freedom Park Playground Replacement This is the replacement of 21-yearold playground equipment as part of the referendum implementation plan.

Equipment will be replaced with Burke equipment. The playground is anticipated to start in April with completion in the summer.

New Ninja Course at Freedom Park This is a new amenity to the Bolingbrook Park District. The existing sand volleyball court is planned to be removed where the new Ninja Course will be added. The equipment is being added with Burke equipment. The Ninja Course is anticipated to start in April with completion in the summer.

Sunset Park Playground Replacement This is the replacement of 21-yearold playground equipment as part of the referendum implementation plan.

Equipment will be replaced with Burke equipment. The playground is anticipated to start in April with completion in the summer.

Bradford Park Playground Replacement This is the replacement of 20-yearold playground equipment as part of the referendum implementation plan.

Equipment will be replaced with Landscape Structures equipment. The playground is anticipated to start in April with completion in the summer.

One of the project highlights of 2021 was the installation of the bridge connecting existing trails Road area through Bradford and Drafke Parks.

Community Park Playground Replacement

New Playground at Dupage River Greenway at Royce Road

This is the replacement of 22-yearold playground equipment as part of the referendum implementation plan.

Equipment will be replaced with Landscape Structures equipment. The playground is anticipated to start in April with completion in the summer.

This is a new playground to be added at the Dupage River Greenway trail head at Royce Road. Park District staff will be performing the installation of the new equipment manufactured by Gametime. The project is anticipated to be complete by Fall 2022.

Winston Woods Park Playground Replacement This is the replacement of 23-yearold playground equipment as part of the referendum implementation plan.

Equipment will be replaced with Landscape Structures equipment. The playground is anticipated to start in April with completion in the summer.

Sealcoating 2022 This project includes sealcoating District property around town, along with adding pickleball court lines to Ivanhoe Park. This is an annual project the District performs to maintain 18 miles of asphalt trails and over 1 million square feet of parking lot throughout the entire District. Work is scheduled to take place starting Spring and continue through early Fall.

BRAC Gymnasium Complete Floor Refinishing This project is a complete sand of the existing 35-year old original gym floor and a fresh lining of all sport courts with new seal.

Any existing floor concerns will be addressed during this time. The project is anticipated to start following the conclusion of Camp Alotta Fun in August with completion in early-September.

ACC Server Room Air Conditioning Units Replacement This is the replacement of air conditioning units that service the District’s servers.

Replacement will conclude by Fall 2022.

Sport Courts Resurfaced Sport Courts at both Indian Boundary and Indian Chase Meadows are scheduled to be resurfaced. The project will begin possibly as early as late-Spring with completion by Fall.

Remington Lakes Sports Complex Lighting Replacement This lighting project includes replacement of the 28-year old existing original lights with new LED lights. This important project allows for programming of lights through smart devices to ensure we are as efficient as possible with the timing of our lights. Being a part of a strong community is more important than ever. Bolingbrook Park District is passionate about bringing the community together and so is Meijer.

Meijer is always looking to make a positive impact and engage in the community in which their employees live and work. It has locations in Bolingbrook at 755 E. Boughton Road and 225 N. Weber Road. This unified spirit community togetherness has brought the two organizations together to provide free family-focused community programs throughout 2022.

“We have been offering smaller community programs over the past two years due to COVID restrictions,” said John Chase, Superintendent of Facilities. “The response has been great. We are able to offer a variety of programs serving a variety of interest. This is all possible because of the support Meijer has provided us.”

These free community programs range from Family Game Night to Flashlight Egg Hunt and Wiffle Ball Home Run Derby.

“The purpose of these programs is the allow families and friends to come together and try something they haven’t done before, meet your neighbors and just have some fun,” said Chase.

Tricia Dubiel

Superintendent of Business & Finance

Tricia Dubiel joined the Bolingbrook Park District team in 2013 when she was hired to lead the District’s business office operations. Tricia brought more than ten years of professional accounting and finance experience to the District, seven of those years in governmental finance. She accepted her first park district position with the Wheaton Park District in May 2008. This is when her passion for accounting leadership was enhanced with a dedication to public

service and good stewardship to the citizens of the communities she serves. She has progressively advanced positions from Assistant Finance Director at Wheaton Park District to Superintendent of Business and Finance at Bolingbrook Park District.

“There is something special about park districts. They are a destination for the community, a place where you go to have FUN,” said Dubiel. “I love walking through the facilities and seeing our guests making memories that will last a lifetime knowing that I play a role in making it all happen.

Park District team members have passion about the work they do, the community and guests they serve. I feel fortunate to be a part of this amazing team.”

Professionally the challenge and excitement of working with a variety of business operations keeps Tricia’s job interesting. “From an aquatic center to a fitness center, preschool, gymnasium, golf course, and so much more, my business office team encounters new situations regularly. It keeps us challenged and seeking the most efficient and effective ways to handle the park district’s business,” said Dubiel.

Tricia manages the accounting and financial resource functions of the District including accounting, auditing, financial reporting, tax compliance, cashflow and investments. She serves on the Finance Committee which establishes and maintains financial policies, manages the budget, and drives forward resource planning. Tricia oversees the business office team who handles the accounting, processing and reporting compilations for all financial transactions including payroll, accounts payable and cash receipts.

Tricia has been an active member of the Illinois Government Finance Officers Association for sixteen years expanding her professional network, knowledge and experience by serving on boards, committees and task forces. She recently partnered with another member to successfully develop and lead a roundtable group which is focused on meeting the needs of park district members. This roundtable has been a success and is getting ready to celebrate the second anniversary of quality presentations and discussions.

Winter is coming. Well, actually, it’s been here for quite some time. We just haven’t noticed much snow. (Knock on wood). When a snow storm finally decides to show itself, our Buildings and Grounds team will be ready. “Every year in October or November we have a snow meeting to go over everything that we need to do as a refresher for the team,” said Ken McEwen, Parks Maintenance Manager.

So how does our grounds crew prepare for a snow storm? “My wife knows that when it’s my snow week, I will be watching the weather all of the time. If a storm is predicted, what we’ll do is go out a day or two ahead of time to brine. This is a pre-treatment where we lay down the beet juice in all of the parking lots at facilities.

Then we’ll get all the salt loaded up in the trucks and the plows ready to go. We get the trucks cleaned, fueled up and make sure that they’re functioning optimally,” said McEwen.

What exactly is brine? It consists of 23% salt water and beet juice. That’s what causes the odor in our parking lots and walkways

leading to the entrances of our buildings. ”If it’s a light snow, perhaps an inch or less, the brine can take care of it,” said McEwen.

“If we’re expecting a heavier snow, we do all of the main facilities first. We figure out when the snow is expected to hit. If it’s during the day when there’s programming going on, it’s a lot more challenging because there are a lot more cars and people walking through the parking lots.

If the snow falls at night when the building are closed, we just let it fall and then hit it in the morning with our early morning crew starting at 3:00 am. The order of priority is to take care of the facilities first, areas leading to schools, then parks and trails.”

One interesting fact about Ken is that he loves snow. “Everyone makes fun of me because of that. I especially like the early mornings when no one is out.

That’s the best time to be out plowing. It’s peaceful. I like to roll down the window, turn the music on and just go. I get to be a kid again, playing with equipment and pushing around snow. I can’t complain!” said McEwen.

In case you didn’t know, Ashbury’s at Boughton Ridge has been under new leadership for the past several months. Meet Bruce Hutcheon, General Manager. Bruce has been working in the hospitality industry for his entire career. He has been a chef and food and beverage director in hotels all over the country, working in major cities such as Boston, San Francisco, New Orleans, Indianapolis, Kansas City and Chicago.

“My favorite thing about working at Ashbury’s is the fact that I get to be creative.

I rewrote the banquet and restaurant menus and I’m looking to add more menu items that are homemade. Things that we’d make ourselves that maybe you wouldn’t see on everybody else’s menu – stews, hearty soups, casseroles and slow-cooked dishes,” said Hutcheon. “Among our events, Wine Tasting has been very popular and will continue throughout 2022 along with Supper Clubs and Comedy Nights. I’m looking to add new events, such as Murder Mystery Dinner and Paint & Sip, where people can come out for an activity, not just a good meal.”

Frank McKay Replaces Christian Cairy as Bolingbrook Park District Commissioner

Christian Cairy was elected as Bolingbrook Park District Commissioner in April 2021.

Christian’s career ended up moving him and his family out of state, leaving an opening on the Bolingbrook Park District board. After an open call for residents interested in serving on the board and multiple interviews, the

Board of Commissioners selected longtime resident, Frank McKay, to step in as Christian’s replacement.

“It is a great honor to serve as a Bolingbrook Park District commissioner.

I have lived and volunteered in this community for 30 years. The park district fits well with my passion to provide opportunities for our youth,” said McKay. Frank has served as board member for

the Bolingbrook Tee Ball Association for over 6 years. He also served as a coach and the Vice President of the Bolingbrook Youth Baseball League (BYBL) for over 10 years. He volunteered as a head coach for Bolingbrook Soccer Club, Bolingbrook Panthers Girls Basketball and Volleyball for five years. As his kids got older, he served as a member of the Bolingbrook High School Athletic Boosters Club for six years. Frank also honed his video experience as a volunteer for BCT6. If that isn’t enough, Frank has been a certified IHSA Baseball and Basketball official working games for over 26 years.

In his professional life, he has been the President and owner of LOCis Inc. for over 34 years. His company provides financial and utility billing software to over 270 communities in Illinois. Prior to that, he was the Vice-President of Finance for RELCO based out of Joliet/Minooka.

Frank’s wife, Melony, is a retired teacher from Valley View School District. Frank and Melony have two children. Their daughter, Kimberly, just graduated from Lakeland University in December with a degree in Criminal Justice. Their son, Joseph, is a high school teacher and baseball coach at Westside High School in Omaha while his wife, Lauren, is working on her Doctorate degree in pharmacy at Creighton University.
