3 Generations of Parkie’s 5K Runners

Chandler and Niara Chandler, finished again in our annual Parkie’s 5K Race on Saturday, August 27, 2022. These three generations of Langston ladies have run the race at every opportunity over the last 6 years.

Ms. Gloria tells us the tradition started as an item on her bucket list. She sought, with assistance from Bolingbrook Park District personal trainers, to build up her strength and stamina until she reached her goal. It is now a family tradition.

These long time Bolingbrook residents shared that they have enjoyed growing up and raising their families with the support of the District’s services and programs. Bolingbrook Park District thanks you, Gloria and family, for being awesome! See you next year!

Fall Events at F

Fall, for many of us, is our preferred season due to a myriad of reasons. We may view fall as a time for a fresh start because it coincides with the start of a new school year. The entrance of cooler weather opens up the doors for fall fashion which is much more diverse than summer wear. Fall brings about breathtaking colors of the changing leaves, the pleasing smell of a warm firepit and the aroma of fresh baked cornbread. Which brings us to another favorite aspect of autumn… the ushering in of holiday food! Are you dreaming of pumpkin lattes, fresh baked cornbread, caramel apples, turkey, pot roast, mashed potatoes, Halloween treats and apple cider donuts? If so, Lifestyles has you covered with free workouts, monthly challenges and more to help burn those extra calories.

a dry mouth or lessen the metallic taste from medication,” suggests Dr. Yemul.

• Amazon gift cards so she can shop from home.

RReceiving a shocking breast cancer diagnosis disrupts a woman’s life in countless ways, but it shouldn’t change her friendships. “If anything, going through this life-changing journey should make the bonds between friends even stronger,” says Madhuri Yemul, MD, a primary care physician with AdventHealth Medical Group in Bolingbrook. If you have a friend with breast cancer, here are five ways you can help strengthen your friendship bond.

1. Listen – let her freely express her fears and concerns. Resist the urge to fill any silences and to offer unsolicited advice. Your friend needs a shoulder to lean on, which isn’t the same as wanting you to solve her problems. Let her know you’ll be by her side for the long haul, not just in the early stages,

2. Offer Specific Help – Dr. Yemul says, “The classic response to people in crisis is, ‘Let me know if you need anything,’ but that open-ended statement isn’t very helpful.” Instead, try offering to help with specific tasks, such as:

• Buying groceries

• Organizing meals

• Cleaning the house or doing yard work

• Picking up prescriptions

• Driving kids to activities

• Pet care

Talk to her caregiver or spouse for input on more ways to help. Cancer treatment is a journey the whole family takes.

3. Give Her Thoughtful Gifts/Cards –little gifts or notes go a long way toward brightening someone’s day.

• Care packages - “When undergoing treatment, include items like lip balm, tissues, lotion and hard candy to relieve

• Magazines, books, a journal, notebooks with pockets to keep track of information.

• Colorful, fun socks, scarves, hat, pajamas, robe.

• Pictures of friends, cute water bottles.

4. Be a “Chemo” Buddy – driving her to and from, as well as video chatting with her during chemotherapy or radiation therapy treatments. Your friend will appreciate the company and encouragement, and it can give her caregiver a break.

5. Video Call, Visit and Include Her in Activities – make plans to connect with your friend on a video call or visit in person to cheer her up at home and give her something to look forward to. Talk about something other than cancer - ask for her advice on something you’re managing; share news about work, school or the

friendship is enough. More than any task you can carry out on your friend’s behalf, it’s your love she needs the most. Dr. Yemul adds, “Helping her feel supported and strong through her breast cancer journey is everything she needs to succeed.”

Meet Our Staff!

Christopher Piasecki

Fitness & Facility Manager at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex

Chris Piasecki started his career with the Bolingbrook Park District in 2014 as part-time support staff for the athletics department. Chris worked full-time for the Oak Brook Park District, but quickly became an important part of the athletics team on the evenings and weekends. It did not take long for him to move into the full-time roll of Program Services Manager in March of 2016 where he oversaw the Bolingbrook Athletic Council partnership, youth athletics, and wall/train special events. Soon after assuming his full-time roll he transitioned again to become the Fitness and Facility Manager at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex.

“Bolingbrook was always on my radar as a place I’d love to work. I played in softball leagues at the park district and built some relationships with staff. Bolingbrook is an amazing place to work for, the patrons are great and the team that we have here works so strongly together,” said Piasecki. “When

people come to where I work, they are having fun! Over the seven years I have been here, I have built strong relationships that I am thankful for.”

Chris’ passion for recreation began at an early age while participating in sports. “I knew from an early age that parks and recreation would be where I wound up. Playing sports in my early years through high school was always my passion. When I went to college I knew I wanted to be in a field that involved recreation management,” said Piasecki. He received his bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management from Illinois State University.

Chris loves to share his passion for sports with his three daughters whether it is coaching their soccer team or just supporting them while they enjoy their favorite sport. He is a die hard Chicago Cubs fan who loved every minute of their World Series Championship. Chris has also enjoyed personal success bowling a 300 game in 2021.

Chris can reached at cpiasecki@ bolingbrookparks.org or (630) 783-6642.
