FOR YOUR
TRUST & SUPP Referendum Projects Update
T Thank you, voters! The Bolingbrook Park District Bol referendum request for $14 million was approved this past November. We’d like to thank every member of the Park District community for your continued support. From our survey responses and focus group participation to the ballots cast, your voices were heard and we thank you for your trust and support.
As responsible stewards of your tax dollars, we have developed a schedule and plan for the projects you entrusted us with. The goal was to develop a schedule that will minimize disruption of regular park district activity during the completion of these projects. The timeline below details the major activities planned in relation to the projects. A more detailed schedule of activities can be found at
www.bolingbrookparks. org/referendum. A historical reference of all documents from the referendum ask, the preliminary referendum delivery plan and future updates on progress will remain on this site for residents to reference JIKS \W W^MZ \PM VM`\ Å^M aMIZ[ as projects are completed. A Career of Orchestrating Open Spaces for Recreation Conductor Jim Patula
By Justin Waters
A conductor of orchestra normally stands with their back to the audience. They know every note that each instrument plays, when they’re supposed to play it and how it works in the overall sound of the orchestra. Their face is rarely seen, but the audience knows that they’re there. They can hear and see all of the movement as a result, but what leads to that point is the hard work and careful planning of the conductor. To Bolingbrook Park District, that person for the last 30 years has been Jim Patula. In 1990, Bolingbrook began to see immense growth. The population grew from 41,000 to over 75,000 in just 18 years. In that time, Bolingbrook Park District saw exponential growth of its own. Behind all of it, stands Jim Patula, Superintendent of Parks, Planning & Loss

At the time, most playgrounds were just iron/pipe work equipment in the lawn or in a sand lot area. Rotary Park raised the bar for parks in Bolingbrook by adding accessibility features for those with disabilities, had safety surfacing and was the largest playground in town.
Of those 47 new playgrounds, Rotary Park holds a special place in Jim’s heart.

every person, critter, or creature that has walked through the doors in its 10-year history. After you visit Paddlefoot, she’s your next stop. Faith joined the team after seeing an advertisement in the local paper for a receptionist at the nature center. She has kids of her own that grew up in Bolingbrook experiencing nature. It only made sense to her to give back to the community and give other people the opportunity to bring their kids into nature just as she did. “This was the job I was always meant to do. I feel it’s important for kids to get fresh air and that
they learn respect for creatures, land, and other people,” said Faith. The story of Hidden Oaks Nature Center didn’t start when it opened in 2009. It took a good 20-something years to acquire the land. Things didn’t really take shape until November of 2008 when the Will County Forrest Preserve presented the Bolingbrook Park District Board of Commissioners a check for $2.2 million to purchase the land. Even with that, it was only enough to buy the land. Funding came from places
like the Open Space Lands Acquisition & Development Grant for $389,000, the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity for $250,000 and so on. The contributions started to stack up so much that of the $5 million that it cost to build the facility, $4 million of it was funded through various grants. Then the fun began. If these stewards are anything like Faith Gebert, the future of Hidden Oaks Nature Center is as bright as the sun, or 4 trillion 100-watt light bulbs.
• 20 oak trees were removed to build the nature center. Those trees were then used as support beams and can be seen inside of the nature center. • The building is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified. • There are “Ghost Sculptures” that are statues constructed from steel scrap pieces. There’s a mammoth, a shark and a group of Fox Native Americans. Go find them! • Recent additions to the center include a pavilion, picnic area, boardwalk and sensory gardens.

If you see bees out in nature,
DON’T FREAK OUT! (Unless it’s as big as the bee on this page. If it is, run for the hills!)
Let them do their thing and they’ll leave you alone. Odds are, they’re gathering the proper materials to make the delicious honey that we sell. That,, and se db bees ee es are vital v tal to the vi t life cycle of most plants and flowers. They carry pollen from plant to plant, allowing them to reproduce. If you’re really into bees, Hidden Oaks Conservation Area is home to bee hives to help educate visitors on the benefits of bees. During the summer, there can be more than 10,000 bees that call these hives home. But no need to fear, bees are not aggressive unless provoked.
