Christmas wishes
F
uel shortages, supply chain issues and red tape caused by Brexit are all having a damaging effect on retail. But as we approach Christmas, there’s still an air of optimism about the trading period ahead. According to research, shoppers have an estimated £200 billion in accumulated lockdown savings – and they want to spend it this Christmas. With the nation missing parties and gatherings last year, there’s pent-up demand for sparkly dresses and party heels. And this, of course, is great news for fashion indies. If you haven’t finalised your preparations for the festive period, you’re in the right place. From making the most of this year’s Small Business Saturday to revising your online delivery strategy, we’ve got some great ideas on how to make this Christmas a success on page 43. Meanwhile, we also speak to three leading womenswear indies in our Shop Talk section (page 49) to find out how they’re tackling this year’s party season. Of course, planning a successful Christmas period starts with stocking products your customers want to buy. Bira CEO Andrew Goodacre is urging retailers to finalise their stock early and start marketing now: “It’s likely that Christmas shopping may start earlier than usual, especially if difficulties in the supply chain continues.” (Read more on page 10-12). So, if you haven’t already earmarked all of your short-order budget, we’ve
got some great partywear ideas over on page 23. We’ve also hunted down some covetable gift ideas for all ages and tastes starting on page 30. Finally, the wait is almost over for the results of the government’s Fundamental Review into business rates. It is hoped that this month’s Autumn Statement will bring good news for the industry after the British Retail Consortium found that many businesses will collapse if rates aren’t reduced soon (page 10-12). Bira is urging indies to write to their MPs this month to express their concerns and has created a template letter that can be downloaded from its website. Let’s hope retail gets the break it needs this Christmas. Gemma Ward, Editor

ESSENTIAL NEWS FOR FASHION INDIES
VICTORIA REX-LEES (CENTRE) AND TEAM
Hertford independent The Women’s Society Boutique celebrates 15 years in business
H
ertford-based womenswear independent The Women’s Society Boutique celebrated 15 years in business last month with two in-store shopping events. The first was a private party for its most loyal customers, who were given exclusive access to the launch of its AW21 collections alongside a discount and goody bag when they spent over £150. The store also hosted a two-day shopping event, offering customers a 15 per cent discount across its entire range. Former fashion buyer Victoria Rex-Lees co-founded the business in 2006, eventually buying out her partner eight years later. Today The Women’s Society Boutique stocks a range of high-end womenswear labels, with curated collections
from the likes of Essentiel Antwerp, Fabienne Chapot, Pyrus, Soaked in Luxury and Yaya. “The private shopping event was a really lovely and successful day,” she says. “The changing rooms were absolutely packed, and it finally felt like the old days. Our customers have really missed being able to shop in-person without a mask. They want to try on clothes and see what they look like and they want to speak to us properly. The easing of covid restrictions has really helped sales.” Earlier this year the boutique was named one of the Top 50 Independents in the UK by Grazia magazine, which helped to drive awareness nationally and increase its e-commerce sales. During the lockdowns, shoppers were able to choose home delivery options
from Trouva and the store’s website (womens-society.co.uk), with RexLees making local deliveries in her car with a newborn baby in tow. “We spent our thirteenth birthday in lockdown, so we’re so pleased to be through to the other side and celebrating 15 years in business,” she says. “A lot has changed over the past 15 years and retail is completely different. It’s a tough industry, but it’s also very rewarding.” Looking ahead, Rex-Lees says she is very optimistic about next spring and hopes to be able to grow the business. “I feel lucky that we are located in such an affluent area,” she says. “We have lots of new customers as there’s been an influx of people moving here from London, so I’ll be working on maintaining those and giving them an exceptional experience.” OCTOBER 2021 | boutique. | 9

Clothing sales rise in August as retail sales overall decline According to the latest ONS retail sales figures, clothing was the only category to experience a sales increase in August, with volumes rising by 0.7 per cent. Retail sales fell by 0.9 per cent overall compared to the previous month, following a 2.8 per cent decline in July. However, volumes were up by 0.3 per cent in the three months to August compared to the previous three months while sales were up by 4.6 per cent compared to February 2020. Supply chain issues were hitting retailers in August, with 6.5 per cent reporting they were not able to access the materials, goods or services needed from within the UK. Department stores were hit the hardest at 18.2 per cent followed by clothing retailers at 11.1 per cent. Meanwhile, another 11.1 per cent of clothing retailers said they were able to obtain stock and materials needed but had to “change suppliers or find alternatives.”

Government urged to overhaul “broken business rates system” Most UK retailers (83 per cent) say they could collapse if business rates are not reduced, warns the British Retail Consortium (BRC). The findings, taken from its new Retail, Rates and Recovery report published last month, highlight the need for immediate action from the government. A total of 85 per cent of retailers say that rates are a key issue for their business while another 25 per cent say they pay more for the tax than rent. The government announced a Fundamental Review into business rates in 2020, with the final report expected to be unveiled this month as part of the Autumn Statement. BCR recommends that rates are cut by 35 per cent and that the government fixes the transitional relief system, which cost retailers 10 | boutique. | OCTOBER 2021
over £500m between 2017 and 2020. It is also calling for the government to introduce an Improvement Relief to ensure rates bills don’t rise immediately after property investment as well as a reform of the Valuation Office Agency. Bira, meanwhile, is urging indies to contact their local MPs to express their concerns about rates and has created a template letter that can be downloaded on its website (bira.co.uk.) Helen Dickinson, chief executive at the BRC, comments: “This report underscores the urgency of fixing the broken business rates system. With one in seven shops currently shuttered, it is essential that action is taken, or else it will be our local communities and high streets that suffer the consequences.”
Start Christmas marketing early, says Bira CEO Bira is urging indies to finalise their Christmas strategies earlier than usual to help overcome potential supply chain issues. CEO Andrew Goodacre says that businesses will need to plan ahead for this year’s festive season, particularly in terms of stock. “The real challenge for the retailer is the supply chain and ensuring that the stock is available at the right time - so look to buy stock now and start the marketing for the festive period now,” he says. “It is likely that Christmas shopping may start earlier than usual, especially if the difficulties in the supply chains continue.” The association warned indies about potential supply chain issues back in August, when Goodacre said: “We have been hearing about concerns regarding deliveries due to a shortage drivers. At the moment, the focus has been on ensuring food supplies are maintained. However, as the shortage of drivers is unlikely to be resolved in the near future, I would urge non-food independent retailers to consider their supply chain in the run up to the busy Christmas period.”

Young Ideas named Drapers’ Womenswear Independent of the Year Derbyshire indie group Young Ideas was crowned Womenswear Independent of the Year at last month’s Drapers Independents Awards. The awards were held at the Hilton London Bankside with attendees including former British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman. Retailers and brands battled it out for a chance to win 18 different awards, with categories including Rising Star, Best New Retailer and The Covid Community Champion Award. Drapers says the awards “recognise the fashion retailers and brands that have innovated to survive, supported their local communities, and built stronger businesses under the toughest of circumstances.”

DOWN TO BUSINESS
12 ways of Christmas
HEIDI FIN ON UNSPLASH
SUPPLY CHAIN ISSUES, BREXIT AND THE PANDEMIC ARE SET TO CREATE A CHRISTMAS PERIOD LIKE NO OTHER. HERE’S HOW RETAILERS CAN MAXIMISE PROFITS AND SALES
1. Buy early, sell early
Traditionally, retailers have avoided unveiling their Christmas products too early. But it’s 2021, we’re still in a pandemic, and tradition has gone out of the window. According to research, Brits have been preparing for Christmas unseasonably early as they look forward to making this year extra special. Bira has been urging buyers to finalise their festive stock plans since August and is advising indies to begin their marketing now: “Given the problems faced by non-essential retailers in the past 18 months (and let’s not forget they were closed all of November last year), this is the 44 | boutique. | OCTOBER 2021
most important festive period ever,” says CEO Andrew Goodacre. “It would be a tragedy if supply problems undermined the independent retailers at the busiest time of the year. So, look to buy stock now and start the marketing for the festive period now.”
2. Unify online with offline
To be able to compete this year, retailers must strike a balance between the online and offline worlds. The pandemic has helped consumers of all ages get on board with new technology. So now retailers need to make sure they deliver what they want, when they want it: “While some
shoppers will be demanding a fast one-click purchase online, there will also be those wanting to view, try on and test products before they purchase in real life,” says Pecoraro. “To bridge the gap, an omni-channel approach based on experimentalism is needed, with offerings such as buy online pick-up-in-store models (BOPIS) or buy online, ship-from-store acting as a key differentiator. Taking learnings from last year, retailers that pre-emptively invested in omni-channel capabilities fared much better during peak season 2020. In fact, two-thirds of retailers (67 per cent) who invested in BOPIS initiatives reported an increased sales volume.”
DOWN TO BUSINESS services than non-luxury buyers,” it says. “To prepare for this, non-essential and luxury retailers will need to consider how they can emulate some of the conveniences offered in sectors such as grocery in their own customer experience.” Ideas for fashion stores include taking payments on the shop floor and offering road-side pick-ups for online orders. In short, it’s about making your transactions as easy as possible for those customers who are looking for speed.
7. Join a ‘shop local’ campaign
DANNY LINES ON UNSPLASH
4. Sell on social media
More shoppers are turning to social media to buy products than ever before, with Grand View Research estimating it represented 11 per cent of all global e-commerce last year. What’s more, two-thirds of global shoppers say their mobile phone has become their most important shopping tool. According to a recent report published by Facebook, social media is now becoming the new flagship store, serving as the main source for product and brand discovery. Globally, 63 per cent of fashion shoppers say they discover new clothing brands or items on social media. Then there’s the rise of live commerce, a growing trend that showcases immersive product demonstrations via live streams. But don’t discount the power of humble direct messages: 59 per cent of global shoppers say they want to connect directly with brands to place orders via their DMs.
5. Create the in-store experience at home
Online shopping has become more immersive since the beginning of the pandemic, with people wanting to mimic some of the in-store experience at home. Many independent retailers
are already achieving this with styling and how-to videos, live fashion shows, styling advice via direct messages and personalised product recommendations. For Christmas, the most successful retailers will be tapping into this consumer demand to offer gift and partywear ideas. Going one step further, virtual try-on tools are becoming more popular and could be a reality for fashion retailers sooner than we think. Facebook’s research reveals that shoppers are ready for it, with 61 per cent of online customers saying they want to virtually try on products from the comfort of their homes.
6. Offer convenience for time-poor shoppers
While e-commerce has undoubtedly grown in popularity since the onset of the pandemic, research firm e-Marketer predicts that 81 per cent of total retail sales worldwide will still take place in physical stores. However, customers’ needs and expectations are shifting, with many planning and researching their trip online before hitting the shops. Facebook’s Reimagining Retail Report highlights a growing need for convenience when shopping in-store: “Luxury shoppers are now 2.5 times more likely to use click-and-collect
Some towns and city centres are capitalising on the demand for supporting local businesses with great results. Tavistock in Devon launched a gift card scheme last Christmas that can be redeemed with over 50 businesses in its town centre. Shoppers buy the card online, which is preloaded with a value of their choice, to be spent on anything locally from fashion to food. The initiative was led by the Tavistock Business Improvement District and supported by West Devon Borough Council as part of its Town Recovery Fund. Bury St Edmunds has also launched its own successful gift card initiative, raising £33,000 for local businesses in 2020. “A Town and City Gift Card is a piece of potential,” says Mark Cordell, MD at Miconex, the company behind the card. “The potential to support a small, independent business who has struggled through the last year. The potential to keep money locked into where you live and the potential to safeguard jobs, livelihoods and the vibrancy of where you live.”
8. Reconsider Black Friday
Black Friday is an event that many independent fashion retailers avoid. However, with research from Future Plc suggesting that 82 per cent of shoppers are going to actively engage in it this year, can you really afford to shun it altogether? Indies clearly can’t compete with the likes of Amazon in their gargantuan deals. However, thinking outside of the box with promotions could help encourage extra sales while the world’s spending their OCTOBER 2021 | boutique. | 45
DOWN TO BUSINESS customers are usually happy to pay extra for the convenience of next day delivery if they need something urgently, or they will visit the high street to collect it in person.
11. Create a destination

lockdown savings. If you don’t want to offer a straight-forward blanket discount, experts recommend going down the ‘added value’ route with a complimentary gift when customers spend over a certain threshold or free next day delivery. Start dropping hints on your socials in the run up to Black Friday and don’t forget to add a banner on your site’s homepage to ensure maximum visibility.
9. Take advantage of Small Business Saturday
If you’ve never taken part in Small Business Saturday, this is the year to start. The popularity of shopping locally snowballed in 2020 – and 15.4 million people supported the campaign and spent a record £1.1 billion. So, with the press almost guaranteed to run away with stories on this year’s event (Saturday 4 December), now’s the time to get prepared. There are hundreds of ideas available online as well as free resources, courtesy of organiser American Express, via smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com. Get in touch with your local BID to find out if there’s anything planned in your area for the day. Experts advise steering clear of Black Friday-style deep discounts, 46 | boutique. | OCTOBER 2021
opting for in-store incentives such as raffles and freebies instead. Some retailers have also seen great success by donating a portion of sales to charity. Lastly, shopping local is all about community. So, use the day as an opportunity to join forces with other indies with cross promotions.
10. Revise your delivery strategy
The last 18 months have been a roller coaster for fashion indies needing to get to grips with e-commerce. Martin Bysh, CEO of fulfilment specialist Huboo, says the situation has been made even more difficult because of the ‘Amazon effect.’ “There’s now this notion that all e-commerce must meet the dizzying standards of fulfilment convenience enabled by this retail behemoth,” he says. “But while there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that free delivery matters, there’s comparatively little to support claims that rapid delivery is now a pre-requisite of success.” The expert says that free delivery removes the element of surprise at the checkout. Also, that offering it has an algorithmic impact, making your products more visible in marketplace searches. However,
With major brands such as Debenhams disappearing from our high streets, some town centres are struggling to pull in footfall. It’s hoped that the Christmas period will draw crowds into physical shops, but with the rise in e-commerce, retailers will need to ensure their customer service is top notch: “The challenge now is in creating a reason to visit town centres and it is important for retailers to work closely with town councils and landlords to make our town centres and high streets a destination once more,” explains Laura Morroll, senior manager at BearingPoint. “We’ll see more examples of former city centre retail locations becoming mixeduse entertainment locations, with popular brands offering alternatives to traditional shopping. Indies will benefit from this rejuvenation of the high street and should ensure that they’re ready with a personalised service and compelling product offer - providing the real-world shopping experiences that we have been craving.”
12. A customer isn’t just for Christmas
Lastly, focusing on loyalty means you’ll reaps the rewards of your festive marketing efforts long after shoppers have polished off the last of their Christmas chocolates. Pointsbased customer loyalty schemes are a tried and tested method to keep shoppers returning. Digital retail solution provider Citrus-Lime offers an integrated Customer Rewards programme for its users, which makes it easy for retailers to implement their own loyalty programme (citruslime. com). Alternatively, going the extra mile for every customer is almost guaranteed to maximise repeat purchases. And there’s no one on the high street that does customer service better than independents.

C
onstantly trying to attract new customers can be demanding. Unless you’re comfortable with spending money on promotional campaigns, it can be expensive and time consuming to continually market to customers who may only buy from you once. Retaining existing customers, on the other hand, is an effective and less costly method of generating sales. Giving customers an incentive to shop with you again is the key to encouraging repeat purchases. Customer Rewards, part of Cloud POS, Citrus-Lime’s End-to-End
Retail Solution, is a loyalty scheme that offers benefits to customers in the form of money off their next purchase. By giving them something of value, customers have a reason to be loyal. It’s simple to implement, cost effective and helps you develop a relationship with your customers. Once they’ve signed up with Customer Rewards, you can keep in touch through monthly emails that advise them of their points balance. You can also stay in control by setting the rate at which points can be earned and how long they remain valid for.
The motivation of customers to repeat purchase is demonstrated in Citrus-Lime’s data, which shows that retailers using Customer Rewards typically experience a 20 per cent redemption rate. In essence, Cloud POS Customer Rewards motivates customers to stay loyal to you, build a relationship with you and keep buying from you.

e’re feeling very optimistic about this year’s Christmas trading period. We feel like this may be a bumper year and people will make up for a missed Christmas last year. For this reason, we’re going to bulk up on jewellery, perfume and accessories. “We’re going to let our product be the hero! We work really hard on buying special pieces that our customers get excited about. We always focus on first price, right price - so we will steer away from discounting. We also offer gift cards and will promote these in-store and on social media. 50 | boutique. | OCTOBER 2021
“We’re working on increasing the personal feel of our social media. We know that other companies are doing really well with lives and reels, and that this is something we need to do. We will plan our social media and email marketing to drive sales throughout the festive period. “Obviously, we’re really hoping that there are no further lockdowns. But if the worst does come to the worst, we will continue to trade on our website and offer click and collect. Mostly, we are really looking forward to getting back to normal this Christmas. To see all of our customers shopping in-store will be such a welcome relief !”

“Christmas really is the best time of the year in retail” Donna Nichol, Chloe James Boutique, St Albans
“W
e want to put last Christmas behind us and push the boat out this year. As a lifestyle store, we stock gifts all year round - but we always bring more in for the festive season and I’m excited to introduce lots of new brands. “We have always been very active on social media and will continue to try to both help and entertain our followers with fun videos and useful posts about gift ideas and what to wear. “I really do not want to think about the possibility of another lockdown - especially over the festive period. However, if it happens, we are ready!
We’ve got a fully up-to-date website with both delivery and click and collect options. We’ve also got a gift-wrapping service in place and are ready to switch back to how we traded last year at a moment’s notice. “We are really looking forward to being rushed off our feet. We want the shop to be buzzing with happy shoppers and we can’t wait to be styling people for parties and helping others choose gifts. Christmas really is the best time of the year in retail. And then we are all looking forward to having a ‘proper Christmas’ with family and friends, being with our loved ones and putting our feet up!”
“There’s going to be an uplift in people buying gifts and shopping local” Victoria Rex-Lees, The Women’s Society Boutique, Hertford
“I
feel there’s going to be an uplift in people buying gifts and shopping local this Christmas. I have bought stock in earlier for that and will be introducing our festive collections early this year. We already have gifts in-store such as hats, scarves and gloves and they are selling well. We will also buy in-season and play things by ear. “I’ve invested in partywear more this year than usual. I think people will be having a lot of family gettogethers and they won’t have any sparkle in their wardrobes from last year. We’ll probably introduce our
festive merchandising in the last week of November and bring out our special Christmas gifts then. “We won’t be taking part in this year’s Black Friday. We have done in the past, but I think it’s highly damaging to the brand. Discounting so heavily is not right for our industry. It also means the sales begin a lot sooner, as retailers will often go into sale right after. “We usually run a shopping event on the same weekend as Small Business Saturday and link it in, so we will probably do that again this year. I think we will also run another event the weekend before, so we have two hits.
“We are being affected by stock shortages and Brexit currently, so that will determine what we can do in-store this Christmas. I’m optimistic that there won’t be another lockdown, but if there is then we have everything in place to continue trading online.” OCTOBER 2021 | boutique. | 51

Ways to pay
THREE SOFTWARE’S ROB FINLEY WEIGHS UP THE DIFFERENT WAYS BOUTIQUES CAN PAY FOR AN EPOS SYSTEM
1. Purchase outright
Buying your system outright means you get to own the hardware and a version of the software, but it could make more sense to invest in stock or staff plus it’s not always beneficial from a tax perspective.
2. Lease the whole system Like business finance, leasing a system over three to five years means you have time to pay and can even get to own it in some cases. However, you pay interest and are tied in for the period of the lease.
3. Software as a Service (SaaS)
You can also rent software for a monthly fee and this usually encompasses support, data hosting and updates. However, you may pay more this way overall and some companies raise their prices in the second year. Meanwhile, hardware might be low spec or they may not be on-site support.
4. Solution as a Service (confusingly also called SaaS)
In this scenario you get the whole
solution for one simply monthly fee: hardware, software, software support with updates and on-site hardware support. This could be a great solution for everyone, but you may pay more in the long run.
5. Card processing
Some integrated card processing solutions are charging 3 per cent plus. EPoS should be free or at least heavily subsidised, so paying these prices will probably be costing you a lot more than opting for a SaaS, which Three Software offers for £99 a month.

“As we head into the Christmas months, retailers should plan for two extremes in consumer behaviour” HARI KRISHNADASAN, MD AT CAPRI CLOTHING, ON PREPARING FOR 2021’S GOLDEN QUARTER
“W
ith pent up demand, unspent lockdown savings for those in employment and (hopefully) widespread positivity, this Christmas has the potential to be the UK’s second consecutive unprecedented peak trading period. “Last Christmas, much of the country was in lockdown. People were prevented from seeing loved ones and the closure of ‘non-essential’ retail meant it was a festive period like no other before. Assuming the UK’s vaccine-powered recovery is a success and there is no need for further lockdowns, Christmas 2021 – and the golden quarter of shopping that builds up to it - should map out very differently. “Now is the perfect time to assess consumer sentiment and forecast how Christmas sales will play out throughout the final quarter. Data from Retail Economics clearly shows consumer confidence is on the rise at this point in the pandemic, with encouraging signs in terms of consumers’ willingness to spend. Analysts forecast the UK will not have any further lockdowns and that the successful rollout of the vaccine will continue. Coupled with the easing of other pandemic restrictions, there is much to be positive about. “Retail watchers are also confident that shopping centres will experience an upturn in traffic this golden 54 | boutique. | OCTOBER 2021

quarter because of the mix of leisure and retail they provide. Shopping centres will come into their own because they weren’t open last year and are going to go big on celebrations. It’s hoped that this will pull people in during the festive season because consumers have been starved of this sensory experience. “Clothing and footwear sales are also expected to rise by a significant 10.7 per cent on 2020’s golden quarter. Last year’s cancelled holidays, restrictions around socialising and the explosion in WFH decimated demand for new clothes. As quoted by PWC’s director of retail strategy, ‘hospitality and
holidays are good for fashion’. And as households and businesses approach the Christmas season, there will be significantly more social interactions in the shape of festive parties and celebrations that will boost demand for new outfits. “As we head into the Christmas months, retailers should plan for two extremes in consumer behaviour: there will be the party-goers desperate for social interaction this festive season, but there will also be a cautious proportion of the population keen to avoid crowds. Successful retailers will be those who cater for both with their product ranges and consumer engagement.”
