Hochul Seeks to Change Ballot Law After Lieutenant Governor Arrested

By Joe Kuhn

Governor Kathy Hochul is having a challenging month. Due to a quirk in New York’s election laws, it appears that former Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin may still be listed as her running mate for the 2022 gubernatorial election despite being arrested for federal bribery and conspiracy charges two weeks ago. CBS news reported that Hochul reached out to the state legislature earlier this week in hopes of changing the law which currently prevents Benjamin from being removed from the ballot. “I would like the Legislature to pass legislation that corrects what is really a strange part of our law that does not allow the removal of someone who is under indictment or in other circumstances someone who has a terminal illness maybe. I mean, the law is the law until it’s changed,” Hochul said. New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins confirmed the governor called her Monday night to discuss amending the law. Benjamin resigned as lieutenant governor on April 12, hours after surrendering himself to the authorities who arrested and indicted the Harlem native for several charges, including bribery and honest services wire fraud. Benjamin was subsequently released on a $250,000 bond after entering a not guilty plea in federal court. US Attorney Damian Williams has alleged that “from at least in or about 2019, up to and including at least in or about 2021, Benjamin participated in a scheme to obtain campaign contributions from a Harlem-based real estate developer in exchange for Benjamin’s use of his official authority and influence as a New York State senator to obtain a $50,000 state-funded grant for a non-profit organization controlled by the developer.” In the court documents, it is further suggested that Benjamin and others acting on his behalf, or at his direction, engaged in a series of lies and deceptions to cover up his scheme, including by falsifying campaign donor forms and misleading city regulators. Governor Hochul immediately accepted Benjamin’s resignation and has since sought to distance herself from her former, and possibly current, running mate. “While the legal process plays out, it is clear to both of us that he cannot continue to serve as lieutenant governor. New Yorkers deserve absolute confidence in their government, and I will continue working every day to deliver for them,” said the Governor. Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Hochul indicated Benjamin is unlikely to leave the state.”Right now the best option is to get the Legislature and ask them for their support for legislation to correct this deficiency in current law,” she said. Hochul has a tight deadline to formally sever ties with Benjamin as early voting begins on June 18. New York law currently dictates that a candidate for office cannot be removed from the ballot after accepting a nomination, barring a few narrow circumstances such as leaving the state or dying. Oddly enough, standing trial for conspiracy is not presently considered

grounds to remove a candidate from the ticket. If the law is not changed, Hochul will remain unable to name a new running mate, and will run in the general election alongside the winner of the June 28 democratic primary election for Lt. Governor. Activist Ana Maria Archila, and former New York City Councilwoman Diana Reyna, are competing for the nomination. State Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, a Democrat from Westchester County, has indicated she will introduce a bill that would allow for the removal of candidates facing criminal charges or a terminal illness. The measure could gain a floor vote in her chamber.”I’m hoping we will,” Paulin said on Tuesday. “I don’t know for sure, but I’m hoping we will. We’re certainly talking about it.” Democratic lawmakers who control the state Senate and Assembly have been hesitant to support making changes to the election law ahead of the primary vote. “I really, really, really don’t like to change rules in the middle of a process,” Stewart-Cousins said. “It’s certainly in the middle of an election. She did speak to me last night and we will continue the conversation. .” State Republicans share those reservations, and have signaled their intent to block any legislation that would alter the current law. New York State GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy said in a statement, “If Kathy Hochul’s co-conspirators in the legislature help her avoid accountability for picking a crook as Lieutenant Governor they will be directly responsible for aiding and abetting the cesspool of Albany corruption, and we will make sure every voter knows it.”

Gas Relief Promised: Rockland leadership to lower taxes at the pump

Rockland's leadership, taking a cue from the state government, have established a cap on fuel taxes for the rest of 2022. County Executive Ed Day and County Legislature Chairman Jay Hood Jr. were happy to announce last week that local sales tax on motor fuel will be capped at $2 per gallon. The change means sales tax will only be applied to the first $2 of a gasoline purchase, opposed to the full gas price consumers are currently paying, which is now over $4 a gallon. The 2022 New York State Budget provides a suspension of the state excise and sales tax, providing a combined 16 cents per gallon savings to consumers, from June 1, 2022, through December 31, 2022. To provide additional savings to Rockland families, the County Executive and County Legislature made the joint decision to cap the local sales tax on motor fuel at $2 per gallon effective June 1, 2022, through February 28, 2023, two months longer than New York State’s tax suspensions. At the current price of gasoline, this cap will generate approximately 8 cents in additional savings for consumers which, when coupled with state tax suspensions, should result in an estimated 24 cents in relief at the gas pump starting this summer. County officials chose not to suspend the motor fuel sales tax entirely to avoid a major deficit in this year’s 2022 budget. Rockland’s leadership hope this resolution, combined with the actions of New York State, provides financial relief to families. “Between the record-inflation, rising gas prices, and the pandemic, our families need help now and Rockland County leadership worked expeditiously to deliver it," said Day. The role of government is to create an environment where residents can thrive, not to make money or profiteer off families feeling the duress of a strained economy. We hope that this cap provides some muchneeded reprieve to Rockland County families. County Legislature Chairman Jay Hood Jr. added, “sticker shock is a harsh reality for many Rockland County families as the prices of so many basics - eggs, meat, gas - have soared. It’s part of County government’s job to recognize the needs of people and to act and bringing some relief at the gas pump is an important way we can help. I am glad the Legislature was able to collaborate with the County Executive to bring about this needed relief. This is the way government should work for the people.”

Metro-North Railroad Reveals New Platform Shelter and Station Enhancements at Nanuet On April 21, Metro North Railroad President Catherine Rinaldi announced the opening of the rebuilt platform shelter at the Nanuet Station, dedicated in memory of Orrin Getz, Vice Chair of the Metro-North Railroad Commuter Council. The Nanuet Station is the Pascack Valley Line’s busiest station in New York, with approximately 600 daily customers prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The shelter welcomes riders with new benches with USB connections, LED lights, a fully glass enclosed waiting area, heating, a wooden ceiling, and exterior directional signs. The platform shelter has been redesigned in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and is equipped with communication and security enhancements, including a new speaker and camera inside the shelter and Help Points – sleek metal enclosures that contain an emergency call box with a direct line to MTA Police Department (MTAPD). Additionally, as part of the MTA’s Customer Service Initiative, crews have installed a kiosk that displays real-time train departure information. “A modern, attractive and clean station is an important

part of the Metro-North customer experience,” said Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi, “Part of that improved customer experience is largely owed to the efforts of Orrin Getz, a leading voice for all Metro-North riders, but especially for West of Hudson riders, being a Pascack Valley rider himself. The shelter has been deservingly dedicated to Orrin, in recognition of his accomplishments and years advocating for improved service on behalf of his community.” “Orrin Getz dedicated decades of his life to advocacy on behalf of Rockland County commuters and is exactly why I asked for this shelter to be named in his honor,” said Rockland County Executive Ed Day. “Rockland County looks forward to continued collaboration with MetroNorth and New Jersey Transit to further improve service on the Pascack Valley line and revitalize other stations in our County, because as we know, much, much more needs to be done for our beleaguered Rockland commuters.” “On behalf of the Town of Clarkstown, we thank MetroNorth for this much needed upgrade to the Nanuet Train Station,” said Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann. “The residents of Clarkstown and Rockland County appreciate the new communication, technology and security enhancements. I am so delighted that the new shelter is dedicated to longtime resident and transportation advocate, Orrin Getz. Over the years, Orrin committed countless hours to advocacy and his efforts directly resulted in improved service to the Pascack Valley line. This dedication is a true honor to his commitment to our community and his fellow commuters.” “The beautiful shelter being unveiled today is a wonderful testament to Orrin Getz,” said Lisa Daglian, Executive Director of the Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA (PCAC). “He was a staunch advocate for meeting the needs of all riders and wanted to be sure that everyone could access Metro-North, including riders with disabilities. The amenities included here will make waiting for the train less of a burden. A West of Hudson rider, Orrin constantly beat the drum for better and more service and improving communication between the Railroad and commuters. It is a very bittersweet moment that Orrin can’t be here to see this dedication – this shelter in many ways epitomizes his commitment to supporting his fellow riders.” Both the station shelter work and the real time information upgrades and are funded through the MTA’s capital program. The shelter work was performed by Pleasant Contracting Corp., a Staten Island-based contracting company that participates in the MTA’s Small Business Mentoring Program.

RCC Hospitality and Culinary Arts Center Food Enthusiast Class: Chilling & Grilling on May 12

By County Executive Ed Day Here in County Government, we are always working to improve the lives of everyone who calls Rockland home. This month I am proud to announce two more grant programs that will utilize $7 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to do just that supporting small businesses and urban green spaces. We know that people have struggled significantly because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A report done last year by the New York State Comptroller found that 4 out of 5 small businesses in New York, which make up 99% of all businesses nationwide and about 50% of our state’s workforce, continue to report negative economic impacts caused by the pandemic. The Rockland Small Business Rescue Grant Program will utilize $2 million in ARPA funds to reimburse small businesses between $5,000 and $50,000 for eligible expenses incurred during, and related to, the pandemic. Eligible businesses include, but are not limited to, Indoor Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation, Pet Grooming, Boarding, and Walking, Restaurants, Eateries, Food Stands and Food Trucks, Bars, Bakeries, Cafes, Breweries/Wineries Catering, Delis, etc., Bookstore/Stationary, Housekeeping, Fitness Centers, Florists, General Retail, Salons/Spas, Bicycle shops, Other Consumer Service Firms (i.e.,Architectural, Design, Marketing). Eligible expenses include, but are not limited to: Commercial/Retail Rent (up to 3 months) Safety Investments (Including PPE, Cleaning Supplies, UV Cleaning Supplies/Services) Hardware Fees Software Fees Marketing Fees (advertising and promotion) Credit Card Processing Fees (difference of increase from 2021 to 2022) Supplies (operational items) The pandemic highlighted the importance of urban green spaces. Across the country when many indoor recreation activities were restricted residents throughout Rockland chose to spend their time in outdoor areas that remained accessible. Residents who utilized urban green spaces reported better health outcomes during the pandemic than those who rarely went outside. The Rockland Resilient Recreation Grant Program will award municipalities and non-profits between $5,000 up to $200,000 for investments in public urban green spaces, with the total grant program utilizing up to $5 million in ARPA Funds. Eligible Entities: Rockland County Municipalities Rockland County Nonprofits Projects include but are not limited to: Active Parks Passive Parks (Gardens, open play areas, picnic areas, sitting areas, etc.) Playgrounds Paths to Connect Existing Green Spaces Community Food Gardens Multi-Use Green Infrastructure (Stormwater basins, rain gardens, etc.) Community beautification projects Mini-Forests We have made great progress in recovering from the economic damage of the COVID-19 pandemic and must continue to support the small businesses that are the lifeblood of our economy, but a business is only as strong as their workforce. For that reason, we believe it is crucial to also invest in the mental health of our residents by developing more urban green spaces. These two programs will help ensure Rockland’s recovery stays on track I ask that you please share this information with your favorite small businesses and non-profits you may volunteer with or donate to. We’re utilizing every avenue available to raise awareness of this funding. Applications for these grant programs are available right now. The Road Not Taken: A Story of Environmental Preservation

(Photo: Matt Cioffi)

By Jess Warren Two local small businesses came together at just the right time this Spring to collaborate on a combination that people tend to love– working out and comfort food. Petey Wheaty’s, a catering shop in New City, has teamed up with Turtles Fitness in Sloatsburg in hopes to uplift the Rockland community with what they love. It all started 2018 when the President of Turtles Fitness, Eric Bonkoski created his first logo, modeled after his pet turtle Frank. The logo became popular and soon enough, Bonkoski and his friends adopted Frank as their friend group’s “unofficial mascot”. Bonkoski soon started handing out pins and stickers of Frank around Suffern High School, where he graduated from in 2019. After witnessing the success of that intial merchandise, his friend brought up the idea to start making shirts as well. Before the collaboration began, Bonkoski already was experimenting with shirts that had an ice cream logo on it until another idea came in mind - to reach out and support another local business based in the Rockland area. “When there’s times of struggle, you have to come together, you have to help other businesses.” Bonkoski told the Rockland County Times. That’s when Bonkoski and the rest of his team reached out to Peter Margolin, the owner of Petey Whetey’s through Instagram. Both businesses were more than happy to come together and represent what they’re all about, making their customrs happy. While Turtles Fitness is very much a product of their generation, Bonkoski and his team want to make fitness fun for all ages

and want everyone to feel involved, regardless of size, shape, and passions. “I hope to build a community around fitness for everyone,” said Bonkoski. He continued with, “Fitness is meant to be fun!” Four years later, the Turtles Fitness team now includes Santiago Balbuena Jr - Marketing Director, Hector Gutierrez- Graphic Artist, Kevin Gonzalez- Graphic Artist and Matt Cioffi- Photographer. Governor Hochul Establishes New York State Office of Strategic Workforce Development

Governor Kathy Hochul is taking a portion of the state budget to invest in New York’s workforce. On Tuesday, the governor’s office announced the creation of the New York State Office of Strategic Workforce Development, which will be charged with improving the State’s workforce development programs and practices to better align with the needs and priorities of today’s employers. The Governor first proposed the new office in her State of the State address earlier this year and committed funding that was approved in the FY2023 budget. The $350 million investment in state funding will support “wide-reaching, and coordinated investment” in workforce development across state agencies and authorities and includes $150 million in multi-year funding for new grant programs that will primarily support employer-driven, high skilled workforce training programs. “New Yorkers are still struggling to find work and opportunity due to the economic disruption of the pandemic,” Governor Hochul said. “This issue is personal to me - I’ve seen steel plants close leaving workers with nowhere to go. With our brand-new Office of Strategic Workforce Development, we are doubling down on our commitment to help train and connect New Yorkers with the good-paying jobs of the future.” “The new Office of Strategic Workforce Development will optimize ESD’s relationships with the state’s industries and employers to generate new opportunities for New Yorkers and encourage regional economic growth,” said Empire State Development Acting Commissioner and President and CEO-designate Hope Knight . “Together with our State University system and our agency partners, we can provide businesses with a talent pipeline to catalyze new investments throughout the state.” The Office of Strategic Workforce Development will function under Empire State Development (ESD), marking a decisive change in workforce development policy to one that is focused on supporting the labor needs of the state’s highest-growth sectors while producing new opportunity for un/underemployed and underrepresented workers. ESD will manage the Office in close coordination with agency partners, including the Department of Labor, the State University of New York, and the City

University of New York. To launch this effort, New York State - in partnership with the Business Council of New York State - has developed a comprehensive online survey to solicit vital feedback from businesses on the skills required for workers to be successful in today’s complex economy, and how New York can prepare and position its labor force to better serve companies’ needs. This demand-driven approach will ensure that New York has access to real-time feedback on in-demand jobs and skills to inform its statewide and regional workforce development efforts. Critically, ESD will work hand-in-hand with the state’s 10 Regional Economic Development Councils, which will engage with local stakeholders and help to identify specific skills and industries to prioritize in each region in the post-pandemic economy. In addition to promoting an industry-driven strategy, ESD will also introduce and administer $150 million in new programs, aimed primarily at meeting high-skilled employer needs to fill in-demand jobs and complement the State’s existing workforce development efforts. This programming will include performance-based grants for workforce training providers that successfully place trainees in quality jobs, flexible operating funds to help providers cover the costs of program administration, and capital funding to allow providers to make essential capital purchases and/or upgrades to their training facilities. To ensure flexibility to meet changing needs, funding will be available on a real-time, continual basis to generate a pipeline of new workers for regionally-significant industries. As these new programs are expected to launch later this year, the Office will also establish and maintain metrics for tracking the implementation and success of the programs. ESD is currently conducting a comprehensive search for Office personnel to implement and lead the State’s ambitious efforts. lly we will have in New York State under the new Office of Strategic Workforce Development. I’m grateful for Governor Hochul’s leadership in proposing this vital effort, and I’m proud to have supported this new initiative as part of the State budget.”

Twitter has agreed to sell itself to Elon Musk in a deal valued at around $44 billion

Elon Musk, 50, has made clear that he sees many deficiencies in Twitter as a social media service. He has said that he wants to “transform” the company as a “platform for free speech around the globe” and that it requires vast improvements in its product and policies.“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Said Musk in a statement included in the press release announcing the $44 billion deal. He has also acted erratically on the platform, raising concerns over how he might manage the service should he be in charge of it. On Saturday, Mr. Musk took aim at the billionaire Bill Gates, saying that Mr. Gates had taken a “short” position on the stock of Tesla, which meant that Mr. Gates was betting the carmaker’s shares would fall. On Sunday, Mr. Musk tweeted that he was “moving on” from making fun of Mr. Gates. Twitter would become a private company on completion of the deal, which requires shareholder and regulatory approval. Twitter’s board seemed to have two reasons to consider rejecting the deal. The first was that the offer, while priced well above Twitter’s current share price, was arguably too low given it had recently surged above that price tag. The second was that it was initially unclear how Musk would fund the deal. Despite his being the world’s richest person, much of his wealth is tied up in Tesla stock, meaning he would likely have to borrow against his holdings to fund the deal. Afterwards, Musk announced that he had received commitments which included about $25.5 billion in debt financing from Morgan Stanley Senior Funding and other firms. He said he committed about $21 billion in equity financing. Musk’s interest in Twitter comes from his own frequent use of the platform. “Once the deal closes, we don’t know which direction the platform will go,” he said.

Climate Activist Self Immolates in D.C.

Last Friday a US climate activist staged a shocking and tragic protest outside of the US supreme court building in Washington. Wynn Bruce, from Boulder, Colorado, set himself on fire on, April 22, Earth Day, and was pronounced dead by the Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department on Saturday April 23. Police said Bruce had set himself on fire at about 6.30pm on Friday, and was airlifted to hospital. A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan police told the Denver Post that investigators had not found a manifesto or note explaining Bruce’s motive. Shortly before his death, Bruce, 50, had edited a comment on his Facebook page, adding the date 22 April and a fire emoji. The comment was in response to a post about the global impact of climate change. Bruce had posted several times over the past year about the environment. On Sunday, Kritee Kanko, a Boulder-based climate scientist and Zen Buddhist priest, said Bruce was a friend and member of her Buddhist community, who had been planning the self-immolation for “at least one year”. “This act is not suicide. This is a deeply fearless act of compassion to bring attention to climate crisis,” Kanko said in a tweet. In a subsequent interview with the New York Times, Kanko said she could not be completely certain about Bruce’s intentions.

One of my favorite poets is the late Robert Frost. Frost is a legendary Pulitzer Prize winning poet who also received a Congressional Gold Medal for his life’s work in 1960. He is likely best remembered for his famous poem “The Road Not Taken.” The poem tells the story of a traveler who comes to a fork in the road in a wooded area and ponders which direction to go. He looks down each path and contemplates what lies ahead. After a while, he observes that one road has clearly been more heavily traveled than the other. After thinking long and hard he decides to take the road that is less traveled and slightly overgrown. The poem concludes as follows; “I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence; two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” It is a masterpiece of American poetry that is both synonymous with and analogous to major life changes and decision points. It is without a doubt one of my favorite poems; I love the hidden meaning it carries. I thought of Frost’s poem as we dedicated the first new park in Clarkstown in twenty years: the Bear Swamp Preserve and Nature Trail. On Tuesday, we officially cut the ribbon and unveiled this wonderful new four-plus acre park that will serve as a gateway to the larger countyowned 83 acre Mountainview Nature Preserve. The Mountainview Nature Preserve is one of the best kept secrets in Town with miles of trails that provide exceptional views of West Nyack, lower Rockland and the Hudson River. It is accessible from Greenbush Road behind the old Journal News property. It has a leg of the Long Path but unfortunately is not nearly as well-known or utilized partly due to a lack of access from Mountainview Avenue. The Bear Swamp Preserve and Nature Trail, with its new parking lot, swamp and pond area, forest and meadow provides direct access from the heavily populated Mountainview Condominiums, home to thousands of residents. The story of how this park came to be really is a story of a “road not typically taken.” Namely, in 2016 the St. Peter’s Syro-Malankara Church had acquired this environmentally sensitive 4.3 acre parcel and proposed to erect an 11,000 square foot building with 56 parking spaces, which would have forever eliminated the serene setting. Almost immediately, residents sprang into action forming the Mountainview Preservation group, which collected thousands of signatures in opposition. These residents included Peggy Freeman, Joy Wallen, Billie Berman, Christiana Huber, Darryl Eason, Edward Mooney and Lisa Lundgren. In addition others from the community came forward, including Antonia Sambevski a Valley Cottage mother and Girl Scout troop leader, who also raised the alarm. This grassroots activism was essential to assisting the town and me in convincing the church leadership to abandon their plans to develop the property. Eventually, working with the Church, we moved to acquire the property for $230,000 in late 2017. It was a victory for the town and its people in forever protecting this environmentally sensitive space. Last year we finalized plans to transform the property. Utilizing mainly Town staff, we demolished the old, deteriorated single family home on the front edge of the property and installed an entry driveway and six car parking lot. The Town Highway Department trucked in several thousand yards of clean fill to cap off where the house was, creating a space to plant a natural flower meadow that gently slopes down from the road to the edge of the water. This is just one of the many efforts we have undertaken to preserve the quality and character of our town. These include enhanced code enforcement, new building and zoning laws and regulations and a real commitment to property acquisition, which includes 21 acres at the former Rockland Country Day School, the Grace Baptist Church, the Marydell property in Upper Nyack that is now part of Hook Mountain, and the dramatic expansion of the West Nyack Hamlet Green which is currently underway. However, I am most proud of the involvement of our young people through the Nyack High School Environmental Club and their advisor, teacher Tom Perry, on this project. Students received training and guidance from our Town Planning and Engineering Departments and staff from my office. After several Zoom meetings this winter, the students were prepared to assist in the placement of flags to create the trails. Our Town GIS staff and police worked collaboratively to map the trails that now connect into the existing trails at the Mountainview Nature Preserve. Working together, Town and County staff along with these 40 students helped to identify, plan and orient the trails. Even while they were off from school last week, a number of these students along with many other volunteers from the Mountainview Preservation Group, met to further cleanup the property. Mr. Perry and one student boldly trudged through the water area wearing hip waders, pulling out debris including tires and old car parts. This past weekend the Mountainview Preservation Group made one last contribution toward beautifying the new park. The group held a fundraiser to raise funds to include an information kiosk and specialized Knickerbocker bench made from natural materials, to welcome visitors and provide a place to rest after their walk. These items will be built and installed inside the park later this season. This experience closely mirrors the options and decisions the traveler encounters in the “Road Not Taken.” In 2016 we had a fork in the road and could have taken one of two paths: the first leading to an unwelcome development of an environmentally sensitive area; the second leading to the preservation of open space and a new nature park. Thankfully, during my time as Supervisor we chose the road less traveled—and as the poet echoed all those years ago, and that has made all the difference.

Donald Trumped By NY Supreme Court

New York Attorney General Letitia James won a victory in her office’s ongoing civil investigation into Donald J. Trump and the Trump Organization’s financial dealings on Monday when a judge ruled that Donald J. Trump is in contempt of court. After hearing arguments earlier Monday, the Justice Arthur Engoron of the New York County State Supreme Court ruled that the former president is in contempt of court for failing to comply with his previous orders to provide documents to the Office of the Attorney General and imposed a $10,000 fine on Trump for every day that he continues to violate the court’s order to produce these documents. “Today, justice prevailed,” said Attorney General James. “For years, Donald Trump has tried to evade the law and stop our lawful investigation into him and his company’s financial dealings. Today’s ruling makes clear: No one is above the law.” In April 2022, James took legal action to hold Trump in contempt for his refusal to comply with the court’s order to produce documents in response to a subpoena served on him by the attorney general’s office as part of its ongoing investigation into his financial dealings. The motion for contempt also sought to impose a $10,000 fine on Trump for every day that he violated the court’s order to produce these documents.

All in With John Jastremski A First Round Flop For Drama Filled Nets. Now What? By John Jastremski On Monday, the Nets chaotic and disappointing 2021-2022 season came to a close with a major thud. At the beginning of the year, the Nets were title favorites. There was no possible way the Nets could be a 7 seed and get swept in the first round right? Believe it. In fact the Nets are the first preseason title favorite to be swept in the first round ever. So, the preseason narrative would have suggested that there is no way the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets would be comparable teams. After all, the Nets took down the Celtics in 5 games in the first round a season ago. Well, the Nets and Celtics weren’t comparable teams this year. The Celtics were flat out better. The Celtics taking down Brooklyn shouldn’t surprise anyone who watched NBA Basketball over the last four months. The Celtics played as a team, got better as the season

went along and looked like a group that had cohesion and unity. The Nets featured none of those qualities. It’s tough to have cohesion when the so called “Big 3” of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden is broken up mid-season. It’s tough to have top notch team chemistry when Kyrie Irving missed almost all of your home games because of the vaccine mandate. Plus the kicker, Ben Simmons the headliner in the mid-season Harden blockbuster didn’t find his way into one Nets game this season. You lay out that adversity plus the injury to sharp shooter Joe Harris and it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the Nets fell well short of their championship or bust goal. The reality for the Nets franchise is simple going

Readers’ Letters

Dear Editor, May is Mental Health Awareness Month. As a volunteer and advocate with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, this month I am asking everyone to join us and demand #MoreForMentalHealth. My name is Ana Almanzar and I am writing because I need legal help for my son Alec Almanzar who is a suicide pact survivor. On October 07, 2021, Alec, and his girlfriend Allie, went to a gun range in Holly Hills Florida. With heads joined and with one bullet they attempted to kill themselves. I am surmising that Allie died immediately. The detective working the case indicated that he would be in touch with me because he needed to interview me. In spite, of having all my contact information, he never called, emailed or wrote to me. Alec, who is now 23 years old, was hospitalized from October to December 2021. He was initially in a coma, had tracheal intubation and neurosurgery. Alec still has the bullet lodged in his frontal lobe and has a diagnosis of traumatic brain injury. He received physical and other therapies while at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach. As he started to heal, the Baker Act was used to transfer him to the psychiatric unit of the same hospital. When discharged, his hospital social worker confirmed (with Baker Act judge) that Alec did not have any warrants. I bought him to The Bronx with me because I do not reside in Florida. On January 19, the marshals showed up at my door and took Alec to Rikers Island. He remained there until the end of February. He is now in Jail in Florida where they are charging him as a murderer and a fugitive. Alec and Allie were both born and raised in the Bronx and met in high school. They only lived in Florida (with roommates) for about 3-4 years. Allie had a history of many psychiatric hospitalization and suicide attempts in both New York and Florida. Unfortunately, what happened to Alec was a perfect storm. At the same time that his older brother passed away, in 2017, Alec was struggling with the initial onset of undiagnosed Schizotypal personality disorder. Because of everything that was going on, he decided that he wanted to relocate to Florida with his friend. Allie joined him shortly after. Alec was vulnerable and not equipped to care for his girlfriend and her serious mental illness, while at the same time trying to figure out his own psychiatric issues. While in Florida, he did receive counseling and was prescribed medication. Alec was very protective, nurturing and caring towards Allie. Taking care of Allie was a huge responsibility that should have been taken on by her parents and mental health professionals. The reality of it is that Allie wanted to die, and because Alec was so mentally fragile and vulnerable, he was easily persuaded to join her. Due to

into this summer, the past three years haven’t been good enough. If I told a Nets fan after the Durant/ Irving signings in the summer of 2020 that their team wouldn’t have seen a title, an NBA Finals appearance or a Conference Final three years later, they wouldn’t have believed me. The franchise and their two best players Durant and Irving have fallen short of very lofty expectations. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were outplayed by Jayson Tatum and Marcus Smart in this series. How was Brooklyn supposed to have a chance against this dangerous Celtics team when it’s two star players weren’t leading the way. The Nets window is not fully closed, but it’s closing fast. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are not getting any younger. Who knows what Ben Simmons will add if anything to the Nets next season? Can Steve Nash lead the team as a championship caliber coach, for my money the jury is very much still out on that. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving can still write a happily ever after ending to this story, but they better start rewriting the script now. Three years in, Nets fans haven’t gotten enough

their combined mental illnesses, Alec and Allie felt suicide was the only solution to whatever they were feeling and thinking at the time. I need your help because my son is not a murderer, and definitely was not a fugitive. He is a suicide survivor who needs medical treatment, therapy and support and not prison. I am doing more by calling on my legislators at the federal and state levels to support legislation that will fund the implementation of 988 and the suicide and mental health crisis system across our nation, particularly for those in underserved communities. Currently, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available at 1-800-273-8255 and de-escalates the crises of tens of thousands of callers each day. On July 16, those in distress and those that support them will be able to reach the Lifeline through a simple 3-digit number: 988. By making the Lifeline more accessible through this shorter number, calls, texts, and chats to the Lifeline’s network of crisis call centers are expected to increase. It is vital that the federal government work with states to ensure callers in distress will have: 1) someone to call, 2) someone to come help, and 3) somewhere safe to go. We must act NOW to secure funding to equip call centers and community crisis response services throughout the country with the staff and resources to respond to everyone in crisis. Join me this month in urging our federal and state public officials to do #MoreForMentalHealth. You can start by visiting moreformentalhealth.org. Together, we can help #StopSuicide. Sincerely, Ana Almanzar

Dear Editor, The continuing hate speech (including renewed calls for mass violence and genocide), discriminatory policies, dehumanization, harassment, and violence Targeting Muslims have reached dangerous levels over the past three weeks. During the Hindu festival of Ram Navmi and Hanuman Jayanti, the Hindu extremists rampaged through Muslim neighborhood areas in at least 8 Indian states. They attacked Muslims, their families, homes, businesses, and places of worship. The exact details about the loss of lives and property are unknown, as most violence-affected areas continue to be under strict curfew or other arbitrary restrictions by the state. On Sunday, Ibris Ahmed, 28, who went missing during the Hindu extremist violence in Madhya Pradesh’s Khargone, was found dead in a hospital. The Hindu supremacist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which rules most of the violence-affected states, instead of taking action against the Hindu extremists, is actively targeting the Muslim victims through arbitrary arrests, bulldozing houses and shops by falsely accusing them of participating in the violence. We strongly condemn this large-scale, well-orchestrated nation-

wide violence against Muslims and express our deepest concerns that it has the potential to turn into a full-blown Muslim and Christian genocide in the coming months. Sincerely, Mohammed Afsar

Dear Editor, May is Mental Health Awareness Month. As a volunteer and advocate with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, this month I am asking everyone to join us and demand #MoreForMentalHealth. As a Suicide Loss Survivor I want to do everything in my power to bring awareness to helping those who struggle with their wellbeing, and especially their Mental Health. If we can save even one person the excruciating pain losing someone they love to Suicide we will have made a difference. My wish is that we treat each other with respect and kindness every day, and Mental Health Awareness Month is a great reminder to do what you can. A phone call, some kind words or even a smile can be a game changer to someone at a time when they need it most. Reach out to someone to offer help. Reach out if you need help. It’s OK to not be OK.
