Ghost Busted:

Haverstraw man indicted for possesion of unregistered “ghost guns”

By Joe Kuhn

Gregory Lopez, 45 of Haverstraw, NY has been indicted by the county DA’s office following an ongoing Investigation into the sale and possession of “ghost guns” in Rockland The defendant was charged under a new subsection of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree designed specifically to combat the sale of unregistered fire arms. The term “ghost gun” denotes the fact that these privately manufactured weapons, which do not have serial numbers, are difficult to trace, and thus ideal for use in criminal activity. This is the first use of the law in New York State. On April 27, 2022, a search warrant was executed at 64 Rosman Road in the Town of Haverstraw pursuant to an investigation into the purchasing of “ghost gun” parts. After a thorough search of the residence, two loaded AR-15 rifles were recovered, neither of which had serial numbers on them. The search would also uncover a quantity of .223 and .308 caliber ammunition and loaded magazines, and multiple “ghost gun” parts.

Gregory Lopez was indicted by a Rockland County Grand Jury on the following charges: • Two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree for possessing two loaded firearms • Two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree for possessing two firearms while having a prior criminal conviction • Two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree for possessing two assault weapons • Six counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree for possessing major components of firearms (ghost gun parts) while being prohibited from owning them due to prior criminal conduct. Office of the District Attorney County of Rockland. “The purchasing and possession of illegal firearms is an offense that my office takes very seriously” said Distrcit Attorney Walsh. “This indictment should send a strong message to anyone who is thinking about purchasing illegal firearms or parts. I would like to thank the Homeland Security Investigations, Rockland County District Attorney’s Office Narcotics Task Force, Clarkstown Police Department, Haverstraw Police Department, Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI for their assistance with this case. “

THE COUNTY

EXECUTIVE’S CORNER

“Our Fight Against the Opioid Crisis”

COUNTY TIMES ROCKLAND

Sounds in the Round: Local songwriter creates showcase for other local musical artists By Jess Warren

By County Executive Ed Day We in the County government are constantly doing everything we can think of to combat the opioid crisis. Heroin and other drugs have stolen too many of our residents over these past few years, particularly our young people. Without question, this epidemic has resulted in inherent costs that so far have been unfairly borne by our taxpayers including costs to local law enforcement and first responders, counseling and assistance to our residents facing this crisis, and treatment costs for those battling addiction. In 2019, Rockland County took swift action against the bad actors in big pharma fueling the opioid epidemic by pursuing legal action against manufacturers and distributors of prescription opiates. On behalf of the County of Rockland, we joined these lawsuits to have these companies pay for the damage, death and destruction their outrageous marketing strategies brought to our communities, and I’m proud to confirm we were successful in that endeavor. With respect to the New York settlement, the amount being allocated to Rockland is over $10 million that will be distributed over 18 years. This includes the New York settlement with certain distributors in which Rockland is receiving $8 million distributed over 18 years, the Johnson and Johnson settlement in which Rockland is receiving $1.7 million distributed over 10 years and Rockland’s allocated share of the Allergan settlement, estimated to be $616,459 in a single payment. This legal battle was never about the money. These settlements are our way of holding these companies accountable for their role in this crisis while providing some justice for the many, many victims. These lawsuits have shown the pharmaceutical industry that profits should never come before people. Rockland is continuing to take a comprehensive approach to combat substance use issues and the opioid epidemic, and this legal action is just the latest step. In Rockland, we’re making progress in the war on drugs with overdose deaths in our County down 50% compared to the beginning of last year. Our Department of Mental Health says the decrease is a credit to the combined effort of everything being done to combat the crisis countywide, which the County hopes to bolster with these settlement funds. Rockland will use the settlement funds for new initiatives including launching our 311 Behavioral Health Helpline, a dedicated helpline staffed by trained clinicians that will be available 24/7 to provide support and referrals, and medical screenings and intervention using the SBIRT (Screening Brief Intervention Referral to Treatment) method to strengthen prevention, early intervention, and treatment of opioid use. Rockland will continue to partner with local providers to distribute Fentanyl test strips, conduct Narcan trainings and provide peer support. Our County also will continue to strengthen our detoxification, inpatient rehabilitation, and intensive outpatient services, and so much more. However, I know we can do better, and we will do better because losing even one life to this epidemic is one life too many. Anyone fighting this crisis will never have to fight it alone, and I encourage you to check out the resources available by following this link: http://rocklandgov.com/departments/mental-health/.

You won’t want to miss the Sounds in the Round event coming to town! A group of talented local songwriters will be performing their music at the event which will take place at the Gentle Giant Brewing Company in Pearl River on Monday May 16th from 7:00-9:00 PM. Rockland County is home to many creative residents, a number of whom can be seen playing your favorite covers of popular music at local venues on any given day. Rockland County Times spoke with Allison Cipris, creator of the event and member of Country Fresh band. “As a singer/songwriter myself with ties to Nashville, I noticed that there really weren’t many opportunities for local songwriters to perform their music in front of a live audience in our area,” said Cipris. Cipris came up with the event with the hopes of creating a sense of community and support for local musicians who live far from big music cities like Nashville and Austin, where their craft is celebrated. Country Fresh has been going on for seven years. “We had the idea of creating a country band after noticing that there weren’t really that many country bands around here in this area,” said Cipris. During COVID in 2020, a lot of musicians lost a lot of work. However, they were able to perform through livestream which helped combat the issues of getting their craft out to the public. Fast for-

ward to now, live performances are coming back around, including Sounds in the Round. Cipris was able to provide some advice for those who are having a hard time returning back into the performing world. “Tap into your musician friends as a resource, go to open mics and keep reaching out.” She also explained that she noticed that there are venues looking for new acts, and they want performers back as much as they want to return. Cipris stresses the importance of supporting the arts in Rockland County. “People need art in our lives, it makes our lives easier and puts our minds in a better place whenever we’re immersed in art of any form.” Cipris is hoping with the support of Rockland residents, that Sounds in the Round won’t just be a one-time event. She and other musical artists believe that our community coming together as a unit will help support the arts tremendously. The featured songwriters at the event will be local favorites, which includes Alice Leon (The Al’s), Allison Cipris (Country Fresh), Rory D’Lasnow, and Dave Kopec (Franklin Turnpike). County Legislature Fights For Healthy Lungs Fewer people are smoking, but too many lives are still being lost to lung cancer, a fact the American Lung Association will highlight during this year’s Turquoise Takeover – a week set aside to promote good lung health through awareness, education and early detection. The week of May 8 through May 14 has been declared Turquoise Takeover Week in Rockland County, with County Legislator Aney Paul presenting a special proclamation to the American Lung Association. It was accepted by the director of POW’R Against Tobacco, a grant program of the ALA, Meghan DuBois O’Connor. “Lung cancer claims the lives of more people each year than breast, colon and prostate cancer combined, making it the number one cancer killer in the U.S.,” Legislator Paul said. “While some people are living longer, too many are losing their lives to lung cancer.” The ALA’s Lung Force encourages people to wear the color turquoise to help raise awareness about lung disease and to show support for those living with it. The organization works to ensure fewer people are diagnosed and that those living with lung cancer live longer. The American Cancer Society estimates about 236,740 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. this year, and that there will be about 130,180 deaths. Although smoking is the main culprit in lung cancer, anyone can get lung cancer, including those who never smoked, said Legislator Paul, who holds a Doctorate in Nursing Practice and has been a nurse for more than 30 years. In addition to tobacco use, risk factors can include exposure to radon, an odorless, colorless gas that can

build up in homes and workplaces, and air pollution. Rockland County Legislature Chairman Jay Hood Jr., who signed the Proclamation and spoke at the ceremony, personally understands the impact of lung cancer. “My father had lung cancer and passed away 10 years ago,” Legislator Hood said. “It is a devastating disease, both to the person afflicted and to their family anfriends. I appreciate all of the important work being done to try to prevent future cases.” Legislator Toney Earl also participated in the presentation. “Although the incidence of lung cancer among Black women is about 16 percent lower than among white women, Black men are 12 percent more likely to develop lung cancer than white men,” Legislator Earl said. “It’s something to be aware of and to get checked if you are having any problems with your lungs.” Legislator Paul has worked to successfully pass local laws related to smoking, including banning electronic cigarettes in public facilities such as restaurants, bars and other places where tobacco use is prohibited. One of her most successful efforts resulted in the passage of a County law that bans the sale of all tobacco products to those under the age of 21, a law later adopted on the state level. The law bans the sale of not only cigarettes and cigars but chewing tobacco and electronic cigarettes, or ecigs, which have become popular among young people despite growing concerns about the health impacts. The law is meant to put a halt to smoking for youths before they ever get started.

Rockland County punches above its weight when it comes to track and field.” Hepburn Bailey, class of 2005, was a three-time State champ in the hurdles, two-time Nationals medalist, and the County record holder in the 100-meter hurdles. Quimby Liberman, class of 2001, earned State meet gold in the 600 meters and on Suffern’s 4x400 relay, was a two-time Eastern Stateschampion indoors, and made first-team All-County five straight years. Brentnall, class of 1953, won three Rockland and Section 9 titles apiece in the 880 or mile, was undefeated against Rockland milers for two years, and served many years as athletic director at Suffern. Allen, class of 1966, was a six-time Rockland and six-time Section 9 champ in the 100, 220 and 880 relay, ran the secondfastest 100-yard dash of any Rocklander, and placed third as a leg on the 880 relay at the State meet. Cook, class of 1948, came in third in the long jump at the 1948 State meet, set a County record in the 440 (52.8), and remained on the Rockland top 10 list in the long jump (22-6 ¼) for 63 years. He died in the Korean War at age 20 and is buried with military honors at Mount Moor Cemetery. Lake, class of 1952, finished third in the State meet at 220 yards and won four County titles in the sprint events. Murphy coached at North Rockland for close to 30 years, guiding seven New York State champions in the throws and 20 Rockland County shot-put titleholders from 1971 to 2001. The Nyack 880 relay team of Jerry Blow, Shulton Whitley, Willie Taylor and Otto Pearson set a County record (1:28.9) that stood for 30 years and finished second in the State meet. Bleeding Out: NY Blood Center Faces Shortage of Donnations New York Blood Center (NYBC) announced a blood emergency today due to an alarming drop in blood donations over the past 6 weeks. Contributing factors include recent school spring breaks and holiday travel, coupled with a two-year period of almost no youth donations during the pandemic. All blood types are low and type O is at just a 1-to-2-day level. This shortage occurs amid increasing COVID rates, which can be attributed to the highly contagious Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1 that has been spreading rapidly throughout New York and surrounding areas. For example, last week New York City’s COVID transmission rate had increased 32%. Last Monday, the city raised its COVID alert level to medium as cases surpassed a rate of 200 per 100,000 people in the five boroughs. Hospitals and patients rely upon a steady flow of volunteer donors to receive life-saving blood donations, but the recent spike in cases and spring break travel has caused uncertainty. Donor participation has reached record lows at blood drives and donor centers. “Memorial Day marks the start of summer, when it becomes even more difficult to get donors in. We need more donations to prepare for this period but our supply is currently very low,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director at New York Blood Center. “We are asking New Yorkers to sign up and donate. One blood donation has the ability to save up to three lives. We highly encourage all who are able to donate today to help the New Yorkers who need it most.” It only takes one hour to donate, and a single donation can save multiple lives. Roughly one in seven hospital admissions require a blood transfusion. Those in need include: cancer patients, accident, burn, or trauma victims, transplant recipients, surgery patients, chronically transfused patients suffering from sickle cell disease or thalassemia, and many more. To make an appointment at this blood drive, donors can call 1-800-933-2566 or by visiting nybc.org.

NYC Subway’s Underground Hit New York City Subway set a new record for pandemic-era single-day ridership on Thursday, May 5, carrying 3,497,122 riders. According to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, this record beats the previous pandemic-era record set on December 9, 2021 when the subway carried 3.42 million and surpasses a pre-pandemic ridership figure of 3.491 million on the subway observed on March 13, 2020. To encourage ridership, the MTA has implemented a new farecapping pilot program that make fares more affordable and flexible. The cap on weekly fares through the OMNY contact less payment system includes a “Lucky 13” feature, in which starting with the 13th ride of each week, every additional ride on subways or buses is free for the rest of that week. The MTA has expressed confidence in the rebound and is anticipating a gradual return to pre pandemic levels of use. “New Yorkers are coming back to the system because mass transit is the best way to move around the city and with our OMNY farecapping options using the system has never been easier,” said MTA Chair Janno Lieber. “In partnership with the Governor, Mayor and NYPD, we are addressing safety issues and riders are starting to respond.” Prior to the pandemic, average weekday ridership totals routinely exceeded 5.5 million in the subway system. That figure fell by 95 percent to a low of roughly 300,000 daily trips in April 2020 as the number of COVID-19 cases peaked in the New York City area.

Star Stuck to Counter at Starbucks Actor and activist James Cromwell made headlines on Tuesday after the 82-year-old glued his hand to the counter of a Manhattan Starbucks in protest of the companies extra charge for plant based milk. Famous for his roles in “Babe: Pig in the City” and “The Green Mile,” Cromwell also has a distinguished career as an animal rights activist; the Oscar nominated actor cooperated with the controversial protest group PETA (people for the ethical treatment of animals) to coordinate his most recent protest and in 2017 was arrested for interrupting an orca show at SeaWorld in San Diego. On Tuesday, Cromwell sat on the Starbucks counter wearing a “Free the Animals” T-shirt and read a statement denouncing the surcharge for vegan milk alternatives, which was streamed live on Facebook by his fellow activists. “When will you stop raking in huge profits while customers, animals and the environment suffer?” he demanded while accusing the coffee conglomerate of “discriminating” against customers who cannot consume dairy products. Starbucks outlets in the U.S. charge 50 cents to a dollar more for drinks made with plant-based milks. While he made quite the spectacle, Cromwell drew the line at criminal behavior and used a knife to free his hand from the

counter when law enforcement arrived at the scene. Police said that no arrests were made. Starbucks later released a statement explaining there pricing decisions stating, a company spokesperson staying: “Customers can customize any beverage on the menu with a non-dairy milk, including soymilk, coconutmilk, almondmilk, and oatmilk for an additional cost (similar to other beverage customizations such as an additional espresso shot or syrup),” “Pricing varies market by market.” The spokesperson said Starbucks respects customers’ right to voice their opinions “so long as it does not disrupt our store operations.”

Al Jazeera journalist killed in West Bank Horrible news: A veteran Palestinian-American correspondent for Al Jazeera, Shireen Abu Aqla, has been killed on Wednesday morning on May 11 while covering a raid by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank. Another Palestinian journalist, Ali al-Samoudi, was wounded in the back but is in stable condition. “We were going to film the Israeli army operation and suddenly they shot us without asking us to leave or stop filming,” said al-Samoudi. Shatha Hanaysha, a local journalist who was standing next to Abu Akleh when she was shot, also told Al Jazeera that there had been no confrontations between Palestinian fighters and the Israeli army. She said the group of journalists had been directly targeted. She was rushed to a hospital in Jenin in critical condition, where she was declared dead shortly after, at 7:15am (4:15 GMT), according to the ministry and Al Jazeera journalists. Abu Akleh was wearing a press vest and was standing with other journalists when she was killed. “There was no Palestinian military resistance at all at the scene,” he added. Video of the shooting showed Abu Aqla was wearing a blue flak jacket clearly marked with the word “press”, as well as a helmet. Israel’s prime minister said it was “likely” they were shot by Palestinian gunmen during an exchange of fire. But his military chief said it was not yet able to determine what happened. The Palestinian president said he held the Israeli government fully responsible for what he described as a “crime of execution”. A statement from Al Jazeera said: “In a blatant murder, violating international laws and norms, the Israeli Occupation Forces assassinated in cold blood Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Palestine, Shireen Abu Aqla, targeting her with live fire early thismorning... while conducting her journalistic duty.” Grief and sorrow filled the Al Jazeera offices in downtown Ramallah as the news quickly spread and dozens of colleagues, fellow journalists, friends, and Palestinian figures poured in, including Palestinian politicians Hanan Ashrawi and Khalida Jarrar.

Hoehm Town

Happenings By Supervisor George Hoehmann

Carry the Load: A Unique Clarkstown Tradition Carry the Load is a national organization founded by veterans to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day. The notfor-profit has since expanded its mission to provide meaningful ways to honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving our great country in law enforcement. Another one of those ways is through its annual National Flag Relay that travels 2,100 miles each year, from West Point to Texas carrying the American flag. This year, the tenth in Carry the Load history, the program was expanded and now has seven flag walks that span the entire country. Each of these walks culminates in Austin, Texas at a park adjacent to the Carry the Load headquarters on May 30th, which was the traditional date of Memorial Day. Clarkstown is fortunate to be one of the locations where a changing of the flag occurs, right in downtown Congers. We have built an event complete with the laying of a wreath, and Honor Guard presentation. Each year hundreds of residents including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Little Leagues, Veterans, and elected officials march with Carry the Load into the Congers Train Station Park. This has become a significant event in our Town as we all join together to remember those who’ve been lost serving our country. It is heartening to see families bring their children out to remember and honor our true heroes. This is how we teach future generations about Memorial Day, about the true sacrifice many have made. Last week, despite the inclement weather, hundreds still came out to participate in this meaningful event. The groups included the Congers, Valley Cottage and Nyack Little League, the Congers VMA, Nam Knights and several Boy and Girl Scout Troops. I marched with members of the Town Board and the Highway Superintendent alongside these groups. We traveled from Old Haverstraw Road at Patricia Avenue down to the Congers Train Station Park on Burnside Avenue. We held a somber ceremony at the park, followed by a BBQ and music. This year poignantly, the Gold Star family of Marine Cpl. Steven Vahaviolos stood apart from the crowd to quietly mourn and remember their son who died in Afghanistan in 2006. It was a stark reminder that freedom is indeed never free and the cost is all too high. The ultimate price paid is the blood and lost lives of the 1,354,664 men and women who have died in service with the Armed Forces of the United States since the founding of our country. To coincide with the event, Anchor Media Services sponsored a scholarship asking High School Seniors, “What does Memorial Day Mean to You?”. Each year we receive well prepared essays from students. The Scholarship Committee is always impressed with the sincerity of the students’ essays, and their understanding of the true meaning of Memorial Day. This year, Thomas Fantry, an Albertus Magnus High School student wrote eloquently about the meaning of Memorial Day and was awarded the $5,000 scholarship out of a field of 25 entries. Many local veterans also joined us in Congers to remember their fallen comrades. There were WWII, Korean, Vietnam and War on Terror Vets present, many of whom had lost their brothers in arms. Sadness was reflected in the eyes of these vets, who in their own way grieve, for those that have been lost. Carry the Load also gives us a chance to thank both the fallen and the living for their service. On a personal note, my father was a veteran who served in Korea and passed away in 2000. Like many veterans, he didn’t talk much about his time in the service. He came home having survived the horrors of combat and worked to build a family and life. I have always been so proud of him. I am thankful to honor him and the many other veterans in our Town that I have had the privilege to know, at this event. This event reminds me why Clarkstown is such a special place to live. I am proud to see us all come together each year to honor our heroes in this way. I hope you continue to join us. Let’s keep bringing our children to these types of events, teaching them about sacrifice and freedom. Thank you to all the volunteers, BRiDGES of Rockland County, the Congers VMA, Congers, Valley Cottage and New City Fire Departments, the Clarkstown Police Honor Guard and Police Auxiliary, Town of Clarkstown staff, U.S. Marine Corp League of Rockland County, Rockland County Vietnam Veterans and the Nam Knights for participating and helping with the event. I look forward to the upcoming ceremonies, parades and Watch Fires that like Carry the Load, all highlight the true meaning of Memorial Day. I hope to see many of you at these events. Together we’ll remember the fallen and offer our gratitude for the freedom we enjoy at the cost of so many American Soldiers who willingly paid the ultimate price with their lives.

CDC investigating mysterious outbreak of severe hepatitis in children This week the CDC issued a nationwide health alert to notify clinicians and public health authorities about a cluster of children identified with hepatitis and adenovirus infection – and to ask all physicians to be on the lookout for symptoms and to report any suspected cases of hepatitis of unknown origin to their local and state health departments. Laboratory tests identified that some of the children had adenovirus type 41, which is more likely to cause severe stomach illness in children. Although there have been previous reports of hepatitis in children with suppressed immune systems who were infected with adenovirus, adenovirus type 41 is not a common cause of hepatitis in otherwise healthy children. Other common causes of viral hepatitis, such as infection with hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E viruses were considered, but evidence for these infections were not found in any of the patients. CDC is asking healthcare providers to consider testing for adenovirus in pediatric patients with hepatitis of unknown origin, and to report any possible cases of hepatitis to their local or state public health authorities. CDC is working closely with laboratories around the country to determine the best testing practices. CDC will share additional information as it becomes available. We are making recommendations for healthcare providers and laboratories about how to submit specimens for testing. CDC is also engaging public health partner organizations to share information and make sure we are prepared to diagnose and treat additional cases. CDC will work with these partners to quickly disseminate a list of laboratories able to do adenovirus testing or typing.

All in With John Jastremski Nasty Nestor Is No Fluke By John Jastremski There are always certain types of guys that fan bases just fall in love with. The classic overachiever, the home-grown star, or maybe it’s just someone oozing confidence and swagger. It’s pretty obvious to point out the type. Last year, the Yankee fan base fell in love with Nestor Cortez. Cortes came out of nowhere. He pitched with the Yankees in 2019, left the team in 2020 and returned in 2021. Cortes profiled as your classic lefty journeymen pitcher, and I’m sure his return to the team wasn’t exactly celebrated. However, midway through the 2021 season, the Yankees needed someone to step up in their rotation. Nestor Cortes took on that role. He went from being the really good long reliever to a pitcher Aaron Boone could rely on more and more starting out games. The Yankees would not have made the postseason last year without his contribution to the rotation.

Cortes won over fans with his strong performance, but it was more than that. Nestor Cortes has a flair and a presence on the mound. The way he changes speeds, the funky leg kick and then you throw in the mustache! How can you not love Nestor Cortes??? Heading into the 2022 season, I wondered if Cortes could do it again? After all, I remember Aaron Small and Shaun Chacon. Small and Chacon were instrumental in the Yankee’s division title in 2005 and were both cut midway through 2006. A month plus into 2022, Cortes has made it clear. 2021 was no fluke. Cortes is the first pitcher in Yankee history with at least 40 strikeouts and 6 runs or fewer allowed in his first 6 games of the season. On Monday, Cortes took a no hitter into the 8th inning against the Texas Rangers and was sensational. Believe it or not, I received a text from a Yankee fan telling me he’d prefer Cortes start the Yankees playoff game over ace Gerrit Cole! I’m not willing to go that far, but I am willing to say. Nestor Cortes is for real. The stash, the leg kick, the swagger. I’m sold. Nasty Nestor is no fluke.

Family owned circus thrills Rockland residents

By Jess Warren

Our publication also spoke with Alexa Vazquez, a performer in the circus whose family startedthe Vazquez Circus in Mexico in 1969. “I think the best part about being a part of the circus is that you get to travel to different places and also the artists come from different parts of the world, so you get to experience different cultures, learn new languages and try new food every year.” Upcoming Event Dates & Times: Thursday) 5/12 -7:30-9:30 PM Friday) 5/13- 7:30-9:30 PM Saturday) 5/14- 12:00-3:00 PM, 3:00-5:00 PM, 7:009:00 PM Sunday) 5/15- 12:00-3:00 PM , 3:00-5:00 PM, 6:00-8:00 PM Monday) 5/16- 7:30-9:30 PM

Reporter Jess Warren with performers Dede Larible and Alexa Vazquez

The FLIP Circus just kicked off their first show in Rockland County on Friday May 6 at 7:30 at the back parking lot of the Shops of Nanuet (5101 Fashion Drive, Nanuet, NY). The circus will be performing from May 6-16, so don’t miss out on the adventure that is for the whole family. World-class clowns, acrobats, jugglers and daredevils display their talents right in frontof them as no audience member is more than 50 feet from the ring. The Rockland County Times got to speak with Dede Larible, professional juggler from the event.“I started juggling when I was 6, and within time I practiced and got better each day,” said Larible. “The nicest part about doing what I do is seeing people enjoy what I do, and that’s what an artist lives for. We like to make them happy and it’s our life. I recommend people to come see the magic happen with your own eyes.”

For tickets and additional information, please visit www.FlipCircus.com. Tickets start at $25.00 (children) and $40.00 (adults) with senior/military/handicap discounts available. Tickets will also be available in person at the box office during each engagement. The health and safety of FLIP Circus’ cast, crew and audience is of the utmost importance. The company adheres to all national, state and city COVID-19 guidelines and has put in place numerous measures inside and outside their tent to ensure compliance and the safety of all.

Cupon’s Column Working with local government

Citizens United to Protect Our Neighborhoods, CUPON, is an all-volunteer organization formed in 2015 by a group of concerned residents in response to over development. CUPON’s primary focus is land use and monitoring of building and fire codes. Most of us take for granted that our homes, schools, and workplaces are structurally safe, and have fire exits and proper equipment in the unlikely event of an emergency. Local building and fire inspectors and code enforcers employed by local and state governments are primarily responsible for ensuring the safety of all structures and thus our loved ones. CUPON works closely with like-minded organizations including but not limited to The Rockland County Illegal Housing Task Force, ROSA 4 Rockland, Fire Companies, local governments, and their Planning and Zoning Boards where possible. CUPON members have encountered slumlord owned facilities over the years that systemically avoid implementing health and safety codes that endanger the lives of residents. Numerous single-family residences have been illegally converted to rooming houses, dormitories, apartments, and businesses. It isn’t unusual for attics, basements, and garages to be rented out as living space. CUPON has seen how dangerous and illegal housing has greatly increased in recent years, as they are very lucrative for the slumlords. Lack of oversight from the code enforcement officials often results in overcrowded and dangerous conditions, and sometimes deaths. CUPON and the Illegal Housing Task Force have notified numerous Village, Town, County, and New York State Agencies and Officials of countless zoning violations and illegal construction. Responsible municipalities address the issues, but irresponsible municipalities ignore them. CUPON has initiated legal actions against some of these irresponsible municipalities. Despite CUPON’s efforts to remedy the lack of enforcement of health and safety laws and codes in some municipalities, we have encountered a systemic failure by multiple agencies at all levels of government. CUPON has observed that many elected and appointed senior officials are using their power and authority to prohibit employees from enforcing the regulations. CUPON has reached out to the media to expose those agencies and officials. Despite excellent and accurate reporting in various forms of media including newspapers, television news, radio and social media very little has changed. The first time we were made aware of this type of interference from the upper levels of the New York State Government took place 19 years ago. In 2003, then State Senator Tom Morahan organized a large meeting to explore the reasons behind the lack of enforcement. While being questioned, the Commissioner of the New York State Building and Fire Codes Division stated that he must get permission from the “second floor” (in Albany). He also stated that the violations he was observing in Rockland were the worst he had seen in his 40 years with the department. Many at the meeting were puzzled by the reference to the “second floor”. The Commissioner shocked many attendees by saying that the Governor’s office is on the 2nd floor; meaning that the Governor was responsible for the restraints that were imposed on his department. Since that 2003 meeting, several other Commissioners have experienced similar situations, particularly under the Cuomo administration. Some Commissioners or their assistants have stated that they were constrained from enforcement by attorneys for the Governor or the New York Secretary of State. After numerous attempts to get the State to address the serious and rapidly expanding problems in Rockland, we reached out to our County Executive, Ed Day. To his credit, Mr. Day initiated some very innovative changes to his office of Consumer Protection as well as the Rockland Code Investigations Program (RCI), administered by the Rockland County Health Dept. As the result of numerous letters and complaints from the Illegal Housing Taskforce to the NYS Building and Codes Department, the Rockland County government was authorized to takeover Code Enforcement in Spring Valley. This has met with some success, but it is only putting a small dent in the overall problems facing our communities. CUPON and the Illegal Housing Taskforce have brought many ideas to the Rockland County Executive and his staff; some of which he has acted on, many he has not. Changes we hope Mr. Day will implement include: - partnering with the Illegal Housing Taskforce and CUPON to use the historical knowledge gained from the residents to identify zoning violations and illegal housing. - Require illegal construction to be removed - Establish a task force to identify slumlords and their LLCs, and target their holdings - Work with the State and Federal government to expose this underground economy -Dramatically increase the financial penalties on these slumlords by working in tandem with other agencies. -Address and take on the dysfunctional State and Federal Agencies much more aggressively. In early January of 2022, the Chairman of the Rockland County Illegal Housing Task Force wrote a letter to our new Governor requesting that her administration intercede here in Rockland. He has not received a response. CUPON will go into more detail to explain the lack of enforcement and government interference in upcoming columns. Please keep reading. Health Department Treats Catch Basins And Stomrdrains for Mosquito Control Rockland County Executive Ed Day and County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert have announced that the Health Department will be treating catch basins and storm drains to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in standing water inside of these structures. If you see Health Department staff on the roads driving slowly in County vehicles doing these treatments, please be patient. Also, try to avoid parking over storm drains while these employees are doing the treatment work so that they can access the catch basins more easily. "Not all mosquitos carry diseases, but several species can sometimes spread potentially dangerous diseases like West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) to humans," said Dr. Ruppert. The best and most effective mosquito control begins in your yard. Eliminating standing water is the first step in reducing the mosquito threat. Residents can help by regularly checking their property for ANY items that can hold stagnant water, such as plant saucers, dog bowls, and birdbaths, and replace them with fresh water daily. Remove objects around your yard that collect water. Anything you choose to keep outside, such as kids' toys, buckets, wading pools, canoes, and wheelbarrows, should be flipped over when not used to prevent them from collecting any water. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. The eggs hatch into larvae that develop in the water for 7 to 10 days before emerging as adult mosquitoes that fly and bite. Since the West Nile virus outbreak in 1999, the Health Department has been collecting, identifying, and tracking mosquitoes in their adult and larval stages and providing education to the public to reduce the mosquito population. The Mosquito Control Program focuses on reducing Rockland's mosquito population at the larval stage during the spring and summer months by identifying and monitoring a variety of mosquito-breeding sites, including roadside catch basins. Program staff also conduct routine and complaint-based inspections at many commercial properties that are considered "high risk" for mosquito breeding, including tire-storage facilities, landscape yards, municipal storage yards, outdoor swimming pool facilities, horse farms, marinas, and garden centers, as well as respond to complaints against private residential properties. "Mosquitoes are more than just a nuisance, they also spread dangerous diseases including Zika and West Nile virus. We ask that families do their part by eliminating any standing water on their property where mosquitos could breed," said County Executive Day. For more information, call the Health Department at 845364-3173 or visit http://bit.ly/RCDOH_mosquito

Content creator and musician from Haverstraw impacts society through social media platforms

By Jess Warren

Jevohan Barnes, also known as HovaBeats, is a Rockland native looking to motivate his fellow artists . How does he do that? Through social media platforms and creating content online. Currently, the creator has over three social media platforms, which includes his new brand, “Motivation is Key NY”, which was established in June 2021. Other platforms include 2020 Artists on The Come Up, HovaBeats, and Battlezone Barz. Barnes has future plans of creating a showcase for other like-minded artists so that they can come together and collaborate on their creations. “I want to be more active with the community,” said Barnes. He also has close ties with Haverstraw’s VOH Basketball league, which was established in 2013 by Sean Stanley, also known as Bread Bronson or Wunda. What Stanley and Barnes have in common is that they are both musical artists from the Haverstraw area. “I always commend him (Stanley) because he paved the way for our community and for our people who have basketball dreams, or even those who play because they love the sport,” said Barnes. He has plans of establishing his own team in the near future at the Haverstraw Community Center. Before music came into play, the North Rockland Alumni by playing sports. He credits his motivation to play sports which opened a door to more opportunities for his music and fashion endeavors. You can catch him practicing his basketball skills at the Haverstraw Community Center, which has plans of being extended as a state-of-the-art outdoor fitness court with the support of MVP Health Care and National Fitness Campaign (NFC). Barnes knew that he wanted to get involved with musical production in 2012, but it wasn’t until 2016 that he started making beats to songs, and then competing in beat battles as a result. Recently, Barnes was selected on famous hip-hop artist Fat Joe’s project, “Connected, Vol. 2.” where he got to put out his produced song, “4 Da Hometown”, which is a reference to the Rockland/Haverstraw area. “Life is life, so you just have to make the best of it and leave your legacy, create one, and just pass it on to upcoming generations,” said Barnes. Barnes continues to stay heavily involved in the music community as he is a co-owner of the rapping contest, Battlezone Barz, along with Matt Rivera, also known as Cheap Wrestler. They have been hosting a lot of quarantine battles, but are happy to start attending new events in person. On June 18, American Coliseum Wrestling (ACW) will be coming to Haverstraw to team up with Battlezone Barz at around 1:35 PM before their wrestling event begins. Don’t miss out on the community fun!

State-of-the-Art Outdoor Fitness Court Coming to the Haverstraw Community Center Rockland County is ranked the seventh healthiest county in New York. On Tuesday May 10, MVP Health Care, the Village of Haverstraw, and National Fitness Campaign (NFC) announced a partnership to bring a free, outdoor Fitness Court® to the Village of Haverstraw. The Fitness Court, located adjacent to the Haverstraw Community Center, will open this summer with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The MVP Health Care Fitness Court will provide the community with increased access to outdoor exercise programs. The MVP Health Care Fitness Court in the Village of Haverstraw is a result of a partnership between MVP Health Care and NFC to expand free access to high quality workouts for communities around the state. The Fitness Court is a free, open-air wellness center that allows users to leverage their own body weight to get a complete workout. Created with adults of all ages and ability in mind, the workouts are adaptable for all fitness levels and allow users to move at their own pace. Users can also download the free Fitness Court app, which acts as a coach-in-your-pocket and transforms the outdoor gym into a digitally supported wellness ecosystem. “The launch of the MVP Health Care Fitness Court in the Village of Haverstraw is a step towards providing access to resources that can change the trajectory of someone’s health and wellness journey,” said MVP Health Care’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Chris Del Vecchio. “As a leading health care services company, investing in our local communities and offering new, innovative wellness options like the Fitness Court reinforces our commitment to giving back to the people we serve and places we call home. We are proud to partner with NFC and the Village of Haverstraw to bring this unique opportunity to the local community and look forward to seeing you on the Fitness Court.” “The Village is excited to see the MVP Health Care Fitness Court come to fruition and provide our residents with a free exercise alternative that can be used year-round in the fresh air,” said Village Mayor, Michael Kohut. “Although it has been a few years in the making, with assistance from MVP Health Care, and all our other partners, Haverstraw is ready to make this court a reality and start making a vastly improved outdoor recreation area next to the Haverstraw Center.” “We’re excited to bring our campaign to make world-class fitness free to the Village of Haverstraw,” said Mitch Menaged, Founder of National Fitness Campaign. “Together with the Village and MVP Health Care, NFC is happy to be part of a wellness network growing across the nation.” Construction of the Fitness Court has begun and will be completed early this summer. The FDA’s Closer to Zero Plan Is Ineffective, Lengthy, and Causing an Imminent Health Crisis On February 4, 2021, the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy made public the results of a report concerning the presence of heavy metals in infant and toddler food. What prompted the investigation was a previous study conducted by the non-profit organization Healthy Babies Bright Futures, whose results showed that up to 95% of the baby food on the market contains at least one heavy metal of the four problematic ones, namely arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. The findings of the congressional report sparked outrage in parents, and for good reason. Seven major baby food manufacturers were asked to participate in the investigation by making available the results of their internal studies on the levels of heavy metals in their ingredients and finished products. However, only four agreed to collaborate with the investigators, more specifically Beech-Nut Nutrition Company, Gerber, Hain Celestial Group, and Nurture, whereas Campbell, Sprout Organic Foods, and Walmart refused to share their internal documents. Because there were baby food companies that did not want to be part of the investigation, the Subcommittee stated that it is “greatly concerned that their lack of cooperation might be obscuring the presence of even higher levels of toxic heavy metals in their baby food products than their competitors’ products.” Parents are highly alarmed concerning the content of heavy metals in baby food because exposure to arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury has been linked to autism, among many other neurological disorders. Once these toxic metals enter the body, they act as neurotoxins, attacking the nervous system and brain of the person. Children are especially susceptible to experience the adverse health effects of heavy metal exposure because they are still developing and have undeveloped detoxification systems. Roughly 2% of children live with autism at the moment in the United States, and 1 out of 54 babies born after 2008 eventually develop the disorder. Perhaps the most disturbing thing about this situation is that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has no regulations for heavy metals in baby food except for arsenic in infant rice cereal. Even so, the safe limit the agency set for this toxic metal is 100 ppb (parts per billion), which is considered very high by most health agencies. Attempting to solve the issue of heavy metals in baby food, the FDA came up with the Closer to Zero plan, which would set limits for all four heavy metals only in 2024 or even later. For this reason, the strategy proposed by the agency has been heavily criticized for being loose and ineffective, as well as for not entailing aggressive enough timelines. Nevertheless, a glimpse of hope for parents of infants and toddlers would be the Baby Food Safety Act of 2021, which, if it becomes effective, would immediately set maximum allowable limits for heavy metals in baby food. It would also involve the FDA to a greater degree in making decisions on the safest toxic metals limits. It would make it mandatory for facilities that handle baby food in any way to be more transparent about their internal practices. The Congressional Report’s Findings: Appalling and Unexpected Before exposing some of the most shocking findings of the Congressional Reports’ investigation, it is paramount to be aware of the safe limits of each of the four problematic heavy metals in baby food to comprehend how serious the issue is. Accordingly, the limit is 10 ppb for arsenic, cadmium 5 ppb, lead 5 ppb, and mercury 2 ppb. Over 100 ppb arsenic was found in 25% of the products Nurture allowed to go on the market, whereas Hain Celestial Group used ingredients with a concentration of arsenic as high as 309 ppb. As for Beech-Nut, the company was the most negligent concerning arsenic, as the heavy metal exceeded 900 ppb in some of the ingredients the manufacturer used. While Beech-Nut included in its baby food ingredients with more than 880 ppb lead, Hain Celestial Group used ingredients with up to 352 ppb lead. Still, Nurture is the company whose internal test results were the most concerning regarding lead, as the investigators found that some of its products contained over 640 ppb lead. When it comes to cadmium, some of the ingredients Beech-Nut used had a concentration of more than 340 ppb, and Hain Celestial Group included some ingredients testing up to 260 ppb cadmium in its baby food. Furthermore, some carrots Gerber used to make baby foodcontained 87 ppb cadmium. Lastly, most companies admitted to rarely testing for mercury, if at all. “My Subcommittee’s investigation has pulled back the curtain on the baby foods industry, and each revelation has been more damning than the last,” said Chairman Raja Krishnamoorthi. “Companies not only under-report the high levels of toxic content in their baby food but also knowingly keep toxic products on the market,” he added. Brian Ronholm, director of food policy at Consumer Reports, believes that “removing these products from the market would be the most effective approach to address this issue and provide assurances to parents and caregivers.” So far, only two baby food companies have voluntarily recalled products from the shelves. In April 2021, Maple Island Inc. recalled three lots of Walmart’s Parent’s Choice Rice Baby Cereal, while in June, Beech-Nut recalled one lot of Beech-Nut Stage 1, Single Grain Rice Cereal. Both recalls were issued because the products had too much arsenic. The FDA’s Closer to Zero Plan Is Loose, Ineffective, and Dangerously Slow to Take Effect The FDA promises to implement a “science-based, iterative approach for decreasing exposure to toxic elements from food,” known as the Closer to Zero plan. Although this is a laudable initiative, the agency has thought that this strategy is far from effective and rapid. Because the issue of heavy metals in baby food is extremely severe, immediate measures to mitigate the risk of children ingesting harmful substances must be taken. The Closer to Zero plan has four steps, two of which are unnecessary, as they refer to determining the interim reference levels for the four heavy metals. These steps are redundant because there are plentiful national and international health agencies that have already discovered the maximum level for each toxic metal in baby food. It is only the third step of the Closer to Zero plan that entails something useful, namely assessing the achievability and feasibility of the action levels, as the FDA has to make sure every baby food manufacturer can keep the content of heavy metals in their products within the safe limit by using practices such as sourcing rice from crops where the soil has a low concentration of this toxic metal. The fourth step of the FDA’s strategy involves finalizing the action levels, which, once again, is unnecessary, as it can be completed before the third. Moreover, the Closer to Zero plan of the FDA has additional shortcomings, such as failing to consider the cumulative effect of toxic metals on neurodevelopment when establishing limits, to move up the deadlines for draft action levels for arsenic and cadmium, and to define what “as low as possible” and “children’s food” mean. In the Closer to Zero plan, the FDA’s deadline to propose draft action levels for arsenic is April 2024, and there are no deadlines for cadmium and mercury. Consequently, those timelines need to be accelerated. This is what made a coalition of 24 Attorneys General from 23 states petition the FDA on October 21, 2021, urging the agency to set interim proposed action levels right away and prioritize children’s safety, health, and wellbeing of children. “Every day and across the country, baby food companies are selling products containing dangerous levels of lead and other toxic metals, and urgent action is needed to stop it. There are common-sense, science-based actions that can drive down the levels of heavy metals in baby foods, which is why we are calling on the FDA to take these actions as soon as possible”, said Attorney General Letitia James the leader of the coalition. The Baby Food Safety Act Could Solve the Baby Food Contamination Crisis A bill known as the Baby Food Act of 2021 was introduced in the House by Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi on March 26, 2021. Should it pass the Senate and become law, it would immediately set maximum limits for arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury in baby food, defined as products for 36 months or younger children. “For too long, the industry has been allowed to self-regulate baby food safety, and the results have been appalling and extremely harmful to our kids. We will not stand for that any longer,” said Chairman Krishnamoorthi. The Baby Food Safety Act of 2021 would also require the FDA to set limits on other toxic agents upon reviewing the most recent health data. Additionally, facilities that handle infant and toddler food in any way would have to have certain controls and strategies to ensure that their products comply with the safety limits on heavy metals set by the bill. Finally, the Centers for Disease Control would have to carry out public awareness campaigns about the risks of toxic agents in baby food. Hopefully, the Baby Food Safety Act of 2021 will enter law as soon as possible. It is a considerably more feasible alternative to the Closer to Zero plan. It would spare infants and toddlers the constant worry about the harmful substances that might lurk in their children’s food.
