A Jedi Journey
A new threat to the Jedi way of life rises in “The Acolyte,” the latest addition to the Star Wars universe, when it premieres Tuesday, June 4, on Disney+. Following an investigation into a shocking crime spree, the series sees a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae, “Squid Game”) go head-to-head against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg, “The Hunger Games,” 2012). The Old Oak
The Old Oak is the last remaining pub in a village in northeast England. Once thriving with miners and their families, many moved away after the closure of the mines. The houses left behind at-
tract many Syrian refugees, creating tension among the locals. The empathy and compassion exhibited by TJ Ballantyne (Turner), the owner of The Old Oak, towards Yara (Mari), a young Syrian woman, challenges these hostilities as TJ and Yara bond over her love for photography and open up to one another. TJ shares photographs of what the village used to look like with her and the struggles many had faced living there. In turn, Yara shares with TJ the losses she suffered on her journey to be free. Last night [May 6] was the Met Gala. ... Every year, here in New York City, the Met throws the most exclusive and opulent party. Last night’s theme was the Garden of Time, based on a 1962 short story about elites living in a utopia of leisure, art and beauty while an encroaching and chaotic mob draws nearer every hour. A little on the nose, guys. I’m guessing next year’s theme is going to be “Ah! They’ve breached the doors! Quick, hide behind the Chagall!”

“Geek Girl” - Season 1
Based on the young adult novel of the same name by Holly Smale, the new comedy-drama “Geek Girl” premieres Thursday, May 30, on Netflix. Socially awkward and bullied at school, teenager Harriet Manners’ (Emily Carey, “House of the Dragon”) is desperate to fit in. But when Harriet finds herself thrust into the world of fashion, her life as she knows it is flipped completely upside down. Facing down “tightly wound agents, offbeat designers, impossibly high heels [and] a cute supermodel with a great smile,” Harriet has no idea what she’s in for, as her journey sets her up to learn more about herself and the world than she could have ever imagined. Co-created for television by Smale and Jessica Ruston (“Catch Me a Killer”), “Geek Girl” is directed by Declan O’Dwyer (“Miss Scarlet & The Duke”). The series also stars Sarah Parish (“Cutting It”), Jemima Rooper (“As If”), Tim Downie (“Outlander”), Sandra Yi Sencindiver (“Foundation”), Hebe Beardsall (“Unforgotten”) and new talent Madeleine Price. Furthermore, the series is executively produced by O’Dwyer, Rustin, Smale, Anthony Leo (“Todd and the Book of Pure Evil”), Andrew Rosen (“Holly Hobbie”), Jeff Norton (“Truck Town) and Robbie von Werz.
“Dancing for the Devil: The 7M TikTok Cult” There can’t be anything sinister behind all those viral dances you see while scrolling social media juggernaut TikTok, right? Well, think again. “Dancing for the Devil: The 7M TikTok Cult,” a three-episode docuseries from director Derek Doneen (“The Price of Free,” 2018), takes a deep-dive into one social media management group’s unsavory conduct when it premieres Wednesday, May 29, on Netflix. The docuseries covers the conduct 7M Films, first through the story of Miranda Wilking. Miranda has always been passionate about dance. So much, in fact, that she used that passion to find viral success on TikTok with her sister Melanie. Sometime in 2019, Miranda fell in with the Los Angeles-based management company, which is affiliated with the Shekinah Church where 7M owner Robert Shinn serves as a pastor. As a result, Miranda began spending more time with members of 7M, eventually cutting off contact with her family entirely. In addition to Miranda’s story, the series includes “the testimonies of dancers and others who fled 7M Films and are now working to take it down from outside” (per Netflix).
“Lainey Wilson: Bell Bottom Country”
From ABC News Studios, the new documentary-style special, “Lainey Wilson: Bell Bottom Country,” makes its debut Wednesday, May 29, on Hulu. Following country music sensation Lainey Wilson’s (“Country’s Cool Again”) rise to stardom, the special picks up with the singer-songwriter more than a decade into her journey. Growing up in the rural farming town of Baskin, Louisiana, Wilson, 32, moved to Nashville, Tennessee, America’s country music mecca, to pursue her dreams. After earning her first platinum-certified song, Wilson found herself “garnering a dedicated following worldwide, [captivating] fans with a unique blend of traditional country fused with a modern yet nostalgic style” (per ABC News Studios). Now, this new special takes an intimate look into her life, promising “exclusive behindthe-scenes glimpses from her debut headline shows, candid interviews with Wilson and her loved ones, and much more” (ABC News Studios). Led by producer Robin Roberts (“Good Morning America”) for ABC News Studios, “Lainey Wilson: Bell Bottom Country” comes from executive producer Jonathan Blakely (“60 Minutes+”) and senior producer Katie Conway (“Good Morning America”).
“The Promised Land” (2023)
From director Nikolaj Arcel (“A Royal Affair,” 2012), the 2023 historical drama “The Promised Land” debuts Thursday, May 30, on Hulu. Based on the 2020 novel “The Captain and Ann Barbara” by Ida Jessen, the film follows Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen, “Hannibal”), a retired captain from the German Army. In retirement, Ludwig seeks permission for the Royal Danish Court to build a settlement on the barren Jutland cultivation. However, Ludwig’s aspirations are in conflict with Frederich Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg, “The Pact,” 2021), a merciless landowner that seeks complete ownership of the moorland. So, Frederich schemes of ways to sabotage Ludwig’s operation, including withholding workers and hiring bandits to attack the budding settlement. With a screenplay by Arcel and Anders Thomas Jensen (“Riders of Justice,” 2020), the film also stars Amanda Collin (“A Horrible Woman,” 2017), Kristine Kujath Thorp (“Ninjababy,” 2021), Gustav Lindh (“The Northman,” 2022), Morten Hee Andersen (“Herrens veje”), Thomas W.
