CITIZEN OF THE YEAR GIVES BACK
Every spring, the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce chooses a Nisswa Citizen of the Year — someone who deserves to be recognized for giving back to the community.
In 2024, that citizen was Bob Reichenbach.
Bob has been with the Nisswa Lions Club for almost 30 years and remains involved with the Ski Patrol at Mount Ski Gull, where he helped with the sixth grade learn-to-ski program.
He also helps provide first aid for youth hockey tournaments in Brainerd.
Like many people, Bob spent idyllic summers in Nisswa while growing up, so he eventually moved here full time in 1971.
"We'd come up the day after we got out of school and we wouldn't go back til the
night before we had to go back to school," Bob said of spending summers at the cabin his grandparents built in 1934 on Middle Cullen Lake.
He now lives on Clark Lake with his wife, Kathy.
He's loved the area his whole life.
"It just always goes back to what an ideal childhood we had up here," he said. "The setting obviously was just marvelous, and the people."
He praises the beauty of the community.
"To be able to jump in the lake, and see the sunsets and the northern lights. And the seasons. And the people. What more can you ask for? People spend money to come here on vacation and we have the joy of being able to live here," he said.

'THE PICKLE'
NISSWA MUNICIPAL LIQUOR OPERATION IS STILL GOING STRONG TURNS 75
Ye Old Pickle Factory – much better known to locals and visitors alike as "The Pickle" — celebrates its 75th year in 2025.
Where did the unique name originate?
A former longtime manager of The Pickle said that on a busy day back in the mid 1970s, the phone kept ringing and a person who answered said, "Pickle Factory," so the caller would hang up, thinking it was a wrong number.
Terry Wallin, Pickle manager for the past 15 years and a full-time employee since 1991, has heard other stories as well regarding the city's municipal liquor operation's name:
A grandpa told his grandkids he was going to The Pickle Factory, and they thought he was going to buy pickles.
The bar was busy and someone said, “We're putting 'em in here like putting pickles in a jar.”
A city-owned operation, The Pickle Factory's profits are used every year to reduce the city’s general fund levy — which helps the city's taxpayers.
Almost every Minnesota town had a municipal liquor establishment in the 1950s to help generate income for cities. That's not so today.
The Pickle's busiest time of year is during the Fall Festival/ Smokin' Hot BBQ Challenge on a Saturday in mid-September each year. Other busy times are during the Nisswa City of Lights event, held the Friday after Thanksgiving; the Winter Jubilee held annually in mid-February; and Freedom Days held each July 3.

Terry Wallin and Lani Thomsen are the faces of Ye Old Pickle Factory in Nisswa, both having worked there for nearly 40 years.
HISTORICAL TIDBITS
From “Centennial History of Nisswa,” by Earl C. Leslie, 1986:
• Nisswa's population in 1950, when Ye Old Pickle Factory was founded, was 578.
• The fr ame municipal liquor store dubbed “The Pickle” was the old Murray chicken coop that was directly west of the new city hall built in 1964.
• In June 197 1, Marvin Zimmerman purchased the old frame municipal liquor store and moved it southwest of town. A new building was erected in its place, this one made of stone, concrete and steel.
From a June 15, 2000, Lake Country Echo story on The Pickle Factory's 50th anniversary:
• The Spotlite was a combination Nisswa city-run liquor store and lounge, and a dance hall. The municipal operation was in the front, and the dance hall in the back was operated separately but cooperatively by Larry Bond.
• Pickle pro fits bought a squad car and land for the city park department. Money was earmarked for city sewer operations and the city’s general fund to provide direct tax relief to property owners.
• “Anything Pickle” was the theme of the June 2000 parade.
ONLY IN NISSWA
YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT YOU SEE!
Kindergartners riding in a Nisswa fire truck
• During Fir e Prevention Week in October, firefighters from the local fire hall arrive at Nisswa Elementary School with sirens blaring to spray the building with fire hoses, give high-fives to students while dressed in full firefighting gear before sharing a fire safety presentation, then boost the young students into fire trucks and take them to the fire hall.
Fourth graders marching down the street behind a Color Guard • Nisswa Elementary School fourth-graders get a firsthand lesson in patriotism during a flag disposal ceremony at the Nisswa American Legion in the fall. Legion members march with students a half-mile from the school to the Legion to then show them the proper way to retire a flag and fold a flag. Students then get a chance to fold a flag on their own.
Turtle races, of course
• Surely you've raced turtles in downtown Nisswa. But did you know locals officially kick off the season when all Nisswa School students hike over to the turtle track in May for a day of racing? The Nisswa A&W donates root beer floats for every student. Halloween parade
• Visit downtown Nisswa on Halloween and you won't believe your eyes. Everyone from merchants to Nisswa School students and staff — including the principal — dresses in costume as students parade through downtown for trick-or-treating at businesses. It's a sight to see!

Nisswa has been our vacation place for over 65yrs…starting with my in-laws who introduced me to the area before my husband and I were married. We have never missed a summer…we helped my BIL build a home on Big Pelican and now we have taken residency at the RV Park enjoying the area…so much to do being surrounded by lakes, golf courses, shopping, special events in Nisswa. We enjoy breakfast or lunch at Ganley’s restaurant…popping in all the shops…it’s a favorite town among tourists! Nisswa is a destination!
JoAnn Zimmel
My husband and I have always vacationed in the Nisswa area. Three years ago we decided to move here and as the saying goes, “When you find the place you belong, you never look back”.

My job led me to the BLA, my realtor led me to the Nisswa area for the school since I had young kids. It has been amazing! We love downtown, we really enjoy the trails, and the nice clean park. The warming house that lends free skates to use in the winter is great! Nisswa elementary is hands down one of the best schools!
Bonnie White Johnson
Our family has had a cabin on North Long Lake for over 50 years. When we retired, we just knew this was the place to spend our active senior years. We became actively involved with the Legion, Chamber, etc. We have made wonderful friends, have a lovely townhome with outstanding neighbors. Our quality of life from social to doctors and dentists match what we had in the cities. We have not regretted our move one moment.
Racheal Popp
Had a professor at CLC 14 years ago who just had an amazing aura to her. She lived in Nisswa, drove a jeep, and had a golden retriever and just LOVED her life! Ever since having this wonderful teacher I took many countless trips to Nisswa to shop and explore and told myself “this is where I will raise my kids”. Now, 14 years later I have manifested those dreams into real life! Living up in Nisswa, my dream town, on the lake with my family enjoying this beautiful place we get to call home. Couldn’t ask for more! (And awaiting our very own puppy come February)
